Richard asks…

Are shingle contagious to a child whose had the chicken pox vaccine?

Okay today I noticed a very uncomforitable pain on my left hip in one spot sort of, and I noticed what looks like the begging of blisters. So I’m assuming I’m getting shingles again for the third time. Anyway, my question is, is I know it’s contagiouse, but I have a 4 year old daughter who has never had chicken pox before but has had the vaccine. Can she still get chicken pox if I truely am getting shingles again?

admin answers:

Yes, she can. Children who have had the chickenpox vaccine can get chickenpox again. People can get chickenpox if they are exposed to the fluid from shingles blisters. But she can’t get chickenpox from you from you coughing, etc. There needs to be actual contact with the infectious fluid from the blisters.

Betty asks…

Do you take your contagious sick child out in public?

I have been to 2 family oriented functions over the last 2 weeks. One of which was a fundraiser to raise money for a already sick child. At both functions I saw children who had obvious chicken pox. Now, I wasn’t worried about Ethan has he has been vaccinated, but Sophie has not been and I myself have not had chicken pox and have been told I could get shingles if exposed to chicken pox. My mom says once the “pox” have scabbed over they are no longer contagious, but the children were scratching them then touching the playground equipment, doors, etc.

Am I making too big of a deal out of this? I would never take my child out in public, not even if they were sick with a stomach virus or cold. I send my hubs to the store or go by myself.

Is this irresponsible or is this the norm? My sis says I’m making too big a deal out of it and to get over it.

Your thoughts?

admin answers:

Pretty much only to the pedi or ER… I think that it IS very irresponsible & selfish… But people are stupid. That is a fact that we all have to learn, it does not make anything they do right, it just lets you understand WHY they do what they do… Cause they are STUPID.

Speaking of stupid, hubby works at a rehabilitation hospital & one of the nurses up there (She is a sweet person in general, but I am well aware that she is nuts & does stupid S#!T often) Anywho, she was out w/ the chickenpox virus & CAME UP TO THE JOB for whatever reason & was touching stuff at the nurses station & so blah blah blah… Hubby ended up getting the pox (nobody in our house has ever had it) & I hauled azzzz to the dr. To get a booster shot. I was scared to get it. The kids are up to date on their vaccinations so I really was not worried about them picking it up to much. My oldest (8yrs) is a germaphobe so he wore a mask at home & carried around his hand sanitizer. He also insisted daddy wore a face mask LOL Hubby chose to wear gloves as to not touch stuff w/ his pox hands & really stayed away from us as much as he could. He had a really bad case. Ugh!!! It was horrible, I felt so bad for him. He was mad but like I said before we have known the woman for a LONG time & she ain’t got all her marbles. Doesn’t make it right that she came out w/ a communicable virus, but her stupidity helps understand why LOL.

Michael asks…

My in-laws have shingles. How long should I keep them away from my children (who are 5, 3 and 1 year old)?

I think they were diagnosed last week. I’m wondering how much longer they are likely to be contagious.

admin answers:

If your children have been vaccinated against varicella-zoster, there is no reason at all to keep them away from the in-laws.

Children usually get the vaccine at their one year check up. Call the pediatrician and ask if your kids have received this vaccine. You might want to request a copy of their vaccine records just in case…..

John asks…

Shingles: Ex has it….Will my kids get it and is it contagious?

My ex-wife (39yo) just emailed me from out of town to let me know that she has “shingles“. She has my kids with her.

1. She’s a hypochondriac and probably hasn’t had this confirmed by a doctor.
2. Both kids were vaccinated for chicen pox. Neither has had a confirmed case.
3. I had chicken pox as a child.
4. Is there a possibility that if she does have shingles and this isn’t a cry for attention, that my kids will get it?
5. What about the other members of my household? Should they be concerned about contracting shingles if my children have been exposed to the virus?
6. If the ex has a confirmed case, what precautions should be taken to ensure that my children don’t contract the virus?

admin answers:

True shingles is from latent zoster virus hanging out in nerve roots that decided to pop its head out and wreak havoc on a local nerve branch. It is generally not very contagious, but IS contagious through exposure to open blisters. Sometimes, simplex virus and other skin conditions might look like “shingles.” An MD can usually easily distinguish the two with an exam, though, and it is best to discuss concerns with the attending physician.
