Your Questions About Shingles

Steven asks…

is shingles contagious?

can a person who comes in contact with some one who has shingles catch the disease?

admin answers:

Can shingles be spread to others?
Shingles cannot be passed from one person to another. However, the virus that causes shingles, VZV, can be spread from a person with active shingles to a person who has never had chickenpox through direct contact with the rash. The person exposed would develop chickenpox, not shingles. The virus is not spread through sneezing, coughing or casual contact. A person with shingles can spread the disease when the rash is in the blister-phase. Once the rash has developed crusts, the person is no longer contagious. A person is not infectious before blisters appear or with post-herpetic neuralgia (pain after the rash is gone).

What can be done to prevent the spread of shingles?
The risk of spreading shingles is low if the rash is covered. People with shingles should keep the rash covered, not touch or scratch the rash, and wash their hands often to prevent the spread of VZV. Once the rash has developed crusts, the person is no longer contagious.

weird question about shingles?

I ordered something from ebay, and the seller handmakes the items. I received an email from the seller, saying sorry for the delay, but she has shingles. Here’s my question. I read online that shingles is contagious. Can the disease be sent to me with the package? 🙁 (yup, i’m one of those people who worry alot-especially with two kids and the item being a handpainted toilet seat.) Serious answers only, please.

You it can’t my sister has shingles and the only way you can get it is from skin to skin contact… And it most likely wouldn’t be on her hands. My sisters was on her upper shoulder. It’s basically a form of chicken pox that forms undernath the skin.

Sandra asks…

If I’ve never had chicken pox, but have had the vaccination. Can I (as pre-teen) get shingles?

My grandfather has shingles. He’s not sure if it is contagious or not, but he is coming over to exchange Christmas presents. I, being a “germaphob”, and FREAKING OUT because I can’t get sick, especially now. My mom says I won’t get it if I stay in my room while he’s here. But when I come out, he could have touched something and I can get the disease, right? I’ve never had chicken pox, and a HAVE had the vaccination. (10 years ago I had it) Can I get shingles?
I am NOT an adult.

admin answers:

Because you’ve been vaccinated for Chicken pox, you’ve technically already had Chicken Pox. So I’d say you’re in the clear. Your body had the immunity it needs, so don’t worry about it too much (stress can cause shingles).

Shingles is a skin rash caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. The virus responsible for these conditions is called Varicella zoster. After an individual has chickenpox, this virus lives in the nerves and is never fully cleared from the body. Under certain circumstances, such as emotional stress, immune deficiency (from AIDS or chemotherapy) or with cancer, the virus re- activates causing shingles. In most cases, however, a cause for the reactivation of the virus is never found. The herpes virus that causes shingles and chicken pox is not the same as the herpes virus that causes genital herpes (which can be sexually transmitted) and herpes mouth sores. Shingles is medically termed Herpes zoster.

Shingles can be spread from an affected person to children or adults who have not had chickenpox. Instead of developing shingles, these people develop chickenpox. Once they have had chickenpox, people cannot catch shingles (or contract the virus) from someone else. Once infected, however, persons have the potential to develop shingles later in life

Jenny asks…

Can you diagnose this? Please read for more detail.?

I live in SW FL and I work in a office. One of my co-workers has been sick. It started with swelling like an allergic reaction (hands, arms, face, throat) and he was itching everywhere. The doctors had him on special diets to find out what it was. Turns out it was a viral infection not allergies. He also had shingles and some other nasty sore on his arm that was real contagious. He has been prescribed all kinds of medicine, but the swelling continues. Now his brother (who also works here), had a sore on his face. His brother said it was just an in-grown hair, but last night he went to the hospital because of it. Basically, I’m freaked out cause I don’t want to catch this nasty swelling, sore disease. The doctors are sending the 1st brother up to N. FL for special treatment because they don’t know what it is. That scares me. I don’t want to catch this. Do you think it is contagious? What can I do so that I won’t catch this? What if it is airborne??? I’m scared. Please calm my nerves….. tell me what you think. Swelling, sores, itchiness, the doctors don’t know what it is….. What are your thoughts on this?

admin answers:

There is no way to tell from your description. Even the doctors don’t seem to know. Take precautions. Do not use the same telephone without using alcohol. Get some alcohol prep pads from the drug store. Start wiping things that you share. Be careful not to touch your face. Wash your hands frequently and keep some hand sanitizer always available.
