Prodormal is the first stage. This represents the stage of viral infection where common symptoms are present.This includes fever, headache, nausea, chills etc. These are the pre-rash phase which develops before the appearance of the shingles rash. The severity and suffering is low in this stage.At this stage, the virus has not reach to the immune systemSo there are chances that the further progress can be stopped by strengthening the immune system. After the prodormal stage comes the eruptive stage. In this stage the rashes start to appear after 2-3 days of infection. This blisters mainly appear on one side of the body which may also cover the whole body. Face, legs and arms are some of the places where the blisters appear more commonly. The blisters of shingles have clear fluid in them and appear as chicken pox blisters. It causes irritation and pain.Even pain is worsen by the slight touch or touch of cloth. So patient often wants to wear loose clothes. Scabbing starts as the clear fluid in the blisters form pus. This is the least infectious state as the viruses are no longer present. So in this stage, external ointment that contains antiviral properties may help. The blisters in this stage can be cured by using extracts from creosote bush, lemon balm etc.These are natural products with no or very little side effects. They are helpful.

PHN or Post-Herpetic Neuralgia stage is the next and final stage of the infection. Sometimes even after the blisters have healed, patients may suffer from pain. When the pain persists even after the healing of the blisters, it is called the Post-Herpetic Neuralgia stage. The pain seems to occur along the nerve roots and therefore this stage is very painful. This pain can even lasts for months or years. As the virus has already set in so there is no use of taking antivirus drugs. Pain reducing creams and ointments can be used in this treatment.
