Your Questions About Shingles

George asks…

has anyone had shingles without the rash?

my mum has had the pain you get when you get shingles for 4 days but hasn’t got the rash. she has had shingles before. so she wants to know if you can get shingles without the rash??? thank-you.

admin answers:

Yes, you can, but it’s not as common to have them with out a rash. Is the pain in the same place that she had the rash before? The pain can come back on and off for years after you have shingles. She may also have a new case of them, it usually takes about a week for the rash to show up. After she clears up she should ask her doctor about getting the shingles vaccine, it’s called Zostavax.

Donald asks…

Shingles pain, but no rash possible?

My wife suffered from an attack of shingles in July of this year. last week she had intense pain in the area that she had the attack, (under her right breast and around her belly) today she is complaining of the same though more intense, like a sharp stabbing pain, making it difficult to take breath, again no rash is visible, could it be another attack of shingles so quickly and can this occur without the rash?

Thank you.

admin answers:

Yes, either one is possible. She could be having another separate outbreak or it could be related to the last.

The pain can start 1-7 days before a rash appears or (though not as common) some individuals experience the pain and the rash may not appear at all during the outbreak.

However, since her last bout was so recent, read about “post-herpetic neuralgia,” (PHN.) It sounds like this may be the case considering your wife’s current symptoms. Http://www.answers.com/topic/postherpetic-neuralgia

Laura asks…

Has anyone had a shingles out break with rash and no pain?

After a very painful bout of shingles and 3 yrs later, I now am experiencing shingles again, just lower down on the waist and back without the pain. I have mild itching and the red rash. Has this happened to anyone else?
After a bad bout of shingles and 3 years later, the shingles are back! However, this time they are lower on the waist and back, and there is no pain other than mild itching. This has been going on for 3 to 4 mos. Has anyone else experienced this?

Jenny asks…

Shingles without pain?

I just went to my doctor about a rash around my waist area and he diagnosed it as shingles. However, there is no pain involved, just itchiness. I told him that but he seemed to think it was still shingles. I’ve checked everywhere online and it seems that pain usually always comes before the rash, which I got a few days ago. Is it possible that the pain will come later or has my doctor misdiagnosed me?

admin answers:

I had shingles and like you, just noticed an itchy rash. I had no pain that I recalled whatsoever. I just noticed I had a big patch on my waist area and assumed I was allergic to something.

Usually with shingles it begins from the inside before its visible on the outside which is why your doctor asked if there was any pain.

Rest assured, you were most likely not misdiagnosed! Just try to not scratch it, and if possible, soak in a warm bath with some baking soda… It relieves the itch! Or make a baking soda paste and apply it to the rash area.

Mary asks…

Hi,

Itching or rashes are symptoms of maladies that could become much worse if never healed with good choices.

Although I have seen that most root problems for ‘skin’ issues for myself and others has usually been from long and or short term allergic reactions to ‘something’ COMBINED WITH a weakened lymph liver kidney skin and immune systems – IF the following symptoms would ever occur – I think the worst rash one might possibly have rapidly acquired is from deadly bacterial meningitis, but bacterial meningitis would be very rare.

The two quotes below are from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacterial_Meningitis

“IF a rash is present, it may indicate a particular cause of meningitis; for instance, meningitis caused by meningococcal bacteria may be accompanied by a characteristic rash.”

“The MOST common symptoms of meningitis are headache and neck stiffness associated with fever, confusion or altered consciousness, vomiting, and an inability to tolerate light (photophobia) or loud noises (phonophobia). SOMETIMES, especially in small children, only nonspecific symptoms may be present, such as irritability and drowsiness.”

For further details see: http://www.cdc.gov/meningitis/about/faq.html
