Your Questions About Shingles

Nancy asks…

What is this? body cold, skin condition, shingles maybe?

My dad recently had a rash on his neck, and that usually indicates that he has a cold or flu coming on. Apart from the rash, there were never any other symptoms, but recently he started breaking out in pimples all over his face (they don’t itch like shingles would, but they itch a little bit) and he’s feverish, and dizzy.
He was laid off and hasn’t had a job since, and we’re nearly out of money, so we don’t have health insurance or money to go see a doctor.
Any help or suggestions are appreciated!
thanks!
He just told me he also has canker sores in his mouth (which he hasn’t had in at least three years), and he has pain in the right side of his jaw, and it makes it really difficult to chew.

I will say this much…it is NOT shingles.Thank GOD for that,if it were shingles he would have alot of pain in the rash site, alot of itching as well. But other than the rash NOT being shingles I really have no clue to what his rash could be.Does not sound like ‘hives’ either, you stated that they were like ‘pimples’.I suggest that you go to your local drug store and buy some ‘cortizone’ cream, you can simply get the drug store brand(works just as good). It costs alot less that the name brand and is just as effective.Try that and see if they sell the ‘cortizone’ cream that also contains an antibiotic.I’m not sure about that, but it never hurt to simple ask a sales associate.Better ask the pharmacist, but if you can get the ‘cortizone’ cream which includes an antibiotic. If not….purchase them seperate, and do NOT use the 2 creams together.I hope I was of some helpful advice to you,and I hope your dad feels better very soon……happy new year!!! :).

There is no blood test for shingles.
And it doesn’t sound like shingles at all.
It sounds as if you have a very nasty inner ear infection which would give you all of these symptoms.

Shingles presents AFTER you have ALREADY HAD chicken pox.
They present as a very painful looking blisters.
To touch the blisters sends you through the roof.
They ache when not touched.
You may also have a slight fever.

Shingles is contagious.

I had shingles not that long ago.

EDIT: well there you go. You learn something new every day.
That don’t offer a blood test here in Australia. They just go on your symptoms. My appologies.

Laura asks…

What are possible diagnoses for these symptoms?

On Nov 3, 2008, I was fine. Today, Nov 20, 2008 — I have rashes that have progressed around my body, arms, legs, torso face with numerous individual bite-like sores that are painful and itchy, have clear white fluid, and take over two weeks to resolve. I have had pain in the rear upper quadrant of my abdomen, very sharp, on two occasions. My eyes have gotten dry, itchy, and than weepy, red, gray, and uncomfortable. This symptom comes and goes. I have taken high doses of Benadryl, Xyzal (a prescription antihistamine, used round the clock) which sometimes seem to help, but then I have a whole set of new skin eruptions. I am now a Cortel, a series of hydrocortisone tablets a bit milder than Prednisone, since I am diabetic. My only other health issue is high blood pressure controlled by meds. Doctors have ruled out Chicken pox, Shingles, Herpes, Scabies, Bird Mites. Allergy is a possible culprit — I did take a Fiber Supplement called Psyillium on Nov 3, discontinued it on Nov 5. New rashes are still appearing daily in spite of antihistamines. What else could these symptoms add up to? Your help is deeply appreciated!

admin answers:

There is a remote possibility of mogellons disease.
See below for details-if suspicious see an expert doctor who deals with it (many are not) but see what your doctor says first.
I may put other links up too.

William asks…

Could my sister-n-law’s symptoms be caused from my brother’s hospital infection?

This just snapped into my brain, after I posted this in another section. Could my sister-n-law’s symptoms be caused by a hospital infection my brother had over 18 months ago? My brother almost died. My sister-n-law is a dental assistant so she was able to change his IVs at home after he was released from the hospital. Could this have been dormant so long in her system and caused this?:

My sister-n-law has to go to public clinics because they have lost their health insurance after losing their jobs. They don’t seem to be able to help her. What could this be?:

For a time back, the left side under her arm and the lymph under her left breast hurt. She could not stand to have anything touch that area. The first MD asked if she had had a dark rad rash in the area. She told him no not dark red but a patch of small blisters that ran down a narrow area starting at the shoulder and running down her shoulder blade towards her under arm. He passed it off as a pulled mussel. About 6 weeks ago her left eye lid started to swell and become red and bumpy. She saw another MD and he thought it might be an allergy or maybe shingles. So he treated her for an allergy. Her eye went down some but she stills has a lump with a small blister on her eye lid. About 3 weeks ago she went to the ER her left eye was hurting with some swelling but the whole left side of her face from her eye brow to her chin went numb. She told them that her trigeminal nerve on the left is numb. They sent her to the neurologist. She saw her today. She wants an MRI of her brain and brain stem. She has no loss of motor skills or reflexes. The numbness varies from day to day. It always starts just after she gets up and goes across her cheek bone and half her nose. Sometimes to her ear or her eye.

Any ideas? Thanks for any help you can give us
My brother had a serious staph infection on his skin. Under the stitches in his back a ton of puss burst open the stitches on the operation opening. The puss took many weeks to drain out and be stopped. I don’t think he had the same symptoms that my sister-n-law has now. I’m wondering if she somehow got a weaken amune system or something. (He lives in America and I live in Scandinavia so I don’t have all the details.)
Geneveva: I couldn’t get the link to work. Could you copy the symptoms I’ve written down and see what you come up with?

Charles asks…

chicken pox or shingles?

i have like red spots on my arms and feet and want to itch,i cant remember whether ive had had chciken pox in the past or not, what can this be its like red drops on my forearms and bit on my feet, face and back im ok and dont have any fever symptoms yet.
and tricpes area and a little on my abdominal area

admin answers:

Shingles usually starts to show as livid red spots on your chest or back which, if not treated, gradually spread over these areas. If they are shingles they will be very painful, so much so that it can be too painful to wear clothing that touches the spots. You need to see a doctor because, unless they are treated quickly, they will spread and can become unbearable. If they are shingles you will be prescribed Zovirax tablets (Zovirax is used in its cream form to cure cold sores which are caused by the same virus is shingles and chicken pox – Herpes simplex.) I took Zovirax tablets 5 times a day for 5 days and the shingles cleared up. If you suffer from cold sores regularly then shingles is a distinct possibility.
