Chicken pox is normally caused by a virus called varicella zoster which is a member of the herpes virus family. It mostly occurs in children of elementary school age.

How to Treat Shingles on the Face – Medication and Natural Remedies

How to Treat Shingles on the Face – Medication and Natural Remedies

Article by Jared Wright

Shingles is a painful viral infection that develops sore rash and blisters on the skin. These rashes can develop anywhere including on the face which can be a very agonizing experience. One of the worse things about shingles is that the pain can stay with you for a long period of time, including years when all your symptoms have disappeared, widely known as ‘postherpetic neuralgia.’ Having said that, there are adequate medication and remedies to treat shingles effectively if you receive the proper treatment.

Most of the time, shingles are not that serious, and the mild symptoms can be treated without seeking a doctor. However, having shingles on your face is especially dangerous. If sore rashes develop close to the eyes, you must visit the doctor as soon as possible, as it can lead to permanent damage to your eyes. Timely treatment is very important especially for people with immune systems that are weaker. The risk of having other related bacterial skin infections increase when you have shingles. There is also a risk of damage to the eyes and ears, and a facial paralysis. Therefore, you must seek proper consultation from your doctor and follow the treatment closely to avoid any complications. You must not take any chances if shingles develop on the face.

Depending on the seriousness of your infection, your doctor will be able to advise suitable treatment. Anti-virals are a usual choice, alongside anti-inflammatory drugs. More powerful drugs may be necessary if the pain persists. Topical lotions and antibiotic ointments are important to ensure that the blisters stay dry and heal quickly. Injections of vitamin B12 provide pain relief.

Besides these, there are some easy, self-help, natural remedies that can be followed at home in order to relieve pain and itching of rashes on the face. Firstly, you don’t want the infection to spread or make way for any bacterial attacks, so keep your rashes clean and dry. Apply ice packs and cool towels to your face regularly. Apply fresh pulp of aloe vera along with some cayenne pepper in it. Coconut oil, olive oil or eucylyptus oil are other good options. You can gently massage the skin of your face with these natural oils.

If the blisters are very sore and painful, you can apply coconut oil and aloe vera using cotton balls on the affected area. Use peppermint oil or lemon oil as they relieve pain and work against viruses at the same time. This has several advantages?it relieves pain, keeps the skin dry by absorbing moisture, and helps the blisters to heal quickly.

Maintaining a good diet is another important aspect of good shingles treatment. Eat as much fresh fruits and vegetables as you possibly can for 1 to 2 weeks. Include oatmeal in your regular diet. Eliminate sugar, caffeine and meat from your diet. Alkaline water speeds your recovery. Green tea has great anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties and will increase overall health as well.

Thus, you can successfully treat shingles on your face with the help of your doctor and these natural methods. Good medication, along with these effective, organic oils and diet tips is the best treatment method for shingles.

How To Cure Shingles At Different Stages

How To Cure Shingles At Different Stages

Article by JackJ Reynolds

When a child gets chickenpox, the virus remains in the body in inactive stage. When the virus gets some opportunities in the form of fever, infection, stress etc, it gets activated and causes symptoms of shingles. The severity of shingles can be reduced if they are treated properly at their onset.

Prodormal is the first stage. This represents the stage of viral infection where common symptoms are present. This includes fever, headache, nausea, chills etc. These are the pre-rash phase which develops before the appearance of the shingles rash. The severity and suffering is low in this stage. At this stage, the virus has not reach to the immune systemSo there are chances that the further progress can be stopped by strengthening the immune system. Natural steps can prevent the further growth of the virus. Creosote bush is one such herb having medicinal value. These have the antiviral properties which help in boosting the immune system.

After the prodormal stage comes the eruptive stage. In this stage the rashes start to appear after 2-3 days of infection. Along with rash, some symptoms also appears like tingling, numbness, stinging pain, burning sensation etc. In this stage blisters appear as eruptions. This blisters mainly appear on one side of the body which may also cover the whole body. Face, legs and arms are some of the places where the blisters appear more commonly. The blisters of shingles have clear fluid in them and appear as chicken pox blisters. It causes irritation and pain.Even pain is worsen by the slight touch or touch of cloth. So patient often wants to wear loose clothes. Scabbing starts as the clear fluid in the blisters form pus. This is the least infectious state as the viruses are no longer present. So in this stage, external ointment that contains antiviral properties may help. The blisters in this stage can be cured by using extracts from creosote bush, lemon balm etc. These are natural products with no or very little side effects. They are helpful.

PHN or Post-Herpetic Neuralgia stage is the next and final stage of the infection. Sometimes even after the blisters have healed, patients may suffer from pain. When the pain persists even after the healing of the blisters, it is called the Post-Herpetic Neuralgia stage. The pain seems to occur along the nerve roots and therefore this stage is very painful. This pain can even lasts for months or years. As the virus has already set in so there is no use of taking antivirus drugs. The only method which may give some relief is the symptomatic treatment. This is a more comforting treatment. Anti-inflammatory treatment can also help to some extend. Pain reducing creams and ointments can be used in this treatment.

It also important to enhance once immune system. The immunity of the body may get enhanced by a proper diet and nutritional food. The more you remain healthy, the lesser are the chances to get diseased.

Your Questions About Shingles

Ruth asks…

Could I have the onset of shingles without blisters yet.The right side of my haed and face hurt + ear drained?

I don’t have blisters yet but the right side of my face and my ear hurts. My ear has drained three times and I’ve had a headache for a week. Now I have flu like tenderness on the whole right side of my head and face. I have an earache and my eye on that side is starting to hurt too. my throat on the same side I think has a bump on it today and I have been under a great deal of stress. I had chicken pox and scarlett fever at the same time when i was five I am now 40. I cannot see my Dr untill Friday and the ER here is a big joke. without blisters could this be the onset of shingles? signed without a clue till friday
the dr said it was not an ear infection and he saw nothing in my ear. now I got a red spot on my chin

admin answers:

So sorry to hear you have shingles. My daughter had it and the only way to get rid of them isgo to the doctor’s and get medicane, and wait it out; its just like the chicken poxs. And that I know all about.

Donna asks…

Shingles in Children?

I have several questions. – Our 7 year old was just told she has shingles. She has been going to a Chirporactor for the last few weeks and having spinal manipulation, mechanical – low battery powered nerve stimulation, etc which I did not agree with (she is with ex right now temp) I did not know about this. However she came to my home with a rash. I took her to the dr and it looked like dry patches of skin, well she complained about them and the ex took her and said she had shingles. Now I know the virus lays dormant, however could the treatments for her nerves/spine trigger this onset?
Is this possible in addition to the stress she is under – new environmnet additional stresses?
I’m pregnant and was around her but show no signs of shingles and yes i have had chicken pox, is my unborn child at risk?
yes she had chicken pox when she was 3. it looked like dry skin rash – however she started to really complain and they took her to 2 drs and a dermatoligst and said she had shingles. I asked my ex if they are going to run test for her immune issues and he freaked out about my question. Perhaps he is just playing games as he always has.

admin answers:

First of all, why on earth is your child seeing a Chiropractor AND receiving nerve stimulation?! I don’t know of a single child that should be put through this kind of unsupportable and poorly researched intervention. Sure, you need to see them 3 times a week for a month, then twice a week for another, then weekly for another. Then, they’re going to tell you, “better see the doctor.” I see/hear it all the time. Don’t waste your money.

Aside from that…

I’ve NEVER seen a child with shingles at such a young age. I’m not saying it can’t happen, but that child would definitely have some immune deficiency issues if it did. If they were dry patches of skin, then I doubt highly it was shingles to begin with. Typically, shingles erupts with VESICLES (tiny blisters) and on ONLY ONE SIDE OF THE BODY. It does not cross the center line of the body at all. The patient will typically feel a sensation of burning and itching. It is quite painful to say the least.

If it were scattered dry patches of skin, especially in the folds of the arms, knees, etc., then I would suggest this to be more like eczema. Check the child.

Because it is related to the chicken pox (varicalla) virus, Yes, shingles could be a problem for you because your pregnant. Maybe your Ex is telling you this to keep you away from your child. Better verify with the child’s doctor who made the diagnosis first, and then go from there.

Best of luck.

Robert asks…

Can shingles test postive for hsv1 and 2??

About 5 years ago i developed what i initally thought was a bug bite (small rash)on my left butt cheek and doctor diagnosised as shingles. They have given me medication and it has seemed to help during shingles outbreak. Recently, my doctor had hsv1 and hsv2 test on me to verify i have shingles and they both came back positive. I’ve been faithful in my 15 year marriage and am sure my husband has as well. I do not show ANY signs of herpes (hsv2) and all the signs of shingles. Can anyone with a medical background shed light to situation.

admin answers:

Shingles are the same strain as the Chicken Pox virus. It’s herpes but it’s not contagious unless you’re sick at the time (shingles isn’t contagious). You have to get chicken pox first. If you’ve never had it then you wont get shingles. But you shouldn’t have them for 5 years…

Donald asks…

What could this be? Shingles?

My husband has developed a slight tingling and tenderness on both of his hands. Both hands are also very itchy , no other symptoms. Could this be the first sign of shingles? Has anyone else had this?

Thank you for legit answers, please keep other responses to yourself.
The pain and itching is on the palms of his hands, no rash of any sort.

admin answers:

This doesn’t sound like the typical sign’s of Shingles, although people display medical problems in various ways. From what I know ,with people who have been diagnosed with Shingles, it seems to hurt in the warm areas of the body. For example, under the sides of the arms, along the rib cage area, inner thighs, back.It is also quite painful. They may , or may not break out in red spots.Shingles is very much related to the nervous system.I hope this helps. But it would be best to see your Doctor, before it gets worse.Good Luck.

Lisa asks…

I’ve never had Chicken Pox, But I think I may have shingles, is that possible?

Is it possible to get shingles when you never have had chiken pox’s? I have all the signs/symptoms of shingles. Rash, developed into the bumps, pain, one area, on my back. Does anybody know?
So it is possible? Everything I’ve read said it wasn’t, and when I told my Dr. I never had chickenpox he said it was Herpes V2 and who knows how I got it because I’m not sexually active. I am taking Valtrex right now for it, but it can be shingles? I have read that doctors mis-diagnose herpes V2 a lot, and my Herpes test came back negative according to the health clinic, even though there is a chance of error. I’m just freaking out because I’m not sexually active so don’t understand how it can be herpes if it is.

admin answers:

The following are quotations from a National Institute of Health website on shingles. My guess is that you either don’t remember having chicken pox or had a mild case but you had it sometime and the virus stayed in your body to reactivate as shingles also known as Herpes Zoster.
“Anyone who has had chickenpox is at risk for shingles. Scientists think that in the original battle with the varicella-zoster virus, some of the virus particles leave the skin blisters and move into the nervous system. When the varicella-zoster virus reactivates, the virus moves back down the long nerve fibers that extend from the sensory cell bodies to the skin. The viruses multiply, the tell-tale rash erupts, and the person now has shingles.
A person with a shingles rash can pass the virus to someone, usually a child, who has never had chickenpox, but the child will develop chickenpox, not shingles. A person with chickenpox cannot communicate shingles to someone else. Shingles comes from the virus hiding inside the person’s body, not from an outside source.”

Shingles ? Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Shingles ? Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Shingles is distinctive because it affects only one side of the body. Shingles is derived from the Latin and French words for belt or girdle, reflecting distribution of the rash in a broad band. The chickenpox virus (varicella) remains in a dormant state in the body in the root of nerves that control sensation. The majority of people with shingles, however, are healthy. No special tests need to be done to see if your immune system is strong. It occurs only in people who have had chickenpox in the past and represents a reactivation of the dormant varicella virus.

What causes shingles?

Shingles occurs when the virus that causes chickenpox starts up again in your body. After you get better from chickenpox, the virus “sleeps” (is dormant) in your nerve roots. In some people, it stays dormant forever. In others, the virus “wakes up” when disease, stress, or aging weakens the immune system. It is not clear why this happens. But after the virus becomes active again, it can only cause shingles, not chickenpox.

Symptoms

The main symptom of shingles is often extreme sensitivity or pain in a broad band on one side of the body. The pain and general symptoms subside gradually as the eruption disappears. In uncomplicated cases recovery is complete in 2-3 weeks in children and young adults, and 3 to 4 weeks in older patients. The pain may be just in one spot or it may spread out. The patient usually feels quite unwell with fever and headache. The lymph nodes draining the affected area are often enlarged and tender.

Before a rash is visible, the patient may notice several days to a week of burning pain and sensitive skin. Before the rash is visible, it may be difficult to determine the cause of the often severe pain. Shingles start as small blisters on a red base, with new blisters continuing to form for three to five days. The blisters follow the path of individual nerves that comes out of the spinal cord (called a dermatomal pattern). The entire path of the nerve may be involved or there may be areas with blisters and areas without blisters.

Treatment

Antiviral medications are also routinely prescribed in severe cases of shingles or when the eye is affected. Such treatment needs to begin within three days of getting the rash to be effective, so if you suspect you have shingles, see your doctor immediately. For reasons that are not completely understood, some PHN patients get no relief from pain medication, and what works in one case may not be effective in another.

The severity and duration of an attack of shingles can be significantly reduced by immediate treatment with antiviral drugs, which include acyclovir, valacyclovir, or famcyclovir. Antiviral drugs may also help stave off the painful aftereffects of shingles known as postherpetic neuralgia (see section entitled “What are the Complications of Shingles?). Doctors now recommend starting antiviral drugs within 72 hours of the first sign of the shingles rash. Early treatment is believed to reduce the risk of postherpetic neuralgia and may speed up the healing process.

Learn How These Simple Yet Effective Natural Remedies For Shingles Will Help You & Control Them

Learn How These Simple Yet Effective Natural Remedies For Shingles Will Help You & Control Them

Article by Dylan Frame

The following article will describe several natural remedies for shingles that could be used at home & bring you pain relief.

The herpes virus can cause painful blisters around the mouth & genital area.

Although different strains of these viruses cause lesions in these 2 different regions, the infection is mainly identical in both areas. The virus has the annoying habit of hiding out deep in the ganglia nerve where it rests latent for months or even years. Occasionally it can reactivate & pass through the same nerves, initiating what doctors call an outburst.

Conventional medical treatment consists of antiviral drugs such as acyclovir, which reduce the length & intensity of the shingles outbreak, and, when used routinely it can reduce the # of attacks. Nevertheless, these treatments aren’t dramatically effective.

Natural Remedies for Shingles

1 Melissa officinalis (lemon balm)This plant is widely sold in Europe as a topical cream for genital & oral herpes treatment. It’s native to southern Europe, where it’s even grown in home gardens with the sole purpose to attract bees. When rubbed, the plant leaves a pleasant lemon scent, hence the English name.

The cream, based on Melissa, seems to contribute to the natural remedy for shingles, both genital & oral herpes. It can be used at the first sign of blisters or on a regular basis to keep away from major outbreaks. There is no evidence that Melissa will help prevent the spread through personal contacts.

Scientific evidenceNumerous studies have shown a definite reduction in the duration & severity of shingles symptoms (both genital & oral) and, when used regularly, it reduces their frequency of appearance. Case 1 In a particular study, patients who used Melissa recovered in just five days, while patients who received another type of treatment required ten days to recover. Case 2. Researchers also described a “significant reduction” in the reappearance of those shingles symptoms when they used Melissa. Another double-blind study of 116 patients with oral or genital herpes, showed a appreciably better recovery rate for patients treated with Melissa in 2 dermatological centres. Case 3. A recent double-blind placebo-controlled study of sixty-six patients who commenced with an oral herpes virus outbreak showed that treatment based on Melissa cream produced measurable benefits already on the second day, allowing for the intensity of the pain, # of blisters & size of lesions to reduce. Long term monitoring of these patients insinuate that this treatment may delay the interval between outbreaks. Case 4. Nobody knows the therapeutic mechanism of action of this plant. It’s believed that the plant makes it harder for viruses to invade cells.

Dose

Either for natural remedies for shingles or for treatment of an active herpes outburst, the correct dose 4 times per day of continued application of a cream made of Melissa extract 70:1. Later, the application can then be reduced to twice daily for preventive purposes. The plant doesn’t prevent virus transmission to her newborn for a pregnant woman nor it can not stop dissemination of the disease through sexual contact.

Side effectsThe current use of Melissa isn’t associated with significant side effects, but allergic reactions can occur. This plant is on the list of safe products by the FDA (GRAS, generally recognised as safe). There are no known drug interactions, but an animal study suggests that when the plant is taken with sedative drugs, it may increase the sedative effect.

Your Questions About Shingles

Nancy asks…

question about shingles?

does anyone have any at-home remedies for shingles?

admin answers:

I had shingles back in November. I don’t know of any home remedies. I had to get medicine that cost $250 for a ten day supply. Thank the Good Lord it only cost me $75 with my insurance. I thought I had been bitten by a spider. It was so painful it would take my breath away. Take care of yourself and I’ll be praying for you.

Robert asks…

I just went to a doctor and got diagnosed with shingles…?

I already finished taking the tablets but still am using the cream and body wash. I was wondering, because i am only 11yrs old, how did I get it? I mean it supposed to happen after a lot of stress like working day and night in an office which i obviously don’t. AND how do I stop the itching? Any home remedies? I mean the cream doesn’t do anything at all except heal it i guess..I am asking: Why does it happen to 11yr olds? How to stop the itching with home remedies?

admin answers:

I am so sorry about your shingles outbreak!
Yes you are very young however it is a kin to the chicken pox virus and personally I believe that we will begin seeing more and more cases in youth.
The reason I feel is extreme pressure not only at home, but school, socially etc.
You may not feel stressed but deep inside maybe you really are.
I would reccomend going to the health store. My mom had shingles the day she retired, she should have been full of joy but was inside very afraid.
The provided a oatmeal bath product which she said was amazing as well as an herbal remedy to take. By all means check with health experts before doing anything different but it is a great way to stop itch and relieve paid. I wish you the best for your recovery!

Here are a few items I found on the web. Hope they help, poor thing this is miserable. Be sure to give her some pain relievers to help her.

For Shingles, apply tea tree oil several times a day, it drys the shingles and they usually go away in a few days

Crush two aspirin, mix them with 2 tbsp rubbing alcohol, and apply the paste to lesions three times a day. This will provide relief by desensitizing the nerve endings.

Soothing Baths. Frequent baths are particularly helpful in relieving itching, when used with preparations of finely-ground (colloidal) oatmeal. Commercial preparations (Aveeno) are available in drugstores, or one can be made at home by grinding or blending dry oatmeal into a fine power. Use about two cups per bath; the oatmeal will not dissolve, and the water will have a scum. One-half to one cup of baking soda in a bath may also be helpful.

Lotions. Calamine lotion and similar over-the-counter preparations can be applied to the blisters to help dry them out and soothe the skin.

Antihistamines. For severe itching diphenhydramine (Benadryl) is useful and it also helps children sleep.

Preventing Scratching. Small children may have to wear mittens so that they don’t scratch the blisters and cause a secondary infection. All, including adults, should have their nails trimmed short.

Charles asks…

Anyone ever been through “shingles” and thought it was as tramatic as I did?

I had a mild case on my belt line on my back, no bigger than 2 silver dollars, but felt like I was being stabbed over and over again…(I can’t imagine what severe cases must be like). Then along with the rash comes the terrible no energy flu-like feeling. Ever since I had them I try not to worry and be as anxious with life as before because I do not want to go through that again. I’m only 29, so the Dr. said it’s my nerves that did it. Anyone care to talk about their episode with them? By the way…I went on Valtrex to help with mine…along with home remedies such as dabbing with vinegar…green tea…etc.

I BELIEVE (from my own experience):

Shingles if caught in it’s beginning stages can be treated with antibiotics to help minimize your discomfort. There is NO cure but to let time take it’s course.

I’ve been through it and felt the same way you do. It was murder. To this day (2 years later) I still have some scarring.

Stress was the cause for my outbreak.

DON’T WORRY: It’ll get better. Usually 6 weeks to 2 months.

Hang in there… I feel your pain!!

CREAM INFO:

The best treatment for the pain after the rash is gone is a cream called Zostrix. This cream can be bought from your pharmacy without a prescription. To use Zostrix Cream one must apply it five-six times a day. It will take two to three weeks of use before the cream will start to work. This takes tremendous patience. If you persist though, the benefit of reduced pain will pay off.
