Your Questions About Shingles

Daniel asks…

what cause shingles and is it contagious?

The lady my wife takes care f does not get up out of bed EVER even when she can and nly wants to bath once are twice a week could that of cause it?Just tryin to figure it out.

admin answers:

Shingles is caused by the virus that causes chicken pox. If one has ever had chicken pox they can get shingles. Viruses continue to live on your nerves even after you no longer have symptoms from the virus. Shingles can thereby be re-activated from a childhood Chicken Pox infection much later in life. And its typically older folks who get it. Folks w/ compromised immunity can get it as well. It can come on at any time. I don’t think it has anything to do with bathing (or not bathing). From what I understand its not contagious as long as people who come incontact w/ the shingles sufferer have already had chicken pox.

James asks…

Can exposure to chicken pox cause shingles?

I had chicken pox when I was young so I am unable to get them again, but I know the virus stays with you and can later turn into shingles in some people. What I need to know is if exposure to chicken pox can cause an outbreak of shingles. I have a compromised immune system due to a neurological disease so my chances of getting shingles are increased. I have found information saying that exposure to shingles can cause chicken pox, but I can not find anything saying if it works the other way as well. Any serious info is greatly appreciated!
Yes, chicken pox and shingles are related. They are from the same disease!

admin answers:

I had shingles over thanksgiving and I also have a low immune system and chicken pox serverly as a child. The virus hides in your spine until stress and a low immune system cannot fight it off when it inflames. It inflames a nerve, reaches the top of the skin and causes a rash. I suffer from postneualgia or something like that-pain after shingles. I am only 20 also. Shingles is only contagious to people who have not had chicken pox and it is transmitted by air NOT TOUCH…it is only air borne when the blisters have opened. Dont let anyone tell you diffrent. I am a med student and have been to three doctors. Chicken pox cannot give you shingles…just later on if you have low immune system and high stress. I know someone is going to say-what 20 yr old has stress that bad. Me- my father passed away after 3 mth battle of cancer at age 49. I was his caretaker in my fist semester in college…dealing with his death and losing my best friend is hard…so yes, I have stress…good luck with it. There is NO prevention. I do know that potassium and B Complex help with stress and nerves…take those after consulting your doctor.

Sharon asks…

Can a Chicken Pox Vaccination cause Shingles later in life?

When I was nine (I am 16 now), I recieved the Chicken Pox vaccination. First of all, do I need to be re-immunized every so often? Also, if my body stops recognising the Chicken Pox antigen, am I at risk for CP or even Shingles later in life?

admin answers:

No, not at all – the immunization is designed to initiate the antigen-antibody complex (i.e. Make the body react to a controlled exposure to the disease) this is referred to as a primary response. Once it has been recognized by the body it does not get forgotten and there are always antibodies waiting around to encounter it again.

If the antigen triggers the response again then it initiates a
secondary response, so that any effect of the infection is diminished. Put simply – as the body has learned how to go about dealing with this infection, then it does and very successfully as a general rule.

If you’ve never had chicken pox then the immunization should reduce any full-blown effect should you encounter it (as the body has learned how to deal with this).

No need for booster jabs or anything (it’s not like a tetanus shot) once it’s been learned by the body, that’s it.

Cheers and wishing you a CP & shingle free existence,
Gray

Jenny asks…

Can Shingles cause genital herpes or cold sores?

My boyfriend has shingles. As i know that this disease is part of the herpes family… Can the disease lead to or cause genital herpes or cold sores in the person with shingles? Is there any way that i could be infected with herpes by being intimate with a person who has/ has had shingles?

admin answers:

No, you cannot get herpes by being intimate with someone who has shingles. As others have said, the only thing that might happen is that you could get chicken pox if you have never had it, or never been vaccinated for it.

Lizzie asks…

What kind of symptoms other than pain and rash does shingles cause ?

Does it make you sick in the stomach, dizzy, headaches, sleepy etc …

admin answers:

The signs and symptoms of shingles may include:

Pain, burning, tingling, numbness or extreme sensitivity in a certain part of your body
A red rash that begins a few days after the pain
Fluid-filled blisters that break open and crust over
Itching
Fever and chills
Headache
Upset stomach or abdominal pain
Typically, the shingles rash occurs on only one side of your body. This is an important sign to help diagnose shingles. It may appear, for example, as a band of blisters that wraps from the middle of your back around one side of your chest to your breastbone, following the path of the nerve where the virus had been inactive. Sometimes, the shingles rash occurs around one eye or on one side of the neck or face.

Pain is usually the first symptom of shingles. For some, it can be intense, with just the slightest touch causing severe pain. Sometimes the pain can be mistaken for other problems or diseases, such as kidney stones, gallstones or appendicitis, depending on its location. Some people experience the pain without the rash, which makes diagnosing shingles more difficult.

Although the shingles rash may resemble chickenpox, the virus typically causes more pain and less itching the second time around.http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/shingles/DS00098/DSECTION=symptoms

?There is a shingles vaccine, you can take it even if you’ve had shingles before.

Information on Shingles

Information on Shingles

Shingles is a reactivation of the herpes zoster virus (varicella-zoster virus, or VZV). This same virus causes the childhood illness chickenpox. The chickenpox virus (varicella) remains in a dormant state in the body in the root of nerves that control sensation. In about 1 out of 5 people, the virus “wakes up,” often many years after the chickenpox infection. The virus then travels along a sensory nerve into the skin causing a painful rash

known as shingles.

Shingles occurs when the virus that causes chickenpox starts up again in your body. After you get better from chickenpox, the virus “sleeps” (is dormant) in your nerve roots. In some people, it stays dormant forever. In others, the virus “wakes up” when disease, stress, or aging weakens the immune system. It is not clear why this happens. But after the virus becomes active again, it can only cause shingles, not chickenpox.

Before a rash is visible, the patient may notice several days to a week of burning pain and sensitive skin. Before the rash is visible, it may be difficult to determine the cause of the often severe pain. Shingles start as small blisters on a red base, with new blisters continuing to form for three to five days. The blisters follow the path of individual nerves that comes out of the spinal cord (called a dermatomal pattern).

The first symptom of shingles is a burning or tingling pain, or sometimes numbness, in or under the skin. Other symptoms include fever, chills, headache, or upset stomach. After several days, a rash of small fluid-filled blisters, reminiscent of chickenpox, appears on reddened skin. The pain associated with shingles can be intense and is often described as “unrelenting.”

Also at risk for shingles are people with leukemia, lymphoma, or Hodgkin’s disease, and those whose immune systems have been weakened because they are HIV-positive, or have undergone chemotherapy, radiation, transplant surgery with immunosuppression, or treatment with corticosteroids. Moreover, about 5 percent of people with shingles are found to have an underlying cancer, about twice the number of people in the population expected to have undiagnosed cancer.

Antiviral medications are also routinely prescribed in severe cases of shingles or when the eye is affected. Such treatment needs to begin within three days of getting the rash to be effective, so if you suspect you have shingles, see your doctor immediately. For reasons that are not completely understood, some PHN patients get no relief from pain medication, and what works in one case may not be effective in another.

There are several effective treatments for shingles. Drugs that fight viruses (antivirals), such as acyclovir (Zovirax), valacyclovir (Valtrex), or famciclovir (Famvir), can reduce the severity and duration of the rash if started early (within 72 hours of the appearance of the rash). The addition of steroid drugs may have limited benefit in some cases, but studies have not conclusively confirmed the benefit of steroids in combination with all antiviral drugs. In addition to antiviral medication, pain medications may be needed for symptom control.

Dealing with Shingles Symptoms

Dealing with Shingles Symptoms

Article by Dylan Frame

Are you still struggling with shingles symptoms? The idea behind this article is to give you enough insight so that you can get the knowledge to find the right treatment for solving your shingles symptoms.Overall, shingles will normally go away as they came -unadvertisely- and at that time you would only need to treat the pain to achieve a faster relief.

Your doctor may prescribe a medicine that fights viruses, commonly known antivirals, which help to reduce pain & complications & shorten the illness length. You can use either acyclovir, famciclovir & valacyclovir, for that matter.

Anyone who starts experiencing pain or burning sensation, must begin his medication within 24 hours, preferably before the blisters show up.. Generally the drugs are prescribed in pills in doses much higher than those recommended for herpes simple or genital herpes, however, it’s possible that some people need to take the medicine intravenously (IV). Strong anti-inflammatory drugs called corticosteroids such as prednisone can be used to reduce inflammation & the risk of continued pain. Caution: It must be said that these drugs don’t always function in all patients equally.

Other medications may include:• Antihistamines to reduce the itch (either taken orally or applied directly to the affected skin)• Analgesics• Zostrix, a cream containing capsaicin (a pepper extract) to stop post-herpetic neuralgia

It can also be used wet and cold compresses to reduce pain. Soothing baths and lotions such as colloidal oatmeal bath, starch baths, or calamine lotion can help relieve itching and discomfort. In addition to this, we do also suggest bed rest until you stop having fever .It is important to always have a clean skin and to avoid wearing contaminated items, e.g. clothes. Also non-disposable items should be washed in boiling water or otherwise disinfected before reuse. The person may need to be isolated while lesions are oozing to prevent infection of others, especially to pregnant women.

Once you control these shingles symptoms, you will discover how much less you are likely to suffer from them

Forecast:

The virus herpes zoster normally will go away in a period of 2 to 3 weeks and seldom will recur.. In instances where the virus attacks the nerves that control movement (motor nerves), you may suffer weakness, temporary or even, permanent paralysis. There has been documented cases in which people with shingles reported pain in the exact areas where the shingles occurred and this pain took months and even years to heal.

Possible complications:As mentioned, the pain caused by shingles symptoms last only a few months or, at times, a few years. This pain is called postherpetic neuralgia & it shows where the nerves have been injured after a herpes zoster outbreak. The pain varies from mild to very severe & the people with a greater chance to have it are those over sixty years old.

Treatment for Shingles Outbreak on the Face

Treatment for Shingles Outbreak on the Face

Shingles is an infection caused by varicella-zoster virus. This is the same virus that causes chickenpox. Early signs and symptoms of shingles include pain, numbness, burning and tingling on the affected area followed by a rash. Usually, only one side of the body or face is affected. While the infection is not life-threatening, shingles on the face is considered serious because it can affect your vision or hearing. Blisters close to the eye must be given immediate medical attention.

People who have experienced chicken pox may continue to harbor the virus for years as it lies dormant in the spinal cord and brain tissue. If the virus becomes reactivated for any reason, it results in an outbreak of shingles. The most common early signs of shingles on the face include headache, facial drooping, and weakness on one side of the face. The shingles rash that follows may go around one eye or on one side of the neck and face. Shingles on the face can lead to encephalitis or inflammation of the brain, as well as temporary or permanent blindness, hearing problems, or partial paralysis of the face.

Treatment of Shingles on the Face

If you suspect that you have shingles, you must see your doctor immediately. This is critical especially if the pain and rash are near your eyes. The infection can cause permanent eye damage. Your doctor will conduct a physical exam and ask questions about your symptoms. He may also obtain tissue scrapings of the rash for laboratory testing. Getting immediate treatment will lower the risk of developing complications.

For facial shingles, your doctor will prescribe antiviral drugs such as famciclovir, acyclovir or valacyclovir. Antiviral drugs will help reduce the severity and duration of the symptoms. A corticosteroid such as prednisone may be prescribed to reduce inflammation of the rash. You may be given pain relievers such as ibuprofen or naproxen for mild pain. If the pain is more severe, the doctor may prescribe pain relievers such as opioids.

Complications sometimes happen. One out of five shingles sufferers develop postherpetic neuralgia or PHN, wherein damaged nerve fibers send exaggerated pain messages to the brain. The skin in the affected area becomes overly sensitive to the slightest touch. PHN is usually treated with pain medications, anticonvulsant drugs, and antidepressants.

Home Treatment for Facial Shingles

Apply a cold compress to the face and affected areas to relieve the shingles pain. You can also use Burow’s solution, available at pharmacies, to relieve itching and pain of shingles on the face. Chill the Burow’s solution in the refrigerator before using. Antihistamine medications including diphenhydramine (Benadryl) can also relieve itching. Calamine lotion or an oatmeal paste on the facial area will also provide relief from itch.

What Does Shingles Look Like Always

What Does Shingles Look Like Always

Article by Allan Chan

Many people would like to know what does shingles look like. This is because if the fact that this viral infection is seen quite commonly. In spite of the common appearance of the disease, there is a lot of confusion because many other skin diseases also have rashes and skin lesions. So, awareness about shingles is very important.

In spite of suffering from this disease, they delay their treatment mainly because they are not sure of the disease that they are suffering from. Shingles need to be identified by all those who suffer from the disease.

The first thing that one has to know about the disease is the fact that the skin has rashes on it. Since the disease is caused by a virus, the person who is suffering from shingles will have associated pain, fatigue and general body pain. This should be the main criteria for diagnosis of the disease too.

Other than the signs that have been mentioned above, the person who suffers from shingles will have blisters forming on the skin. Blisters seem to be present in the same area. This is a major factor that will help a person to identify if the blister and rashes on the skin are that of shingles. There is one more condition that can have signs and symptoms very similar to that of the ones seen in shingles. It is nothing other than chicken pox, where the affected person will suffer from both blisters and rashes. Blisters in shingles are all together, whereas the blisters seen in a person with chicken pox are spread apart.

Other criteria can also be used to find the presence of shingles. The clusters that form as a result of the viral infection will start crusting over. This occurs when the blisters break. Some liquid will ooze out of the broken blisters. The blisters that are formed because of shingles will stay on for a period of about a month. The blisters that are formed because of the chicken pox will stay for about a week or a little more than that.

The rashes and the blisters that are caused by shingles will cause itching over the affected area. So, any person who has rashes and blisters that are itching and is red in color can identify the presence of shingles. Since these blisters are all seen in clusters, it is easy to differentiate shingles from other diseases that have similar signs and symptoms and are caused by various other kinds of viruses. It is important to know how shingles will present themselves as it will help in identification and disease treatment.

Home Remedies for Shingles, Natural Cures and Treatment

Home Remedies for Shingles, Natural Cures and Treatment

Shingles is a very painful and often debilitating situation caused by the herpes zoster virus, which is too responsible for chickenpox. After an episode of chickenpox the virus lies dormant, sometimes for years, and then reactivates itself causing first sensitivity and then ache in the area served by the nerve. A rash appears within about five days, first as small red spots then blisters. Within about two days the blisters become yellow and crusted, dropping off within about two weeks but infrequently leaving scarring. The pain may persevere for months or even years.

Causes

Shingles are a reappearance of the varicella-zoster virus, better known as chickenpox. When you had chickenpox the virus never left your body but took up residence in your nerves. It can reappear years later because of a weakening of the immune system due to stress, drugs, surgery, old age or deprived health. About 50% of shingles cases happen in people over 60 years old. Also, the older you get the longer the shingles may last.

What are the signs and Symptoms of Shingles?

You may get headaches, fever or malaise, or even exhibit no symptoms. The symptoms may be followed by feelings of burning ache, itching, oversensitivity, a sensation of pins and needles, or numbness in certain areas of your skin. The ache can become extreme and rashes can spread out over the face, torso, eyes, or other parts. The rashes may look like hives in the beginning but soon turn out to be small blisters filled with blood. Once these blisters dry they form scab like crusts. The pain still lingers even after the rash disappears and is called post-herpetic pain.

Shingles can affect many parts of the body depending upon the involvement of the nerves.

1.    Extreme sensitivity or ache is one of the major symptoms of shingles. Different types of sensation can be experienced by a person like burning, shooting, headache, fever, chills, itching etc. One should get immediate medical help if these symptoms appear on the face especially near the eyes.

2.    After one or two days the rashes with red bumps and blisters erupts on the skin with full ache. First they are filled with pus and after they form scabs by 10-12 days.

3.    After two –three weeks as the scabs fall off, the rash disappears but result into the scarring.

4.    In several patients postherpetic neuralgia is developed in which still after the rash disappears the pain remains for a long time.

Some of the natural cures of shingles are also available –

1.    Apple cider vinegar is extremely effective for shingles. Make use of apple cider vinegar, it will reduce the pain caused by shingles. Even apple cider vinegar can be applied directly on the affected area by dabbing it with a soft cloth and let it dry. Repeat this process as often as needed by you. It will assist the blisters to heal more rapidly.

2.    As vitamin C assist to boost our immune system. So make a habit to intake vitamin C in large quantity that is in between 2000 to 4000 mg.

3.    You can also get relief from ache by the intake of MSM. So take 1000 mg at least two times a day.

4.    Make a paste by addition a small quantity of cayenne pepper and aloe vera gel. Relate it to the affected area. You will get immediate relief from the ache of shingles.

Your Questions About Shingles

Donald asks…

What are some home remedies for shingles pain?

I came down with shingles and the meds are helping with the pain but not a whole lot. Is there any home remedies I should try?

admin answers:

Axsain cream (made from chilli peppers or ‘capsaicin’) has been proven to be effective at stopping the pain. You rub it on, or near, the place where the nerves are itching/painful, that is, in the same dermatome region. If the pain is near your eye or under your hair, you can rub the cream on your cheek well away from your eyelid, or on your forehead. Use a small (pea sized) amount 3 or 4 times a day for about 3 weeks. It stops the pain for seven out of ten people. Since Axsain cream can ‘burn,’ some people rub in an anaesthetic, or numbing, cream about 15 minutes before applying Axsain. This is ‘lignocaine BP’ which can be bought, without prescription, as a 2% gel or a 5% ointment. If your chemist doesn’t have it in stock, s/he should be able to get it in for you and it is cheap, probably less that £1.50. Lignocaine 10% spray can be bought under the brand names Xylocaine or Stud for around £5.50.

Robert asks…

shingles pain?

what causes shinles pain?

admin answers:

Shingles is a viral eruption from within nerve fibers. The chickenpox virus, once it’s been subdued by the body’s defenses, can persist within the nerves of the body (where it’s protected from the body’s defenses), and can erupt causing small water or pus-filled blisters similar to the chickenpox blisters. This re-eruption is often caused by stress (just like cold sores).

Because it is within a nerve it erupts in a pattern only on one side of the body at a time and follows the course of cutaneous nerves (often following the ribs).

Anything that aggravates a nerve will cause pain.

Sandy asks…

shingles pain, i have just been diagnoised with shingles and it is agony?

i would describe the pain as being stabbed over and over or being stung by a million wasps at the same time. any one else out there had shingles and what do they think of the pain? im i just being a wimp? lol
it is around my waist. i am on antibiotics- 5 a day for 7 days and taking ibruprofen for the pain but still keep wincing and twitching every time. feels like im getting electric shocks. hope it clears up soon!

admin answers:

I just answered this for another person that was asking about home remedies (see below). Some of the home remedies might help but I also utilized narcotic pain meds for about 4 days when I had shingles. Talk to your doctor about that. The pain is pretty indescribable to those that haven’t had it. It felt like it was deep inside my body and no matter what I did to scratch at it or poke INTO it I could not get any relief. The good news is that it WILL go away. Maybe adding some of the home remedies will help. Try the cold compresses.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’ve had shingles and they are extremely painful. You should go to the doctor and he/she will probably give you antiviral medicines (possibly Valtrex or Famvir), sometimes in combination with corticosteroids, to reduce the pain and duration of shingles. There is not a cure.
Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. After you’ve had chickenpox, the virus lies inactive (dormant) in your nerves. Years later, the virus may reactivate as shingles. Shingles can have long term effect (PHN) so please go to a doctor.
A few herbs have been known to *help* with the symptoms. Cayenne or red pepper, wormwood, St. Johns Wort, Lysine.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Arginine-rich foods such as chocolate, peanuts and nuts, seeds, cereal grains,
IN ADDITION TO YOUR DALLY SUPPLEMENTS, TAKE:
lysine supplements: 500 to 1,000 mg. Three times daily during an outbreak.
Vitamin C: 2 to 3 g. Daily taken 1 g. (1,000 mg.) every six hours at first sign of pain and continued until the lesions clear.
Vitamin E: 600 I.U. Daily.

John asks…

How did I get shingles and how long will the blisters pain last?

I recently, last Saturday, was diagnosed with shingles. The pain is unbearable even with painkillers and that nerve dulling medicine. The blisters are killer and I can not take it anymore. How long does this pain last for? Also, I am the happiest kid in the world and I played tennis for like literally 24 hours the weekend prior to the diagnosis, however, I have done that plenty of times.

admin answers:

The pain can last quite a while – at least until the sores are well into the drying-up stage. Continue taking your medication as directed. Hopefully in about a week, it will be much better. Also, go to WebMd.com and type in shingles and read up on this condition and see if there are additional suggestions that you might do to make yourself more comfortable.

Charles asks…

My shingles pain came back and i had it 2 1/2 years ago. What should i do?

The areas that were once shingles now hurts again. It went away and sometimes comes back. Now i have that same sharp pain on parts of my upper body. I never had them there. What the hell does this mean? I really need help.
Will it ever go away for good?

admin answers:

Unfortunately yes, they can return again and again. The secret is to keep your immune system as healthy/strong as possible. Good diet, good vitamin regime, etc.

The Varicella virus lies dormant in the nervous system. When your immune system weakens for some reason, another illness, colds/flu, stress, etc. You are vulnerable to another outbreak as this is when the virus can reactivate. Talk to your doctor, a prescribed anti-viral medication can help shorten the length of infection.

The vaccine was above 60 % useful in preventing postherpetic neuralgia a very agonizing ailment that comes from herpes zoster blister. This postherpetic is very dangerous on the human body and it remain in the body system for quite some time. During this time it goes in to an inactive condition, on the other hand, it could still be transported.
