Shingles Natural Treatment

Shingles Natural Treatment

In the past ten years recent studies and research with alternative treatments for shingles has shown it is possible to recover in less than one week and to reduce outbreaks of lesions and pain in three days.

Shingles is a serious health condition and it is important to follow your doctor’s recommendations. Traditionally, most doctors prescribe painkillers for the temporary symptomatic relief of the pain and an antiviral drug to suppress the virus. This form of treatment with drugs reduces the severity and frequency of outbreaks but does not eliminate it from the body. This course of treatment can take six weeks or more and does very little for the patient. The pain associated with shingles can continue long after the initial outbreak.

Some doctors prescribe steroids or itch-relieving creams that contain steroids. Recent studies question the effectiveness of steroids in relieving shingles and suggest avoiding any treatment with steroids. Monitoring by your doctor is recommended, if steroids have been prescribed. It is best to find alternative treatments with your doctor and to seek out natural remedies.

The virus herpes zoster causes shingles and is the same virus that causes chicken pox. Shingles is an infection of the central nervous system and may affect the elderly, those with a compromised immune system, anyone under severe stress or those who have been exposed to the chickenpox virus again. Symptoms may include burning, itching, or pain in one part of the body. A few days later, blisters and a rash appear. The infection may run along a nerve path and look like a branch of a tree. Shingles usually appear on the trunk area and the chest but can also be found on the face. Shingles can cause blindness if it affects the eyes.
If an outbreak occurs on the face the patient should get immediate medical care.

Natural Remedies For Shingles

A good starting point for treating shingles is a diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables. A good diet and reducing daily stress will help boost your immune system

A simple remedy for lesions is to apply a cool or cold wet washcloth or towel to the affected area. A wet towel can be put into the freezer for a while after wetting it to make it colder.

Eliminate sugar from your diet and add these important nutrients to your daily diet – vitamin E, vitamin B12 and vitamin C.

* Vitamin C is suggested with an initial diagnosis of shingles. You may start with 1,000 mg. (+)

* Vitamin E taken daily before meals may reduce the pain of shingles (Study published in the Archives of Dermatology)
(+)

* Vitamin B12 injections may reduce the pain of shingles (Study published in the Journal Geriatrics) (+)

(+) It is recommended that you consult with your doctor before starting any vitamin program.

* E capsules can be squeezed directly onto lesions.

* Avoid heat as well as tight clothes and itchy fabrics like wool.

* Calamine lotion may relieve the pain and help dry the lesions.

Shingles is a serious illness and before starting any treatment program you should consult with your doctor.
Shingles is the same virus as chicken pox. You cannot catch shingles from someone else unless you’ve never had chicken pox. If you have shingles you should use caution being around pregnant women who have not had chicken pox – you could infect both the woman and her unborn baby.

Symptoms And Treatment Of Shingles Recurrence

Symptoms And Treatment Of Shingles Recurrence

Article by Joseph L. Taylor

Shingles are a terrible ailment to get, but shingles recurrence is even worse. There are a number of painful symptoms associated with this ailment. Itching is a common side effect. There can be a burning sensation that feels even more intense than the itching. At the beginning stages of shingles a person may simply develop a small headache or become sensitive to light. But as it progresses there can be flu-like symptoms without the fever that usually accompanies the flu. There can also be a rash that will eventually turn into blisters. Postherpetic neuralgia can be developed; it can cause chronic pain over extended periods of time.

People who have had chickenpox are more likely to develop shingles than someone who has never had it. A problem occurs when this chickenpox virus become reactivated. This is just another great reason to get your child vaccinated for this illness. Shingles are more common in people ages fifty and over, but there are cases of it happening to younger people as well. There are several things that can reactivate the virus: high stress, changes in the body due to aging, and drugs and illnessess that suppress the immune system.

Unfortunately shingles and shingles recurrence do not have a cure, but there are several treatments that can reduce suffering and complications. Antiviral medications can be used to reduce the pain. Creams, and antidepressant can also be used to ease the pain. It is very important to receive treatment as soon as possible. The longer a person waits the more resistant they will become to the treatment. Those people who contract postherpetic neuralgia will likely respond poorly to treatment. Luckily a vaccine called Zostavax has been released and this helps reduce the likelihood of contracting postherpetic neuralgia.

At the very first signs of Shingles make sure to contact your doctor. Getting treatment as soon as you can will help the with your recovery from the virus.

Your Questions About Shingles

Ken asks…

can shingles be contagious for new born babies?

admin answers:

You cannot catch shingles, it only occurs in people who have had chicken pox and is caused by the virus reactivating along a nerve path. Theoretically a new born could catch chickenpox from a shingles sufferer but it is unlikely as there would have to be close contact, i.e. Baby being touched by one of the spots. It is not airborne, unlike chickenpox.
The risk to a newborn (2 wks old or less) is that they can contract a severe form of the illness. If you are concerned speak to your GP or health visitor for reassurance.

Steven asks…

is shingles contagious?

i have shingles on my nose.. dont say gross.. i no already its disgusting.. but my doctor said its not contagious and my dad said that i have two babies in my house and she was sure its not contagious.. but when i got home my sister said that it is and she looked online and it said it was but my dad looked online and it said it wasnt… can anyone help??

admin answers:

Shingles (Herpes Zoster) and Chicken pox are caused by the same virus. If you have shingles, those in contact with you can get chicken pox from you. But no body is going to get shingles from you. Shingles are caused by dormant virus present in the body after an attack of chicken pox. So though shingles won’t be spread to others, anybody in contact with you can get chicken pox if they haven’t got it before.

Carol asks…

Is Shingles Contagious?

I’m going on vacation June 18th, I already have a baby sitter lined up for my 4 year old daughter, The baby sitter called me today and informed me that she has Shingles! Ok…. My 4 year old is up to date on all her shots and has never had chicken poxs… So Can my daughter catch Shingles from the baby sitter? Should I be looking for a new baby sitter? I know nothing about Shingles! Please help!!!!

admin answers:

No. Shingles is not a transmittable disease, it develops from stress, because they virus responsible is an agent from the chicken pox, and never leaves the body. It only remains dormant within the neurons, and becomes active through age, and/or stress. It cannot be received from another person.

Lizzie asks…

how contagious is SHINGLES? (CHICKEN POX VIRUS)?

Can we have our 10 month old baby around my grandmother who is getting over shingles? She still is in a lot of pain, but I think they are pretty much cleared up. any suggestions?

admin answers:

Are shingles catching?

Yes. Shingles can be spread from an affected person to children or adults who have not had chickenpox. Instead of developing shingles, these people develop chickenpox. Once they have had chickenpox, people cannot catch shingles (or contract the virus) from someone else. Once infected, however, persons have the potential to develop shingles later in life.

Shingles are contagious, to persons that have not previously had chicken pox, as long as there are new blisters forming and old blisters healing. Once all of the blisters are crusted over, the virus can no longer be spread.

Helen asks…

When under the age of 30, is it possible to get shingles?

My mom just got shingles, she is in her fifties. I heard it is contagious. I am 24 years old. I had chicken pox when I was a baby.

admin answers:

Shingles isn’t a new infection, it’s the reactivation of the viral infection that causes chickenpox. So you can’t catch shingles from your mother.

If it does reactivate, it’s usually a number of years later, but technically at anytime.

It’s less than clear why this happens, it could be due to changes in the immune system or a physical or emotional shock. It’s more likely to happen if your immune system is weakened through drugs or certain illnesses or in the elderly.
=============================================
Edit @ Lisa: Here you are again with the half truths. Actually that’s not the main reason the varicella vaccine is not included as part of the routine childhood vaccination schedule here in the UK. The main reasons are cost and also, there is a concern that adding another vaccine to routine childhood immunization schedule may cause another drop in immunization rates, which although are rising again, are still below what is required to confer immunity on the community (thanks to, well to be blunt, people like you and that damn fool Wakefield).

The other reason is as you say, there is some concern that if the vaccine was added to the immunization schedule it might result in a rise in the cases of shingles in adults. But this is a theoretical risk, Lisa. The jury is still out as to whether or not the chickenpox vaccine would increase the incidence of shingles. Data from countries where the chickenpox vaccine has been established for about at least a decade, produce no compelling evidence to support your claim.

Anyway, the theoretical risk could possibly be satisfied by vaccinating the over 70s against shingles.

Herpes Zoster – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Herpes Zoster – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Article by Scott Gillespie

Herpes Zoster is a painful rash caused by the Varicella zoster virus (Herpes varicellae), which is the virus that causes chickenpox. Herpes Zoster occurs in people who have had chickenpox and is a reactivation of the dormant virus. Herpes Zoster often occurs many years after the initial chickenpox infection. Herpes Zoster is contagious and may itself cause chickenpox. However, contact with a person with shingles or chickenpox cannot cause shingles.

Symptoms Of Herpes Zoster

Just because you have no symptoms, it does not mean you do not have Herpes Zoster. However, a person infected with Herpes Zoster will experience burning and throbbing sensation where the herpes outbreak is about to happen. Once the outbreak happens, he or she will develop fluid filled blisters which break and scab over. If you are suffering from fever and chills along with blisters, there is all possibility that you might be suffering from shingles.

Signs and symptoms of herpes zoster infection include fever, headache, fatigue, rash, erythematous and sensitive skin, blisters and sores, itching, tingling, burning and pain sensations. Shingles is painful as the virus travels along the nerves to get to the skin, causing damage and inflammation along the way. When the eye is affected, symptoms include redness, dryness and sensitivity to light. Other eye problems may include inflamed eyelids, blurring of vision, corneal inflammation and scarring, glaucoma, cataract, diplopia or double vision and loss of sensation.

Symptoms on women include sores on the cervix, anus, buttocks, and external genitals; some women also have groin lumps or lymphadenopathy. In men, the sores develop on the buttocks, anus, and thighs.

The next symptom to occur is a rash consisting of miniature red blisters. The skin around the rash also becomes swollen. The sufferer will develop a fever and will find that his lymph nodes become swollen.

Causes of Herpes Zoster

Causes of herpes zoster vary. Eating spicy food or even a gentle wind can lead to herpes outbreaks. Aside from that, people who are constantly exposed to stress and weak immune systems are also more prone.

Treatment of Herpes Zoster

The main active principle found in bee venom is melittin, a substance with high anti-inflammatory effects. Furthermore, bee venom contains a complex mixture of proteins and peptides with neurotoxic and immunogenic properties. Thus, shots taken in specific places close to the body area affected by Herpes Zoster will trigger a positive response at the level of the local defenses by means of acupuncture too.

Genital warts there embarrassing and they continually itch. If left untreated they get worse and worse. Imagine what people will say if they find out that you have genital warts. So act now by using the best natural genital warts treatment available, before the problem get out of hand.

Cayenne (capsicum) contains a substance called capsaicin, which relieves pain and aids in healing. It also acts as a detoxifier. Cayenne is available in tablet and capsule form. Capsaicin is also the active ingredient in Zostrix, a topical cream, which is helpful for postherpetic neuralgia. Capsaicin should never be applied topically until the lesions caused by shingles have completely healed, however, or extreme burning pain can result.

Take vitamin A twice daily for 2 weeks, reducing it to once daily for another couple of weeks. This will promote healing and boost up the immune system. Take 1 B-complex tablets provide relief from pain in about a couple of hours. Vitamin C supports the immune system, acting as antiviral agent. Calcium and Magnesium in appropriate daily doses along with vitamin D assist healing and protect sensitive nerve endings.

Natual Treatment and Remedy to Reduce Shingles Pain and Itch

Natual Treatment and Remedy to Reduce Shingles Pain and Itch

Shingles is a viral infection that forms rashes and blisters on your skin. Caused by the Varicella zoster virus, also known as VZV, it is a very contagious infection. Shingles can be a terrible infection if it is not timely treated, leading to unattractive scars and blemishes on your face. The most annoying thing about this infection is that the pain symptoms might not go away immediately even when the rashes and blisters are fully treated and can stay with you for years.

There are various treatment options available for shingles. However, a natural treatment for shingles is the best. This skin disease is best cured with natural remedies, which pose no threat of side-effects and provide efficient cure. There is an array of herbal treatments on hand for shingles. Propolis, golden seal, Echinacea and elderberry are some of the commonly used herbs for natural treatment of shingles. These can be taken in fluid form, for example, as tea. They can also be consumed in the form of syrups, tablets or powders. These herbs are a natural remedy to provide relief from pain and itching.

For a good topical solution, moist clay or cooked oatmeal can be used in place of calamine lotion. It not only provides good relief from itching, but also acts as a great drying agent. Bathing with oatmeal is also recommended to help ease pain and inflammation. For after-bath application, coconut oil or aloe vera is highly recommended. Fresh aloe vera has anti-infection properties that helps to dry the rashes and gives the skin a soothing effect. You can use natural aloe vera gels off the shelves if fresh pulp of aloe vera is not available in your area.

Mix cayenne pepper and aloe vera together will get you the perfect shingles natural remedy to ease pain and itchiness. For every full tablespoon of aloe vera, add about 1/4th teaspoon of cayenne pepper. You can also add one tablespoon of coconut oil to this mixture and mix it well. Dab a soft cotton ball into the mixture and apply it to the affected area for instant relief. It will slowly heal the rashes. Also, another remedy for pain, which works wonders, is eucalyptus oil, which can be gently rubbed and massaged to the skin. Lemon oil also relieves pain. Applying wet, cool towels or ice packs on the affected skin also relieves pain and itching, and this can be repeated frequently. It is really important to keep the rashes cool in order to provide relief from itching and pain from shingles.

Intake of healthy, vitamin-rich food is also very important for the treatment of shingles. Your diet should include good amount of fresh peaches, berries, melons, lemons, avocado, mangoes and tomatoes. Garlic has special antiseptic qualities, and therefore, is recommended for the natural treatment of shingles. You will not go wrong with green, leafy vegetables and brown rice. Sugar must be eliminated from the daily diet. Also avoid caffeine, carbonated drinks and any form of meat. You can improve your body immune system by taking more fruits with high vitamin C. Following a healthy diet and building your immune system will keep the infection from worsening, thus saving you from any more pain.

You must be wondering if following a healthy regime and taking the route of natural shingles treatment is going to be effective for you. Well, it’s obvious to think whether these self-help natural remedies will yield good results, give you clear skin and cure shingles. So it’s normal for you to have some doubts in your head, but you must pick up a good natural treatment from the aforementioned methods—or a combination of them—and follow it religiously, and with full confidence. These natural treatments are tried-and-tested and are the safest way to get rid of shingles.

All these remedies are purely natural, and free of harmful side-effects, but you should always consult your doctor to decide the best options that will suit your condition and successfully treat shingles.

Natural Remedies for Shingles: Using Aloe Vera and Zinc

Natural Remedies for Shingles: Using Aloe Vera and Zinc

Article by Dylan Frame

Further to our previous article, we outlined various natural remedies for shingles, therefore we carry on with our research to bring you the best information so you can make the best decisions.

2. Aloe Vera

This plant is world renowned for its ready for use in the healing of burns & minor injuries; but now, 2 recent studies suggest that it has potential value in dealing with herpes virus infections, & thus to be a good example for the natural remedies for shingles.

Aloe vera cream contains 0.5% aloe & can be used 3 times every day.In a double-blind placebo-controlled trial of sixty men with active genital herpes, it was demonstrated that the use of aloe cream (0.5 % aloe) three times a day for five days, reduced the time required for the healing of the lesions (4.9 days vs 12 days in the placebo group) & increased the percentage of patients considered cured at the end of the second week of treatment (66.7 % vs. 6.7 % in the placebo group). Case 7. A double-blind placebo controlled study of 120 men who suffered from genital herpes found that aloe-based cream was more punchy than pure aloe gel or placebo, possibly because of the fact that fatty ingredients enhance aloe absorption.

Side Effects

Another favorable source of natural remedies for shingles can be found in the zinc & lysine. This is what I like most about natural remedies for shingles. Before you learn that there are many opportunities that can help you treating your shingles symptoms, it appears that you’re meant to bear all the agony of this common disease, but once you get to know all untapped resources ( natural remedies), you don’t feel abandoned any longer. Let’s dig in a couple more of your new best natural remedies for shingles.

3. ZincA recent study has recommended that topical application of zinc may help treating herpes zoster (shingles} infections in the mouth & face. In this study, forty-six people with lip injuries were treated with a zinc oxide based cream or a placebo cream every two hours until resolution of the lesions. The results showed that the cream diminished the severity of the shingles symptoms & shortened convalescent time.

It is thought that zinc interferes with the ability of herpes virus to reproduce itself, however, zinc formulation must be safely designed to release just active zinc ions. Some participants in this study struggled with burns & inflammation caused by zinc, but these side effects aren’t considered a dangerous hurdle in general.

4 L-LysineWhen enough doses of L-Lysine amino acid are taken regularly, it appears that it’s able to reduce the number & severity of shingles outbreaks. But a study that has assessed its impact in the early stages of a shingles attack showed no benefit whatsoever to the patient. In these cases it’s recommended the use of Melissa.Case 9. In a new double-blind placebo-controlled study of fifty-two participants with a history of herpes outbreaks showed that treatment with three g of L-lysine daily for six months produced an average of 2.4 fewer outbreaks than in the placebo group, a significant difference. Outbreaks in the group receiving L-lysine were significantly less severe & healed quicker.Case 11. Another double-blind placebo-controlled study of forty-one persons also showed improvement in seizure frequency. In addition, the study found that 1,250 mg of Lysine per day acted very well, but 624 mg per day didn’t accomplish the desirable effect.Case 12. Further studies with lower doses showed no beneficial effects.Case 13 and 14. When taken as a supplement, a typical dose for adults 1,000 mg per day.

Concerning the safety of this treatment in animal studies, high doses have caused gallstones & elevated cholesterol. Consequently, this medication should be used prudently in people with these conditions. Case 15 and 16

Your Questions About Shingles

Carol asks…

does Acyclovir ( a medicine that is used to decrease pain) kick your off birth control like Antibiotics?

i had shingles and they put me on acycolvir, they did not mention it decreases my birth control, i was just wondering if it had the same affect as Antibiotics while being on birth control?

admin answers:

No and acyclovir is an anti-viral medication, not a pain medication. When someone has shingles, they are often given an anti-viral which will shorten the length of time you have the shingles plus a pain medication such as Vicodin, Percocet or Tylenol #3 for the pain.

Nancy asks…

Do I have and autoImmune problem? I have increasing fatigue and joint pain. but neg lupus and rheumatoid tests?

I am 40 yrs old and over the past year or so have increasing severe fatigue, pain and aching in my back, neck, hips and shoulders. I now have about 10 “good” days out of each month. I also have been sick a lot, have had reoccurring shingles. I get hives out in the sun and burn in only a few minutes. And I get weird rashes on my body -usually down my back or my upper neck and chest area. I have low thyroid (but levels are in control with low dose of med) and occasional anemia. I am a healthy weight, healthy diet, and very active but now if I push myself too much with activity I get extremely nauseated. Rheumatoid and Lupus tests came back negative but my Igg (?) was low. Also a few weak positives. My doctor is trying to get me referred to a rheumatologist or immunologist but it has been months going through the hoops with poor medical insurance provider and still trying. Maybe a change in my diet could help if I knew what was wrong? I’m becoming more frustrated by the day.I have 4 months of nursing school left and have got to get better to make it through and finish! Any ideas whats wrong with me? Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

admin answers:

I am going to suggest two types of things that you may be eating that may be causing you problems.

The first is gluten containing foods if you have developed celiac disease or a gluten intolerance. You can get tested for celiac disease by continuing to eat gluten found in wheat, rye and barley until you get tested with blood work and an endoscopy. Even if the tests are negative, go gluten free for 3 months to see if you have nonceliac gluten intolerance.

The second type of foods are called nightshades which are tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, eggplant and a few others. They can cause joint pain and in some people, cause rashes, hives and other problems. You would have to quit eating them and see what happens.

I see what you said about insurance providers so if you want an answer without testing, then you just go on a gluten free diet and see if you get better. After that go nightshade free if the problems persist.

If the problems persist after the diet attempts, then you may need to see a team at a research hospital about the possibility of vasculitits or another autoimmune disease.

Lisa asks…

preg symptoms or birth control pills please help?

i missed my period for 2 months and i’m on lo-estrogen b/c pill and i have been haven pains in my right lower side it hurt worse then pd cramps and my boobs are itching ive also just found out i have shingles and i’ve read during preg your immune system goes down i just wonder is it preg symptoms or b/c

admin answers:

It could be either. Gooo to your doctor, it’s your best bet!

Guess you have a lot going on. Shingles Home Remedies For Those Who Have Contracted Shingles

Shingles Home Remedies For Those Who Have Contracted Shingles

Shingles usually show up on people that are over 50 years of age. However, there are rare cases of shingles seen among children. It is caused by the virus varicella zoster, the virus that causes chickenpox. After staying dormant inside the nerves in the body, the virus transforms into herpes zoster, causing shingles.

Symptoms for shingles include tenderness and a painful sensation in one area of the body. A few days later, the spot develops a rash. The rash then turns to a cluster of blisters. After the blisters burst open, they will turn dry and crusty until they completely disappear, usually within a week or two. The painful sensation is present the entire time, and can even last long after the rash has disappeared.

Shingles is not really a deadly disease, except for people that have very weak immune systems. However, the rash could lead to infection if neglected, and the burning sensation is very hard to deal with. Here are some home remedies that you can try to help you deal with the symptoms until the shingles disappear.

Take a couple of aspirin tablets and grind it into a fine powder. After that, take two tablespoons of either chloroform or alcohol. This will form a paste that you can put on the infected area. The aspirin in the paste effectively reduces the burning sensation and the alcohol will reduce chances of bacterial infections, as well as help the rash heal faster.

Cool wet dressings also relieve the pain. You can use gauze dabbed in cool water to cover the blisters, but constant changing is recommended to avoid infections. Stay away from warm and humid places.

If the blisters get ruptured, keep them dry and do not touch or scratch it. If an open blister gets infected, you can put some anti-bacterial ointment, iodine, or hydrogen peroxide to kill the germs.
You can also mix two cups of water together with half a cup of vinegar, and then soak a clean piece of cloth. Wipe the infected area with the cloth and wipe with an upward direction. This will also provide relief.

You should also be careful when it comes to your diet if you have shingles. Chocolate, cereals, and various seeds contain a lot of amino acids that can aggravate the shingles. Drinking fruit juice is recommended as they contain much needed vitamins to restore your immune system without the amount of amino acids found in milk.
