I am 9 months pregnant and just got shingles… I need pain relief!!?

My doctor told me yesterday that I have shingles. I have had an outbreak since last wednesday. It is on my back and around the right side of my front. I can’t get any sleep and the only medicine I can take is Tylenol and it isn’t working well. I am also taking Famvir. Is there anything I can do to help ease the pain without harming my baby?

Ask your doctor about lidocaine patches. I know someone who was given them for shingles and they numb the area so you don’t feel the pain. I can’t imagine it would hurt the baby because it’s external but check with your doctor to see what he/she says. Good luck, I know they’re very, very painful…

Having said that it does help to take some tylenol or ibuprofen on a REGULAR basis.This helps to increase your tolerance to the pain
It also depends on where it is and ifit is in a place that can have a cream applied I would get a product with “capsaicin” in it which does help to deaden the pain. Eg Lakota (although not all of Lakota – you need to check on the ingredients) , Zostrix and there are others.

There is also a herbal/homeopatic product called NEURAGEN which I just happen to have in my desk drawer. It is made by BIOMED and apparently there web site is www.originbiomed.com

I have used this with great success. It is an oily product and really does help.

The problem with shingles is that is actually nerve pain. Also the pain does continue after the infection has gone.Often called “post-herpetic pain”

If the pain is really bad there are a couple of prescription meds that do target this type of pain. There is Lyrica and also Neurontin

I have a pill for the virus, but want to know which pain killer is best for the symptom of severe pain.

Ok. I haddent done meth in years. Bit I went on a fishing tripband it ended up being a 2 week benge. I slept probly 20 hours. I got a massive sunburn. I way took it 2 far. My sunburn had cm and gone and before I knew it I had been up six days. I think it killed my emune system. I took a 4 hour nap. … my back had been itching bad, real bad. Then I wnt anothef 4 days. My skin had already peeled and was fresh. And all of a sudder!!! I have hundred of painfull sores on my chest and back. My scars are melting off and turning into blisters. This is so painfull… P.S. plz no lectures on meth use I WILL NOT use again. I am in pain and scared. It is spredding fast. I have fever, I am tinglingand out of breath. .. what is this and how do I fix it. PLZ HELP!!!

However since I started taking my meds, I’ve developed these random and sporatic chest pains in my lower sternum? It kind of feels like swallowing food you haven’t fully chewed…or like heartburn (but I’ve never had heartburn so I don’t know what it’s like). It doesn’t interfere with anything that I do, but it’s just kind of weird to me considering I’ve never had any kind of chest pain in my life. It’s very mild and comes and goes. Is this something I should be concerned about…or wait out?

(P.S. I’m 23 female – no IDEA how I got Shingles…)

Apply enough ointment to cover the lesion(s) completely. A one-half inch ribbon of ointment should cover approximately 4 square inches of surface area. Avoid getting this medication in the eyes. Zovirax topical is usually applied every 3 hours, six times a day for seven days. Follow your doctor\’s instructions. Use Zovirax topical for the full amount of time prescribed, even if you begin to feel better. Your symptoms may start to improve before the infection is completely treated. Lesions caused by herpes viruses should be kept as clean and dry as possible. Wearing loose clothing may help to prevent irritation of the lesions.

Warnings/Precautions

Before using Zovirax topical, tell your doctor if you have any other medical conditions or if you use any other medications. Zovirax topical is in the FDA pregnancy category C, which means that it is not known whether it will harm an unborn baby. Do not use Zovirax topical without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant. It is not known whether Zovirax topical passes into breast milk. Do not use Zovirax topical without first talking to your doctor if you are breast feeding a baby.

Missed Dose

Apply it as soon as you remember and apply further doses at your regular interval (e.g., every 3 hours) until you go to bed. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Possible Side Effects

No serious side effects are expected during treatment with Zovirax topical. If you suspect an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; rash; hives; itching; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face) seek emergency medical attention. Other less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to use Zovirax topical and talk to your doctor if you experience itching, stinging, burning, or a rash. These side effects should resolve quickly. Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

Storage

Store below 25oC. Do not refrigerate.

Overdose

An overdose of this medication is not likely to occur. If you suspect an overdose or ingestion of Zovirax topical, call an emergency room or poison control left for advice.

More Information

Zovirax Cream is contra-indicated in patients known to be hypersensitive to acyclovir or propylene glycol. Zovirax is most effective if it is started within 48 hours of when the rash first appears. Follow the directions for using Zovirax provided by your doctor.
