Your Questions About Shingles

Susan asks…

I am 9 months pregnant and just got shingles… I need pain relief!!?

My doctor told me yesterday that I have shingles. I have had an outbreak since last wednesday. It is on my back and around the right side of my front. I can’t get any sleep and the only medicine I can take is Tylenol and it isn’t working well. I am also taking Famvir. Is there anything I can do to help ease the pain without harming my baby?

admin answers:

Ask your doctor about lidocaine patches. I know someone who was given them for shingles and they numb the area so you don’t feel the pain. I can’t imagine it would hurt the baby because it’s external but check with your doctor to see what he/she says. Good luck, I know they’re very, very painful…
You have to get a script for the patches.

Sandy asks…

how can i get relief from the pain of shingles?

i have shingles on my front and back very badly i need something to help with the pain also the itching please can you help me

admin answers:

Zorivax only shortens the duration by a few days or so. It is also a very expensive drug. New drugs, like Famvir are also on the market.
Strong pain relievers to get you through until it goes away on its own are the best answer. Tylenol with codeine, Vicodin, and Lortabs are frequently used.

George asks…

How do you get relief from shingle pain?

admin answers:

Shingle pain is awful and is not really helped by regular
Having said that it does help to take some tylenol or ibuprofen on a REGULAR basis. This helps to increase your tolerance to the pain
It also depends on where it is and ifit is in a place that can have a cream applied I would get a product with “capsaicin” in it which does help to deaden the pain. Eg Lakota (although not all of Lakota – you need to check on the ingredients) , Zostrix and there are others.

There is also a herbal/homeopatic product called NEURAGEN which I just happen to have in my desk drawer. It is made by BIOMED and apparently there web site is www.originbiomed.com

I have used this with great success. It is an oily product and really does help.

The problem with shingles is that is actually nerve pain. Also the pain does continue after the infection has gone.Often called “post-herpetic pain”

If the pain is really bad there are a couple of prescription meds that do target this type of pain. There is Lyrica and also Neurontin
Do speak with your doctor as you do not need to suffer.

Lisa asks…

I am 29 years old and found out today that I have shingles. Does anyone have any pain relief suggestions?

admin answers:

Treatment goals for shingles are to reduce pain and discomfort, to hasten healing of blisters and to prevent the disease from spreading.

Early treatment (within 2 or 3 days of developing the rash) reduces the severity of shingles. A patient with herpes zoster on the face should see a physician immediately, because infection of the eye could lead to blindness. My father had this happen to him. And he said the pain never stopped.

Because a virus causes shingles, the main treatment is antiviral medication: acyclovir (Zovirax), famcyclovir (Famvir), or valacyclovir (Valtrex). These pills are taken three to five times a day for 7 to10 days.

Other drugs such as prednisone may be given to relieve the inflammation. Prescription pain relievers and low doses of antidepressant medication should be given to ease the pain. When the pain is severe, at times a nerve block is ordered.

See your doctor and go over the suggestions I have given. I’m sure that will help you feel better quickly.

Kind regards,
Billie

Helen asks…

I was just diagnosed with shingles and need to know the best drugs to take for pain. What have you taken?

If you had shingles, what drugs were you on.

Doc gave me Valtrex and I asked for pain relief too.
To those asking why I asked, please be smart enough to re-read the question and statement.

I have a pill for the virus, but want to know which pain killer is best for the symptom of severe pain.
To the person who called me a moron, re-read the statement. I went to the doctor….I was looking for feed back on the med he gave me and searching for ideas on pain help.
Rick…thanks for the straight answer. I don’t drink but I will keep looking for a pain reliever. Thanks for the kind words.

admin answers:

Ask your doctor if you can use Lidocaine Patches. They work well for pain. You wear them 12 hours on and 12 hours off. Good luck.

Human Simplex Virus Management with Valtrex Valacyclovir

Human Simplex Virus Management with Valtrex Valacyclovir

Genital herpes can be very irritable and painful when you experience the symptoms. Even when you had suffered from an active herpes outbreak earlier but are out of danger now, you know that the virus can reactivate itself anytime and give you those painful blisters and itches. So getting quick relief from an active outbreak of herpes is just as important as minimizing the risk of possible future outbreaks. Valtrex is the medicine you can trust for both. This medicine is also used for the treatment of cold sores in children under 12 years and chickenpox in children over 2 years. Valtrex is also recommended for the treatment of shingles in adults.

Valtrex valacyclovir – How it works

Marketed by GlaxoSmithKline, Valtrex has valacyclovir as its active ingredient. Valacyclovir is a prodrug, i.e., an inactive or less active substance which becomes active inside the body. Once it goes inside the body, it changes to aciclovir and prevents the action of DNA polymerase, a viral enzyme. The entire process prevents the herpes simplex virus from multiplying and affecting the healthy cells.

Valtrex works best only in healthy individuals

Valtrex can give you relief from the symptoms of herpes and it can also protect you from possible future outbreaks, but only if you have a healthy immune system. This is because the natural defense mechanism of your body must be strong enough to fight the herpes simplex virus.

Valtrex and safe sex – Reducing the risk of spreading genital herpes

You should always engage in safe sex practices, such as using a condom, to reduce the risk of spreading the herpes infection to your partner. Also, do not engage in any kind of sexual activities once you or your partner is having an active outbreak.

Dosing options

Valtrex is a once-a-day medicine, available in the dose of 500mg. Take one pill everyday for 5-10 days to get relief from the herpes symptoms. For the treatment of cold sores, follow the same dosing option for 3 days and for the treatment of shingles, take Valtrex for 7 days. But always consult a doctor before you start using Valtrex for any of these treatments. In case you forget to take a dose, take it when you remember and then take the next dose as per normal timing. Also, call your doctor as soon as you develop the genital herpes symptoms or other problems that Valtrex can treat. Delaying the start of medication may not help you much.

Side effects of Valtrex

The most common side effects of Valtrex include nausea, headache, stomach pain, and dizziness. But these are usually mild and go away on their own. Other less common side effects are joint pain, low blood cell counts, painful periods in women, and depression.

Before taking Valtrex, tell your doctor if:

you have a nervous system problem or kidney problem
you are suffering from HIV-AIDS
you have had a kidney transplant or bone marrow transplant
you are pregnant or soon to be pregnant
you are breastfeeding
you take any other medicine

Valtrex online

You can buy Valtrex online, safely and discreetly from the comfort of your home. All you need is an online consultation with a panel of highly qualified doctors before you can place your order. But do check out if the online clinic is registered and has a valid street address and contact number.

Tom – Health Adviser and Webmaster of online health clinic Meds4all.co.uk. He has written many articles on Valtrex Tablets for Genital Herpes Treatment. Valtrex Online can be got from an online pharmacy over internet

Who is most likely to develop chickenpox?

Who is most likely to develop chickenpox?

Article by Groshan Fabiola

Studies have concluded that 75% to 90% of the cases of chickenpox were encountered in children aged less than 10. Every year, 10% of those between 5 and 9 years old and 2% of those aged 10 to 14 develop chickenpox every year. All these percents will decrease in a few years, when the young vaccinated children will get older.

It seems that the disease appears in late winter and early spring months and is transmitted through saliva, sneezing and coughing. Generally towels, bed sheets, and clothes are not responsible for the transmission of the disease.

The spreading of the disease is possible within two days before the spots appear on skin and the end of the blister stage. This means five to seven days of possible contamination. After the dry scabs form the rate of contamination decreases. Therefore, it is best to keep away your child from any contacts, including from going to school, for about 10 days.

Once your child has had chickenpox he is exposed to shingles too for the rest of his life. 10 to 20% of those who have had chickenpox will suffer from shingles later. In US, 600,000 to 850,000 people develop shingles every year and the number of affected people is increasing every year.

It seems that the risk of getting shingles (herpes zoster) is increasing with the age. More rarely, children can get herpes zoster too. 5% of those aged under 15 have developed shingles. It seems that this happens if the child has a weakened immune system or if he had chickenpox before he was one years old.

The risk of developing shingles is increased for those who have problems with their immune system like those who have AIDS, cancer, diabetes. Those who follow a treatment for AIDS containing protease inhibitors are also exposed to shingles. 15% of those who have Hodgkin’s disease, lymphomas and other cancers and are following chemotherapy are at risk of having shingles. Drugs called immunosuppressant are exposing patients to herpes zoster and other infections too. These drugs are: Azathioprine (Imuran), Chlorambucil, Cyclophosphamide, Cyclosporine, and Cladribine. These drugs are generally used in those who have suffered an organ transplant but they can also be used in treating systemic lupus erythematosus, Crohn’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis.Only those who have a good immune system response and those who have been vaccinated against chickenpox and shingles are spared from developing them

admin answers:

Shingles can come out if your have put your body through a lot of stress and/or weakened your immune system. Shingles usually occurs on one half of the trunk (left or right) along a nerve pathway. They ARE very painful. You may have shingles, or if you’ve never had chicken pox, or if the blisters are on both the left and the right sides…you might have something else, maybe a super infection over the sunburned areas. You need to have a doctor look at it. If it is shingles, he/she might give you Valtrex to help speed healing (but it still will take some time), or if a super infection – an antibiotic.

Sandra asks…

I would like to know if shingles can cause a person to get mono again right after the infection.?

Have had chicken pox, mono, epstein -barr virus and Cmv now just got over shingles. Its been 3 weeks and cannot shake this tired feeling and symptoms of mono again.

admin answers:

You need to build up your immune system. There is a most excellent set of chapters on health and immunity in the Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine by Murray and Pizzorno, and I commend them to you for your benefit.
In the meantime, take 1 gram of vitamin C with each meal, and a time release B 100 complex daily. Also take a high potency multiple vitamin and mineral supplement. Olive leaf extract may help suppress viruses; take as directed. That will be a good start. Good luck and God bless!

James asks…

Is it possible to have shingles in a very small area instead of widespread as most doctors will tell you?

I was told by my Doctor and several others that I have shingles.I have the severe pain before the first breakout, that is how I know I am getting ready to have an outbreak. And I had a dermatologist tell he didn’t think it was shingles cause my body was not completely covered.Could he be right? My skin is so sensitive and painful in the area of where the shingles are beginning to form, that the wind blowing hurts the area

admin answers:

Shingles can appear in an isolated area, not necessarily over the whole body.

Carol asks…

can an infant (10 mo.) catch the virus that causes shingles/chicken pox from someone who was just vaccinated?

My 10 month old son was being babysat for by his great grandmother, who had her shingles vaccine at lunchtime. She was told it would be fine as long as she wore a mask since he won’t get the chicken pox vaccine until he turns 1. I am just wondering if anyone knows the likelihood of him catching anything serious- mask or not- from this? Thanks!

admin answers:

Virus shedding after a vaccination is a very serious issue.
The virus can be present in her saliva, tears, mucus, sweat and feces for up to 15 days. The safest thing would be to avoid anymore contact with her for 2 weeks.

Please don’t get the chicken pox vaccine for him. Not only is it not very effective, but because of it, the medical community is starting to see a very high increase of shingles in older teens and young adults.

Thomas asks…

Do shingles cause chest pains?

I went to the doctor last week after a mysterious rash like thing appeared a week and a half ago and was told I have shingles. I’m taking antibiotics and acyclovir, and luckily other than the insane itching, I haven’t had any pain since the original symptoms.

However since I started taking my meds, I’ve developed these random and sporatic chest pains in my lower sternum? It kind of feels like swallowing food you haven’t fully chewed…or like heartburn (but I’ve never had heartburn so I don’t know what it’s like). It doesn’t interfere with anything that I do, but it’s just kind of weird to me considering I’ve never had any kind of chest pain in my life. It’s very mild and comes and goes. Is this something I should be concerned about…or wait out?

(P.S. I’m 23 female – no IDEA how I got Shingles…)

Thank you!

admin answers:

Yes, because shingles can be a viral infection

Zovirax

Zovirax

Article by John

Zovirax is used to treat herpes infections of the skin, lip, and genitals; herpes zoster (shingles); and chickenpox. It does not cure herpes infections but decreases pain and itching and promotes healing. Topical Zovirax does not prevent the recurrence of sores but may decrease pain and itching if applied when the earliest symptoms first appear. Oral Zovirax decreases the frequency and severity of recurrent sores, but it is used only by people with severe herpes infections because of possible adverse effects. This medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

How Taken

Treatment with Zovirax topical should be started as soon as possible after the first appearance of symptoms (e.g. tingling, burning, blisters). Wash your hands before and after applying Zovirax topical. Wear a glove or a finger cot or use an applicator (e.g. cotton swab) when applying Zovirax topical to avoid spreading the virus to other body parts and to other people. Apply enough ointment to cover the lesion(s) completely. A one-half inch ribbon of ointment should cover approximately 4 square inches of surface area. Avoid getting this medication in the eyes. Zovirax topical is usually applied every 3 hours, six times a day for seven days. Follow your doctor\’s instructions. Use Zovirax topical for the full amount of time prescribed, even if you begin to feel better. Your symptoms may start to improve before the infection is completely treated. Lesions caused by herpes viruses should be kept as clean and dry as possible. Wearing loose clothing may help to prevent irritation of the lesions.

Warnings/Precautions

Before using Zovirax topical, tell your doctor if you have any other medical conditions or if you use any other medications. Zovirax topical is in the FDA pregnancy category C, which means that it is not known whether it will harm an unborn baby. Do not use Zovirax topical without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant. It is not known whether Zovirax topical passes into breast milk. Do not use Zovirax topical without first talking to your doctor if you are breast feeding a baby.

Missed Dose

Apply it as soon as you remember and apply further doses at your regular interval (e.g., every 3 hours) until you go to bed. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Possible Side Effects

No serious side effects are expected during treatment with Zovirax topical. If you suspect an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; rash; hives; itching; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face) seek emergency medical attention. Other less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to use Zovirax topical and talk to your doctor if you experience itching, stinging, burning, or a rash. These side effects should resolve quickly. Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

Storage

Store below 25oC. Do not refrigerate.

Overdose

An overdose of this medication is not likely to occur. If you suspect an overdose or ingestion of Zovirax topical, call an emergency room or poison control left for advice.

More Information

Zovirax Cream is contra-indicated in patients known to be hypersensitive to acyclovir or propylene glycol. Zovirax is most effective if it is started within 48 hours of when the rash first appears. Follow the directions for using Zovirax provided by your doctor.

Herpes Treatment For A More Comfortable Life

Herpes Treatment For A More Comfortable Life

There are eight different strains of this virus, the most widely diagnosed is Herpes Simplex (HSV1) causing genital and oral sold sores and the other is Herpes Zoster (HSV2) which is the cause of shingles. It affects men and women and can be passed on to newborn babies. Herpes treatment can be done homeopathically or by taking conventional medication to keep outbreaks at a minimum. There is no cure for the disease.

The word herpes comes from the Greek word herpein which mean creep. Creep is what this virus does as it enters one’s body and stays dormant while it is multiplying. It is difficult to control and the severity of the disease varies from person to person. It resides in the nerves where it flares up occasionally. The stages are primary, latent and shedding.

Outbreaks, or symptoms, can occur when the body is under stress. When the virus is first contracted symptoms are absent and this is the incubation period. In about 2 or more weeks red bumps will appear on the skin and they will turn into fluid filled blisters that are painful and can burn or itch. These blisters can then break and cause sores to form.

Oral herpes can cause pain, burning and tingling around the mouth, tongue or on the lips. A fever can accompany these symptoms and eating can be difficult. The first episode of genital herpes is usually the worst, it can cause pain, swelling and itching in the genital area.

Having a blood panel or a blood test can tell if you have one or both types of the disease. There are no vaccinations to prevent contracting the virus and there is no cure for it. There are antiviral medications on the market to treat symptoms and minimize outbreaks. Holistic therapies offer immune system support and balance out the energy levels in the body to prevent recurrences.

Alternative treatments are often very helpful. Self-hypnosis can assist in easing the pain. Acupuncture eases and targets neuralgic pain. Ayurveda medicine, one of the oldest known medical sciences, treats the patient with roots and herbs. Holistic therapies include eliminating stress, deep breathing and guided imagery.

About 80 million people or one in 5 people in America have been diagnosed with the virus. This diagnosis can have a strong emotional effect which only makes one more prone to getting outbreaks. Participating in counseling and finding a good treatment plan is important. The more educated one is about the disease the less fear they will have and the more balance they will feel. When an outbreak occurs know how to treat it and abstain from sexual contact when symptoms are present. Wearing cotton underwear and avoiding tight clothing will also aid in keeping one comfortable.

Keeping the body in balance will help prevent outbreaks and minimize the length of them when they do occur. Take Vitamin C to strengthen one’s immune system and to aid in tissue repair. A vegetarian diet is best if you can do it, if not include lots of fruits and vegetable in your diet. Avoid spicy foods, alcohol, sugar and do not smoke. Practice being calm and eliminating fear, herpes treatment depends a lot on how you manage your symptoms and take care of yourself.
