Touted by many as a medical breakthrough, Laser Med Center utilizes a progressive laser therapy which has created positive results treating typical and atypical trigeminal neuralgia, atypical facial pain, and post-herpetic trigeminal neuralgia.
The Anatomy of Trigeminal
The trigeminal nerve is the fifth cranial nerve and runs down each side of the face; medically you will see it written as a roman numeral (V). Therefore, the three branches of the nerve are referred to as V1 (ophthalmic), V2 (maxillary), and V3 (mandibular). Most of the function of the trigeminal nerve is sensory, which means it transmits pressure, touch, pain, and temperature signals to the brain. Only the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve has some motor (controls movement) function.
In some atypical trigeminal cases, some other nerves may be affected, including the 9th cranial nerve, which could send pain down the back of the tongue and down the throat. In some cases, symptoms may be felt in the scalp or the ear.
The Symptoms of Trigeminal Neuralgia
According to the Mayo Clinic (a top authority on neuroscience), trigeminal neuralgia warning signs may include one or more of these patterns:
*Occasional twinges of mild pain.*Episodes of severe, shooting or jabbing pain that may feel like an electric shock.*Spontaneous attacks of pain or attacks triggered by things such as touching the face, chewing, speaking and brushing teeth. *Bouts of pain lasting from a few seconds to several seconds.*Episodes of several attacks lasting days, weeks, months or longer – some people have periods when they experience no pain.*Pain in areas supplied by the trigeminal nerve (nerve branches), including the cheek, jaw, teeth, gums, lips, or less often the eye and forehead. *Pain affecting one side of your face at a time.*Pain focused in one spot or spread in a wider pattern.*Attacks becoming more frequent and intense over time
The Causes of Trigeminal Neuralgia
There are several different causes of trigeminal neuralgia and because people’s symptoms change, many cases may go un-diagnosed or are difficult to diagnose. Some of the factors that contribute to trigeminal neuralgia are:
*Nerve damage or trauma relating to a dental procedure, surgery, or accident.*A vessel that is pressing directly on the root of the nerve.*A tumor pressing on the nerve. (rare)*Advanced MS that can cause the Myelin Sheath that covers the nerve to deteriorate. (rare)*Lyme Disease trigeminal neuralgia.*Post-Herpetic (shingles) trigeminal neuralgia.*Other viral infections.*In many cases there may be no known cause.
