What is Shingles – Herpes Zoster: Shingles (known also as Herpes Zoster) is a very sore, rash caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. It affects a limited area of the body and skin. Not only can it be very painful but it can also make you feel weak, tired and many even cause severe depression.

What causes Shingles – Herpes Zoster: You can only get shingles if you have previously had chickenpox. After having chickenpox the virus lies dormant in the nerves, and shingles occurs when it is revitalised in one particular nerve to the skin, this explains the way it affects a certain band or area of the skin. Many times the outbreak is caused by a decrease in your body’s natural resistance or a weakness to the immune system. Most people who get shingles are more than 49 years old.

Shingles – Herpes Zoster – Symptoms: Usualy the first symptom of shingles is often over-sensitivity or a burning sensation on the skin in the affected area. After a few days, a rash develops. It usually appears as a band or path, following the route of a nerve under the skin. At first, the rash consists of small red spots and reddened skin in the same area. The spots then turn into small blisters, which dry up after a few days, and gradually form scabs. Shingles is often a very painful condition, since it affects the nerves, the pain may continue after the rash has cleared, sometimes lingering for months or years.

Shingles – Herpes Zoster – Treatment: Shingles is most often treated with acyclovir, famciclovir, or valacyclovir (also named: Valtrex). Your doctor will decide which of these medicines might work the best for you. Most of the medications work better if they are started within the first couple of days after you get the shingles rash. Often a doctor will also prescribe a steroid medicine to reduce the pain and swelling. If you get Shingles of the eye it is often treated with antiviral medicines and steroids.

Shingles – Herpes Zoster – Prevention: There is a study under way for a vaccine to prevent shingles, called the ‘Shingles Prevention Study’. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) is asking for volunteers for the study at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Shingles, and 33 weeks pregnant?

I am 33 weeks pregnant, my cousin has been diagnosed with shingles. The doctors said she had them Thursday June 3 and on Friday June 4, we gave each other a hug.. Should I be worried? Also how contagious are shingles? Are they dangerous for my baby if I do catch them?

The shingles virus is the same as the Chicken Pox virus. At your age I would suspect two things, either you’ve already HAD the chicken pox, or received the vaccine. Either way, your Ob/Gyn should have covered this with you. If you’ve HAD the Pox, then you would likely NOT get infected. If you’re unsure of both, then your provider can do a “Vericella Titer” through blood work. This will give you your immune status. Unless you rubbed up directly against your cousin’s open shingles outbreak, this would be VERY difficult to get. Getting the chicken pox while pregnant CAN be fatal, but it’s rather rare. Check with your provider about this. I really don’t think you need to be worried.

I have had shingles in the past but now its different because I have a 7 month old baby and it worries me. My question is..Is shingles only contagious by coming in contact with the fluid,or can it be airborne too? If I have a outbreak can I just keep it covered well and all should be okay for my baby so he dont get chickenpox?

Shingles during pregnancy?

I’m 35 weeks pregnant and just found out I have shingles. They put me on Valtrex for a week. Will the shingles cause any harm to the baby? Are they contagious? I have birthing classes this weekend and don’t know if I should stay home or not because of the shingles. any advice?

Stay on the med and take it exactly when told. Don’t put other mom’s at risk by going to the class, even if your rash has scabbed over. You wouldn’t appreciate it if you found one of them were in the infectious stage. There is some studies that suggest exposure to this real early in pregnancy can cause birth defects.

You are along at the right part of your pregnancy where your child may develop chickenpox (pediatric shingles) over the next five years, but it’s rare.

This is so textbook and with the times given and you wanting to be around other mothers when infected, I suspect this question isn’t for real. But I looked it up for you just in case when I saw no more answers.

I broke out with this yesterday… it itches like crazy!
I am under alot of stress… so I thought it could be shingles?
I had a c-section 7 days ago to have my first baby, and I haven’t been sleeping well in addition to all the stress a newborn brings! I can’t remember if the doctors put anything on me I might have been allergic to…?
I’m not taking any medication that would cause this.
It doesn’t quite look like pictures of shingles on the internet as they aren’t fluid-filled, but they do have white heads on them, like an ant bite.
If it isn’t shingles, what could it be, and is it contagious to the baby?
I have had chicken pox.
It is not so uncomfortable that I feel the need to go to a doctor before morning… I put some anti-itch cream on it, and it’s not that bad.

The photo looks like a photo of your belly and the rash in on the left and right side. If this is true it’s not shingles, as shingles doesn’t pass the midline, secondly shingles doesn’t itch, it hurts, most often described as a burn.

Possible causes are…
1) allergy to something for example, cosmetic, hygiene product, medication, food.
2) insect bite: flees, chiggers, scabies
3 plant contact: poison ivy, poison oak
4) bacterial infection

The history of new exposure to something would suggests 1
The history of pets, exposure to pine straw or another person with similar rash would suggests 2
The history of plant contact the day before or wearing clothes that someone else wore who worked with plants, would suggest 3
Tenderness or swollen glands would suggest 4

You can use benadryl over the counter or calamine lotion topically but if you plan on seeing the doctor tomorrow, I wouldn’t use a topical as it will interfere with the exam and any scraping study the doctor might do. One patient of mine told me that she got relief from an itching rash by rubbing the rash with the inner surface of a banana peal, no joke.

My baby is due soon and my Mother has shingles. Bit of help?

My wife and I are due our baby soon. He’s due beginning of July. My Mum however has shingles. Well, she has the start of shingles. She just has the pain in her back but she does not have a rash yet. She knows it is shingles because she has had it before. She has been to the doctor but has only been prescribed pain killers. I think there is a treatment you can give but this can only be given when the rash has appeared, which it hasn’t done yet.
So, if my baby comes and my Mum still has the start of shingles but without the rash is she OK seeing the child? The way I have read in to it is that somebody with shingles can pass chicken pox on to somebody who hasn’t had it. It is only contagious though when there is a rash. In that case, would she be ok to see the baby if she didn’t have a rash?
I’m very aware that this could be dangerous to my baby and I am on the side of “until it all clears up” camp. It is a difficult position to be in though because at the moment she is not contagious according to the research I have done and obviously she wants to see her new and only grandchild. She is also aware of the position she is now in. So with this in mind and without trying to sound too demanding, please give a little thought before answering and blindly informing me that she shouldn’t and that is that.

Has your wife ever had the chicken pox (not the chicken pox vaccine, but the actual chicken pox)? If she has, then there is no danger to your wife and unborn baby now. If not, she should probably keep her distance from your mother even now – chicken pox during pregnancy can be tough. If your wife has had chicken pox and plans to breastfeed, her natural immunity should pass on and protect the baby (but I would be careful nonetheless).
If your wife did not have the chicken pox, or does not plan to breastfeed, honestly I would keep Grandma away once the rash appears until it clears up. The timing is bad, too, as she will likely break out within a couple of weeks and it could be August before it clears up.

Shingles is a condition characterized by painful blisters that typically appear in a linear distribution on the skin following nerve pathways. Shingles is caused by reactivation of a previous infection with the varicella-zoster virus. Shingles is a herpes virus infection (herpes zoster) that usually affects a nerve, causing pain in one area of the body. Infection of the ganglia of the posterior roots of the spinal nerves or the fifth cranial nerve by the varcella-zoster virus (shingles), which also causes chicken pox; it is marked by a painful eruption of vesicles usually on one side of the body along the course of one or more cutaneous nerves.

Shingles is derived from the Latin and French words for belt or girdle, reflecting distribution of the rash in a broad band. This band is usually only on one side of the body and represents a dermatome–the area that a single sensory nerve supplies in the skin.

Today’s treatments provide a variety of ways to shorten the duration of a shingles outbreak and to control the associated pain. Sometimes, however, shingles leads to a chronic painful condition called post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) that can be difficult to treat. Putting a medicated lotion (two brand names: Benadryl, Caladryl) on the blisters might reduce the pain and itching. Putting cool compresses soaked in an astringent liquid (two brand names: Bluboro, Domeboro) on the blisters and sores might make them hurt or itch less.

The first sign of shingles is often burning or tingling pain, or sometimes numbness or itch, in one particular location on only one side of the body. After several days or a week, a rash of fluid-filled blisters, similar to chickenpox, appears in one area on one side of the body. Shingles pain can be mild or intense. Some people have mostly itching; some feel pain from the gentlest touch or breeze. The most common location for shingles is a band, called a dermatome, spanning one side of the trunk around the waistline.

Yes, shingles is contagious. Shingles can be spread from an affected person to children or adults who have not had chickenpox. Instead of developing shingles, these people develop chickenpox. Once they have had chickenpox, people cannot catch shingles (or contract the virus) from someone else. Once infected, however, people have the potential to develop shingles later in life.

Doctors can distinguish shingles from chickenpox (or dermatitis or poison ivy) by the way the spots are distributed. Since shingles occurs in an area of the skin that is supplied by sensory fibers of a single nerve–called a dermatome–the rash usually appears in a well-defined band on one side of the body, typically the torso; or on one side of the face, around the nose and eyes. (Shingles’ peculiar name derives from the Latin cingulum, which means girdle or belt.) If a diagnosis is in doubt, lab tests can confirm the presence of the virus.

To help with the pain of shingles, your doctor might have you take an over-the-counter pain medicine like acetaminophen (one brand name: Tylenol) or ibuprofen (one brand name: Motrin). Aspirin is not recommended because using it might cause a liver problem called Reye’s syndrome.

Vaccines can help reduce the risk of shingles, while early treatment can help shorten a shingles infection and minimize the chance of complications. If shingles causes severe pain, your doctor might have you take a prescription pain medicine.

Good home care can help you feel better faster. Take care of any skin sores, and keep them clean. Take your medicines as directed. And use over-the-counter pain medicines to relieve pain.

Genital herpes may not be deadly, but it can be physically painful and emotionally debilitating. Those who have it may suffer from painful sores as well as feelings of shame, regret, isolation, and undesirability.

“We, as a society, don’t do well with STDs,” says Terri Warren, R.N., owner of the Westover Heights Clinic in Portland, Ore., specializing in the treatment of sexually transmitted diseases. “When people have a lifelong STD, they feel dirty, damaged, and unapproachable. Most people have a dramatic drop in self-esteem.”

Curtis Phinney of Rockville, Md., was devastated when he first discovered he had genital herpes. “I was very interested in finding a new successful long-term monogamous relationship,” says Phinney, who had been divorced before he became infected. “I was having difficulty as it was. With herpes I thought it would be impossible. I thought I was unlovable, untouchable, undesirable.”

Genital herpes is on the rise. Since the late 1970s, the number of Americans infected with the virus has increased 30 percent to about 45 million, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Genital herpes infects more than 1 of 5 adolescents and adults, the CDC says. It is more common in blacks than in whites, and more likely to infect women than men. Compared to 20 years ago, it’s about five times more common in 12- to 19-year-old whites and twice as common in adults ages 20 to 29.

The scary part is that most people with genital herpes don’t know they have it, and are unaware they may be spreading it to others, says Warren. Many have no symptoms or mistake their symptoms for something else, such as jock itch, insect bites, hemorrhoids, yeast infections, razor burn, or allergies to laundry detergent.

Of even greater concern is growing evidence that people with genital herpes are at greater risk of getting HIV (the virus that causes AIDS) if they have unprotected sex with someone infected with HIV. And HIV-infected people who are also infected with genital herpes may have more frequent and severe outbreaks and their episodes may be more difficult to treat.

In the past, genital herpes was diagnosed solely by visual inspection and laboratory culture of an active sore. Herpes may now be diagnosed with a blood test, even when no symptoms are apparent or after sores have healed. And while there is no cure for herpes, antiviral drugs have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration that greatly reduce the frequency of outbreaks and shorten their duration and severity. Genital herpes, a sexually transmitted disease (STD), is an infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). HSV is in the same family of viruses that causes chickenpox, shingles and mononucleosis. There are two types of HSV: HSV-1, which infects 80 percent of the U.S. population, usually appears on the lips in cold sores; HSV-2 is usually found in the genital area. However, if a person with HSV-1 oral herpes (cold sores) performs oral sex, it is possible for the partner to get HSV-1 genital herpes. And HSV-2 can infect the mouth through oral sex.

HSV can cause sores, or lesions, to appear in and around the vaginal area and within the cervix in women, and on the penis and scrotum in men. Both males and females may also get lesions in the urinary tract, around the anal opening, on the buttocks or thighs, and sometimes on other parts of the body.

I received a card from a friend who wrote that she is in sever pain from shingles and the pain meds don’t help

she ask if I had any miracle answers. I remember some thing about a medicine other than a pain medication, but not the name. Does anyone have any ideas? Alternative medicine and things that have worked for you would also be appreiciated as she is terribly depressed by this and we live across country so I can not visit.
I guess I did not explain myself very well, she states that she has been to the docters and all the medication she has been given has not helped. Isn’t two months a long time? When I had them, they only lasted for 3-4 months.

This type of pain is different than muscle pain. It is called neuropathic pain. Meds like gabapentin target this type of pain. There are some new meds on the market that specifically target this type of pain as well. Have him go to the doctor.

Edit: Then go to a different doctor. Even if you get the name of a drug here you can’t get it without going to a doctor. If she is still having pain, try a neurologist or a pain specialist. And no, its not unusual for the pain to last that long. If all conservative measures fail, there is a procedure that essentially kills the sensory nerves in that area that supply the pain – usually done by a neurologist after conservative treatment fails.

How long? -depends on location, extend of outbreak, age, general health, personal factors. I’ve seen those who state it never really hurt, only stung or itched a little on occasion to those who said it affected their every movement the rest of their life.

There are several meds commonly used. Lidocaine patch or cream under occlusion can offer some quick relief. I offer hydrocodone short-term, up to a couple weeks, but most people don’t like it due to side effects and dependence can develop. Long-term, “nerve medicines” are used such as antidepressants.

I have shingles of the face–I’ve posted a couple of times–thanks for the help on those. Can I take a sleeping pill–Ambien—-and the meds for shingles? I take Valtrex, Neurontin and a salve in my eye. Also for hbp, diovan, toprol, and hctz. I’ve developed such burning pain in my neck, shoulder and arm, and a real problem with my eye, feeling like it has something in it which is driving me crazy!
I saw the opth/ and corneal specialist today. Have drops and was told it’s only slightly inflamed and only on the outside white area, not on the front and that’s good so far.
Tell me this will get better. They seem to think it will, but it takes time. I see the opth again next week. Didn’t sleep much last night. Oh, they also prescribed a creme for the pain on my face, neck and arms and it’s not available at several stores around,so won’t get it until MOnday. So frustrated. thanks

Is there anyway to treat shingles without prescription medication?

Recently, I have developed severe pain in my left arm. In addition to this pain, I have a blister like rash. I did some online research and I am almost certain that it is shingles. My insurance company dropped me last week and I cannot afford to go to a doctor.

I am sorry that you don’t have insurance to help with this. In mild cases of shingles outbreaks, you can sometimes manage to control the pain with something like ibuprofen. People did suffer with the outbreaks before there was medication available, but honestly if you can figure any way to see a doctor you will be much more comfortable a lot sooner than you will be without. If you start taking antivirals soon enough, you can cut the time you suffer and help avoid complications like neuralgia. Otherwise, the ibuprofen can help with the pain, and a topical antibiotic ointment like Neosporin can help avoid infection in the broken skin. It also helps if you keep the broken skin covered in a bandage most of the time, since air movement will set off the nerves in that raw skin and make it hurt more. However, if exposure to air doesn’t hurt, it will help the skin stay dry if you can air it out. Just keep it out of sunlight because that tends to make it itch and burn more. Honestly though, do try to get in to see a doctor- even if it’s at the local health department clinic. The medications can make you feel a lot better, sooner.

Cellulitis is a bacterial skin infection that causes redness, warmth and swelling in the skin. It can also cause fever and chills in the body. It is caused by a break in the skin due to an abrasion, a cut or a skin ulcer. Cellulitis may also affect tissues that are underlying the skin and can spread to bloodstream and lymph nodes. It is not a contagious disease as it infects the inner layers of the skin whilst infection is covered by the top layer of the skin.

Signs and symptoms
The common symptoms of cellulitis are skin lesion, shaking, sweating, fatigue and muscle aches. Some additional symptoms of the disease are nausea and vomiting, stiffness in joints and loss of hair at the site of infection. The skin appears tight and warmth appears on the red infected area.

Causes
Cellulitis is caused by two types of bacteria that include streptococcus and staphylococcus. The bacteria enter the body via any break in the skin and can causes infection and inflammation in the body. Some disrupted areas of skin include recent surgery areas, cuts, puncture wounds or ulcers. The disease can even be transmitted through insect and spider bites. The disease is most common on the legs, especially near the shins and ankles.

Risk Factors for Cellulitis
Some factors that can increase the risk of developing cellulitis is if the person has a history of peripheral vascular disease and/or diabetes. As these diseases decrease the blood circulation in the lower extremities and can cause chronic ulcers in the feet, these can act as an entry point for bacterial infection. The cracks on the skin between the toes can also increase the probability of this disease in the same area. The use of immunosuppressive and corticosteroid medications can also increase the risk of developing cellulites. Chickenpox and shingles cause broken blisters on the skin that can also act as potential entry points for bacteria.

Screening and Diagnosis
The doctor can diagnose the disease through a physical examination of the swollen areas and glands. The red infected area on the skin is marked by a pen and any extension of its borders is suspected as cellulitis. The disease is confirmed through blood tests, wound cultures and other tests. An increase in white blood cell count can also indicate a bacterial infection.

Treatment
Cellulitis treatment includes the taking of oral antibiotics, and a close outpatient monitoring of the patient. Antibiotics can control the infection and analgesics will control the pain. The infected area should be elevated so as to minimize swelling. In severe cases, the patient is hospitalized and given intravenous antibiotics as well as close observation. The medication should be taken as directed by the doctor and the entire course of medication should be completed even if the patient starts feeling better.

Prevention
The disease can be prevented from happening by taking some preventive measures when any wounds appear on the body. Wash the wound with soap and water daily, and apply an antibiotic cream and ointment. By covering the wound with a bandage, bacteria can be prevented from entering.

Daily Skin Care
Always moisturize the skin so as to prevent cracking and peeling. Hands and feet can be protected by wearing footwear and gloves.

Cellulitis is an acute inflammation so always treat any superficial skin infections quickly which will avoid any distress.
