Many people attach negative associations to the term ‘herpes’. In fact, there are small differences between shingles and herpes, which produce variations of the identical infection.

The sexually transmitted disease, genital herpes, normally occurs when a person has unprotected sex with numerous partners but it can occur in anybody who has had sex even if only once and their partner has the infection. Genital herpes is caused by the HSV (Herpes simplex virus).

There are almost 100 different types of herpes which affect humans – genital herpes or HSV-2 is only one, while other highly contagious herpes infections can be transmitted via casual contact.

For example, HSV-1 generally causes oral cold sores and may be contracted from infected people through sharing eating utensils or drinking glasses, a casual kiss or having skin to skin contact like wiping a child’s mouth if you have tears or saliva on the tips of your fingers.

Research shows that about 98% of healthy people carry and shed the HSV-1 virus without having an active outbreak. Research reveals how highly contagious it is and also how prevalent it is.

The cytomegalovirus is a herpes virus which causes flu like conditions in adults but may have devastating effects on unborn children.

Herpes varicella-zoster causes chicken pox in children. Prior to vaccine development, family and friends held ‘chicken pox parties’ so that children between 4 to 6 years were infected to prevent them contracting the disease when they grew older when it became a bigger health risk which could result in permanent damage and even death (in their 20’s and older). It produces greater discomfort and pain in older people while lasting longer.

Herpes varicella-zoster will most likely lie dormant for many years after an initial infection and has the potential to reactivate in certain conditions. The reactivated virus causes Shingles which is most common in people over 60 years old who may have considerable stress levels, younger people whose immune systems have been compromised, recipients of organ transplants, cancer victims or effects of medication on immune systems.

Shingles infection mostly presents in the body’s trunk or buttocks alongside specific nerve dermatomes and stays on one side following a specific nerve bundle pathway. Shingles and herpes differ in that shingles is not commonly reactivated a second time after healing (provided the person’s immune system is not compromised) while herpes can reoccur many times.

Shingles is normally painful and often clears on its own requiring supportive pain treatment. Herpetic neuralgia occurs sometimes when the pain does not disappear as the skin clears. It can cause nerve pain which is severe and difficult to control and treat.

Are shingles really a sign that I have HIV??? Please help?

I’m a young person (I like to think healthy young person) but recently my doctor prescribed me with shingles. So I looked at some websites and said that it was rare to have it at a young age anyway, and then it said “Shingles also may be an early signal of HIV infection, especially when it occurs in a younger person” is this true?? Does taht mean I’m not healthy?

No it is not a sign. Your body may produce an immune responce to Shingles or in other words, Herpes zoster, that could potentually raise the antibody level that may register on the HIV tests. Why they say shingles might be “sign of HIV” – could be the other way around. Hiv tests dont detect actual virus. Just antibodies.

Please be very careful and get all the information you can. You’re doingthe right thing by researching. Dont stop.

Im am an ex-iv drug user and recently came up with a case of the shingles, can this be an early sign of HIV?

I did heroin and cocaine for two years, Ive now been clean for about 9 months. I recently came up with the shingles and i was wondering if this could be early signs of HIV?? In the past i shared needles numerous times with other Friends. Last time i was tested was probably about 6 months ago. should a be nervious??

Statistically speaking, 14% of all IV drug users are HIV positive, far more than the average population. Given that you have been clean for 9 month (btw, congratulations) but have tested about 6 months ago, means that it was only 3 months since your last exposure. In some cases, it may take up to 6 months to determine whether you are HIV positive or not. To be on the safe side, I would get tested again, since you are now at the 6 month point. What ever those results are, I would trust. Good luck!

i am 62 years old and for the past couple i have had a scalp problem .the first detre. said searbrric dermatitis. the second dr, said folliculitis. i followed all directions from both dr’s now have the same problems–only worse –called nurse at dr. office she said [ shingles– what are the signs and systems of shinkles–can it be just scalp only. what is the treatment– thank you

Shingles follow a nerve, so they will ussually be all in a line or group. They look like a cluster of blisters, and they itch, if you itch them then they burn, they will start to cause alot of pain the longer you have them. If you have had them for a while it is probably to late for antiviral meds, so you will have to let them run their course. It is a virus, (chicken pox) so it will take time to heal, I belive 7-10 days.

Herpes is an infection that is transmitted from one person to another by physical contact. Herpes simplex virus type-2, commonly known as HSV-2, causes genital herpes. Most people do not experience any symptoms for days or even months after getting infected with HSV-2. This is because herpes simplex virus can remain dormant or inactive in the body without showing any symptoms. It resides in nerve cells and other tissues. But when HSV-2 becomes active, it travels nerve pathways up to the surface of skin and cause outbreak of symptoms.

Herpes symptoms

Usually, the first outbreak of herpes develops within 2 to 20 days after physical contact with an infected person and can continue up to 2 weeks. These symptoms are sometimes so mild that they often go unnoticed. The first outbreak of genital herpes symptoms includes skin ulcers, painful red blisters, fever, pain while urinating, and genital discharge. Later outbreaks are less severe as compared to the first one and include blisters and ulcers, burning sensation around the genitals, and red sores.

What is viral shedding?

During an outbreak of herpes, herpes simplex virus-2 surfaces to skin and viral shedding occurs. Usually, shedding of virus occurs at the site of infections. It is during this period that the herpes virus is considered contagious and can therefore be spread through direct skin-to-skin contact with the infected area. But it is also possible that the herpes virus could be actively shedding at the site of infection without showing any symptoms. This condition is referred to as ‘asymptomatic viral shedding.’ Let’s look at some of the facts about herpes viral shedding:

Herpes simplex virus-1 that mainly causes oral herpes is less likely to shed compared to herpes simplex virus-2 that causes genital herpes.
If you can avoid skin-to-skin contact with the infected area, the chances of spreading the virus because of viral shedding is low.
Some people never show any symptoms of herpes, but can still transmit the virus to others.
In half of the symptomatic cases, herpes viral shedding is estimated to occur in 7 days before and after an outbreak of symptoms.

How to reduce risk of viral shedding?

The shedding of herpes simplex virus at an infection site cannot be eliminated, but it can be reduced with some precautions and antiviral medications. In between outbreak of symptoms, latex condoms should be used during sexual intercourse to protect against viral shedding. But if there are any visible signs or symptoms of outbreak, any contact with the infected area should be avoided.

Antiviral medications are commonly prescribed for treatment of first outbreak of symptoms and controlling later outbreaks. Valtrex (valaciclovir) is a prescription antiviral medications recommended for genital herpes treatment. It reduces the growth and spread of herpes simplex virus and thus help fight off the infection. For genital herpes, a dosage of Valtrex 500mg is prescribed for 5-10 days. For cold sores, Valtrex pill should be taken for 3 days and for shingles, it should be taken for 7 days. If you miss a dose of Valtrex, you should take the missed dose as soon as possible.

I have a buddy that claims she has a primary immunodeficiency of sorts, but I can’t recall it she mentioned which one specifically. Is there a primary immunodeficiency condition that involves the following conditions (I’m not sure if they’re related or not, so give or take a couple symptoms): chronic colds/sniffles/runny nose/etc, increased frequency of flu-like viruses, a higher degree of seriousness when the individual gets a flu-like virus, fibromyalgia, prone to infection, prone to scarring. I also know she’s had nervous disorders, a few hormone imbalances, and suffered from Shingles Disease about a year ago and still hurts from it. Any ideas?

spasms alittle, the back of my throat is feeling cool and uncomfortable, ive been really weak since it happened on 5/31, and i always stay up really late but now im never really getting tired. my dog is the one who bit me accidently and he has all of his shots but these symptoms all related to rabies but my dog is fine. i dont know whats going on, i have a very week ammune system, i was paralyzed from the waist down for two weeks when i was 10 from fifths disease, then had bells palsy, mono, and the shingles in my ear when i was 15, and now im 19 i dont know whats happening to me, i got stiches from the dogbite but its been over two weeks now and my stomach feels really really weird, my hands are shaking because im really nervous about rabies but my dog is fine, i do not want to put him down to get tested, what should i do, what do you think is wring with me?

I have Multiple Sclerosis and have also just been diagnosed with Addisons Disease?

I was diagnosed for MS 7 months ago though MRI’s showing multiple lesions on brian and spinal cord and also a positive visual potential test showing optic neuritis. Symptoms of numbness pins and needles, dizziness, fatigue, speech and memory problems etc.

Well 2 weeks ago i was also diagnosed with Addison’s Disease through blood tests, tilt table test, CT scan and ACTH stimulation test.

Well anyway i have been feeling so stressed lately and a bit down, but i have just come up with shingles. Can shingles be caused by all the stress i have been under? Do my diseases/disorders compromise my immune system and make me more susceptible to viruses? And how long will the pain from my shingles last? Im just over feeling sick all the time.

With your other problems it probably would be a real good idea to get your immune system as good as possible by supplementing what you cannot get from food: Vitamin C for example is one good immune system booster, it is inexpensive, and taken daily it can actually boost it a little. You can also add a daily regimen of pineapple juice to your diet—believe it or not, pineapple juice does have bromelin and that reduces inflammation a great deal(I already do that to beat joint pain from severe athritis). Ask your doctor if you can use supplements such as fish oil or other boosters for your immune system because some of the meds you need might actually interfer with them. There is a supplement out there which is supposed to help a great deal when you got MS, but I cannot testify to that–I’ve heard it from others. If you like to eat spicy, add cayenne pepper to your diet, 1/4 of a teaspoon per day actully helps your immune system, and so do kefir and yogurt because of the probiotics in them—if you can boost your immune system, then your body can handle the other problems better. I drink a warm gloass of water with 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper every morning, drink one glass of pineapple juice, and eat 3 yogurt and about 24 oz of kefir every day. I have RP all right, but other than that am I on no medication, have excellent blood pressure, no diabetes, and am fitter than some young women half my age or less(I am 58). My husband has blood tested, and it is not any of the following :

Shingles
Lyme Disease
impetigo
ringworm
heat rash

The put him on “doxycycline” for 7 days, and told him to see a internal medicine specialist, b/c they didnt know what was making him so sick, after 3 blood test.

Symptoms : nausea, fatigue, muscle & joint pain, can’t sleep, dizzy, blacking out, elevated blood sugar, blurry vision, coughing, vomiting, and now he has dropped 23lbs in 12 days.

Been to the emergency room twice….a dr. will not see him until May 11th.

Please help!!! Thank you!
