Herpes Symptoms And What To Look For

Herpes Symptoms And What To Look For

Article by Terry Schierer

In the event you experience little sores or openings in your private area and think it might be just an ingrown hair, yeast infection or even fissures around the anus, you might want to stop and consider the possibility of herpes. Perhaps you’ve seen a smaller sore develop on your lip. How can you tell if it’s herpes or not? Some symptoms look exactly like other diseases so it’s usually very hard to tell.

Oral and genital herpes are viruses grouped with several other similar viruses. This group includes the viruses that cause chicken pox and shingles. Also included is a virus known as Epstein-Barr. By far when people refer to herpes they are usually talking about the oral or genital type.

There are two types of herpes. Oral herpes, often referred to as cold sores or fever blisters, are around or on the area of the mouth. This is Herpes Simplex type 1. Genital herpes, or Herpes Simplex type 2 shows up on the vaginal area, anus, upper thighs, buttocks, cervix and areas where there was broken skin during contact. Carriers sometimes don’t show symptoms yet they have the ability to pass the virus on to others.

Oral herpes normally begins with small blisters forming on the face but can occur on broken skin. It occurs most often on the lips. Occasionally they are close to the nose or even in the nose. These blisters contain clear fluid. They are quite painful and lead to a crusty sore that lasts seven to twelve days. The good news is that there is complications medically speaking but, the personally speaking the blisters are embarrassing and very unsightly.

The first symptom of genital herpes often comes between 2 and 20 days after you’ve had contact with someone carrying the herpes virus. If you’ve had facial herpes, then genital herpes takes longer to show up. You might notice an area where tingling or small red bumps or open lesions begin to appear. This occurs at the site of infection and normally begins anywhere from two to ten days after you are exposed.

That first outbreak of herpes is by far the worst, while subsequent embarrassing outbreaks tend not to be as bad. This is because your body lacks the antibodies to fight the viral infection. You’ll notice little bumps occurring on the skin. They are liquid filled and either painful, itchy or tingly. These blisters often burst and ooze out a clear liquid that forms a crust. You might have one blister or several clusters. After several days, the blisters clear and the outbreak is over.

Some people experience other symptoms besides the blisters. They may show signs of swollen lymph glands, have a headache, develop a fever, have muscle aches, vaginal discharge or discharge from the male organ, have burning urination or pain in the lower back, besides the burning or itching sensation in the genitals. Outbreaks may occur later at different sites since the virus travels the nerve ganglia

There is a great deal of controversy over whether you can cure herpes. The majority of the medical doctors don,t believe there is a cure for herpes just a way to mask the symptoms. Other research, however, shows conflicting evidence. It indicates that there are natural cures for herpes that actually kill the virus and leaves the individual symptom-free.

Viral Infection Remedy That Really Works

Viral Infection Remedy That Really Works

Viruses are extremely tiny- much smaller than bacteria. They invade individual cells and turn them into tiny factories to make more viruses. The pharmaceutical community has developed antibiotic after antibiotic to target an ever-growing group of bacterial pathogen, yet few medicines today work on viral infections. Health-care practitioners have little ammunition when it comes to viruses.

Viral diseases include colds and flu, chicken pox, hepatitis, measles, herpes, viral pneumonia, shingles, Epstein Barr virus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), AIDS, and numerous others. That are also a host of intestinal viruses that cause diarrhea and other life-threatening symptoms. Viruses cause serious health difficulties each year.

In my opinion, aiding the good guys- experts call it enhancing host resistance- is the way to go. I think it’s a crying shame that natural supplements and other immune system boosting herbs aren’t more widely used. Instead, doctors keep writing prescriptions for antibiotics, which gradually breed stronger, more virulent germs that require stronger, and always more expensive, antibiotics.

Generally speaking, pharmaceuticals have just one active ingredient with which to fend off an infectious invader. That’s like going into battle with one bullet in your rifle. What’s great about natural supplement is that each one contains many, even hundreds, of biologically active compounds, some in dose ranges that might provide real benefit to us humans. Natural supplements give your body an entire arsenal from which to select the weapons it needs.

In the last few years, colostrum and a number of its individual components have been seriously studied for their effects against a variety of viral diseases. As with the bacteria pathogens, colostrum’s ability to help with viral infections is more likely due to immune support and the combination of substances than to any specific antibody reaction.

Colostrum anti-viral properties include:

-Lactoferrin, an iron binding protein with antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. It is currently being studied for its effects against the HIV virus, herpes, and even cancer.

– Cytokines, which regulate the intensity of the immune response. They are known to boost the production of antibodies important in fighting viral infections.

– Leukocytes, the white blood cells that engulf invading organisms, including viruses.

– Proline Rich polypeptide, is a small protein chain in colostrum with the same ability to regulate the immune system as the hormones of they thymus gland, as reported by a 1979 study published in Immunology.

Proline Rich poly peptide helps regulate the immune system to maintain balance between under and over-activity- extremely important for those with autoimmune disease. It is also a very powerful anti-inflammatory agent, which may help relieve painful flair-ups. Proline-Rich polypeptide also stimulates the body’s immune cells to produce cytokines: immune- regulating proteins that regulate the duration and intensity of the body’s immune response.

In a 1998 study conducted at the laboratory of Virology, Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy, Polish Academy of Sciences, Wroclaw, Poland, it was shown that when praline rich polypeptide isolated from bovine colostrums was added to the immune cells found in the membrane lining the abdominal cavity and viscera immediately after virus absorption or one day before or after viral infection, infected cells were better able to inhibit virus replication.

Proline rich polypeptide is one of the key component that virologists all over the world are researching on in the battle against the ever growing virus threat.

I have no doubt that colostrum is effective against many types of viruses, as these studies show. Notice that researchers are not saying that colostrum immune factors and other components are effective against every type of virus. But they help a great deal on several significant diseases.

If you are suffering from viral infection such as herpes viral infection on your skin, apply colostrum powder and some water to the infected skin area 3 times a day. The part of the skin will become dry and will heal much faster than other methods.

The Big Three In Electronic Medical Record System Shopping

The Big Three In Electronic Medical Record System Shopping

Big Healthcare has known about the advantages of an electronic medical record system for quite a long time. In fact, large hospitals and HMOs were the early adopters of these systems, some stretching back to the not-so-good old days of the 1990s, when led screens and arduous UNIX interfaces were all the rage. Yes, collecting and digitizing patient records has been an important part of managing large healthcare organizations for quite a long time, and has provided ROI well beyond the expense of the original systems.

The single doctor and small practice, meanwhile, was noticeably absent when it came to electronic medical record system adoption. The early phase of EMR software was skipped by a great deal of small practitioners, and this did not differ until 2004. Suddenly, Windows PCs and cheap computers made EMR systems far more appealing to the single physician, and early adopters began to surface.

Cue the 2009-2010 Federal Stimulus program, and suddenly there is a budget for every doctor to jump aboard the EMR software train. As a result, the EMR development industry has virtually exploded as doctors rush to claim their stimulus dollars (try saying “free government payments” at any Chamber of Commerce meeting, and watch the ears prick up). Of course, it isn’t as simple as just picking a vendor and watching the dollars roll in. There are a lot of things a good electronic medical record system should be. Here are just a few examples:

1. Keep It Simple – Installing and using an entire new system that will completely change your office’s workflow is not easy. So shouldn’t the EMR system itself be easy to use? Avoiding products with gawky or tough interfaces is the most critical way to save adoption, training and support costs for every physician. Stated simply, the easier the application is to use on a daily basis, the more efficient it is, the easier it is to train staff, and the fewer times a call to support must be made. Keep it simple from the beginning, and you’ll save yourself a lot of stress.

2. Run On Simple Hardware – Looking for a Sun Solaris system with single color monitor and specialized language interface? We don’t know why you would be. Today, any electronic medical record system with any kind of installation base simply must be Windows oriented. It helps with the learning process, as Windows programs tend to have common interfaces, but it’s also key because of the hardware. Basically, Windows computers are inexpensive. So if one goes down, 0-500 will get you a pretty great machine. EMR systems that run on “specialized hardware” are a bad idea. Avoid them like the plague.

3. CCHIT-Certified – Question: what happens when the government offers a certain subgroup of the software industry a big subsidy? Answer: every IT guy with a shingle and a vehicle becomes a part of that subgroup. Everyone “becomes” an expert seemingly overnight. This is exactly what has happened to the electronic medical record software industry. Which is why, thankfully, experienced vendors, teaming up with real doctors, have teamed-up to create set of standards aimed at leaving the bandwagon jumpers behind. It’s called CCHIT. And it ensures that you aren’t getting taken for a ride by a slightly dubious vendor. It takes an advanced EMR software application to qualify for CCHIT status, so ensuring your electronic medical record system is approved will save you a lot of headaches, both short and long term.

Naturally, there are many other considerations to make when looking at the right EMR product. The three above, however, will provide you with the best start, and a good possibility you choose the best electronic medical record system out there today.

Medical Billing Home Business: What It Really Takes

Medical Billing Home Business: What It Really Takes

If you’d like to work at home but don’t quite know what to do, consider starting a medical billing home business. This can be a rewarding career, although it’s going to take work, patience, and perseverance. Beware of scams that tell you that you can simply do this without having to work. In other words, you’re going to have to do more than “simply sit back and collect the payments!” As with any other kind of business it’s going to take some dedication, perseverance, and a sense of responsibility.

First things first

You’ll need to learn about medical billing and all that entails. Many technical colleges, for example, offer certification programs. The American Academy of Professional Coders, for example, offers a state-by-state listing of courses offered that you can take advantage of.

What you’ll need to get certified

In addition to a certification course, there are several other absolute necessities if you want to be good and in demand. In general, you’ll need a high school diploma or GED, and you’ll need to be able to pass a background check. You’ll also need to be able to demonstrate your command of English, particularly important because medical billing requires a very good command of the English language. Some courses, for example, will require you to complete an English composition test that is on the level of what you might do as a college freshman. If you’ve already got a bachelors or associates degree, you may be able to have some courses credited without having to retake them.

In your coursework, you’ll study human anatomy, the fundamentals of health care delivery, and current procedural medical terminology coding. Additionally you’ll study professional practice and health record documentation for health care professionals, and medical claims processing.

Professional organizations to join

As a medical billing professional, it’s a good idea to join the American Medical Billing Association. The AMBA provides sources to look for work, provides online training, hosts a national conference, and — most importantly — offers a business start-up program for those who want to begin their own home businesses. If you’re interested in a career, have taken the coursework and have become certified, post your resume and create job alerts through their Web site.

The American Academy of Professional Coders is also a good organization to join, with ongoing seminars, opportunities to network with other professionals, and a job board for those looking for employment.

Getting your resume ready

Once you’ve completed your coursework, put together a resume with your certification highlighted, as well as any other coursework, coding experience, or professional affiliations you have. Make sure you don’t have any typos; this is VERY important, since medical billing professionals have to be very meticulous about their typing and language skills.

After this, contact local doctors’ offices, clinics, and other health care practices to tell them that you have received your certification in medical billing and are looking for work. You can also peruse job boards online, both for local and for long-distance work. For more ideas on finding business, review my webpage on medical billing employment.

It’s a good idea in many cases to get at least some experience in an office setting as a medical billing professional before you hang out your own shingle. You’ll learn the business first-hand, after which you can go into business for yourself.

Pain Management for Shingles Infection – Natural Remedy vs. Medication

Pain Management for Shingles Infection – Natural Remedy vs. Medication

Article by Jared Wright

Shingles is one of the most annoying viral infections to catch as it is highly painful for most people. Anti-Virals are commonly prescribed by doctors as they help to ease pain and fast recovery. Corticosteroids, an anti-inflammatory medication that helps to reduce pain is another common prescription. However, you should note that anti-inflammatory is not recommended for people with weak immune system.

Corticosteroids can be risky for a person with a weak immune system or for the elderly. With natural remedies, however, there is no fear of side-effects and there are no risks involved. In fact, fresh fruits and vegetables and a diet rich in vitamins can give a natural boost to your immune system and is generally a major part of a natural treatment for shingles.

To combat pain, there is a range of medications available today. Some common over-the-counter options include ibuprofen and aspirin. Doctors may also prescribe anti-depressants and anticonvulsants, topical medicines or antibiotics, anti- inflammatory drugs, opioid painkillers, nerve block injections. These options are especially useful when the pain does not go away even after the rashes have. This condition is known as post-herpetic neuralgia and requires stronger medication.

The dark side of these medications includes side-effects. Nausea, dizziness, constipation are one of the many side-effects experienced by patients. Topical lotions and antibiotic ointments can irritate the skin in some cases and might lead to further burning and itching.

Another strong point against the mentioned medications is that they might not fully cure shingles and provide long term pain relief solutions. A study conducted at John Hopkins Medical School reveals that just 32% of patients suffering from shingles get pain relief from the use of anti-depressants, and 30% of them are benefited from opioids.

Natural, non-medicated treatment, on the other hand, does not pose any threat to patients, and can work wonders. Ice packs provide temporary relief to itching and pain, whereas natural remedies like herbs and oils not only provide pain relief, but also keep the rashes dry and keep the infection to the minimum. To heal shingles, you need to keep the rashes dry and they will soon disappear.

Oatmeal and clay are very good drying agents and are the appropriate natural remedy for shingles. You can also try massaging with eucalyptus oil as it helps to reduce the burning sensation, itch and pain. Another pain reliever is aloe vera, which when mixed with coconut oil and cayenne pepper, can accelerate the healing process. Natural remedies, unlike doctors prescribed medications, can be used by any patient regardless of age.

Natural remedies are a boon for those who are not benefited from medications. There are also times when prescribed medications do not seems to work at all for certain patients. At this time, natural treatment remedies will serve as the best alternative treatment options.

Hence, it is ultimately upon the person to decide which course to take. Both natural remedies and medication have their own pros and cons. Depending on the seriousness of your shingles infection, you can choose to use natural remedies to stop the pain and even cure the infection completely.

You can always continue prescribed medicines and couple them with natural remedies after consulting your doctor. It is good to bear in mind that natural remedies or prescribed medication might not be suitable for all. You must see what works out best for you. The choice, after all, is all yours.

Get to know About The Skin Ailment Psoriasis

Get to know About The Skin Ailment Psoriasis

Article by Chris Stephen

Psoriasis is a skin condition that affects approximately 3.8% of the population and can cause horrible distress. Occasionally the situation may be quite dangerous where you may require hospitalization to manage it.

Sadly we are still incapable to uncover the root cause for this disease, although it is well acknowledged that there is an underlying genetic factor which, when triggered, will cause the immune system to produce an excessive number of skin cells. Hence it has been termed an auto-immune skin disorder. At present there is no remedy.

Scientists deem that a minimum of10 percent of the people inherits one or more of the genes that produce a tendency to psoriasis. This specific skin sickness seems to influence only 2-3% of the population. Researchers deem that for a person to pick up psoriasis, the person must have a grouping of the genes that initiate psoriasis and be subjected to certain exterior factors called triggers.

Persons with psoriasis are at an elevated chance to develop other chronic and severe health conditions called”comorbid diseases” or “comorbidities.” These take account of heart ailment, inflammatory bowel disease and diabetes. People with more serious cases of psoriasis have an increased incidence of psoriatic arthritis, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, cancer, depression, obesity, and other immune-associated conditions like Crohn’s disease1.

You have main kinds of psoriasis: plaque, guttate, inverse, pustular and erythrodermic. The commonest type, plaque psoriasis, appears as raised, red patches or lesions enclosed with a silvery white buildup of dead skin cells, called scale. Psoriasis can occur on any region of the body and is connected with other serious health conditions, like diabetes, heart disease and depression. The psoriasis problem is provoked by four varieties of primary triggers. They take in:

Koebner Phenomenon – injuries or trauma to the skin i.e. operations, Insect bites, cuts, abrasions etc;Systemic Infections – Tonsil inflammations, Shingles and some viral and bacterial infections;Drug Interaction – Intake or cessation of certain drugs like steroids, lithium, anti malarials, anti-inflamatories, some hypertension drugs (Beta Blockers) and antibiotics; andStress – Anxiety and worry. You will find quite a few secondary triggers which are related to the lifestyle, food habits and environmental exposure and these play a role in the continued exacerbation of the condition.

Points About Psoriasis

“Psoriasis impacts both males and females.

“The word psoriasis arrives from a Greek term that means “to itch.” On the other hand, psoriasis often won’t itch.

“Psoriasis normally looks as thick, flaky patches of skin that might be silver or red.

“In psoriasis, skin cells duplicate many times faster than usual and survive only three to four days. The dead cells accumulate on the skin, forming thick, flaky patches.

“Psoriasis can come about at any age but is most frequent in people in their 20s, 30s, and 40s.

“In the United States alone, roughly two or three out of every 100 people have psoriasis.

“Psoriasis is not an illness and it is not transmittable-you cannot “catch” it from any person.

“In roughly one-third of cases, psoriasis is inherited. In case both of a child’s parents possess psoriasis, the child’s probability of acquiring the disease are nearly 50-50.

“Skin damage, climate alteration, infection, drug reactions, and stress can all bring about psoriasis to flare up or worsen.

“Strep throat can bring about a kind of psoriasis named guttate psoriasis, which is most widespread in small kids and young adults.

“About one in 10 people with psoriasis will take on a type of arthritis called psoriatic arthritis.

How to Prevent Shingles – Medicare and Vaccination Guide

How to Prevent Shingles – Medicare and Vaccination Guide

Article by Barb Hicks – Clivir Team

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, so goes the old saying. Presently, Medicare Part B covers the flu, pneumococcal, and hepatitis B vaccines. Medicare does not, however, cover the shingles vaccination, but there is a good possibility this may change in the future.

At the moment, one in three persons will develop shingles. The good news is you can lower your risk for getting this disease with the Zostavax vaccine that was approved for shingles in 2006. It is recommended for those who are 60 years of age and up as a method of protection from the symptoms and complications of this disease.

Shingles, or Herpes zoster, is caused by the same virus (varicella zoster, VZV) that causes chickenpox. It is marked by pain, red rash, and fluid filled blisters. The virus is never leaves the body. it stays hidden and dormant in the nerve fibers of the body until some assault on the immune system reactivates it. Getting vaccinated with Zostavax, a chickenpox booster, can help prevent this painful event from intruding on your life. The vaccine is also effective in reducing the risks and complications of posterherpetic neuralgia.

How much does it cost?

Merck, the manufacturer of zostavax, is charging around 0 per injection. Hospitals and doctors are charging about 0. This cost may be out of reach for those who do not have medical coverage, or can not otherwise afford it.

Shingles occurs only in people who have had a prior case of chickenpox. Shingles can not be passed on to someone else as shingles. However, the virus can be passed to another via person to person contact, but if that person never had chickenpox, they are not immune for getting it. If you have never had varicella, it would be in your best interest to stay away from someone who is currently having an active infection, that is unless you want chickenpox.

Who gets the vaccine?

Zostavax is approved for seniors, but is contraindicated for some people due to other chronic illness that may be present, such as:

HIV/AIDSAny immune disturbancePeople who have had chemotherapy treatment for cancerHistory of cancerIf you are currently suffering from any illnessif you are on steroids or anti-rejection drugsIf you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant

If you are planning to get this vaccine, avoid pregnancy for at least three months after having the injection. The vaccine carries very little risk, however there is always the chance of having a reaction, particularly if you have an allergy to gelatin. Check with your health care provider to see if this vaccine will benefit you.

If you are having a lot of stress in your life, which is a risk factor for getting shingles, stress management is important to reduce your risk. You can try yoga, imagery, meditation, and biofeedback, as well as many other modalities that help to reduce stress.

Whether you have Medicare or some other private insurance, check your policy or give your agent a call to see if your Zostavax vaccine is covered.

What Does Shingles Look Like

What Does Shingles Look Like

Awareness about shingles and knowledge about what does shingles look like are important for every person. The reason is that the disease is quite common. Since it is a viral infection, many people are affected by it and knowledge about the disease will help in treating it early.

In spite of suffering from this disease, they delay their treatment mainly because they are not sure of the disease that they are suffering from. Shingles need to be identified by all those who suffer from the disease.

The first thing that one has to know about the disease is the fact that the skin has rashes on it. Since the disease is caused by a virus, the person who is suffering from shingles will have associated pain, fatigue and general body pain. This should be the main criteria for diagnosis of the disease too.

Other than the signs that have been mentioned above, the person who suffers from shingles will have blisters forming on the skin. Blisters seem to be present in the same area. This is a major factor that will help a person to identify if the blister and rashes on the skin are that of shingles. There is one more condition that can have signs and symptoms very similar to that of the ones seen in shingles. It is nothing other than chicken pox, where the affected person will suffer from both blisters and rashes. Blisters in shingles are all together, whereas the blisters seen in a person with chicken pox are spread apart.

Other criteria can also be used to find the presence of shingles. The clusters that form as a result of the viral infection will start crusting over. This occurs when the blisters break. As the blisters break, there will be some fluid oozing out of the blisters. Shingles will cause blisters to form and they are present for at least thirty days. The blisters that are formed because of the chicken pox will stay for about a week or a little more than that.

Itching in the affected spots are present because of the blisters and rashes. So, any person who has rashes and blisters that are itching and is red in color can identify the presence of shingles. Since these blisters are all seen in clusters, it is easy to differentiate shingles from other diseases that have similar signs and symptoms and are caused by various other kinds of viruses. It is important to know how shingles will present themselves as it will help in identification and disease treatment.

Alan Chan has a lot of information about what does shingles look like. He is also an expert with a lot of medical questions.
