Home Remedies ? Helps to Treat Skin Rashes

Home Remedies ? Helps to Treat Skin Rashes

Again, there are some common skin irritations that are caused due to allergic reactions to certain foods, chemical pollutants, cosmetics, detergents, perfumes, plants and a lot more things. Parasites like lice and mice also cause skin eruptions and rashes. Insect bites also cause rashes. Rashes are also caused due to diseases like measles, chicken pox, shingles, hand and foot diseases, etc. as also after bacterial, fungal and viral infections. One may also have skin rash from excessive exposure to heat and sun.

Body rash is an inflammation on the surface of the skin. Due to this, the skin color and texture changes. It is often associated with itching, stinging or a burning sensation. This sudden outbreak of rashes could be due to a new cosmetic cream, allergic food reaction or an irritation. Allergies can be caused by food, plants, animals, insects or any chemicals.

Try Bag Balm. The rash was gone after 3 days and never came back. It is now sold in the salve section in many stores, so word must have gotten out about this great salve. It is a great salve, with many uses and I always will keep a tin of it handy.

Creams, lotions and antibiotic courses are some essential treatment options, which can effectively eliminate conditions of acute skin rashes. Nowadays, you also have skin rash vaccines that uproot the very causes of rashes. Basic knowledge of medicines, tips from the doctor and a handy first aid kit are some essential resources, which will prevent a mild skin rash from becoming a real menace.

Give Fido a bath. The rash caused by poison ivy can spread if there are oils from the plant on your pet’s fur, or even on other items around the yard such as gardening tools. “Oil can stay on these types of surfaces for up to 5 years,” says Hammer. She recommends thoroughly washing both pets and other items that may have come into contact with poison ivy to remove the oils.

You need to take a proper bowel cleanse. A good bowel cleanse will reduce the toxic loads in your body. And if your bowel cleanse is sulfur rich, which contains loads of compounds, compounds that you could find in cabbages and onions and garlic, it will be extremely cleansing for you.

Avoid petroleum-based products, baby oils, and scented talcum powder. Never wash the affected areas with soap of any kind. Avoid detergent washing powders and fabric softeners. Homeopathy Apis, Graphites, Pulsatilla, Rhus tox, and Sulfur may be helpful. Herbal Medicine Marigold tea, calendula ointment, or aloes Vera gel are all helpful. Aromatherapy Add 12 drops of fennel, geranium, or sandalwood to 2fl oz/60ml of carrier oil.

Wash the area. “If you come into contact with poison ivy, the best advice is to wash your skin as quickly as possible with soap and cold, running water,” says Hammer. Do this within minutes of coming into contact with the plant to prevent the oil from absorbing into the skin. Also, avoid vigorously scrubbing the area or using hot water since these may further open pores or cause more irritation to the skin.

What are the Remedies for Frizzy Hair?

What are the Remedies for Frizzy Hair?

It seems like such as enigma this question of frizzy hair. Hope this article covers some of the main reasons as to why many of us suffer with the affliction better known as THE FRIZZIES! But most of all it has to do with a moisture deficiency!

Oil and Water…
90% of us suffer with dry brittle or frizzy hair because our hair is deficient of (moisture) WATER! There is a certain preconceived notion that has been passed on from generation to generation. That is the idea that our hair is dry, because we are lacking in natural oils. We are told that if we nurture our hair by brushing vigorously 100 times a day, with an all-natural bristle brush, or if we pamper our hair with hot oil treatments or smother out hair with cholesterols. If we do all of these things, then we are sure to be blessed with beautiful, shiny and healthy locks. This might be the case, if you have young virgin (hair that is not chemically treated) hair. But this is certainly not the case, once you have impaled your tresses, with harsh chemicals such as bleaches and alkaline permanents. Or if you have naturally curly hair,
Naturally Curly Hair…

Those of us with curly hair, YES! I too have curly hair; have these curls, because of a curvature of the hair follicles .A normal hair follicle under a microscope would be seen as perfectly straight. However we have a definite bend in ours. This causes us to have natural curls. When the hair curves it compels the cuticle (the outer layer of the hair) to lift.

The cuticle…
Under a microscope, A cuticle is similar in appearance to shingles on a roof. When the hair is in good conditioner and has good porosity the tiles or cuticle layers are tight together and perfect in shape. When hair is in bad conditioner or has poor porosity, the cuticle layers are lifted and sometimes damaged and broken.
When the cuticle layers are in good health, the hair has a smooth appearance, and because the layers of the cuticle are so tightly knit together, the light is able to reflect off the cuticle. This is what makes hair shine!
When the cuticle layers are not tight together, the hair will feel coarse and brittle. The hair will then absorb the light and not reflect. This will give a surface appearance of dull and lifeless hair.
To sum up this scenario. Because curly haired cuticle layer is permanently lifted, it feels, coarse, and brittle and has no brilliance. Hence the dull, lifeless look. It also means that our hair has poor porosity.

Porosity…
Is the ability for hair to be able to absorb and retain moisture. The best way for me to explain this is to would be for you to imagine a sponge. First of all imagine a brand new sponge. It will have tiny holes in it, and when you immerse it in water, it will soak up a large quantity, and be able to hold that liquid for a long period of time. This is because it has good porosity. Now imagine an old sponge. Its holes have become damaged and distorted. It might even be torn in some areas. When you immerse this sponge in the same amount of liquid, it will absorb far less and will certainly not be able to retain the moisture so readily.
It is the same with hair. Hair that has poor porosity will not be able to absorb or retain moisture as well as hair that has good porosity. Making hair permanently dry.

Hot oil treatments…
Traditions have taught many of us that lavishly applying oil to our hair will give us the soft, shiny hair that we all desire. However more often than not, the opposite takes place. Most oils if they are not essential oils do not have the ability to penetrate into the hair shaft. Nor do heavy cholesterols. What they will do, is to lay on top of the cuticle, and coat the cuticle. This may give the hair some Brilliance. However, it will also coat the hair. And causes product build up

Product build up…
Once the hair is coated, your problems will commence. First of all, the moisture that our hair so desperately needs will not be able to permeate through the wall of product build. The moisture is then not able to find it’s way underneath the cuticle layer. The hair cannot then be conditioned. Also the oils will not diffuse. If you use any kind of hot styling tools such as blow dryers or hot irons, what will happen to your hair, is exactly what happens when you put an egg into a hot pan. It will fry.
If you live in a sunny climate, the oil will do the same thing. The sun will heat the oil and fry your hair. You must have heard the term,” my hair feels fried”.

Optimum condition…
For hair to be in tiptop conditioner is has to have a moisture (water) content of at least 8%, and the right balance of protein and natural oil. Most of us produce enough natural oil (sebum), to keep our hair healthy, but lack the moisture.
What to do…

You need to give your hair lots of TLC, with product that are designed to restore your hair’s moisture level to its optimum 8%. Look for shampoos that contain natural humectants (magnet like properties to attract moisture), that will work together will your natural oils, to restore your hair’s moisture level to its optimum 8%. Treatment conditioners that contain proteins will repair damaged cuticles, improve porosity, elasticity and general health and appearance of your hair.

Those of us with naturally curly, wavy or frizzy hair, or those of us who chemically treat our hair, will need to give our hair extra nurturing by supplying our hair with the necessary nutrition and moisture that it needs. Chemical treatments (i.e. perms, hair dyes or bleaches.), will deplete the hair of moisture. bringing the hair moisture level own to as low as 2%. When this occurs you will start to notice split ends. If these are not repaired forthwith and the moisture level not restored to 8%, Your split ends will turn to breakage. This obviously needs to be avoided at all costs. Those of us who live in hot, sunny or arid climates; need to make sure that our hair care product contain sunscreens to protect our hair from the damaging affects of the UV rays. If not the same thing will happen as to those of use that use chemicals on our hair.

Summary… Our hair needs MOISTURE, MOISTURE, and MOISTURE! Who needs to add moisture more than most? People with naturally curly hair, chemically treated hair or people who live in hot sunny climates.

Remedial Work On Houses Takes Experts To Complete

Remedial Work On Houses Takes Experts To Complete

When winter or summer is rolling around once again, it may be time to check into getting heaters and coolers checked out to make sure everything is working at optimum level. Indeed, when a cold snap occurs, this is usually the time that panic sets in if the heating system is not working properly. To see which companies can fix this kind of product, check out ‘heat pump repair’ or ‘duct cleaning’ to get some idea of what is available in the area.

The problem with having a hot spell or cold snap is immediately people rush for the air conditioner or heating system only to find that it does not work. The next step is they try to find a contractor who will come out and get it fixed immediately but this is not always possible of course. If there is one household which has not taken care of its equipment, it is a sure bet that many others in the same area have also fallen behind on this important job. Hence, the lack of available experts until everyone else that was booked previously gets their work done first.

Most companies are sympathetic of course and will try to fit in all their clients as soon as they can. However, regulars or those who have a long-standing contract will always get priority over those who have not booked previously.

When dealing with this kind of equipment it is best not to rely on chance and it may be good to try out the systems now and then to make sure everything is working correctly. Pipes can be cleaned out by the householder long before the equipment is needed and this is also a good time to see if any spare parts need replacing too. It is obvious that things can go wrong unexpectedly but organizing a regular check up with great contractors would seem the easiest way to avoid trouble.

But these one stop shop companies have so much more on offer than cleaning and remedial work. They also undertake all kinds of work on the home which the householder may not be aware of. Roofing and gables take the brunt of the weather so it could be a good thing to have a close inspection of this area once a year.

Even beams that hold up roofs can be damaged by termites or other pests and leaking water will also make them rot. This may just be a loose shingle or two but the damage that water can cause is terrible to say the least. Dry rot and wet rot are fungal growths which make the beams unsafe and the damage can spread along the beams to infect the rest of the house if care is not taken.

Finally, whatever the work is that needs to be done, finding one company which takes care of all the organizing is a great way to ensure that it not only gets done on schedule, but that it also costs less and takes up less time to boot.

Stewart Wrighter recently had a Dayton Heat Pump Repair at his office building. He scheduled to have Dayton Duct Cleaning in his home.

Causes and Home Remedies for Jaw Pain Treatment

Causes and Home Remedies for Jaw Pain Treatment

Jaw pain can be caused by a wide variety of medical problems, many of which can be quickly addressed by a visit to the doctor or dentist. People should definitely seek medical attention for jaw pain, because there is no reason to suffer with a painful jaw, and because some conditions can grow much worse if they are not addressed. A dentist is often a good person to start with, as the dentist can provide a referral to another doctor if a dental exam rules out obvious potential causes of jaw pain.

What Causes Jaw Pain?

When an individual goes to the doctor for treating jaw pain, he will prescribe some painkillers to subside the pain. The dentist will check for primary causes of jaw pain and if he finds none, he will recommend the patient to a specialist who can find out the exact cause of jaw pain.

Primary Jaw Pain Causes

One of the main causes of jaw pain is injury or inflammation on the joint of the jaw which is known as temporomandibular joint disorders. The jaw joints lie just in front of the ears, on both sides of the head where the upper and lower jaw come together. These joints with the help of muscles and ligaments surrounding it, make us unable to make movements with our mouth like talking, chewing, yawning, etc. When an injury occurs to these joints, jaw pain is said to occur along with other symptoms like headache, earache, neck pain, etc.

Secondary Jaw Pain Causes

The secondary causes of jaw pain are those that do not have any relation to the jaws, and are triggered due to problem in some other area of the body. In some of these cases, jaw pain may appear as the symptom for the main problem. Migraine is one such disease where the person, along with a severe headache, may also experience pain in the joints. The main reason is said that when the individual has headache, he is likely to grind his teeth with force, giving rise to jaw pain as well. Even people who have sinus infection can experience the problem of jaw pain. Shingles, which is a viral infection, can be the cause of jaw pain, while pain in the jaw can also be a symptom of an impending heart attack.

The following natural remedies can be tried at home for pain relief:

A sore jaw should be treated as a sore body part. Try giving the jaw some rest.

Then apply cold compress to the jaw for around 20 min.# If the soreness still exists after two days then try the heat pack. The methodology remains the same as prescribe for the cold pack i.e. applying it for 20 mins. and replying it again when soreness persists

Avoid eating anything that is hard, limit your diet to only soft foods like boiled veggies and cheese. You also go for fruit juices as they do not need munching at all.

Find powerful herbal remedies Dental Plaques

Avoid caffeine and coffee loaded beverages at they are known for making the nervous system more sensitive to pain

Take Vitamin C supplements

Meditation is also a great technique to ease the pain

Also performing those activities, which are pleasurable like listening to soothing music or taking a warm water bath, will help relax your facial muscles thus reducing the chances of clenching your teeth while sleeping

You can also take a slice of potato and place it on the abscess for a couple of hours. This will reduce the swelling

Above all a visit to the dentist is always recommended

Should I Get The Shingles Vaccine?

Should I Get The Shingles Vaccine?

Shingles is the common term for a painful viral flare-up of the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chicken pox. It can appear at any age but is more common in adults over age 60. Anyone who has had chicken pox is at risk for shingles. The varicella-zoster virus doesn’t leave the body when you recover from chicken pox, but merely goes dormant. Emotional or physical stress, or a weakening of the immune system can lead to a bout of shingles.

Shingles most commonly appears as a painful red rash which often blisters. A patient will experience tingling or nerve pain for several days before the rash appears. Shingles often appears on just one side of the body. The nerve pain associated with shingles can continue for a long time after the rash heals, up to a month or even longer.

For people who have severe and ongoing nerve pain, shingles can be a truly debilitating disease. Shingles is also contagious. If shingles is transmitted to someone who has not yet had chicken pox, that person can develop chicken pox. If they previously had chicken pox, they can also develop shingles.

Fortunately in recent years a vaccination has become available, and the CDC recommends it for all adults over sixty, although some doctors will administer it as early as age 50 to head off attacks. The vaccination is a weakened strain of the virus and is injected into the upper arm. For most people, side effects are minimal, merely a redness and itching of the vaccination site.Because the vaccine is new, it is not yet known how long it provides protection. And it doesn’t provide complete protection; it’s still possible to get shingles but shingles attacks in people who have been vaccinated are usually briefer and much less severe.

So should you get the shingles vaccine? If you are over 60, the short answer is yes. For most people the vaccine is completely safe, and shingles has the potential to seriously disrupt your life in the short term and even in the long term. However, a few people should avoid the vaccine.

You should not get the shingles vaccine if:

You are allergic to gelatin, the antibiotic neomycin or any of the substances in the vaccine
You have a weakened immune system from HIV or other diseases that attack the immune system; cancer treatments, or treatment with immunosuppressive drugs such as steroids.
You have a history of cancer affecting the bone marrow or lymph system such as lymphoma or leukemia
You currently have active tuberculosis
You are pregnant

The shingles vaccine is usually covered under Medicare Part D plans, and some commercial health insurance providers also cover the vaccine. Check with your particular insurer to confirm coverage.

Home Remedies for Eye Problems

Home Remedies for Eye Problems

Severe problems with eyes should always be referred to a specialist, but alternative therapies can support orthodox treatment and may be very useful in conditions that affect the eyelids and tear glands. When treating infections and inflammations of the eyes, wash your hands between treating each eye, and use fresh materials so that you do not transfer infection from eye to eye.

There is a family of viruses that are all called herpes virus. Two of these viruses can cause infections in the eye, which is called herpetic eye disease. These two viruses are not the same virus that causes genital herpes, and herpetic eye disease is not a sexually transmitted disease.

One virus that causes herpetic eye disease is called the vermicelli-zoster virus. It is the same virus that causes chickenpox and also the nervous-system disease known as “shingles.” When this virus affects the eye, it is called herpes zoster ophthalmicus.

The other virus that causes herpetic eye disease is called herpes simplex type 1. Herpes simplex type 1 is the same virus that causes cold sores on the lips and mouth. In the eye, it usually causes an infection of the cornea. This infection is called herpes simplex keratitis.

Prevention is the key

Working on a table with proper distance between object and eye.

Wearing protective glasses while welding, working at very high temperatures, with chemicals, in contact sports.

Wash eyes with lots of water, if any foreign body or chemical enters.

Never instill any ‘drops’ without doctor’s advice. Read labels on medicine bottles carefully. Always keep medicines in a separate cabinet, so no confusion can ever arise.

Apply ice or cold compress for a black eye. This decreases the bleeding and swelling.

Home Remedies for Eye Problems

Mix one part of rose water and one part of lime juice. Store in a bottle and use it as an Eye drop this is very useful home remedy for eye care.

Triphala is a good herbal eye tonic. Steep one tablespoonful of powder in an 8 ounce glass of water overnight. In the morning, strain the infusion through a clean cloth. The resultant tea is used to sprinkle over the eyes or used in an eye wash

Avoid Jams, cakes, pastries, white sugar, white bread, confectionery, tea, Coffee, meat, fish, and eggs play havoc with the digestion and the body and should therefore be avoided.

Medications: Medications which cause dilation of blood vessels cause dark circles under eyes. Dilated blood vessels allow more blood to flow through them and these blood vessels look prominent through under eye skin which is very thin.

Bathe your eye for 10 minutes several times a day with cotton wool that has been soaked in warm water. This can help the stye to come to a head and discharge any pus that may be forming inside.

A handful of acacia or guava leaves that have been warmed in water can be placed on a damp cloth. This is an excellent compress which will reduce the redness and swelling caused by eye styles.

Aloe leaves are known for their healing properties and these can also be used in herbal remedies for eye stye cures.

How to Treat Shingles Infection – Complications, Medications and Vaccinations

How to Treat Shingles Infection – Complications, Medications and Vaccinations

Article by Barb Hicks – Clivir Team

There is no argument that shingles is a painful ordeal to have to endure, particularly for the elderly who are the ones mostly frequented by this disease. Treatment for zoster is mainly palliative, but it is the antiviral meds that can help to interrupt the virus’s ability to replicate, which can lessen the severity and length of time the disease is active.

Medications for shingles are used to combat pain, shorten the duration of the disease, and decrease the risk of complications.

Complications:

Cellulitis: A bacterial skin infection that can spread to the blood or lymph nodes, which can be deadlyPostherpetic Neuralgia: A painful condition of the nerve fibers and skinEncephalitis: Inflammation of the brainHearing lossVisual problems that can be temporary or permanentFacial paralysisRamsay Hunt syndrome: Infection of the facial nerve with painful rash and facial muscle weakness

The active stage of shingles can prove to be a very painful and debilitating condition. The good news is there are medications to combat the affects that an outbreak can have on your life.

Medications:

Pain medications such as acetaminophen, aspirin, or ibuprofen, to decrease painAntiviral medications such as Acyclovir (Zovirax), Valacyclovir (Valtrex), and Famciclovir (Famvir)Corticosteroids such as methylprednisolone and prednisone taken orally or by injectionTopical antibiotics applied to the skin to prevent bacterial infection on open and leaking blisters

Drugs for Postherpetic Neuralgia:

Acetaminophen, aspirin, or ibuprofenAntidepressants, such as amitriptylineAnalgesicsTopical medications, such as a lidocaine patchAnticonvulsants, such as gabapentin or pregabalin (Lyrica)Corticosteroids, such as prednisoneNerve blockOpioids, such as codeine, oxycodone, and morphine

The Zostavax Vaccine:

Zostavax, a chickenpox booster vaccine, was licensed in 2006 for the prevention of herpes zoster. Clinical trials were conducted that thwarted the disease in approximately 50% of people 60 years old and up. Additionally, it significantly reduced the pain associated with this condition. However, this vaccine is contraindicated in people who have severe allergies, such as a reaction to gelatin and certain antibiotics such as neomycin.

Contraindications:

Immune system problems such as HIV/AIDSDrug treatments that affect the immune system such as steroids, radiation, or chemotherapyHistory of leukemia or lymphomaActive TBExpectant mothers

Women should avoid pregnancy for at least 12 weeks after having the Zostivax vaccine. Additionally, people who are experiencing any sickness should not be vaccinated until they have recovered, especially if there is a fever.

As with all medications there are some risks involved that you should familiarize yourself with.

Mild problems include: Redness, soreness, swelling, or itching at the injection site and headache.

Severe Reactions: Respiratory distress, hoarseness or wheezing, hives, paleness, weakness, rapid heart rate, and dizziness. These symptoms would manifest within a few hours of being vaccinated.

Contact your health care provider if you think a shingles infection is about to take place. Early and fast treatment can prevent serious complications.

Shingles Pain Management – Learning About the Various Types of Medication

Shingles Pain Management – Learning About the Various Types of Medication

Article by Barb Hicks – Clivir Team

Are you one of the millions of people suffering from the pain of a herpes zoster outbreak? Herpes zoster is the wrath of chickenpox, otherwise known as shingles, that affects millions of people in the US every year. Shingles is a painful red rash that turns into blisters that leak a clear fluid when the blister breaks open.

Shingles is caused by the same virus as chickenpox. The varicella zoster virus (VZV) stays dormant in the body after a chickenpox infection, that usually occurs in children. If your immune system becomes compromised later in life, this could result in reactivation of the virus, resulting in a painful case of shingles zoster.

How is the immune system compromised?

Prolonged stress, anti rejection medications, as well as HIV/AIDS and chemotherapy all can be an assault on the immune system causing the virus to come alive with a vengeance. The result is extreme pain and discomfort to the victim. It can start and burning and tingling on the skin that appears to come out of nowhere for no reason. VSV travels along the nerve route, or dermatome and shows up on one side of the body. This is one way that shingles is distinguished from varicella (shingles).

Discomfort due to herpes zoster can be debilitating, requiring pain medication and antivirals to manage the symptoms. Antivirals need to be taken within 72 hours of onset of symptoms. The pain can last up to six months, and in many cases is chronic lasting for years.

Dealing with the pain:

Discomfort due to herpes zoster can be debilitating, requiring pain medication and antivirals to manage the symptoms. In order for antivirals to have an effect, the drug should be taken within 72 hours of onset of the rash.

Medication Management:

Corticosteroids for pain: Prednisone taken together with acyclovir can reduce the pain of shingles by reducing the nerve inflammation caused by active infection. It has also been shown to decrease residual nerve damage.

Analgesics: Pain can range from mild to severe and relief may be obtained from over-the-counter analgesics when paid is mild to moderate, while narcotics may be needed for more severe pain symptoms.

Lotions such as calamine are effective when applied to the seeping blisters to combat pain, and capsaicin cream when the blisters have crusted over. Topical pain patches of lidocaine (Xylocaine) and nerve blocks have also been beneficial in easing the pain related to zoster outbreaks.

Herpes Zoster Keratitis (eye shingles) is a complication of herpes zoster, and is treated with antiviral medications. This serious complication can cause temporary or permanent vision loss, and needs medical treatment right away.

Another complication of zoster is Postherpetic Neuralgia, a painful condition known to occur after the blisters have healed. This pain is extreme nerve pain and can exist for up to and more than six months. Medications that are helpful for this condition include such as topical skin applications, analgesics, antidepressants, and anticonvulsants.

Herpes zoster is mostly seen in people 60 years of age and older, although children and young adults get as well. Having had a prior chickenpox infection make you vulnerable for developing shingles. However, if you have never had chickenpox before and have never been vaccinated against it, avoid people who have an active shingles infection, or you could find yourself with your first case of chickenpox!

Shingles and Organ Transplant

Shingles and Organ Transplant

Article by Mike Johns

A microorganism that cannot grow or reproduce apart or replicate from a living cell is called a virus. This microorganism has many types. It can be made from either DNA or RNA.

What is Herpes Zoster?

Herpes zoster, more commonly called shingles, is a viral skin infection caused by a member of a group of DNA viruses known as Varicella zoster virus, also called herpes zoster virus. This is the same etiologic agent for chickenpox. Shingles is characterized by an eruption of painful vesicles from one or more posterior ganglia along the area of distribution of the sensory nerves. There are two common terms of herpes zoster depending on the rashes’ distribution. Herpes zoster oticus involves the ear while herpes zoster ophthalmicus involves the orbit of the eye.

The Risk Factors

Shingles or herpes zoster will not exist without the presence of risk factors or contributing factors which can affect a person. These factors include previous history of chickenpox, an age of 50 years and above, and/or a weakened immune system caused by HIV/AIDS, cancer or cancer treatments. Examples of such treatment modalities for cancer are radiation and chemotherapy, prolonged use of steroids such as prednisone, and medications designed to prevent rejection of transplanted organs.

Organ transplant can contribute to the development of shingles. The main one at risk in an organ transplant from shingles is the organ transplant recipient or the one who receives the organ to be transplanted.

What is Organ Transplant?

Let us know more about organ transplant. It is a medical procedure which occurs by moving an organ or tissue from one body to another.

Types of Organ Transplant

This procedure has many types. Autograft is the transplantation of a tissue or an organ to the same person which means the donor and the recipient is the same. Allograft is the transplantation of a tissue or an organ between two of the same species but is not genetically identical. Isograft is the transplantation of a tissue or an organ between two the same species but is genetically identical such as an identical twin.

Xenograft is the transplantation of a tissue or an organ between one species to another. Split transplant, not usually a preferred option, is the transplantation of a tissue or an organ from a deceased donor that can be divided between two recipients.

Classification of the Body

An organ transplant is only done to the body’s replaceable parts. There are three classes of transplantable organs. Thoracic organs include the heart, lung, and heart. Abdominal organs consist of the kidney, liver, pancreas, intestine, and stomach. There are also other body parts used, such as the tissues, cell, and fluids like hand, cornea, skin, face, the islet of Langerhans, bone marrow or adult stem cell, blood transfusion or body parts transfusion, blood vessels, heart valve, and the bones.

Types of Donors

The organ transplantation that comes from a deceased donor will only be the heart, pancreas, stomach, hand, cornea, and blood vessels while the other organs mentioned above can be from both deceased or living donors. Deceased donors, formerly known as cadaveric donors, are those who have been declared brain dead but the organs are still useful. These organs are kept viable through ventilators or other mechanical mechanism until transplantation to a recipient is performed. Living donors are those alive who donate a replaceable tissue, cell, or fluid, or donates an organ or part of the organ that can still allow the donor to function despite the absence of the donated organ or part of an organ.

So what is the connection of organ transplant to shingles? The connection is actually pretty simple. In this medical procedure, organ rejection from the recipient is the anticipated problem and can be critical. When an organ is being transplanted to another species or to the organ recipient, the organ will be considered as a foreign body which can result to an organ transplant rejection or a failure of organ transplantation. For such reasons, medications are prescribed or administered to the recipient before the procedure so that the recipient’s body will not reject the transplant.

The medication administration continues until there are no signs and symptoms of organ transplant rejection that are observable. Immunosuppresant drugs are used for the organ recipient in order to prevent transplant rejection. However, such drugs can suppress his or her immune system. Once the recipient’s immune system is suppressed, it leads to a weak immune system, which, in turn, means any sort of infection that is caused by bacteria or a virus can penetrate the recipient’s body. Therefore, a weak immune system is indeed prone to acquire herpes zoster or shingles.

Shingles…Not Fatal…But Nasty!

Shingles…Not Fatal…But Nasty!

Article by Ira Marxe

Shingles…Not Fatal…But Nasty! Vaccine vs. PreventionA recent news article announced that the FDA has approved a shingles vaccine developed by Merck & Co. Inc. called Zostavax. In a statement by Dr. Jesse Goodman, director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, “This vaccine gives health care providers an important tool that can help prevent an illness that affects many older Americans and often results in significant chronic pain.”Continuing, Dr. Goodman said, “Zostavax does not prevent the initial infection by the virus nor does it treat active cases of shingles. Instead, the vaccine helps prevent the re-emergence or resurgence of the virus by boosting a patient’s immunity.” Health MattersMinutes ArticleJun 2, 2006Merck stated that their research showed the vaccine reduced the incidence of shingles by half, and pain and discomfort by two-thirds. This means that if you take the vaccine you only have a 50/50 chance the vaccine will work for you.According to the FDA, the vaccine’s long term effectiveness is still not clear. Merck has only been able to demonstrate that the vaccine works for at least four years. Merck plans to track patients for at least a decade in determining its effectiveness. The FDA also said that Merck has pledged to study further the vaccine’s safety after patients in clinical trials suffered a slightly higher number of serious side effects than did those who received dummy injections. No evidence exists that the vaccine was to blame, the FDA added. A La Vioxx????Merck, remember, is the maker of Vioxx which killed a goodly number of people while the FDA steadfastly refused to ban the sale of Vioxx. Now that we have explored the vaccine, let’s talk about this nasty virus itself. If you have ever had shingles, you know how painful this viral disease can be. Shingles is a disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox.Anyone who has had chickenpox is a prime candidate for developing its sister disease, shingles. That’s because you never actually “get rid” of chickenpox once you’ve had it. The blisters may disappear, but remnants of the virus remain in your body for the rest of your life, waiting for an opportunity (when you’re stressed or your immune system is suppressed) to reappear as very painful shingles. Shingles is estimated to affect 2 in every 10 people in their lifetime. This year, more than 500,000 people will develop shingles. Some statistics say over 1,000,000 people will develop shingles. Whichever the statistic, these are big numbers and a lot of painful suffering.Although shingles is most common in people over age 50, if you have had chickenpox, you are always at risk for developing shingles. Shingles is also more common in people with weakened immune systems from HIV infection, chemotherapy, radiation treatments, transplant operations, and stress.Early signs of shingles include burning or shooting pain and tingling or itching generally located on one side of the body or face. The pain can be severe. Rash or blisters are present anywhere from 1 to 14 days.If shingles appears on your face, it can lead to complications in your hearing and vision. For instance, if shingles affects your eye, the cornea can become infected and lead to temporary or permanent blindness. Another complication of the virus is postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), a condition where the pain from shingles persists for months, sometimes years, after the shingles rash has healed.Unfortunately, there is no cure for shingles, but the severity and duration of an attack of shingles can be significantly reduced if you are treated immediately with antiviral drugs, which include acyclovir, valacyclovir, or famcyclovir.Antiviral drugs may also help stave off the painful after-effects of PHN. Other treatments for PHN include painkillers, steroids, antidepressants, and anti-seizure medicine. Is shingles contagious? Yes, people with shingles are contagious to persons who have not had chickenpox. Therefore, people who have not had chickenpox can catch chickenpox if they have close contact with a person who has shingles. However, you can not catch shingles itself from someone else. Shingles is caused by the chickenpox virus which has been dormant (staying quiet) in your body ever since you had chickenpox. So, you get shingles from your own chickenpox virus, not from someone else.I had chicken pox when I was a kid and am just as vulnerable to shingles as anyone else who has had this disease. Am I going to run and get a vaccination? No way!I hate drugs and don’t trust the new vaccine, especially when serious side effects show up and the FDA says there is no real proof that the vaccine is to blame. They said the same thing about Vioxx while people were dieing! The best “vaccine and drugs” I know of to prevent shingles and other debilitating and life threatening disease are called anti-oxidants, nutritional supplements, healthy eating, and drinking ionized water.Another word for this shingles avoidance process is called PREVENTION, a word, regrettably, so foreign to so many people. It’s time everyone woke up to the fact that you don’t have to get sick, but you do have to practice prevention.
