Homeowners insurance question??

I was wondering how an adjuster determines what caused the damage to a roof ?

We had a freak rain storm and it caused my roof to leak considerbly, causing water damage in my kitchen. I don’t know the age of my roof, however, when I purchased my home, 1 year ago and it was inspected, the inspection report stated the roof was in good condition.

An adjuster is coming to my home on Wednesday to access the damage. However, he told me it would only be covered if there was visual damage to the roof and there is not any visual damage. For example, some shingles missing, etc. Caused by hail or wind. A severe rain storm doesn’t count?

My dilema is, I feel they should pay the claim since I have never had any problems with storms before in the past. I am afraid they will say it is not covered due to the roof being older or not seeing any visual damage….

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanks!

Man, aren’t insurance companies just the best! I gathered from your question that you didn’t have hail damage, just a leaking roof. Here’s a suggestion, get in your attic and look at the plywood that was used to create the foundation for your roof. If you can find any water stains there (or better yet damaged wood), see if there is a hole that goes (i.e. Nail hole or something else) all the way through the roof. If you can’t find anything in the attic, you might try looking at your shingles to see if anyone of them were blown up or might be loose. There is supposed to be tar strip on the bottom of each shingle tab that causes it to adhere to the shingle just below it on the roof. Perhaps one of them was blown up and back by the wind from your rainstorm. You might also check to see if any of the shingle tabs are cracked. By the way if it is just a hole in your roof, replacing your roof will be MUCH more expensive than just buying some roofing tar and fixing it yourself. Good luck dealing with your insurance company.

I need to replace shingles on one side of my house. The shingles are delaminating and the stones are coming out of the shingle. I am not sure what the cause is, may be summer heat and winter cold. We get temperatures from 110 down to 20 below here. Shingles have been on house in that area for 17+ years now and I think they are 20 year shingles.

Most newer shingles use a fiberglass base impregnated with asphalt and then covered with the colored stone.

As long as you don’t have leaks, they are still doing their job, but are getting near the end of their lifespan.

Just buy a GOOD brand of shingle and stay away from so called ‘bargins’. The base is thinner on the cheap stuff, and therefore won’t last near as long.

When you are infected with the virus the first time, you get chicken pox. When the chicken pox goes away, the virus stays in your body, but it lies dormant in nerve cells. Then in some people it is reactivated many years later (no-one is totally sure why – maybe stress etc) and the virus multiplies and travels back up the nerve to the skin, where it causes shingles. This is why shingles is so painful – it is basically a nerve infection.

The same kind of thing happens with cold sores – it’s a virus that lies dormant and occasinally gets re-activated.

I don’t know what is wrong with me and I am getting so worried and depressed.
I feel sick a lot, not being sick normally, but just nausea.
I started with a pain just underneath my left shoulder blade last October. The pain has been on and off and tended to be when I had been at work as I had just started a job as a dental nurse, so I blamed that. But the past few months it has got a lot worse and is very tender to touch, even if the water while having a shower hits it, it hurts.
In January I started with a pain in my lower right abdomen, which is there constantley, and has not gone. My right thigh also aches ALL the time. And my lower right back aches too. It sometimes feels as though I can’t breathe properley.
I have been to the doctors at least 20 times this year, seriously.
They have referred me for phisio for my leg pains, and think that I may have had shingles, which is causing my shoulder pain.
And they basically said that my trouble breathing and feeling sick is nothing, maybe anxiety.
I’m not asking for a medical diagnosis on here or anything like that, I just wondered if anyone had any rough idea, or had any experience of what these pains could be, as I am really getting to the point to thinking its something serious and I am going to die. I’m 21.
Any advice would be great. Thanks. x

Well i would asume your not going to die especially if you have visited your gp and they have checked you over.

Anyway your far to young to just die it sounds like your suffering with a bit of anxiety which is caused by the fight or flight response when triggered causes adrenaline to enter the system, this can also happen when there is no threat and thats why you are worrying

.Also with anxiety you can suffer with aches and pains due to the stress. Ive been constantly stuck on fight or flight and have just researched more about it. I have found if you understand whats happening to you, you can then deal with it. One thing i am sure is that your not dying.

The first thing you have to do is try to calm down. You are having a lot of anxiety issues over this and I don’t blame you. When I was reading your question, the first thing I thought of was shingles, but then I read the rest and guess they put that one to rest. Have you ever injured you shoulder while playing sports or anything. When even water hurts your skin, that really sounds like shingles. Shingles is so painful and if you’ve had chicken pox, then you are a candidate for it. It doesn’t sound like cancer to me because this pain is bouncing all over the place. Cancer will start in one area and stay there for a while and then begin to spread. It won’t do it right away and all over the place. Am I making any sense to you? I’m trying to explain it so you can understand it. Have you thought of seeing an Orthopedic Dr. Or Neurologist? I used to get terrible shoulder pain and my Dr injected cortisone into the tissue and it worked great. I’m just trying to give you some things to think about. I really don’t think you have cancer because haven’t you already seen the Dr for that. What kind of testing did they do on you? I can’t do any more than just suggesting to you because it sounds so complicated. Think about seeing another Dr. A neurologist would be your best bet. It sounds like the pain is nerve pain especially when it’s so sensitive to even water. I don’t know. I’m guessing here, I hope things get better for you. Hope you can get rid of that pain. Someone I know has shingles disease and ive never had chicken pox but ive recently had the vaccine. Can i get it still?

You absolutely CAN be vaccinated if you so choose. It’s called Zostavax. You can receive it even if you’ve already had a herpes zoster outbreak. I don’t believe the person above me understands the purpose of Zostavax. It doesn’t claim to “cure” h. Zoster or kill varicella-zoster virus. What it does is suppress reactivation of the virus. The person above also states he is unaware of a chicken pox vaccine. This has been available in the U.S. Since 1995. That’s 15 years ago. FIFTEEN! I guess word doesn’t get around that fast in some places even after 15 years.

The purpose of the varicella-zoster virus vaccine is to provide immunity against chicken pox. The purpose of Zostavax is to prevent reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus in those who have already had chicken pox.

You can check with your insurance and find out Zostavax is a covered benefit. And speak to your doctor to determine if you have any contraindications and get further explanations.
