Your Questions About Shingles

Sandra asks…

I got the chicken pox vaccine and my brother has shingles and we usually share the same bed can i get shingles from him or will i be ok????? Cause i’m really scared he is going through a lot of pain!

admin answers:

No you cannot get shingles from your brother. The chicken pox vaccine actually protects against both the chicken pox and the shingles. Hope your brother feels better soon.

Helen asks…

I RECEIVED CHICKEN POX VACCINE INSTEAD OF SHINGLES VACCINE. Am I covered?

do Iget the shingles vaccine Ihad chicken pox as a child and they gave me chicken pox instead of shingles vaccine What to do now>.

admin answers:

Shingles is caused by the chicken pox virus (varicella zoster). After an infection with chicken pox, the virus remains quiet in your body. In times of stress or illness, the virus may reactivate and cause shingles. Decades may pass before the first shingles attack.

Sometimes doctors may give the chicken pox vaccine even if a patient remembers getting the disease as a child if blood tests do not show that your immune system “remembers” the virus. Also, patients might incorrectly think that they had the chicken pox in the past.

Joseph asks…

Does anyone have a known vaccine for shingles?

I read online about a way do get rid of shingles from stuff you can buy at your grocery store. Does anyone know what it is?

admin answers:

Hi Dave

I dont know about vaccines, but hear are some better options.

Cause
Shingles can be due to chicken pox (in children), pleurisy, Bell`s palsy, herpes simplex, appendicitis, colic, gallstones, colitis, trigeminal neuralgia, or contact dermatitis. All of these conditions must be screened for and, if present, properly treated to provide lasting relief from shingles.

Caution: Shingles eruptions that last longer than two weeks can be a sign of underlying immune problems or cancer (particularly Hodgkin`s disease), and therefore require immediate medical attention. In addition, see an ophthalmologist immediately if herpes zoster occurs near the eyes or on the forehead, as it can cause blindness.

——————————————————————————–

Natural Cures

Aromatherapy: Massage the essential oils of lemon, geranium, bergamot, eucalyptus, tea tree, lavender, or chamomile along the affected area.

Diet: Eat an organic, whole foods diet that emphasizes fresh fruits and vegetables and minimizes carbohydrates (avoiding refined carbohydrates and sugars altogether).

Flower Essences: Crab Apple.

Herbs: Combine equal parts of oat straw, St. John`s wort, and skullcap tinctures and take one teaspoon of this mixture four times a day. Peppermint oil applied topically can also help reduce pain, unless the skin is excessively dry, in which case it is contraindicated.

Homeopathy: Useful homeopathic remedies include Arsen alb., Rhus tox., Sepia, Natrum mur., Hepar sulph., Caladium, and Acidum nit.

Juice Therapy: Drink carrot and celery juice with one tablespoon of parsley juice once or twice each day.

Nutritional Supplementation: At the first sign of outbreak, apply zinc oxide along the path of the affected nerve area two to three times daily. Other helpful nutrients include L-lysine, vitamin B-complex, vitamin B12, BHT, calcium, and high doses of vitamin C plus bioflavonoids. Topical application of vitamin E can also be helpful. Snake vaccine made from venom has also been known to take away the pain of shingles.

Topical Treatment: Apply apple cider vinegar to the affected area.

Alternative Professional Care
If your symptoms persist despite the above measures, seek the help of a qualified health professional. The following professional care therapies have all been shown to be useful for treating shingles: Acupuncture, Biofeedback Training, Detoxification Therapy, Energy Medicine (Light Beam Generator, Ondamed, TENS), Magnetic Field Therapy, Naturopathic Medicine, Neural Therapy, Orthomolecular Medicine (Vitamin B12 injections combined with adenosine monophosphate), Oxygen Therapy (Hydrogen Peroxide Therapy, Ozone), and Reflexology.

Best of health to you

Daniel asks…

whats the best treatment for shingles?

admin answers:

Try canamile lotion worked for me, but its a bit messy

George asks…

What’s the treatment for shingles?

admin answers:

Shingles is caused by a virus similar to the one that causes chicken pox. It causes a rash which can be quite painful and some flu like symptoms. The rash results in blisters, which will become scabs in about 5 days and follow nerve pathways, commonly from the spine to abdomen. Sometimes there are lasting scars after. There are pills to take and a cream to apply to the rash (Zovirax or Acyclovir) and usually codeine is ordered if the pain is not relieved by Tylenol. It is best to see a MD for treatment of any rash that persists. Good luck.

Richard asks…

can a person have shingles without a rash and is there treatment after a year?

admin answers:

It is very very rare to have shingles without a rash. Doctors really need to see the very typical rash to make the diagnosis with confidence. The only treatment for shingles can be used when the rash appears and it is used only in the first few days. It is only moderately helpful. There is a new vaccination to help prevent shingles. I think you do not have shingles but rather a mono-neuritis or nerve impingement. All these things tend to get better with time. Avoid un-necessary medications. Ask your doctor about an EMG test. Good Luck!

Carol asks…

what is the best treatment for moss on shingles?

admin answers:

For starters cut all overhanging branches away from the roof and clean with bleach water. After that you can install a zinc strip along the ridge of your roof, when the rainwater hits it minerals will run down the roof and keep it clean.

Your Questions About Shingles

Steven asks…

how to cut wooden(cedar) shingles on a corner when alternating the overlapping?

I am installing shingles (wooden) on a corner and can not figure out how to cut the stained shingles. The shingle is not squre and that is the main problem.
One online manual sugested we complete the corners and then trim or fine tune at the end of the job. Now how in the, would we do that?

admin answers:

Have replaced corner shakes fairly easily.
Same for new corners.
A small block plane will make it easy to square up sides if they are really bad,
The tune up at the end is just matching the angled side of the last shake when you reach a corner overlap
Doing one run at a time makes it easier to maintain the alternating “weave ” of the corner overlaps.
Could do it all at once & the procedure is the same but harder to fix if you mess up.
Best regards

David asks…

How much of the asphalt shingles torn off of roofs is recycled?

Old asphalt can be used to add to the mix of road asphalt and for other uses. How much is actually recycled, and what are the obstacles? Have you been successful in having your old shingles be recycled, instead of just having them hauled away to a landfill?

admin answers:

In Alberta, Canada I believe the recycle rate for asphalt shingles is extremely low.
I have worked in the waste industry for almost 8 years now and despite our having bylaws stating no asphalt shingles are to go into our landfills….I know a lot of them are.
They are hidden in bags and boxes and dumped with the rest.
I think the only way we can change this is to increase fines and actually levy them when needed. Also, education of what can be done with them, where, how and why it is important to do so.
When a large storm blew a lot of mine off my roof, I took them myself, to a landfill site that separates and sends recyclables to where they should go. I never knew they did this until I asked.

Sharon asks…

what is the difference between genital shingles and herpes? and how can you tell the diference ?

from what i can find shingles and herpes seem to be identical ? the only difference i can find is that herpes is transmitted sexually and shingles comes from chicknpox. but i cant find a way to tell genital shingles from herpes ?

admin answers:

Hi! Genital shingles and genital herpes just come from different strains of the herpes virus.

Chicken pox is the herpes zoster virus and once you have the infection it remains dormant in your body…usually attaching itself to nerve cells…it can return in the form of shingles and it causes an outbreak of painful blisters that runs along the nerve…this is what makes it so painful and tingly. So it is possible for the outbreak to occur anywhere you have nerves…basically anywhere on your body. If you have an outbreak in the genital area it will be diagnosed as genital shingles. It is not sexual transmitted.

Genital herpes is the herpes simplex type2 virus…it is contagious in the blister and crusting over phase and is incurable. It lies dormant in the system and outbreaks can and often do return….you would get Zovirax treatment from your doctor or GUM clinic to make recurring outbreaks less painful and ferocious.

Herpes simplex type1 is the cold sore virus…which also recurs.

Hope this helps! 🙂

Charles asks…

I used paint thinner to remove paint from ashpalt shingles. How do I remove the stain it left behind?

I spilled oil based paint on my shingles and used paint thinner to remove it and now there is a wet mark where I used the paint thinner. What can I use to remove the paint thinner from the shingles.

admin answers:

The paint thinner has dissolved the asphalt in the shingles and damaged them.

You can replace the damaged areas or have your whole roof re-shingled if there is not an old layer already under the current shingle layer.

Replacing just the damaged sections is the easiest and cheapest option.

Linda asks…

Is it okay to put a second layer of asphalt shingles on my roof?

I believe that my roof need a new layer of asphalt shingles. They are not curling yet, but they are about 12-15 years old and they have been repaired a few times, etc. Is it okay to put a second layer of shingles over the top of the old? Do I have to wory about re flashing the chimney, etc?

admin answers:

Code allows 2 layers of shingles before you have to do a tear off. But before you do, check for dips or soft spots. There may be some sheathing you’ll need to replace. I doubt you will unless you’ve had past leaks. I now live in Florida and I was told they must do a tear off here because of the heat causing the orig. Layer to curl. And you shouldn’t have to re flashing anything. Good Luck

Your Questions About Shingles

Richard asks…

Has anyone else got shingles from the flu shot??

I had the flu shot 9 days ago and I have developed painful shingles on my back…my arm reacted straight after the shot, I also had the flu from the shot. Has anyone else reacted like me??

admin answers:

No, but it may not be from the vaccine. They vaccine and needle are completely sterilized until the package it comes in is opened.

Lisa asks…

Can I get a flu shot if I’m recovering from Shingles?

I’ve already finished a course of Valtrex and am on my 3rd week of recovery. I don’t have symptoms any more and my scabs are starting to heal.

admin answers:

Don’t bother. There is no benefit in a flu shot.

Do NOT get vaccinated.

A vaccinated person is MORE likely to get a disease than a non-vaccinated person. The whole theory of vaccination is flawed. It causes a weakening of the immune system thus making those who are innoculated more susceptible to disease.
There are so many awful side effects to vaccination that it should be considered extremely dangerous.
Just sit back and think for a while.
Is there any sense in injecting a disease directly into your body.
We have been subjected to an awful mind control program to enable the drug manufacturers to make a fortune.

The Vaccination Hoax

Mandy asks…

can you get a flu shot if you have the shingles?

will th flu shot affect you physically if you have the shingles? will ask my dr.at my next visit…thought someone here might know now..thanks, bluedot

admin answers:

Hi,
Good question!

According to the CDC:
If you are sick with a fever when you go to get your flu shot, you should talk to your doctor or nurse about getting your shot at a later date.
However, you can get a flu shot at the same time you have a respiratory illness without fever or if you have another mild illness.

I’ve listed the link below.

Basically, Its a personal preference choice.

Chris asks…

Is is possible to have Shingles from Tetanus shot!!? I got it like 3 months ago and now i have shingles?

if you find an article about it please share it with me
I have never been sick in my life. And since i got the tetanus shot i have been sick very often. I think Tetanus activated or triggered the chicken pox virus

admin answers:

Shingles is not caused from that. Things like stress cause shingles, as shingles is the delayed form of the chicken pox. It hides around and comes out when your body is weakened, like being already sick, highly stressed, anxious, etc.

Betty asks…

is there a way to find out if you had cken pox as a child? Im 55 and want to get a vaccine shot for shingles?

As I understand it, the vaccine you would get would depend on whether you have ever had chicken pox

admin answers:

In the appropriate age group, 60 and over, the zoster vaccine is given whether they have a known history of chickenpox or not, because the overwhelming majority of people that age were exposed to chickenpox, whether they know it or not. The vaccine is not licensed in your age group, so to get it, a doctor would have to prescribe it off-label. If you wanted to know if you had had chickenpox as a child, get a varicella IgG blood titer.

Your Questions About Shingles

Helen asks…

How does Shingles affect the human body?

Hello,
I am a college student and recently have been diagnosed with shingles. I have always had a week immune system, thus getting shingles at the age of 18 didn’t surprise me. I have the usual symptoms, like the rashes, the itching and burning sensation on the side. However, this morning I started to vomit blood. At first it looked like dark brown cloths, with some bright red blood here and there. Is this normal? Do I have to worry?

admin answers:

I know most of the antiviral medications, commonly prescribed to treat shingles, list vomiting as a side effect (as do opioids and anticonvulsants). However, I haven’t heard of these medications causing blood in the vomit. It would probably be a good idea to check with your doctor about this.

If it happened after you were prescribed something, you may be having some kind of adverse reaction to the medication.

Donald asks…

What is the recommended patern to lay down shingles on a roof?

I am doing my own roof on a garage and I need any advice as to laying the shingles? Pattern? Where to start? How many nails? How to do the paper between the decking and shingles? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

admin answers:

Instructions will be on the roofing shingle packaging. Most areas require 6 nails per shingle. Underlayment is usually 15 pound felt paper. They also make an ice & weather shield which is much heavier. It is used at the eaves to protect from leakage during winter ice damming at the gutters. This type of product should be used as underlayment for the entire roof of roof pitch is below 3 in 12 pitch.

Donna asks…

How to cut shingles when they are up?

In a brain fart, I put up my shingles at my camp. Everything went great but i have to cut 6″ off the gable ends. How do i cut thru the asphalt shingles?
I’m thinking an ordinary saw/recip would not be able to cut thru the sand.

admin answers:

Use a utility knife with a roofers blade.
The blades can be purchased at any hardware or lumber store, the look like a regular blade but have a hook on both ends so it cuts from undeneath as well as the top at the same time.

Betty asks…

What happens if someone has shingles and it goes untreated for a long time?

According to my mom and a family friend who is a doctor, I think I have shingles. If it is not treated for a long time, will anything bad happen?
i’m 17, have had the chicken pox and the vaccine for it, a weak immune system, and costocondritus. The family friend doesnt know it’s me. My mom had it a long time ago and it just went away. My mom said its the same thing. I have it on and around my knee. The part about the nerves and pain stuff…If someone does something to hurt me, I can’t tolerate the pain, but (and i know this might sound awful, but i dno how else to put it) if it’s self inflicted, I can tolerate it more. I naturally have a high tolerance of pain.

admin answers:

Shingles usually goes away on its own. It only causes serious problems in people who have suppressed immune systems or when it affects the facial nerves. These are rare.

The vaccine can be helpful in preventing it from returning, but it’s not very useful in treating a current attack.

Maria asks…

How do you interface roof shingles with a stone wall made with highly irregular stone shapes?

I have found several articles on the internet about roofing and how if you have a wall with stone veneer there are metal flashing products that fit in the mortar lines, lay vertically along the stone, and then pass under the roof shingles. What is done when large, irregularly shaped, real stones are used in a stone wall (think slipformed riprap or similar) that is higher than the roofline? How do you keep water from leaking between the wall and the roof?

admin answers:

Caulk is a bad answer.

You will need some type of flashing that will allow some molding to the rock in addtion to removing some of the grout (mortar) between the stones and then repointing (reinstalling the mortar between the stones. Another option, depending on your particular circumstance, may be to get an abrasive blade for a skil saw and score a straight line in the stone about 6″ above the roof line. You would then insert the edge of the flashing in this groove, bend it to fit tight against the stone, bend it again at the roof deck where your shingles are, and then caulk or put mortar in the groove.

If this doesn’t work, you may need to grind or chip the stone to make an area flat enough to apply the flashing.

Copper can be used, I have seen lead sheets used too.

treatment for shingles???????????

my grandma has shingles
-how did she get it…?
-treatments? any over-the-counter meds?

my parents say you shouldn’t do anything…they say they will go away by themselves

admin answers:

First, I am not a medical professional. But my hubby had shingles last fall and we found out that they DO NOT go away by themselves! In fact, they will get worse and worse unless treated with acyclovir (Valtrex) or a similar drug. Please urge your parents to get grandma to a doctor…this is a terrible, painful disease.

Joseph asks…

An all natural treatment for shingles?

admin answers:

1. Cayenne Pepper To The Rescue
Many people love hot, spicy foods that are made with Cayenne Pepper. You may even love its hotness too. Taken internally this pepper has a lot of beneficial health effects. Used as an ointment, Cayenne Pepper is a natural treatment for Shingles. It can help relieve the itchiness, pain and discomfort. Simply mix a bit of it in with a soothing body lotion. Apply this mixture onto the area that’s affected by Shingles every four to six hours.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar Can Work Wonders
Just like Cayenne Pepper, Apple Cider Vinegar has a myriad of healthful uses. It can used as a liniment for Shingles. Just dab Apple Cider Vinegar on the affected area several times a day. Use it at night if the symptoms wake you up! It should relieve the pain and heal the red spots or blisters.

Or, you can take Apple Cider Vinegar internally for the natural treatment of Shingles. Pour two tablespoons of this type of vinegar in an eight-ounce glass of tap water. If you don’t like the taste of this mixture, add a little jelly or honey to sweeten the taste. Drink this mixture twice a day and see if it doesn’t help relieve your symptoms.

3. Oatmeal Isn’t Just For Breakfast
Oatmeal tastes great for breakfast, but have you ever applied it to that annoying area of Shingles? Mix up some plain, uncooked oatmeal with a bit of water until it forms a paste. Apply the paste to your red spots or blisters. Oatmeal is a natural treatment for this viral illness because it soothes burning skin irritations and relieves itching.

You can also pour some uncooked oatmeal in your bathtub too. Fill it with cool water and swish the oatmeal around. Then, soak the affected area of your body in the oatmeal-water.

4. Are Your Vitamins Working For You?
You probably already take a multi-vitamin every day, but is it specially-formulated to help reduce stress? A natural treatment for Shingles is to take a multi-vitamin that’s rich in stress-busters like B Complex Vitamins, Vitamin E, and C.

5. Use Stress Reduction Methods
Since stress and anxiety are also believed to cause an itchy, painful outbreak of Shingles, you can use stress-reduction methods to relieve yourself of these annoying symptoms. These natural treatments for Shingles include meditation,
Yoga, and deep-breathing exercises. Check your phone book for classes located near you.

Maria asks…

Role of anti viral treatment in Shingles.?

My female friend in early 50s has developed Shingles‘ rash in her lumber area, since 7 days. Has no co-morbidities. She is advised to take anti viral. She is reluctant. What are the pros and cons?

admin answers:

One of the best things she can do is to go to the health food store and buy lots of Blue-Green Algae and take that. It shortens the duration of the problem. Also, Oleuropin (olive leaf extract) breaks the reproductive cycle of viruses and taking lots of this will help as well.

There are NO antibiotics that work for this problem because the germ is a virus. Antibiotics turn on the “B” cells of the humoral immune system in the body. Since the “B” cells and the “T” cells are reciprocal, when you turn on the “B” cells to produce macrophages out of white cells, it turns OFF the “T” cells. “T” cells are what fight viral infections and cancer cells.

I would not take ANY drugs for this problem because all drugs damage the body, especially the liver.

Good luck to you

help me i’m freaking out!?

someone please tell me what the first time having an outbreak of herpes is like? plus how long does it take for it to show after you’ve been infected?
i’m scared because i’ve got thrush like symptoms (well that’s what my mum thinks it is) but this morning when i woke up there were a few blisters.. although this might be from using savlon and emollient creams on it because apparently that’s not good.
i’ve been with the guy i’m with now for 8 months and before that there was only one other guy one time which was a mistake but we used a condom. ahhh

admin answers:

Your first breakout will be your worst, if its herpes that you have.

I was told by my doctor that it takes anywhere from a week to 6 months to show up after contact. BUT Ive heard other people say up to a year. I just know my doctor told me 6 months.

Also, condoms do little to protect you from herpes. Herpes is spread by touch. Think about it, a condom only protects the shaft of the penis there is still a lot of skin exposed.

Herpes is very painful. Herpes are blisters, and they usually are in clusters. Pain that I get right before a breakout are: pain in my legs or lower stomach or back, sometimes fatigue, and itching at the breakout site. Some people hurt so bad that they can hardly walk. It will hurt to urinate as well. A very strong burning sensation. They will itch really bad!! You having thrush though might cause itching too. Your best bet is to go see a doctor now while you have this “breakout” because it is much easier for them to diagnose you. Dont let them just look and say “oh you have herpes” because it is misdiagnosed all the time this way. Make them do a culture or swab and/or blood work.

Good luck and hope I helped.

Yeast Infection, still? Help.?

I went to the GYN, Dec. ’06. She said I had a yeast infection. I’ve been treated 4 times with prescription pills and a suppos. cream because it never went away. Since my last treatment 2 weeks ago I’ve been fine until today. My discharge is back (white-yellow; clumpy and runny) and I itch again when I discharge. I’m not sexually active. I had “messed around” about 4 years ago with a guy.. and gave oral once. Every once in a while when I itch it, the skin become raw-like and bleeds a little. What else could this be? Could something else be showing up from 4 years ago? Could it be a bacteria growth? Before I ever got treated I had been itching for about 4 months. What could be symptoms of other things that sound like this? Please help, I have an appt. next week with my doctor, but I’m really nervous.

Other than this I’ve felt fine, haven’t been sick in who knows how long. I know when you scratch at something, the skin can always bleed or become raw, this wouldn’t be herpes right?

admin answers:

There are some excellent answers here, indeed women feel guilty for anything done that may be the contact of STD The Antibiotic has side effects that may cause, vaginal infections, it is good to check them out first, and have the Physician check you for any STD if you are worried. I can only add that gentle cleansing of the vaginal area with a mild vinegar and water solution and the rectal area as well eliminates a lot of the itching, that occurs even when no infection is present . Best wishes for the right answers. Get well soon.

help, I think My ex’s new girlfriend is doing voodoo on me?

Me and my ex broke up a few months ago and I kinda have a feeling its was because of his new girlfriend. We had a great relationship, he was even talking about marrage. Out of no where he started acting different and this girl shows up (she claimed to be a vergin)… By the way I know sex wasn’t the cause for the break up because I always ended up putting him to sleep…but after the break up me and my ex remaind as friends and he calls me his bestfriend (since I’m his bestfriend he told me that he found out the girl wasn’t even a vergin). They have a whole lot of arguments and he just keep going back. His family loves me and so does his friends. One day I was talking to his mother and she told me that she thinks his new girlfriend is doing voodoo. His mother found out that the girl is from Haiti (I have nothing against Haitians I know and love a few) and she’s very controling. One afternoon the girlfriend told his mother that she doesn’t like my friendship with my ex and she hates the fact that he is always talking about me and telling her what a perfect girlfriend I was. When my birthday was coming up my ex planned this whole surprise weekend trip for me which he told his girlfriend about. when my birthday came my cell phone froze for the whole weekend and everyone that was suppose to party with me came down with a stomach virus back to back for the whole weekend. On top of that a few months before this me and my ex slipped up and had sex 🙁 I didn’t mean for it to happen. A few days later I ended up with blisters. I went to the hospital (because I never had anything in that area) and they told me that it looks like herpes but I’ll have to wait for the test results come in. I’m a health freak I go to the doctor every 3 weeks just to get tested for everything (even thou I’m not sexually active anymore I still get tested). I was so upset with myself I know I got what I desreve, anyway I had these painful blisters for like 2 weeks, when I called the doctor to get my results they said that I didn’t have anything. I was totally clean from any STD. I asked them what could cause it and the doctor said that she don’t know what it was and what could cause the blisters. I told my Mom (she’s west indian) about what happened and she told me that back in the Islands she heard that some women “fix” or put voodoo on their vaginas so that if the man sleeps with another woman they would get symptoms of an STD. After 2 weeks of pain it went away but came back for 3 months straight, Now I haven’t gotten it anymore… By the way I’m no longer friends with my ex because I don’t know if this Girl is doing Voodoo…. Please help me!!!! Do anyone think this girl is doing Voodoo? If so please tell me how to reverse it or stop it!!!!!!!!!!!! Please Help Me… I don’t want it to affect my future with anyone else!

Your Questions About Shingles

Nancy asks…

where would i get a shingles shot in san diego?

admin answers:

There’s no such shot available.

The chicken pox vaccine will NOT vaccinate you against shingles if you already have symptoms. Treatment is generally with ORAL antiviral drugs such as acyclovir (Zovirax), famciclovir (Famvir) or valaciclovir (Valtrex). For the antiviral drugs to be effective, patients typically need to begin taking them within 2-3 days of the appearance of the rash.

Also the chicken pox vaccine is known as Varicella.

It’s also worth noting that it has been claimed that shingles may increase after introduction of varicella vaccine.

Ruth asks…

My kids (5&6yrs), who haven’t had the chicken pox shot, have been exposed to shingles. How long until…?

… I know if they are going to come down with the chicken pox? Do I need to keep them out of school until I know? What do I need to look for, other than the obvious red marks? Thanks!!

admin answers:

Shingles are contagious for people that have never had chicken pox or the chicken pox vaccine. It will take somewhere between 1-3 weeks before your children have any symptoms if they did in fact get the virus. If they have no symptoms for three weeks, they should be in the clear. You do not need to keep them out of school until then. Its not a certainty that they will get sick, and the vast majority of children their age have had the vaccine. Once they do start to get symptoms, though, they should stay out of school until their lesions crust over. Symptoms before the lesions pop up include fever, flu-like symptoms, and pain and itching on the trunk.

Richard asks…

i have had chicken pox and i want to get the shingles immunity shot.?

any cliniques in san diego, walk in’s?

Is there a shingles immunity shot? Because chickenpox and shingles are caused by the same virus, varicella. What basically happens is that the virus retreats and lives near your nerves in hibernation. Shingles happens when on the off chance, the virus wakes up again and moves to the skin cell area.

Edit: Oh wait I just found there is. Here are the requirements:

Zostovax was approved by the FDA in May, 2006[2]. The FDA recommended it only for adults aged 60 who meet the following requirements[1]:

* Has not had a life-threatening allergic reaction to gelatin, the antibiotic neomycin, or other component of the herpes zoster vaccine.
* Does not have a weakened immune system due to HIV/AIDS or another disease or medications (such as steroids, radiation and chemotherapy) that affect the immune system.
* Does not have a history of cancer affecting the bone marrow or lymphatic system, such as leukemia or lymphoma.
* Does not have active, untreated tuberculosis.

The chickenpox vaccine does not prevent shingles. But you cannot get shingles from anybody else. You can only get chickenpox from someone with shingles, if you are not immune to chickenpox.

If you are in otherwise good health, the rash should be pretty much gone in about a week. You may, however, experience some post-herpetic neuralgia, pain that persists after the rash is gone.

Does anyone remember these crisps they were called ‘Shingles’?

I do! Or was the name something that sounded similar to shingles? It wasn’t ‘Pringles’ lol! They were shaped like witches hats and looked as if there were lots of little rings pushed together? If you do remember them could you please try and find me a picture of them? My friends are getting annoyed with me because I keep saying I do remember them and they say they never existed. Your Questions About Shingles

Joseph asks…

Can you take the shingles vaccine when you’re sick?

If you have a bad cold, sore throat, etc…. Can you take the shingles vaccine? Please – no “I don’t know”, or “Go see a doctor”.

admin answers:

Sorry, but your doctor is your best guide. Normally, it is recommended you recover from any illness before you get the vaccine, but your doctor may say it is ok, depending on the severity of your symptoms, whether or not you have a fever, etc. You definitely don’t want the vaccine to make you sicker.

Donald asks…

If a retiree did not have chicken pox in childhood, is there any reason to take the new Shingles vaccine?

I don’t remember having chicken pox, and both parents and my elder sibling are deceased, so there is no one I can ask to verify whether I did or didn’t have chicken pox in early childhood. I have been unable to find any documentation concerning this in my files.

admin answers:

In answer to your initial question, no, there’s no reason to have the Zostavax vaccine.

But since you go on to say that in reality you don’t know if you had chicken pox or not, you can have blood titers drawn to measure for varicella zoster virus antibodies. Varicella zoster is the virus that causes chicken pox. If you don’t have any antibodies or if yours are insufficient for active immunity, you’d be better off getting a chicken pox vaccine. Speak to your doctor about this and follow your doctor’s advice.

Charles asks…

Can someone who had the chicken pox vaccine get shingles?

I know that if someone had chicken pox, they can have shingles. What about the vaccine?

admin answers:

OH YES!

Maria asks…

If you get a shingles vaccine…can you “give” a child chicken pox?

I am getting a shingles vaccine but I babysit my niece – who has not yet had the chicken pox. Is it possible to give her the chicken pox due to the live virus in the vaccine?

admin answers:

The varicella virus in Zostavax is attentuated. This means weakened. But you may still give it to her. In fact, you’re also likely to transmit the virus during one of your Herpes zoster outbreaks. Suggestion: Your niece gets vaccinated and you keep your distance for a week or so. But you should be speaking to your doctor about this and take that advice.

Mandy asks…

Could enlarged abdominal lymph nodes be a side effect of the shingles vaccine?

admin answers:

This is a live vaccine which works by boosting the immune response.

Enlarged lymph nodes are a common immune response.
