Your Questions About Shingles

Donald asks…

Can Shingles be a Side effect of the H1N1 shot?

My mom is nearly 40, she recently got the H1N1 shot on December 12.. The doctors now think that she might have shingles. Have their been any cases of shingles occurring after the shot? Thankyou šŸ™‚

admin answers:

No. Shingles is caused by a virus which is a completely different virus than the flu viruses. Shingles is not caused by any flu vaccine, or the flu itself.

Mary asks…

Has anyone else heard about a “shingles” shot–to protect against it?

We seniors who had measles ( or was it chicken pox) as little kids, which a whole generation of us did, will all be subject to it I understand. And it can be both very painful and debilitating. Anyone on Q/A heard of this?

admin answers:

It was the Chicken Pox we had as kids that comes back as adults and attacks the nervous system causing Shingles. I had them on my face 2 years ago and in my scalp it was awful. I kooked like someone had beat me up one eye swelled shut. But they didn’t give me a shot this must be very new. The only thing the doc said is that I could get them again… I hope I never have that again It’s very painful…

Chris asks…

if I had chicken pox as a kid should I get the shingles shot?

I am 61 female
I had the blood test done that shows I had the vaccine for measles and mumps but they did not detect the chicken pox one

admin answers:

Yes! I got mine a couple of years ago at age 61 and I feel much easier. We were actually getting our series of travel shots (yellow-fever, typhoid) when I started looking at the posters at the clinic. I have had older relatives say that shingles are the most painful thing they have ever experienced, including not even being able to sleep in a bed. They can keep coming back too.
If you will research this on the web and look at some of the terrible places you can have them breakout I think you will agree this is the best $100. You can spend. Singles is a debilitating disease. I also finally had a pneumonia shot that I intend to get again every 5 years.
You supposedly cannot have shingles is you never had chicken pox but I wouldn’t take the chance.

Betty asks…

My wife & myself had the shingles shot last fall, i sent in all of the necessary papers for reimbursmetn, but?

I never had a reply.

admin answers:

They likely didn’t get them, but i do have to say, i have shingles right now, it is the worst pain i have evr been in, so at least you got the shot.

Nancy asks…

allergic reactions to shingles shot for seniors?

has anyone else had allergic reaction after getting the shingles vaccine for elderly persons ?

admin answers:

There could be redness or swelling or itching at the injection site that is normal. But they are injecting a live virus into your body so u may have a chance of getting a small bout of the virus. Hope that helped

Robert asks…

My girlfriend just had an ANA blood test positive for Lupus..what do I do?

I’m feeling really paranoid and afraid now.. my girlfriend is 30 years old, she has hypothyroidism and as a result she has her blood tested every 6 weeks, 3 months ago she had Shingles which is odd for someone at 30. She also reported being tired all the time and having joint pain to her doctor so they did an ANA test on the blood and it was positive for Lupus.. they said she would see a Rheumatologist but that isn’t for another month and a half, should we be demanding to see someone sooner now so we can get a diagnosis and know what to do and perhaps get medication?

I feel betrayed by the American health care system.. my girlfriend in all likelihood has this disease and may have had it for years now which lead to other conditions, we’re not surewhat to do now, its very saddening and depressing.

What advice do you have for her? Any vitamins/natural supplements that could help with the condition? She is afraid of taking prescription steroids because shes already overweight and doesnt want to gain a ton more, and her mom died as a result of becoming bedridden after being put on steroids, she doesn’t want the same fate..

admin answers:

I understand how the two of you are feeling. I was just told by a neurologist I most likely have lupus and I’m waiting on my blood results to come back. As for demanding to see someone sooner….I personally don’t think that’s necessary. If she’s had it for years a few weeks aren’t going to make or break the disease. I’m not sure on the advice for treating the disease, but I can tell you as far as being her partner the support you give her is priceless. Number one thing I can recommend is listening to her. Turn off the TV and talk about it. Once all the thoughts and feelings are out in the open everything feels better.

Betty asks…

Did any of the females here who underwent chemo or radiation continue to have menstrual irregularities *after*?

going into remission?

I’ve had no evidence of disease for a whole year. My cycle had been erratic during active treatment, but my oncologist assured me that was normal. It became regular again about four months after my last cycle of chemo and was very predictable to the day. I’m now 10 days late and it’s really worrying me. I’ve never had unprotected sex. I’m not on birth control, but we always use condoms. I’ve done 8 pregnancy tests (seriously, 8) and they are all negative. I’m not pregnant.

I’ve had some significant health issues this summer like shingles, viral meningitis and some significant abdominal issues. Most recently I had a grade 2 abdominal tear, but it was caused by dancing so I don’t know that it would have any bearing on this. I’ve had all the symptoms of PMS for two whole weeks. It just won’t freaking start already. I don’t know what’s going on. Could the chemo still be causing this? I’m scared that I’m already infertile or something.

I had Hodgkin’s Lymphoma 3B. I’m 18 now.

admin answers:

Hi,
I can only give you an answer from my own experience, obviously every woman is different though.
The day I started my chemo i was in the middle of a cycle and it stopped the next day. I did not start menstruating again for another year and a half after my treatment. I also noticed that i no longer got my period at night time. Ever. It’s like my cycle decided to clock off for the day after 6pm, didn’t really mind that part of it though.

Our bodies are in a constant state of change, and your body has had the added stress of the horrible chemotherapy drugs, it’s been through a lot, so try to relax

do a pregnancy test just in case, even though you’re being safe accidents can sometimes happen.

Mandy asks…

23 weeks pregnant and need some advice?

I am currently 23 weeks pregnant with my first child. I work a very demanding job as a Certified Nursing Assistant in a Nursing home. I’ve had all sorts of back issues with this pregnancy i was even restricted to a 20 pound lift. My work responded with removing me from the schedule until i had the restrictions removed completely, they even knew my husband wasn’t working so i had no choice. Now i’m getting further along in my pregnancy and more cautious with what i do and how much i lift. They continue to attempt to get me to do 50 pounds or more lifts and i complain about it until they move me. I’ve already had a few small contractions because they made me work 7 days in a row. They are making it out like i am lazy and don’t do my job. They also send me into rooms with infectious disease and don’t bother to warn me half the time before i do (things like MRSA, C-DIF, Shingles, Scabies, etc). I don’t know what to do i am beside myself with all of this i only want to protect my baby i’m not trying to be lazy. And i know what they did with my restriction was illegal but what can i do. Can any of you give me advice its like they want me to lose my child or hurt myself. I’m going out of my mind. My insurance is through them that is the only reason i’ve stayed this long.
I had to have physical therapy in the third month of my pregnancy due to the intense pain in my back, it was why the restriction was put into place i was paying out hundreds to PT and my workplace was making me do heavy lifts and ruin the progress i made. My doctor only lifted the restriction under the terms that they only gave me the light loads of work. Now with my pregnancy in its 6 month next week my back is going out again due to the strain of my job. I could cry over this its horrible.

admin answers:

You must be allowed to keep working as long as you are able to do
your job. Your boss cannot make a rule about how long you must stay
out of work before or after childbirth
. If your company does not
offer sick leave, then it may be discriminating against pregnant
workers.

Your employer must treat you at least as well as he/she treats other
workers who can’t do their jobs for a short time. For example, if
your company lets a worker go who had a heart attack or broken leg on
paid or unpaid disability leave, you must also have this right if you
are unable to work because of pregnancy or childbirth. If your
pregnancy stops you from being able to do your job, you have the
right to be given easier duties, if other workers who can’t do their
jobs for a short time get this right.

Many States have equal employment opportunity laws that protect
against pregnancy discrimination. In addition, the States of
California, Hawaii, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island, and Puerto
Rico also pay partial wages during time off from work for medical
problems, including those of pregnancy. Find out if your State has
this law, which is called “temporary disability insurance.” Some
employers, especially larger companies, also offer this type of
insurance. Check your benefits.

HOW MUCH TIME CAN YOU HAVE OFF?

A new law, the Family and Medical Leave Act, gives you added
protections. It went into effect on August 5, 1993. If your doctor
or health care provider says you are sick and unable to work during
your pregnancy, you may be able to get up to 12 weeks off without pay
under this new law. You also are allowed time off for childbirth,
adoption, and to care for a sick child or family member. If you take
time off under this law, you have the right to the same job or a job
with equal pay and benefits when you come back to work. Call the
Women’s Bureau at 1-800-827-5335 for a copy of our brochure, Family
and Medical Leave Act: Know Your Rights.

Some States have their own family leave laws that protect your right
to return to your job after time off for pregnancy-related problems
or childbirth.

WHAT CAN YOU DO IF YOU ARE DISCRIMINATED AGAINST?

1) Write down what happened. Write down the date, time and place of
the incident, as soon as possible. Include what was said and who was
there. Keep a copy of these notes at home. They will be useful if
you decide to file a complaint with your company or to take legal
action.

2) Get emotional support from friends and family. It can be very
upsetting to feel you have been treated unfairly at work. Take care
of yourself. Think about what you want to do. Get help to do it.

3) Talk to your union representative. Union rules often allow you to
file a grievance. If you don’t have a union, call a women’s or civil
rights group for help.

4) Talk to your employer. Your company may have an Equal Employment
Opportunity Officer or a way for you to file a “complaint.” For
instance, some companies have new ways to resolve problems, like
“mediation.” Check your employee handbook for procedures.

5) Find out how other pregnant workers have been treated. Talk to
any women who may have had trouble at work because they were
pregnant.

6) Keep doing a good job and keep a record of your work. Keep copies
at home of your job evaluations and any letters or memos that show
that you do a good job at work. Your boss may criticize your job
performance later on in order to defend his or her discrimination.

7) You have a right to file a charge. The law has a very short time
limit on how long you can wait to file a charge against your company.
You can file a charge even if you do not work for your employer
anymore. You can file a charge with the U. S. Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission (EEOC) at 1-800-669-EEOC. Most states and
local governments also have a Human Rights or Civil Rights office
that can help.

8) Find out more about your legal rights. You do not need a lawyer
to file a charge with EEOC. But you may want to talk with a lawyer
who specializes in sex discrimination. The State bar association or
the women’s bar association in your area can refer you to lawyers.
They can help you figure out what to do. They know the pros and cons
of different legal actions, including the time and the cost of filing
a lawsuit.

YOU CAN WIN

Many women have fought discrimination and have improved their work
lives. The first step is to know your rights under the law. Laws
give you and your coworkers the right to start a group or a union to
try to get better treatment at work.

You can also go to court to get back the money you lost because of
discrimination. In 1991, 13,000 pregnant workers collected $66
million in a “class action” lawsuit. The new Civil Rights Act of
1991 gives you the right to be paid money for the hurt and the pain
discrimination caused you.

Your Questions About Shingles

Mandy asks…

May have shingles? Listed symptoms, someone help?

A few days ago I woke up with a horrible headache that lasted all day but toward the night time it went away.
The next day I woke up with one area of my left side of my back hurting really bad– it felt like a certain muscle was just throbbing and no matter how hard I tried or how many positions I laid in, it would not relax.
Now, about 3 days after I woke up with the headache, I still have a little headache but the pain in my left side has stretched from the left side of my spine to my side and my ribs on the left side.
I feel very tired but for some reason I can’t fall asleep.
I don’t have a rash at all, however.
The pain isn’t unbearable but it just feels very sore and sometimes my stomach and chest area get random pains of soreness.
Nothing itches either, though.

Does anyone have any advice or suggestions as to what this may be?
Also, it’s seems like there’s an area where all the pain is caused and in the area it hurts very bad even with the slightest touch but everywhere else that the pain is stretched is just sore, it doesn’t hurt like this certain area along my spine.

Jenny asks…

Can you have shingles without the rash that comes with it?

I was recently diagnosed with shingles because of my symptoms of pain and location of pain and was gien prescription medication, but have no rash. Could it be I was diagnosed and treated soon enough?

admin answers:

Hi BambooGreen

Here are some ideas to heal the issue.

Cause
Shingles can be due to chicken pox (in children), pleurisy, Bell`s palsy, herpes simplex, appendicitis, colic, gallstones, colitis, trigeminal neuralgia, or contact dermatitis. All of these conditions must be screened for and, if present, properly treated to provide lasting relief from shingles.

Caution: Shingles eruptions that last longer than two weeks can be a sign of underlying immune problems or cancer (particularly Hodgkin`s disease), and therefore require immediate medical attention. In addition, see an ophthalmologist immediately if herpes zoster occurs near the eyes or on the forehead, as it can cause blindness.

——————————…

Natural Cures

Aromatherapy: Massage the essential oils of lemon, geranium, bergamot, eucalyptus, tea tree, lavender, or chamomile along the affected area.

Diet: Eat an organic, whole foods diet that emphasizes fresh fruits and vegetables and minimizes carbohydrates (avoiding refined carbohydrates and sugars altogether).

Flower Essences: Crab Apple.

Herbs: Combine equal parts of oat straw, St. John`s wort, and skullcap tinctures and take one teaspoon of this mixture four times a day. Peppermint oil applied topically can also help reduce pain, unless the skin is excessively dry, in which case it is contraindicated.

Homeopathy: Useful homeopathic remedies include Arsen alb., Rhus tox., Sepia, Natrum mur., Hepar sulph., Caladium, and Acidum nit.

Hydrotherapy: Hydrotherapy is the application of water, ice, steam and hot and cold temperatures to maintain and restore health. Treatments include full body immersion, steam baths, saunas, sitz baths, colonic irrigation and the application of hot and/or cold compresses. Hydrotherapy is effective for treating a wide range of conditions and can easily be used in the home as part of a self-care program. Many Naturopathic Physicians, Physical Therapists and Day Spas use Hydrotherapy as part of treatment.
*Purified water is essential for any hydrotherapy treatment. Remedies for Treating Chlorinated Bath Water offers clear instructions and recommendations.

Juice Therapy: Drink carrot and celery juice with one tablespoon of parsley juice once or twice each day.

Nutritional Supplementation: At the first sign of outbreak, apply zinc oxide along the path of the affected nerve area two to three times daily. Other helpful nutrients include L-lysine, vitamin B-complex, vitamin B12, BHT, calcium, and high doses of vitamin C plus bioflavonoids. Topical application of vitamin E can also be helpful. Snake vaccine made from venom has also been known to take away the pain of shingles.

Topical Treatment: Apply apple cider vinegar to the affected area.

Alternative Professional Care
If your symptoms persist despite the above measures, seek the help of a qualified health professional. The following professional care therapies have all been shown to be useful for treating shingles: Acupuncture, Biofeedback Training, Detoxification Therapy, Energy Medicine (Light Beam Generator, Ondamed, TENS), Magnetic Field Therapy, Naturopathic Medicine, Neural Therapy, Orthomolecular Medicine (Vitamin B12 injections combined with adenosine monophosphate), Oxygen Therapy (Hydrogen Peroxide Therapy, Ozone), and Reflexology.

Best of health to you

Carol asks…

whats the symptoms of shingles?

admin answers:

Symptoms
The first symptom of shingles is often extreme sensitivity or pain in a broad band on
one side of the body. The sensation can be itching, tingling, burning, constant aching, or deep, shooting, or “lightning bolt” pain.
Typically, 1-3 days after the pain starts, a rash with raised, red bumps and blisters erupts on the skin in the same distribution as the pain. They become pus-filled, then form scabs by 10-12 days.
Fever and chills
Headache
Upset stomach or abdominal pain
The rash disappears as the scabs fall off in the next 2-3 weeks, and scarring may result.

Mary asks…

Is is normal to have the pain of shingles on areas where there are no rashes?

Three days ago, I started feeling pain and numbness under my arm and then 2 itchy bumps appeared on my back, both on the left side of my body. The doctor said that there are no lumps on my underarm (as sign of breast cancer) but when she saw the rashes on my back, she said that I may have shingles.I read facts about it and I get confused that the pain that I have is not on the same area as that of my rashes. Is this normal w/ shingles? Now, I still am under observation, awaiting for the rashes to come out so I may be given the right medication. But the pain is progressing, there are stabbing, tingling pains around the left upper side of my body.I even have a little chest pain that occurs occasionally. What else should I expect to feel as an effect or symptom of shingles. Is it also possible to have several areas of the body to develop rashes or is it really on one area only?

admin answers:

The website shown below might answer some of your questions. Shingles pain is very mysterious. It is a nerve pain, and nerve pain can travel from one area of the body to another. Sometimes the nerve pain occurs before the rash shows up. And it often will last long after the rash is healed. I hope you can find appropriate treatment from your doctor. Good luck.

Your Questions About Shingles

Sharon asks…

What is the best medicine for lower back pain ??? Need help from a doctor?

i have tried almost everything. The one that works for me a little is Advil. is there anything stronger.

My back is sensative to the touch due to having Shingles 14 years ago. My Shingles after healing turned into Post Herapetic Neuralgia (nerve pain). Extremely painful all these years and nothing helps. I even tried the patches for pain and nothing. It feels like my back is swollen all the time.
i belong to the spa and exercised 3 times a week and nothing happened. i lost a little weight but the pain remained the same
No one can message it because its to painful to be touched. Been to theropy, chioropractor neithor one could touch me. only heating pads. I am in to much pain

admin answers:

If you keep taking the anti-inflammatory medicines, you are just blocking the body’s natural healing mechanisms. It will make you feel better in regard to pain, but will inhibit the healing process.

You may be suffering from a condition that is caused by antibiotics. If you took antibiotics for your shingles, you may have driven the germ deep into your tissue and it has raised it’s ugly head in this way. This is not atypical.

Most likely there is no drug or surgery that will solve this problem for you and so doctors are not going to be able to help you with this, if that is the case. Doctors are precluded, BY LAW, to only treat you with drugs or surgery.

The pain may be from swollen tissue due to biofilm protected infection. Biofilms are insidious sticky polysaccharide sacs that surround a bacteria or virus allowing the bacteria or virus to inject their poisons into the substrate free from macrophage attack in the body’s immune system response.

The pain is a result, not the underlying problem. If you keep trying to relieve the pain, only, you will most likely never break free from the problem. You need to address the real issue and that will eventually get rid of the pain.

There are many natural mechanisms in the body that can attack the problem, if you give it the right nutrients. If you are deficient, this will contribute to the problem. To become NOT nutrient deficient in America is not easy.

Bottom line is that you may have gotten rid of the symptoms of the Shingles, but now are dealing with the same bacteria or virus that caused the Shingles in the first place. Blue Green Algae does wonders for speeding up the healing process in getting rid of bacteria or virus that causes shingles.

Like many illnesses we get in life, the germs causing these illnesses are still resident in our bodies. Many cultures that promote fasting work to achieve what is called a “healing crisis” that flushes the body of these things. The fasts themselves do not do this, but in many cases the fasts lead to the “healing crisis.” When the healing crisis is achieved, the garbage is released and the person experiences symptoms of the diseases over a few hour period as the garbage leaves the body. This could be recognized as proof that the germs are still there in the body as we age.

The biggest problem happens when these germs are driven deep into the tissues and re-emerge 10 to 20 years later and are not recognized as a result of taking the antibiotics years earlier.

I would suggest you go to the source of nutrients that I’ve found to be the best in the World because there are no excipients in any of the products, they use grade 10 nutrients, and none of the products are “stand alone” nutrients, but matrices of co factors and all natural, once living sources, making them highly biologically active and have the same cell resonances as the body.

Www.healthline.cc (not .com)

I would order the following:

Blue Green Powder in capsule form — Take 6 to 12 of these per day

Allicidin — Take 8 of these per day

Betaine HCL — Take 2 to 4 of these AFTER each meal
Activator — Take 1 to 2 of these AFTER each meal
Quantum Digest — Take 2 DURING each meal
Probiotic — Take 2 in the a.m. And 2 in the p.m. Each day
Nucleotides — Take 8 of these per day
Oleuropin — Take 8 to 10 of these per day
Colostrum Powder — Take 1 heaping tsp. In the a.m & p.m.
DHLA — 2 tsps. Per day in water. — sip it throughout the day.

Max Stress B — start with 1/2 teaspoon in water or juice and sip it slowly. After the first day, increase it to 1 tsp. And then 1-1/2 tsp. And the 2 tsps. Per day. This will help greatly with the pain and you can stop this after a month or so if you continue to take the probiotics listed above.

All of the above is going to greatly improve your digestion and put nutrients to work for you. Your immune system will go into high gear and you should see a big difference in how you feel in days.

I know this seems like a lot of things to take, but in order to give your body what it needs, these things will boost your system in a way that you have not experienced. I would take the allicidin product for at least 2 months and the Betaine HCL, Activator, and digest for the rest of your life. This will assure you of good digestion and add about 30 – 35 years to your life expectancy due to the remethylation of your cells.

The DHLA will rid your body of ALL free radicals known and the reason for sipping it throughout the day is that it is used up by the body in about 45 minutes.

In regard to your diet, I would strong suggest you stay completely away from all overly high omega 6 fatty acid foods such as ALL vegetable oils, like Canola, Soybean, Cottonseed, and Corn oils. All these are being genetically engineered now and are causing many of the problems like you are having. These are very unstable polyunsaturated oils that convert to trans fats with a slight amount of heat and light. They inhibit the formation of many enzymes required by the body and are toxic to the body.

I would also purchase the “super food trio” from the same company listed above. This will help your overall nutrition as well.

Good luck

Why would I take neurontin for swelling and pain in my hand?

My right hand swells up well, engorges, really while I sleep. Only my right hand. My Dr. said it was not corpal tunnel. I was checked for blood clots. I am not diabetic nor do I have shingles. He gave me a compression glove to manage swelling, but when my hand starts to swell at night the pain gets excruciating when i have the glove on. so when I went back. to him he tried to get me Lyrica but my Ins. wouldnt pay.
So he prescribed Neurontin. One before bedtime. I took one last night and I am still Loopey. He didnt explain to me anything about the medicine. Is it a narcotic? How does it work? How would it help the swelling?

That stuff is horrible and has terrible side effects – get something different or get a different doctor.

Is it true Apple cider vinegar can cure Shingles?

I am having Shingles in my left leg and some area of my back.Pain is intolerable and responding so much with conventional medicine.I have heard that ‘Apple cider vinegar’ cures Shingles. Is it true?Have you or your friend tried? Can you share experience please?Thank you very much.
I am a diabetic too.
i have heard you can drink and also apply straight on the shingles and its gives instant relief but want to hear from ppl first.

admin answers:

I had shingles which remained undiagnosed for some time. I had so many spots they joined up.

About 8 of us had shingles in my village at the same time. No-one mentioned cider vinegar.

I suspect it’s a cure for the spots and the itching rather than the pain which is from the nerve. I used calamine lotion for the spots.

Your doctor may give you anti?viral drugs but they are not meant to be that effective once it’s broken out.

I also was given additional prescription pain meds (paracetamol and codeine) and some kind of anti-depressants. (which I never took).

You have my sympathy

Donna asks…

Does shingles leave scars?

Ok well i have shingles and im taking medicine so that it doesnt spread any further and i have 3 different types of medicines for the pain and such but my question is does it scar? yesterday was the first day that it really started to blister and i dont touch it and i barely move throughout the day because i dont want to make it worse so is there anything that can help it to not scar or any advice from someone who knows about it or has had it? thanks in advance šŸ™‚

admin answers:

Same as advice as for Chicken Pox. Don’t scratch or pick the scabs/spots or they could scar. Especially so if you have the shingles on your face.

Hope you get better soon.

David asks…

Can someone please tell the Food Network to get rid of Sandra Lee?

She’s not a cook – shes a drunk with a bunch of terrible shortcuts and tricks.
I think the Food Network does not have a “Tell Us” link because they’re afraid of all the negative remarks they might get about her Semi-home made show.

admin answers:

Lets replace her with Sara Lee!

Mary asks…

Who is the black male on food network grills?

I am looking for reference to a black male on Food Network that grills. I want to get a friend his book.

There is a guy who does only grilling out in his back yard. He has, like, 3 grills and does everything imaginable. His name is Robert Rainford. His show is “License To Grill”. You can Google his name to find his web site.

Your Questions About Shingles

Betty asks…

does herpes zoster turn in to hiv?

hi what does this mean? questions. My 27 years old friend has developed small rashes on the left side of the chest. He went to a dermatologist who diagnosed it as herpes zoster and it healed within a week. The doctor advised him get an HIV test done. My friend was shocked as he has never been sexually active, neither did he ever receive a blood transfusion. My friend then got Elisa HIV 1/2 test done fifteen days after developing the rash and the result was negative. Again after three months, he did Western Blot, ELISA- and the result was Sero Negative for HIV ½ . Then the doctor advised HIV RNA PCR and my friend also got this test done after four months of developing the skin rash. The result was again negative. Are these tests sufficient to declare that my friend is not infected with HIV? Why did my friend develop herpes zoster? Does herpes zoster result from HIV infection?
ANSWER.Herpes Zoster can occur in any individual who in the past has been exposed to chicken pox virus. This infection could have been clinical or subclinical. Therefore every case of herpes zoster can in no way be labeled as a case of AIDS or having HIV infection. The latter should be suspected only if the infection has been very severe and was difficult to treat. In most cases of HIV infection, sero-conversion occurs within 3 months of exposure; in an occasional unusual case it may take more than 6 months. Therefore, further testing is required only if clinical condition warrants. now my questions is what i need to know does herpes zoster cause hiv or aids the reason im asking beacuse i dont understand good english and the questions i asked i was reading about hiv zoster and i pop in to this questions and i saw this answer from i doctor i need some good details please

admin answers:

No, Herpes Zoster ( Shingles ), and HIV are two completely different viruses. I do not know why your friend’s physician advised that he get all of those tests. Perhaps there was some information in your friend’s medical history that made the doctor suggest HIV testing. However, that is sufficient proof to say that your friend does NOT have HIV.

Mandy asks…

what is the medicine for the herpes zoster?

It’s very painful, and valtrex is expensive.

admin answers:

Acyclovir is a generic anti viral very simular to valtrex. If you are in the US, it is on WalMart’s list of 4$ perscriptions

Paul asks…

Herpes Zoster Question…?

For Herpes Zoster, what is the…

1) Scientific Name?
2) Common Name?
3) Is it Viral or Bacterial?
4) Also, where is it found in the world?

Thanks so much!

admin answers:

Caused by varicella zoster virus
common name shingles
it is a virus
its found everywhere in the world, and happens when the chicken pox virus becomes re-activated in a particular nerve later in life.

Maria asks…

is there any differences between herpes and herpes zoster?

admin answers:

“Herpes” usually refers to the herpes simplex viruses, which cause oral and genital herpes.

The herpes viruses are actually a large group of viruses, including herpes simplex, varicella-zoster, cytomegalovirus, epstein-barr virus, and others.

Herpes zoster is when varicella-zoster virus (which causes chicken pox) is re-activated and causes shingles.

So “herpes” aka herpes simplex and zoster are different viruses in the same family.

Thomas asks…

Can it be herpes Zoster?

Hello I am a 20 year old who carries Genital herpes. But just about almost 2 weeks ago I started developing this rash like bumps on my stomach my side and a few on my back. At first I thought they were bed bugs. Then I was told it was chicken pox. I looked up info of both of them and I saw there Herpes Zoster or shingles. But for both Chicken pox and Herpes Zoster I dont have any symptoms like it tells me. I dont have fever I dont have pain. It just started by one little rash, it looked like small tiny bumps all together then another one and then another one until I end up with 20 of them I think. They are kind itchy. and I noticed that on some of them they are starting to peel off in the middle. Can somone please tell me what it could be? Im afraid it might have something to do with my Genital herpes or is it tru that ppl also get rashes when they have HIV? Please someone give me an answer asap

admin answers:

Herpes zooster is the virus that causes shingles and chicken pox. If you have had chicken pox when you were a child then you can develop shingles later in life. You’re also unlikely to get chicken pox again if you all ready contracted it.
Could be some irritation or an allergic reaction. Herpes can appear any where on the body but it’s not common to have it break out away from the mouth or genitals so I don’t think this has any thing to do with genital herpes.

Robert asks…

Who are the top 10 pitchers of all time?

Since I just asked about position players, let’s go with pitchers as well. For me it goes like this:
1) Walter Johnson
2) Roger Clemens
3) Bob Gibson
4) Warren Spahn
5) Cy Young
6) Pete Alexander
7) Steve Carlton
8) Tom Seaver
9) Lefty Grove
10) Christy Mathewson
I’m not 100% sure Nolan Ryan is a top 20 pitcher. Lots of strike outs, but the rest of his stats are pretty underwhelming. I would have Sandy Koufax at 11, just didn’t have enough longevity to cut it for me. No doubt he had the best 4 year run of anyone in league history though.

admin answers:

Mine
1) Walter Johnson
2) Christy Mathewson
3) Sandy Koufax (yes, I know the argument that I just made about Dimaggio will come into play here)
4) Roger Clemens
5) Greg Maddux
6) Bob Gibson
7) Warren Spahn
8) Lefty Grove
9) Cy Young
10) Pete Alexander

Much like the batting, I don’t believe that Nolan Ryan belongs in the argument on the top 10 pitchers, EVER.
His 7 no hitters were simply an amazing feat on 7 individual days. His 5714K’s, awesome too.
His near 2:1 K to walk ratio though, uhhhh.
His .526 winning %….. Uggghh
His # of Cy Youngs,…. Uggghhh
He walked more than 200 batters in a season on numerous occasions.
Greg Maddux sometimes walked less than 25. Ryan did not strikeout 8x the batters that Maddux did.

Charles asks…

Baseball cards? How much would they go for?

here are some of my better baseball cards:

ted williams:
bob gibson:
carl yastrzemski:
george sisler:
carlton fisk:
walter johnson:
willie McCovey:
Kirk Gibson:
cal ripken jr:
Mark McGwire 1984 U.S baseball team card

give me a price on each one ; like how much you think i could get for them.

admin answers:

You can’t price a card by just telling us what it is.. You’d have to consider the condition it’s in and if the card is rare or not. Plus, your descriptions are kind of vague. I’m sure their are several cars for these players. Your best bet would probably to take them to baseball card sellers and lets them tell you what their worth.

What is a fair value of a Roche Bobois $3115 dollar high end furniture?

How much can I deduct from a tenant for a high end glass art Roche Bobois table?
The rental apartment is a luxury apartment at the Ritz Carlton and the furniture also was listed as luxury and designer furniture. The tenant knew it. Table’s glass scupture base is broken and it is not fixable.
How much can I deduct fom the tenant’s security deposit.
This is not Bob;s furniture, it keeps the value. not as much as antiques but still it has some value.

admin answers:

That’s a high end complicated question, you will need to have the furniture valued by a professional, maybe it won’t cost you anything if you contact the seller and tell them about the damage and how old it is, they could give you fair estimate over the phone, and you could adjust the tenants security deposit accordingly.

Your Questions About Shingles

Mandy asks…

How often do thank GOD?

Ingratitude

“Although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.”

— Romans 1:21

A man who was nailing down a loose shingle on a roof lost his footing and began to slip. Working three stories above the ground, he was terrified at the thought of falling to his death. He started shouting, “God, help me! I am falling! God, do something!”

Just as he came to the edge of the roof, his belt loop caught on a nail and stopped him long enough to grab hold again. He shouted, “It’s OK, God! I got caught on a nail.”

That is how we can be. We cry out to God. He answers our prayers. Then we say, “It’s OK, God . . . everything seemed to work out.” But do we ever stop and think that God might have worked through certain circumstances to come to our rescue?

My point is, we need to put as much zeal in thanking God for what He has done as we put into pleading with God when we are in need.

I heard about a hospital chaplain who kept a record of some 2,000 patients whom he had visited, all who seemed to be in a dying condition and showed signs of repentance. Among those restored to health, he felt that only two showed a marked change in their spiritual lives after their recovery. In other words, when these people thought they would die, they repented. But when they recovered, they forgot about God.

What would you think of a person who always wanted things from you, but never offered a word of thanks in return? We can be that way with God, can’t we? Let’s remember to thank Him.

James asks…

Can mold make you sick? Is it possible that the water leaks we had during the summer are making us sick?

My fiance and I have been living in our apartment for about a year and a half now. Its a fairly new building (less than 5 years old), but there were what we now know to be water stains on the ceiling in the living room when we moved in. Last winter a blizzard blew some shingles and siding off the building and they didn’t fix it till the fall. We had water damage in our living room (a leaking ceiling with new water stains and the growth of an old one and a leak under/around the a/c which damaged the paint and drywall slightly from what we can see). I don’t even think anybody actually did take a look at the damage and if they did nothing got done. This happened before new management took over.

Anyways since this summer both my fiancƩ and I have been having health issues (mine are minor, his are severe).

My question is this. What are the possible health effects of mold and should we be really pushing the apartment people to fix this before we sign our new lease?
I’ll add a bit about the health issues we have been having.

For myself its been a slight worsening of regular allergies, a new severe allergy to minocycline (but I took textracycline no problem, i’m also allergic to amoxicillin), some chest congestion that doesnt seem to be going away, a bit of coughing once in awhile, a fungal skin infection i have had for a long time, some bumps under my arms that look like pimples (tetracycline didn’t work, and i was allergic to minocycline, so off to the derm I go), a bit of concentration issues, sleep issues.

As for my fiancƩ, his were worse. He had a kidney stone in october that was misdiagnosed at first in september. He ended up having to get it surgically removed. They put a stent in and he got an infection, was allergic to medicine they gave him. So they gave him a different thing.

He’s has some problems since then, with a heart arrythmia with chest pain, worsening of his poultry allergy, tired all the time, feels kinda icky lots.
He also has had a very severe reaction to a new asthma inhaler (same chemical as his old one, just different brand, He hardly uses it since hes mostly outgrown his asthma). He has always had allergies. Hes been having stomach pains again lately. Also is complaining of coughing once in awhile, his immune system is shot, his doctor thinks it might be chronic fatigue for lack of anything else. Is it at all possible these problems (or at least some of them) are due to possible mold in the apartment.

We clean regularily and he is a clean freak. Vaccum, wash floors with swiffer wet jet every week, clean bathroom, kitchen counters, coffee tables, wash towels floor rugs and sheets every week. We have a dog that we got this summer but that isn’t the issue because we both had dogs of the same breed before without being sick. Our dog also is having allergy problems we think.
Yeah we had dripping water from one spot in the ceiling for a day after the bad rainstorms and it poured in (soaked a towel in maybe 15 minutes) around the air conditioner, which was improperly installed in our apartment in the first place. Unfortunately the place was built crappy. Its still a lot better than a lot of places in the city and since the rental availability in the city is only at about 0.6% (since they have had a big boom here with lots of condo conversions without city council stopping them) and we have a dog, finding a new place to live would be hard. Especially since rents have gone through the roof here. Our rent has increased almost $300 in the last year and a half. That’s been the average here. Our 2 bedroom apartment is now renting for $1060. Renting a house would cost at least $1300/mo. Our apartment is in the area we like where there are few apartments (most have gone to condos) and the only open apartments don’t allow dogs or are rundown.
I actually used to live in a house with a seriously mold infested bathroom. Our place seems like spotless compared to that filthy pigsty. I never had allergies until I moved in there. I lived there for 2 years. they still haven’t fixed it maybe this summer they will fix it. It’s a family owned house.

Anyways, we can’t see any mold in the apartment, but we know there is water damage and I got to thinking we might have a mold problem after reading stuff online.

admin answers:

Okay, first let me tell you most mold, small mold, will not cause to many health issues. However, is this black mold? If it is, and alot, yes, this can effect your health. It seems you have a direct common theme with respitory, which can be by mold. Try getting a humidifier( think that’s how you spell it ). Also, you can whipe mold right off. Okay, now mold can be linked to certain auto immune disease. Of course any type of bad spores can cause problems. To me, if the place had mold and stains, why not get a new place. Really, not only for a new start, but for your piece of mind. The only thing i can say is maybe call and ask your local health department. Far as the stomach pain, mold is linked to auto-immune diseases, black mold. If you, your dog, and soon to be husband think it’s related to mold, why not call and ask a professional who deals with this. I personally gotten sick where their was mold in a house and moved. Was it just bad luck, who knows. However, As I studied later on in school, mold can have an effect on the immune system. Usually a small effect.

Daniel asks…

No Lease Was Sighned When I Rented Now I am being evicted!?

I live in a rent house in Virginia. There was no lease to sign at the time we moved in. We got behind on our rent 2 months because my husband took a pay cut. We did not get a 30 day written notice to leave. The landlord took out a unlawful detainer anyway and lied on the court paper that she had given written 30 day notice. The house when we moved in was suppose to get new sideing that has been 3 years ago the sideing is asbestos shingle sideing and the wireing is not up to code either. I had to call the Building Code Inspector out to the house he told me we had to move out right now the house was unfit to live in my kitchen floor is about to fall in we have told them of the problem they will not fix it. We have tried to give the back rent payed up and she refused to take the money what to do?

admin answers:

Move then sue.

Jenny asks…

What can I say about a company who will not take accountability?

Recently had a roof shingling job done with the roofer doing some eaves, etc… Roof is done and no complaints but where the contractor did work on the eaves all of a sudden I have raccoons ripping aapartmy fascia, etc… and the roofer is not accepting responsibility. After the pest control inspected the fascia was not reinforced which even a ssquirrelcan rip out. I want to make a sign to put on my car, what can I say so I can avoid being sued?

admin answers:

There is a process to follow if your not satisfied with the work. Ir appears that you have given the contractor a chance to repair the work that’s step one. Next go to smalls claims court and sue for damages. If you still can’t get satisfaction, contact the contractor’s licensing board and ding his license.

I would stay away from putting a sign on your car or in your yard.

Your Questions About Shingles

Nancy asks…

Have you had Shingles?!?

On the top of my right arm I have a rash it’s light pink with little spots starting to appear, my whole arm is aching and has been for a few days, the rash is very painful to touch. I get eczema but this rash is nothing like the kind I get from that or my allergies. I went on nhs direct website and they said its probably shingles (one of the girls I go to uni with has just had it too) but when I looked up the shingles rash mine doesn’t look like it. So I dunno if mines just the first stages. Does anyone have any advice on shingles? Have you had it? Should I go to the walk in at the hospital? x x

admin answers:

Every shingles case is different but uve looked into it so u may as well get it doubled check to help you both physical and mentally :D. My friend had it and it seems really closely similar and if someone at your uni had it the liklihood is increased more.
Because we cannot be there with u lol are you symptoms like this:
The first symptom of shingles is often over-sensitivity or a burning sensation on the skin. After a few days, a rash develops. It usually appears as a band, following the route of a nerve supply to the skin.

At first, the rash consists of small red spots and reddened skin in the same area. The spots then turn into small blisters, which dry up after a few days and gradually form scabs. Once the scabs have fallen off, a small pock-mark may be left.

Just get it checked out and sorted so you can be at ease and relax šŸ˜€

Good luck, hoep you feel better and Merry Christmas!

Robert asks…

Chickenpox from Shingles?

I know you can catch chickenpox (if you’ve never had them before) from someone who has shingles. My husband currently has shingles, but is in the scabbing stage, the rash first appeared about 14 days ago, I haven’t touched the rash, except when putting on the prescribed cream and wearing gloves and also using a cotton ball. But I have been in contact with HIM.

My question is, how long after being affected would the chickenpox appear? We are going on vacation in a week and I am worried I will have chickenpox!! Is there anything I can do to prevent it? (I had very few spots (less than 5) of the chickenpox rash when i was about 2 years old)
I have NOT had the vaccine, and as I stated, when I was right around 2 years old I developed less than five spots, while my older siblings had regular cases of them. So I was unsure if it would count since I was under two and had so few spots.

admin answers:

Have you had the vaccine for chicken pox called varicella? If you have been vaccinated then you have nothing to worry about. If you have actually had it in the past then you should also be fine. If you are unsure you can ask your parents about the incident when you were a child or call the doctor’s office and ask the front desk if they can look up whether you’ve been vaccinated.

_________________________________

The age you got it is irrelevant since no matter what age you are, you will still develop antibodies to protect yourself from being infected again. I looked it up and it seems like some cases of chickenpox only appear as a few bumps while others are covered over the whole body. It seems like you must have had it already and just not had the traditional symptoms.

Linda asks…

Chickenpox/Shingles during pregnancy?

My daughters childminder told me yesterday than one of the little boys in the group has just gone down with chickenpox. I know that it is extremely contagious in the early stages and my daughter would have been in contact with him.

Prob is that i’m 25 weeks preg and a bit concerned about it. Spoke to my mum and she thinks i’ve had chickenpox before but that i could re-activate virus and get shingles instead! I’m pretty sure shingles is bad news during preg. No symptoms on daughter yet but i’m not sure what to do?

Has anyone else had shingles in preg or know anything about it? Should i ask for my daughter to be immunised or something? Any advice?

admin answers:

The problem with chicken pox is that once the spots come out you aren’t contagious anymore, so if your daughter is going to get it from contact with this boy then she already has it.
I wouldn’t worry too much about your daughter getting, children are pretty resiliant and it is far better to have these things when you are young because the effects of these illnesses are almost always worse in adults. When I was in college a few years ago both myself and my close friend caught mumps, measles, scarlet fever and german measles in the space of a few month as they were ‘doing the rounds’ amongst the students. My aunt actually sent her two boys (aged 5 and 9) to my house in the hope that they would catch them from spending time around me to build up their immunity. They caught all four and were still running round like mad things, just very itchy!

‘Shingles during pregnancy can be serious. Pregnant women who get shingles or chicken pox have a higher than normal risk of developing pneumonia. In RARE cases, an unborn child exposed to varicella zoster (the chicken pox and shingles virus) can be damaged or may be miscarried in early stages. However this is much less likely with shingles.
Shingles can affect adults and children, but is much more common in older people. SHINGLES CANNOT BE TRIGGERED BY CONTACT WITH SOMEONE WHO HAS CHICKENPOX.’

Hope this helps put your mind at rest.

Carol asks…

I had shingles for a couple of days..I think i’m at the healing stage. My blister have pop and the fluids done?

drain out and now the scabs have came. Am i at the healing stage and am i still contagious??

admin answers:

Shingles is a form of herpes; be careful

Charles asks…

Travelling abroad with chicken pox/ shingles??

My boyfriend has just taken my daughter round to see his little sister who is in the early stages of chicken pox, neither my daughter who is 2 or my boyfriend who is 20 has had chicken pox. We’re going on holiday in 4 weeks to Spain, if either of them catch it, will we be forced to cancel our holiday? We are going to a family resort with Thomson and so I don’t think anyone would be pleased to have highly contagious chicken pox. If I cancel by Wednesday I’d get 50% of my money back. What should I do???

admin answers:

Incubation period for chicken pox is about 10 days, disease might last another 10 days of so from start to finish. If you are not due to go on holiday for 4 weeks unless either of them is unlucky, even if they are infected it might well be clear by then.
