Your Questions About Shingles

Helen asks…

shingles vaccine?

admin answers:

Most insurances including Medicare do not pay for Shingles vaccine.

However, that is showing up in the older population over 65 even though in their younger years they have received inoculations of small pox vaccine.

This is a serious problem, I know an individual who is 74 and had to fight off the attack of shingles. It disabled him for nearly two months.

There is no way to determine ones susceptibility to getting shingles and therein lies the problem if one should get the expensive shot or not. There is no way to tell. Most people simply take the risk.

Carol asks…

Where can you get the Shingles Vaccine?

Hi
I would like to know where to get the new Shingles Vaccine in Saint Louis, MO 63129 area.

admin answers:

There is NO Shingles Vaccine. It is a regular Chicken Pox Vaccine and you can get it at almost ANY doctor’s office.

Michael asks…

Will you get the new shingles vaccine?

The FDA just approved the the new shingles vaccine. Will you get it?

admin answers:

Absolutely not. I have zero faith in vaccine theory, as far as I’m concerned, vaccines are a huge hoax.

Paul asks…

for anyone who has had chicken pox, are you taking the shingles vaccine?

I’ve seen firsthand the pain and mysery that comes from shingles, so I’m hoping everyone will take the vaccine.
I don’t know if there are any side effects to the shot, I’m sure you Dr. can tell you. My dad has been in mysery for 3 years, though, and shingles has ruined his life.

admin answers:

I found this fact sheet on the internet:

http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/vis/downloads/vis-shingles.pdf

Daniel asks…

Is Shingles vaccine safe if you haven’t had chickenpox?

I don’t know if I had chickenpox. I remember measles, but no one is around now to tell me if I ever had chickenpox. Was raised in an orphanage so it is likely I did, but the medical records were lost in fire. Should I get the shingles vaccine?

admin answers:

Yes you should there is no danger in getting the shingles vaccine if you have had the chicken pox or not had it. There is no medical complications involved.

Your Questions About Shingles

Ruth asks…

chimney problem…what can i use to fill void between chimney and shingles?

if you take a look at the pictures i have you can see that wood trim is place between the house and the shingles to fill the void. is this standard practice or can i use something better to fill it?
http://photobucket.com/chimney

admin answers:

Wood trim is a pretty standard way to cover the gap. Be sure the chimney is securely anchored to the house. Use pressure treated or cedar, and fill the gap LOOSELY with fiberglass insulation or expanding foam (Great Stuff). Prime the back side of the wood with a good quality primer, then install with concrete nails or screws (Tapcons). Fill the heads of the screws or nails, prime, and paint to match. Good luck.

Chris asks…

is this a spider bite, shingles or flesh eating bacteria or virus?

I have a spot on my lower abdomin, it is a raised spot that looks like a puss pocket white and purple with the surrounding area that is red. It is not hard but soft and tender to the touch, and also feels warm. I’m wondering if it could be a spider bite, shingles or flesh eating virus or bacteria.
Does anyone know of a site that might have pictures of these conditions that I might be able to compare it to? Thanks

admin answers:

Check out www.webmd.com you should be able to find out what you need there. Also by what you are saying about it, it could be an ingrown hair too it will look like a pimple with white and red around it if it is infective. Place a worm face cloth on it and then after a while but some Antibiotic ointments on it that should do the trick.
Also check out the site www.faimlydoctor.org 2

Mary asks…

how do i determine the quanity of ceder shingles needed.?

A ranch house is to be covered with cedar shingles. The house has been determined that the sheathing requires 40 sheets for the walls. 4 sheets to cover the lower trimming and 7 sheets are needed for the gable ends. This means that the whole house requires 51 sheets. This house has two entry doors, a picture window, and nine average-size windows. Determine the quantity of cedar shingles needed for the siding.

admin answers:

You seem to have answered this question already, in your information given!! The “walls” would be where the “siding” goes, and they need 40 sheets – the others are just for the trim.

William asks…

Does this look like shingles (picture included)?

http://tinypic.com/r/9k6xlf/3

A can only remember back to a couple days ago when I felt a bit of an itch on my shoulder. I scratched it once or twice. I didnt think twice about it. Then, this morning I peaked at it and found this. It is only on my right shoulder. It doesnt itch very much. I havent scratched it all day. I am 20 years old and consider myself healthy (I go to the gym often). although I can be considered underweight. I have had shingles before. That’s why I am worried now.
Does it look like shingles?
Also, What would happen if I ignored shingles and didnt take antivirals? Will it go away on its own?
Category

admin answers:

It could be shingles I have shingles right now and that almost looks like it but i hav many more bumps than that. If more bumps start forming and you start feeling tingling, sharp pain, a burning sensation on that spot it may be shingles. Many people go through shngles and dont take anti viral pills. Anti viral pills are only effective if you catch it within 72 hours of your first symptoms. So if its to late you may as well for get about it. Make sure you dont sscratch that spot, or touch it. It could be many things, hopefully it isn’t shingles, or it could be a while before it goes away. Definetely see a doctor as soon as you can.

Lisa asks…

I had chicken pox when i was young. Now I found out i have shingles.?

I saw picture of shingles and it looks same as i have. How can this be treated?and cause of getting shingles?I’ve been having too much stress so far and Had big fight with landlord and my mother in law.Can stress cause the shingles?

admin answers:

It usually happens in infants or the elderly but stress and lack of sleep can cause shingles in younger people who’ve had chicken pox before.
You definitely need to go to a dermatologist ASAP. They will probably prescribe you Valtrex (shingles is some form of the herpes virus). You would take it for a week 3 times a day. Catching it early can help clear it up quicker and hopefully prevent the chronic pain that can occur from nerve damage.
Make sure you are getting lots of sleep right now and just talk to your doctor.

Your Questions About Shingles

John asks…

Need some help please?

I am currently 23 weeks pregnant with my first child. I work a very demanding job as a Certified Nursing Assistant in a Nursing home. I’ve had all sorts of back issues with this pregnancy i was even restricted to a 20 pound lift. My work responded with removing me from the schedule until i had the restrictions removed completely, they even knew my husband wasn’t working so i had no choice. Now i’m getting further along in my pregnancy and more cautious with what i do and how much i lift. They continue to attempt to get me to do 50 pounds or more lifts and i complain about it until they move me. I’ve already had a few small contractions because they made me work 7 days in a row. They are making it out like i am lazy and don’t do my job. They also send me into rooms with infectious disease and don’t bother to warn me half the time before i do (things like MRSA, C-DIF, Shingles, Scabies, etc). I don’t know what to do i am beside myself with all of this i only want to protect my baby i’m not trying to be lazy. And i know what they did with my restriction was illegal but what can i do. Can any of you give me advice its like they want me to lose my child or hurt myself. I’m going out of my mind.
The thing is i’d love to quit and go somewhere else but my health insurance is through them and its great insurance. Nothing like feeling trapped.

admin answers:

I’d do several things:

1-report your work..there must be some one they answer to…some nursing board etc or even a government agency on work related complaints. This is ESSENTIAL or they’ll do what they’ve done to you to other people. It is NOT ok.

If nothing changes i’d

2—I know it sounds really hard, but i’d quit. Your baby’s health is the number one priority. You can get another job in a nursing home. I wouldn’t risk losing the baby to injury or disease. There are agencies you can apply to for assistance to help financially.

3–I’m not sure why he’s not..but you could try encouraging your husband to get a job. Even if it’s just while you’re unable to.

Good luck sister!

Your Questions About Shingles

Sandra asks…

Can shingles rash spread to other parts of body by touching?

admin answers:

No, Shingles rash probably cannot spread on the infected person by touching. But Shingles is contagious for others who never had Chicken Pox and who never have been vaccinated against Chicken Pox.

Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes Chicken Pox. The virus stays dormant in nerve cells of people who have had Chicken Pox in the past. And often due to decreased immunity, this virus reactivates, travels inside the nerve cells and causes the Shingles rash on the skin.

But the person with Shingles still has some immunity against this virus. Which prevents the virus from spreading in other ways besides through the nerve cells.

William asks…

With shingles, how long will the pain stay after the rash has healed?

I was diagnosed with shingles about 3 weeks ago. The rash on my ribcage is starting to heal up, but since it started to heal the pain has increased loads!

I was under the impression when the rash healed up, it was all over and I wouldn’t be in pain anymore. Does anyone who’s had shingles know how long it will be before the pain goes away?

admin answers:

I am sorry to tell you that it can be a while before the pain goes away. If the pain has increased though, go back to your doctor, because they will treat you for the pain until it is under control. These links may help.

Paul asks…

Can a “shingles” like rash and strep throat and a cough be associated with swine flu?

Like most everyone, I am very concerned and interested in the swine flu outbreak. An 18 year old boy i know is currently suffereing through what the doctor though was shingles and strep throat and a cough, could this have anything to do with swine flu? he is going to school and going about his daily activities like usual because the doctor said his type of strep is not contagious, could this be swine flu?

admin answers:

Strep is caused by bacteria. Swine flu is caused by a virus. If he had shingles, which is caused by a form of the chickenpox virus, his immune system isn’t working at its peak and he may be more susceptible to catching all kinds of things.

Carol asks…

I have a red rash under my left breast, could I have shingles in that area?

I noticed a red rash area under my left breast, it burns, but no pain. I thought it might be from perspiring, but it’s been cool out. Can you get shingles under the breast? Yes, I have had chicken pox before. I am 67 years old.

admin answers:

I do not think that shingles presents itself with a burning sensation. It is a deep nerve pain, but it can start out feeling like a spider bite. Unless you have the terrible pain, it probably isn’ts shingles, although the fact that the rash is only on one side is shingle-like.

If your immune system has been suppressed from lack of sleep, a cold, or anything else, then shingles might be a possibility, but it usually does not flare under normal conditions.

Your Questions About Shingles

Sharon asks…

shingles symptoms anyone ?..19 yrs old?

Ok on my left hip i have two red bumps really itchy they look like hives now i have another two on my belly a bit to the right in the middle. Sounds really weird but when i scratch or rub the ones on my belly my right leg goes tingly ? and the right side of my back is killing me whenever i breathe out or move. i am going to the doc tomorrow but would like to have an idea.. my mum did have shingles two weeks ago that could be it but i never catch flus or anything like that . i have looked up about it on google and everything but would like a proper opinion. Thank You

admin answers:

I just got over a bout of Shingles – for me they presented only on my Right Arm.

Before seeing any bumps, I had pain that felt like it was along the bone of the arm (it’s actually the nerve – but that’s what it felt like)

Like what you are describing, scratching them caused a pain that seemed to shoot from the sore down into the body, and all along the affected area.

The doc should be able to tell you for sure – and the medication worked really well. One other random thing that I found on the internet which helped the sores to heal was taking a paper towel soaked with Apple Vinegar and holding it against the area where I had the sores for a while. I did that 2-3 times a day for each of the areas where I had breakouts, and it helped to keep the ‘new’ ones from getting all big and open.

symptoms for internal shingles?

admin answers:

Here is a link for shingles..

Helen asks…

Do you have to be of a certain age in order to contract ‘shingles’?

My father has had it several times. My son is ten and is showing some symptoms of what could be shingles.

admin answers:

No you do not need to be old to get shingles. It is a recurrence of the chicken pox virus in the nerves so all you need to be is a person who has previously had chicken pox to get shingles.

Your son may well have shingles if he ever had chicken pox. Is there a pattern to the blisters? At his ribs? Or his head? The virus tends to follow the path of a nerve. It is very painful so get your son checked out.

William asks…

What does shingles feel like really?

I’ve got flu like symptoms, but my lower back is killing me so is my legs but i’ve got a God awful rotten taste in my mouth. This may sound daft but it tastes like artificial spray snow, those cans of spray snow you use for frosting your windows at christmas time. Its horrible acrid and just nasty. If the flu symptoms and the rotten taste in your mouth indicative of Shingles?

admin answers:

Shingles can only occur if you’ve already had chicken pox. This is because it is the same virus which is reactivated (usually by stress, immunocompromised states).

Shingles is characterised by a dermatomal distribution of pain. This bascially means it affects a strip of your skin. There is usually pain in this area before you get the ‘spots’. Shingles most commonly affects you chest area or a region of your face.

The only definitive thing I can say is that if you’ve never had chickenpox you can’t have shingles. My advice would be to visit your doctor/dermatologist who are most qualified to make a decision.

Hope that helps.

Richard asks…

what is shingles is it catching what are the symptoms?

i have spots round my middle a nurse said they arent in right place for shingles but now i am itching on my stomach too.she said they were probably bites.

admin answers:

Shingles is a viral infection of the herpes family-Chicken pox actually. Chances are if you are a healthy person, especially if you had chicken pox when you were younger you have absolutely NOTHING to worry about. It usually affects people who are severely undernourished or immune compromised such as old age, HIV, Hep C, Tuberculosis, etc. Vulnerability also may be stress related. Yes it is communicable (passed on) by touching the open pustules and not washing your hands thoroughly. You should be wearing gloves and paper gown if you are going to be in contact with fluid from those pustules. If not, Use good hand-washing and avoid hugging your loved one-because they are painful as well as contagious.

Your Questions About Shingles

Maria asks…

Shingles after pain, its almost christmas :(?

my dad has been in pain for over a week.
It all started off with a head ache on the left side of his forehead for an entire week. Then the next week, he started getting huge lumps above his eyebrows but didn’t have any pain. we went to the walk-in-clinic that night to check out what it was and the doctor said it was nothing, just take tylenol. The next day he had blisters popping out and my mom took him to the hospital. The blisters and scabs are gone since last week, hes been in pain with shingles for about 3 to 4 weeks now, and hes healed but he has horrible pain in the left side of his face where his shingles were.
Do you know any home remedies to help the nerves ease the pain? Its almost christmas and hes feeling horrible. hes already on oxycontin and its not working, hes on sleeping meds, it doesn’t work, hes been on plently of medications for his shingles and now I was wondering if anything else would help him?

admin answers:

Amanda, First let me say my thoughts and prayers go out to your father. I had shingles a couple years ago and I have never been in that much pain. And you have to consider I have broken my neck 2 times and destroyed my rotater(sp) cuff and shattered my shoulder,,and did not feel in as much pain as what I had with Shingles.
You might have dad call his doctor to increase the strength of his oxycontin or change pain meds to a stronger type and see if they will let him use it more frequently. When I had shingles one thing that did help just a bit, is to take oatmeal soaks in warm water several times a day. With it being on his face maybe warm soaks with a warm towel. My mom said apple cider vinegar pulled the pain out of her shingles.
If he is wanting a home remedy I often call my local health food store when I want to use all natural rememdies, The are usually more than happy at a good health food store, to give you all the information you would want…God Bless Reggie

Mary asks…

can i take beta blockers & pain killers at same time?

i have shingles & i take beta blockers for migrain, can i take pain medication as well for shingles

admin answers:

If you are having migraines try this to get relief from them. Between the two of them you should be able to find relief from the migraines.
For your neck:
place your hand alongside your head and push your thumb in under your ear and place it on the muscle there. Take your fingers and place them on the back of your neck on the muscles there. Press them together and hold a good amount of pressure on them. Then relax, take a deep breath and exhale and don’t tense up any part of your body. After about 30 seconds the release should be happening, the muscle going limp under the pressure. Continue to hold until the entire muscle has gone limp.
Back:
Place your left (or right, which ever the case may be) hand on your left knee. Place your right hand over your left shoulder and with your fingertips find the muscle next to your spine. Press on it and hold. Relax, take a deep breath and exhale and don’t tense up any part of your body. After about 30 seconds there should be a release happening and when it does slowly lower yourself forward onto your right leg or even over it if you can, the more over the better it is. Continue holding for a total of one minute. Then release but rest your body there for one minute longer. Then reverse and do the other side.

William asks…

change in medication for shingles?

I’m back! More shingles questions. I read everyone’s here and the answers have helped. I have the nerve pain from my facial shingles, that goes down my neck and shoulder. Burns badly. My internist changed my medicine from Neurontin to Lyrica today. Also, I have a stronger creme, Capsaizin (not the over the counter one, a stronger one). I just put it on, so we’ll see. Anyone have experience with Lyrica as opposed to Neurontin? I am getting better, but now the real nerve type pain.
yanksgirl

admin answers:

Lyrica is quite good. Both drugs share a similar mechanism of action but it is more potent than Neurontin so it achieves efficacy at lower doses. Thanks that you are getting better and hope to keep you getting better.

Robert asks…

Is shingles supposed to be so painful? I got it all over my left rib cage and top of my breast?

Doctor prescribed medication for the virus and said it would take at least 2 weeks to heal but I am in excruciating pain and pain medication does not help. Is it normal to be so very painful?

admin answers:

Yes it can be painfull i had it on my back couldnt sleep. You should just try to relax i was told it can be due to stress. Very itchy too try not to scratch it will leave you scars. Maybe he can give you stronger medication.

Susan asks…

Your Questions About Shingles

Chris asks…

is it possible to have both Herpes simplex, and Herpes zoster.?

I used to get it around my mouth infact my last outbreak was like 2-3 months ago and it was the first outbreak in about a year…now i have shingles near my belly botton and all around my lower back.

Herpes simplex
Herpes zoster.

how can i prevent this from happening agian once its gone,

-what should i eat
– how should i live
????

admin answers:

While both viruses belong to the same family, they are not the same virus. So yes, you can have both at the same time. In fact, you have been harboring the chicken pox virus- the herpes zoster, since you had chicken pox. There are antiviral medications that can help supress both virus outbreaks, although no medication will completely keep you outbreak free. Both are usually triggered by stress, chronically being overtired, and poor nutrition is also thought to play a part. Aside from eating well, and basically practicing healthy living habits, there isn’t anything else you can do. If you ask the doctor, he/she can recommend some over the counter cold sore treatments to start the moment you feel or notice one breaking out. If you are getting treatment for the shingles outbreak, the same medications that supress it should help with the cold sore. At the moment you have broken out with both because the immune system is under attack from the herpes zoster and the herpes simplex is taking advantage of the situation. They work that way. Not nice, I know. I’m sorry to hear you are suffering outbreaks of both simultaneously and I hope you are able to find some relief from both fairly quickly.

Laura asks…

Is there a strap-on heat pack that you can wear under clothes?

My Grandmother has Herpes Zoster (shingles) and she has awful pain in her back. A hot water bottle relieves her a bit, but are there any heat packs that you can strap on?

admin answers:

Consider Thermacare wraps — they come in a variety of styles, one that wraps around and connects with velcro. I have used them for lower back pain and they are great. The website is at http://www.thermacare.com/
They are one-time use, and they get quite warm so your Grandmother may not want to apply them to bare skin — perhaps she should have a t-shirt or equivalent. They last about 8 hours. You can buy them at most any drug store (in the US).

Charles asks…

what is the history of shingles?

I need to know the history of the shingles virus (herpes zoster)
Things like the first case, when first discovered, how they named it, panademics, and more would be great! I need a reference for each piece of information!!
IT CAN NOT BE A .COM WEBISTE!!!!!

thanks so much!

admin answers:

Please call it herpes zoster. Herpes zoster infections have been around for a very long time and until the late 18th century were thought to be the same as smallpox. In 1888, it was suggested by Dr. James von Bokay that chickenpox and herpes zoster were due to the same causal agent. It was not until Dr. Thomas H. Weller and Dr. Marguerite Stoddard isolated the virus both from chickenpox and zoster and compared the viruses that this connection was confirmed: chickenpox and herpes zoster were indeed due to the same virus. I very much doubt that the first confirmed case was identified by name.

Could doing shrooms cause shingles?

Recently I tried magic mushrooms and a couple days later, I was diagnosed with shingles (herpes zoster) around my eye. I was wondering if their could be any correlation between the two?

admin answers:

About chickenpox and shingles
Chickenpox is very common in children, and it tends to only cause mild illness (for more information see Related topics). Once you have had chickenpox, you usually become immune to it for life, although on rare occasions people can catch it again.

However, after you have had chickenpox, the varicella zoster virus remains in nerve cells in your spinal cord for life.

Your Questions About Shingles

Paul asks…

Question about shingles?

I know Shingles comes from the same virus as Chicken Pox and can lay dormant for years then cause shingles. I know there is now a vaccine.

My question is, I know the nerve that is normally infected is around the side and by the ribcage, I can’t think of the name of the nerve. But I have known people who had shingles other places, their face, legs, etc.

You can only get Chicken Pox once, but later get Shingles. Can you get Shingles more than once, in different nerves, or is one infection all you can get?

admin answers:

Shingles (herpes zoster) is a viral infection of the nerve roots. It causes pain and often causes a rash on one side of the body, the left or right. The rash appears in a band, a strip, or a small area. Shingles is most common in older adults and people who have weak immune systems because of stress, injury, certain medicines, or other reasons. Most people who get shingles will get better and will not get it again.Shingles occurs when the virus that causes chickenpox starts up again in your body. After you get better from chickenpox, the virus ”sleeps” (is dormant) in your nerve roots. In some people, it stays dormant forever. In others, the virus “wakes up” when disease, stress, or aging weakens the immune system. It is not clear why this happens. But after the virus becomes active again, it can only cause shingles, not chickenpox.

You can’t catch shingles from someone else who has shingles. There is no cure for shingles, but treatment may help you get well sooner and prevent other problems. Call your doctor as soon as you think you may have shingles. The sooner you start treatment, the better it works. Treatment may include:

* Antiviral medicines, sometimes given with steroid medicines, to help you get well sooner and feel less pain.
* Medicines to help long-term pain. These include antidepressants, pain medicines, and skin creams.

Good home care can help you feel better faster. Take care of any skin sores, and keep them clean. Take your medicines as directed. And use over-the-counter pain medicines to relieve pain.

Avoid contact with people until the rash heals. While you have shingles, you can spread chickenpox to people who have never had chickenpox. Be extra careful to avoid people with weak immune systems and pregnant women and babies who have never had chickenpox.

Carol asks…

Herpes zoster, shingles?

Hey. I’m a 20 year old, healthy? woman. I noticed a red rash on the right side of my torso a few days ago and about 5 blisters developing on the area little later. I went to see a doctor and he told me I have shingles. I got antibiotics and some gel to put on it. The area wasn’t hurting before, but it’s starting to get sore now. Anyways, a few questions I didn’t think to ask the doctor..

While googling this condition, the word HIV comes up alot.. If my shingles was a symptom of HIV, how quick does it usually appear? If I decided to get tested, what’s the best time to do it, 3 or 6 weeks after possible time of getting infected?

I heard/read that stress and hard working out can cause shingles.. Has this happened to you? I just got back to my homecountry from a trip, and at the airport coming back I had to carry a heavy bag for 5 hours, do alot of walking and stress about connecting flights.

How long has it taken to get rid of shingles (with antibiotics)? If you had it, did you go to work normally or get some time off’? Will this condition affect animals I’m around?

Thank you for all responses.

admin answers:

Yes i took about two days off work before the blisters started popping, it was so painful. Got was laid off at the time and honestly thankful because i dont think i could have gone back to work. The dr told me it takes from 6 to 8 weeks to heal.. But it took me 4 weeks for the severe pain to go away. The dr gave me valtrex and it helped my system in clearing it faster. I dont know if it affects animals but the dr told me u can give kids chicken pox. The dr also told me that is due to stress and that i will have it for the rest of my life. Betty asks…

help and information on shingles please?

hey,
i understand it travels along a nerve and will not spread further than that nerve
but i am wondering that if i touch shingle sores and then touch another part of my body can shingles spread to there?

also i am mostly concerned that if i touch a sore and then my eye can that cause shingles to infect the eye?

i have looked at a few sites so i know what shingles is and how its treated, in addition to medication im drinking green tea as it is said to have antiviral benefits and the high levels of antioxidants, also am taking 250mg of vit C and trying to eat garlic when i can.
so i only really need information on the above questions about it been transmitted to my eye or other part of my body through touching sores.

cheers
of course other information is welcome to help as well.
daniel did you read my question at all? thank you for replying but didnt really relate to teh questions i asked,
i explained i have done research and know how they start and what it is.
i know once you have had chicken pox the virus lays dorment in your spine colom until either stress or ur immume system is compromised, in which then it follows a nerve to where is gives off pain for a few days prior to a rash which then gets blistery and in about 2 weeks will become a scab and then begin to heal.
it is only contagious while the blisters are wet, even so you cannot catch shingles it can be passed to people who have not had chicken pox which it then develops as chicken pox not shingles.

i would like answers relating to if it can be spread through me touching a sore then my eye,
and if there is anything in addition to taking Vit C, green tea and garlic.
thanks anne well it is above my eye on my forehead and on my eye lid, i have not yet seen a eye speciallist about it, which i know should be done, i am concerned that the sores will weep and flow into my eyes mainly while i am asleep.

admin answers:

Shingles is a mutated virus from the chickenpox virus. Once you catch a virus, you can never get rid of it. A virus, unlike a bacteria, is smaller than the size of the hole in a cell wall so it hides inside the cell attaching itself to the cell wall and goes dormant. There it forms a hard shell around itself for protection and starts mutating into a slightly different virus whereby it waits until your body becomes weak or stressed and then comes out as a new form of that older virus. Nevertheless, if you haven’t previously had chickenpox, you can catch it from somebody who has shingles.

Garlic is effective and works great against viruses but it works best if you catch the virus in its earliest stages. The first symptoms of a virus are usually headaches so start taking a large clove of garlic in juice with a banana mixed up in a blender three times a day at the first sign of a virus headache.

Exercise is also effective against viruses as it strengthens the immune system. Deep breathing exercises are important to keep moisture out of your lungs so you won’t come down with pneumonia. Inhaling deeply through your nose and exhaliing through your mouth while you exercise will keep the moisture out of your lungs. If you don’t have moisture in your lungs, you can’t get pneumonia. 70,000 people die needlessly each year in the US from complications of pneumonia because they fail to keep the moisture out of their lungs when they get sick from something else.

Flax seed and salmon are high in omega fatty acids which stimulate white blood cell production so that you will have more white blood cells to fight off a virus.

Garlic, omega fatty acids, and exercise work the best with viruses so keep exercising and be sure to do proper deep breathing to protect yourself from pneumonia.

Donald asks…

i noticed on my roof that along every roof joist the shingles are cracked. what could cause this?

before i re roof my house i want to solve the issue of the shingles cracking along every roof joist. the shingles are 20 years old. the deck boards are 1/2 inch plywood and are staggard when laid. i have soffetts and roof ridge vent. why would have cracking?

admin answers:

If all you have for a roof sheathing is 20 year old 1/2″ plywood you need more than shingles…….like a new roof of at least 3/4 inch….the cracking in the shingles is from the old ply failing, sagging, moving around; nails pulling through, butt joints of two sheet edges on the rafters moving, etc etc etc.

Michael asks…

Raw Milk, Beneficial to health or is it dangerous?

Alot of confusion regarding raw milk.
I want to drink raw organic milk from grass fed cows, at a local farm. I have heard it is very healthy, and can help with some of my health problems. Anyone try it, and does it cause Shingles and infections ect.?
I understand that there are different levels of organic certification in the UK. What evidence should i ask the farmer about organic certificates? Anything else that i should ask/investigate before drinking raw milk?

admin answers:

There was an experiment done about the benefits of enzymes and raw food versus cooked food. This experiment was done by Dr. Francis Pottenger.
I also did a paper about raw and pasteurized milk and what i learned shocked and disappointed me. At the very least if i cannot get raw milk i will drink the organic pasterized milk.
I learned that milk is a good sorce of calcium but only if it is an organic form meaning in it’s natural state. When heat is applied to milk as in pastuerization it then becomes inorganic and the molecular structure has changed and it is not recognized by the body, so the body does not know what to do with it in this form. So in essence, milk that is pasteurized has most of the good stuff missing and destroyed before you drink it and whats even worse is that under the conditions that it is produced(hormones, mass production). This is about Dr. Francis Pottenger.
He was the original research physician in nutrition. In the early 1930’s, he conducted what was to become a famous study of cats. Here is one account of the results:

There’s one more study I want to bring to your attention and it’s called the Pottenger cats study and it lasted for ten years, with three generations of cats being studied. Approximately 900 cats were involved. Dr. Francis Pottenger took 2 sets of cats and fed them only raw milk and raw meat. He took 3 more sets of cats and fed them cooked meat and pasteurized milk. This study was specifically designed to show the difference between eating raw foods versus cooked and processed foods over a long period of time. The cats eating the raw food were disease free and healthy, generation after generation after generation. But, the cats eating the cooked and processed foods had different results. By the end of the 1st generation the cats started to develop degenerative diseases and became quite lazy. By the end of the 2nd generation the cats had developed degenerative diseases by mid-life and started losing their coordination. By the end of the 3rd generation the cats eating the cooked foods had developed degenerative diseases very early in life and some were born blind and weak and had a much shorter life span. Many of the third generation cats couldn’t even produce offspring.

This is from a Website whose name I appreciate: thehealthnuts.net. For a more detailed account of this experiment, visit the lifestar site.

Carol asks…

Who is the best pitcher of All-Time?

We all know that Babe Ruth is an easy win at best player, but there are plenty astonishing pitchers out there.
(A) Nolan Ryan
(B) Warren Spahn
(C) Bob Gibson
(D) Steve Carlton
(E) Bob Feller
(F) Cy Young
(G) Lefty Grove
(H) Sandy Koufax
(I) Christy Mathewson
(J) Walter Johnson
(K) Tom Seaver
(L) Other (please list player)
Just to name a few. So which won is the best out of these great pitchers? Support your answer, and the most convincing answer will be picked as best.

admin answers:

Probably Walter Johnson in terms of on-field accomplishments in the context of a player’s particular time period.

The top 4 all time in when taking into account a pitcher’s effectiveness per game and the length of their careers would probably rank Johnson, Grove, Grover Cleveland Alexander and Cy Young as the top 4 pitchers of all time.

In comparing these guys, Grove was more effective per inning pitched, but Johnson’s career was much longer. Young was a little below Johnson’s level of effectiveness per inning pitched, but Young’s career was much longer. Alexander was also better than Johnson on an inning-per-inning basis, but his career wasn’t nearly as long.

Christy Mathewson was probably the 4th best pitcher of his generation, behind Johnson, Alexander and Young. Mathewson had only one season (1905) in which he was the best pitcher in baseball, plus he had about 3 other seaons in which he was the best NL pitcher, but not as good as the best AL pitcher. And Mathewson was certainly never the equal of Walter Johnson.

If I was going to rate the pitchers you listed in order, I’d rank them:

1) Walter Johnson
2) Lefty Grove
3) Cy Young
4) Warren Spahn
5) Tom Seaver
6) Christy Mathewson
7) Bob Gibson
8) Sandy Koufax
9) Bob Feller
10) Steve Carlton
11) Nolan Ryan

I’d also throw in Alexander, Carl Hubbell, Robin Roberts and Greg Maddux to round out a top 15 (I’d leave out Roger Clemens because of his use of PEDs) I’d rank Alexander about 3rd on this list, behind Johnson and Grove.

Robin Roberts is very underrated, mostly because he had several years as the best pitcher in baseball, but that was just prior to the creation of the Cy Young award. The Cy Young award started at about the time when Young died in the mid 1950s. Had he died a few years earlier, they would have started the award sooner, and Roberts would have won it several times. But hey, that’s life.

Not that Roberts would be considered the best pitcher ever today had the Cy Young award existed earlier, but he would be regarded much more highly than he has been without having the Cy Young awards to show for it.

In reality, Satchel Page was probably the greatest pitcher ever if Walter Johnson wasn’t. I think it’s between those two.

I like your choices though…a nice mixture of recent players and old timers.

I asked it.

admin answers:

Which site had this?

But I think Koufax is the best pitcher ever. I doubt people would pick anyone over him to start the most important games.

All of these pitchers were great, and in different times. But the list is missing Pedro Martinez, he had a few of the best seasons ever.

Your Questions About Shingles

Chris asks…

If I’ve had the Varicella vaccine, can I be around someone with shingles?

I’ve never had chickenpox, but I have had the Varicella (chickenpox) vaccine. I got the vaccine when it was first developed (’95) but I have only had one dose of it, which according to the CDC, means I have not established immunity.

I want to spend Easter with my husband’s family but my mother-in-law got Shingles a few weeks ago. Even though her doctor said she was not contagious and can return to work this Wednesday, she still has a rash.

Would it be safe to be with her this upcoming weekend?

admin answers:

You are not necessarily protected from chickenpox. Even people with 2 doses of the vaccine can still get it. Only having the disease gives true immunity, and unfortunately, you did not get it during childhood.

But don’t worry about the Easter visit. Unless you come into contact with the fluid from the shingles blisters, you can’t get chickenpox from your mother-in-law.

Daniel asks…

When Is Chicken Pox No longer Contagious?

So my little sister nine years old got the chicken pox’s about the a week ago and she even had the vaccine to prevent it but still got that’s because her mom(not my Mom By the way) had the shingles so she was exposed quite often so I stayed at my actual moms house for a few extra days so I would not be exposed I had. so I came over yesterday and according to my dad she did not get a very bad case of it and I have been around her quite abit today but I am still a little superstitious about it. It looks like all of them have scabbed over but I want to know if she is know longer contagious and what my chances of getting it are if she still has it. my dad told me she has not gotten any more bumps since like Wednesday. I have had the vaccine and I have a very strong immune system I very rarely get sick. also since I have not been around this home for a couple days should I clean any of my stuff off.

admin answers:

Chicken pox is no longer contagious after all the lesions have scabbed over, this is usually about a week after the rash first appears.

Paul asks…

chicken pox contagious?

I had the chicken pox when I was a kid but it was a mild case. Can I still get it again from someone who now has it if I only had a mild case? I also had shingles when I was a kid.

admin answers:

You obviously carry VZV in your body. VZV is varicella zoster virus and is the virus responsible for both chicken pox and herpes zoster (what you’re calling “shingles”). I wouldn’t worry about chicken pox if I were you. You’re beyond that now. Be more concerned about herpes zoster. You could have more outbreaks.

“dbraunofva” has it a little mixed up. There’s no herpes zoster virus. As I said, varicella zoster virus causes both chicken pox and herpes zoster. When someone has a case of chicken pox, sometimes the body is able to clear the virus but if it can’t, there’s a possibility that herpes zoster may develop later on. It’s not a certainty, but a possibility. After chicken pox resolves, if the body was unable to clear it, the VZV retreats into spinal nerve tissue and goes dormant. Sometimes the virus is reawakened, reactivated during a time of severe stress as with an illness. While this often occurs in older adults, as you know from experience, herpes zoster outbreaks can and do occur in children, teens and young adults. They tend to occur in cycles and, unfortunately at this time, there’s no cure and no way to rid the body of VZV.

If you’ve had chicken pox AND a herpes zoster outbreak, you have the antibodies. That’s guaranteed. No amount of blood draws are going to change that.

Sandra asks…

I got diagnosed with Shingles yesterday….?

I have come into work as I was told it isnt contagious unless people come into contact with the area (which is on my back and obviously covered).
I feel okay apart from a bit of pain in my pain (site of pain)… should I expect to feel worse as it progresses??

admin answers:

Yes, expect to feel worst before it feels better. Take time and get plenty of R&R and take your medicine.

Linda asks…

I have shingles?

Am I contagious? Am I just contagious to those that have never had chicken pox? My doctor didn’t say and I forgot to ask.

admin answers:

You could be contagious to people who haven’t had chicken pox. You should also stay clear of pregnant women b/c shingles can harm their baby.

Feel better!
