Your Questions About Shingles

Robert asks…

I have some tingling on my head? Any ideas what it might be (seriously)?

About a week ago, my scalp felt like it was irritated, but it was not. I had not changed my daily routine. As a few days have progressed, there are no bumps or scars on my head or redness of any kind. Yet the crown of my head tingles and burns I need to get to a doctor, but it is weird because it isn’t an irritation to shampoo, there is no flaking or redness or scars and it isn’t getting worse or better. And, it isn’t a sunburn because I haven’t been exposed to sunlight. I thought it might be shingles but there is no sign of it, it isn’t dematitis or some infection of the scalp. Anyone have any ideas what it might be so I can ask my doctor about it? Also, I feel find otherwise, I don’t fee sick at all. It feels like tingling and burning on the crown of my scalp. Not necessarily on top of the skin, but just underneath it.

admin answers:

Look into the crown chakra, what you have could be a good thing. If you tend to see a golden color, maybe when you close your eyes, this has something to do with it.

Hope this helps.

David asks…

Do I need to re-shingle my roof?

Thirty-two years old; asphalt; no signs of wear; no leaks. Moderate climate (Virginia).

admin answers:

Invite a professional roofer to inspect your roof, and to determine that all of the sheathing is intact. Typically asphalt shingles have about a 30-year useful life so you may be due. As long as the sheathing, joists, etc. Are all in good shape new shingles will be easy and inexpensive. Opt for new ridge vents, you’ll be glad you did.

Carol asks…

Is it OK to vaccinate a 10 month old for chicken pox?

I am 37 and have been diagnosed with shingles. My 10 month old son has not been vaccinated for chicken pox yet. My pediatrician said to bring him in and if he wasn’t showing any signs of having contracted chicken pox yet, they would give him the vaccine for it. She said that normally they would not do it until 15 months. So that got me worried. I looked it up and the vaccine appears to be approved for kids aged 12 months to 12 years. So my question is, is it OK to vaccinate at 10 months?

Maria asks…

How can I make this more descriptive?

Max read the letter four more times. He jumped up and down with excitement. Then he grabbed some copper pieces and ran out the door toward Rusty’s Equipment. He carefully scanned the area near him for the security guards. Still, there were no signs of anything. Max looked up, checking the skies. Hundreds of chimeras raced by like a busy road.
When Max arrived at the store, he was surprised how different it was compared to the rest of Patropoli Tower. The front door was slanted, the window was cracked, and the roof had only a few ripped shingles. Since Max arrived, he noticed that the outside of the buildings looked fancy and well kept, but the inside was always out of place and trashed. This place was different. Max shuffled and peeked through the window. All he could see was the cashiers desk with some newly purchased clothes on it, several tools on a shelf, and a few coats racked on a movable cart. He looked further to the right until the side of the window blocked his view. Miranda was sitting on a bench near the shoe section, looking around nervously, waiting. Max smiled and opened the door trying to sneak up on her. He slowly tiptoed over.
“Miranda!” he yelled with happiness, not in his usual voice.

admin answers:

Don”t write there were no signs of anything…what can you write in the place of the word anything…there were no signs of a storm brewing or whatever it is you are supposed to be describing.

James asks…

I hired what I thought was a licensed and insured roofer to redo my roof come to find out he is neither and h?

..find out he is not licensed or insured and he began to strip parts of my roof and install economy no warranty shingles.A contract was written but I never signed it because he said I didn’t have to….the shingles were supposed to be 30 year shingles…when I confronted him about it he told me don’t worry he has me covered and that’s how he keeps his prices low. These shingles are discolored and I mentioned that to him right away before I had any knowledge about the shingle …he had all of the packages turned away from the house so that I would not see the ECONOMY NO WARRANTY labels on the packaging…he has not been around since I confronted him and all of his tools are scattered all over my yard and front porch and there is even some on my roof not to mention the dumpster that’s been sitting in my yard for almost 2 weeks now…HELP…what do I do and what about all the stuff including about 20 packages of shingles sitting in my driveway that I do not want because they are not warranted…I paid him half up front…and now my roof is a disaster with roof boards exposed.I live in Massachussetts.

admin answers:

The Commonwealth’s Attorney General’s office has a number you can reach. Try calling on Tuesday. Mass.gov (or similar) is the web-site that takes you to the right page. Phil’s idea about locking up the crook’s tools is not so good. Those guys can get nasty and vandalize things on you. I DO suggest that you inform the local police about this situation. AND go have a chat with the Building Inspector.when attempting to sue these bums, swhat frequently happens is you win a judgement, but getting money is a totally different story. These fly-by-nights usually don’t have a pot to piss in.

Your Questions About Shingles

Susan asks…

Youngest age for Shingles?

I’ve been doing a lot of research on Shingles, and though many sites say that Shingles is mainly a disease that is prevalent in older individuals, it says nothing about the average age, or even on the younger scale of who gets shingles.
Does anyone have any idea?

admin answers:

I was 15 when I got my first outbreak of Shingles, and I know a 9 year old girl whos had them. So I would say any time after you’ve had the chicken pox virus you can get them. But it’s not normal, usually occurs in younger people who have a compromised immune systems or those who get sick easily.

James asks…

Question about Shingles?

Would Shingles be considered a disease? Or is it just a virus?

admin answers:

Usually, people refer to Shingles as the disease which is caused by the herpes zoster virus. However, they are used interchangeably in literature.

It is both.

Clear as a bell–just like most things in medicine *wink*.

Linda asks…

Is there any point in seeing a doctor for shingles?

I have shingles on my forehead, and the lymph nodes all down my face are sore and swollen. Now I noticed a couple of shingles spots in the corner of my eye near my eyeball.
I would go to the doctor, but I’m out of state and my insurance wouldn’t cover it. Plus, I know shingles is caused by a virus and there’s really not that much that can be done to treat it, it has to just run it’s course. So, it seems kind of pointless anyways.
I’m just wondering about the risk of complications now that I noticed it on my eye. How do I know, at what point do I go see a doctor? There is no pain if I do not touch my face, and only some slight tenderness and soreness if I touch the area
In cases where people have gone blind or had facial paralysis, what goes wrong, and what symptoms should I look out for.

My sister had shingles around her eye and even on her eyeball and had no complications and everything went back to normal after it ran it’s course.

admin answers:

Personally, yes, i would go. Your choice completely though. The doctor can prescribe you an antiviral that helps. Ive never had them around my eyes or even on my face, but i do get them on my abdomen and chest. As for complications with the eyes, many numerous things can happen, are you willing to take that chance? As for it being a virus and running its course, it is a virus, and it ran its course as chickenpox when you were a child probably, but something has reactivated it for you. Go to the doc, get the meds to make life a little easier and best of luck to you!

Jenny asks…

What are these faint light brown stains on the white stucco ceiling.?

There is a faint brown stain running parallel to the studs in the ceiling. We have been having very heavy rains so after the rains I checked the ceiling to feel for dampness, but it feels bone dry.
It’s appearing in two places in the ceiling, both parallel to the wooden studs that are of course not in view. What could be causing it?
The shingles look like they are in good shape.
The house is about 40 years old and is on it’s second roof.

admin answers:

Wait! It does NOT mean you need a new roof. Maybe its just the high humidity causing the wood to bleed color and moisture through the stucco. Dont jump to conclusions. Did you go into the attic to look for drips during the rain? . You might try turning on a sprinkler set on the roof and after a half hour go up in the attic and look for drips. It’s definitly a moisture problem but there can be several possible reasons for that moisture. Also just laying up there in that area of the attic with the lights off for 20 minutes or half an hour during daylight when the suns on the roof may reveal any possible holes in the roof. Remember it depends on the angle of the sun on the slope of the roof so WHEN you go to look may be important. If you find a light leak … Push a nail up through it to reveal from the outside exactly where the leak is which needs fixing. Often such leaks have a single point of entry or a systematic problem like the ridgecap of the house. Just getting up there with some roofing sealer and addressing the areas where the shingles show damage may help while looking for loose nails which also should be tarred
The stains themselves can be covered with a good stain sealer but thats just a coverup IF you do have a leak you do not want to ignore it. That you have more than one stain suggest its condensation or a larger leak than just one pin hole.

Chris asks…

How to install composite shingles approx. 1/2″ over a drip edge on roof?

A few years ago I re-roofed my house. On all sides I installed the shingles some what flush to the drip edge. Another words there is no shingle overhang. My friend tells me on the 2 sides by not having an overhang of 1/2″- 3/4″ I am risking water blowing underneath the shingles and thus causing a leak. I live in Southern California.
I am not refering the front but the side of of the roof the angles down. My house roof is gable in style. I realize with the front I am kind a stuck with what I have. Any advise would be appreciated.
I do not want to re-tro fit the side shingles without good cause. I am hoping just to keep it that way and he is worrying me for nothin but what is right?

admin answers:

If you have drip edge running up the rake of your roof, leave the shingles alone. You won’t have any trouble. If you were doing the roof over again, you would leave about a 1/4″ overhang at the most.

Builder for 40 years.

Mark asks…

Do i have Shingles???????????

Im only 15, but my grandmother (being a retired nurse) suspects that i have shingles. I had the chickenpox when i was 2 or 3, but staring about a week ago i started having really bad itching on my left side. a day or 2 later i started getting welps that looked like bug bites, so i figured that that was what it was. But its over a week later and nothing has improved. The welps go from my lower from all around to my lower back. Now theyve stoped itching but my whole side HURTS! like it feels like one huge bad bruise and is really sore. They dont look like blisters or what normal shingles look like, but i heard that if its a mild case they wont necessarily be blisters or ooze. The only place it really hurts is around my hip bone. its feels like a terrible terrible bruise. My grandmothers said that even if i went to the doctor, they couldnt do anything about it because its been more then 3 days and after that they cant give u medicine for it. They still look alot like bug bites, but the brusing and soreness is unusual if it was bug bites. Do you think it could be shingles? Its weird cause im so young, but i have been stressed out lately from school and no sleep and ive been worried over a bunch of stuff, and i heard that can cause it to flare up. When do u think the pain will start to go away? should i go to the doctor even though theres probably nothing they can do for it? Thanks!!! 🙂

admin answers:

My mother was told the same thing about my shingles – it was caused by stress. She felt terribly guilty that she had done something or not noticed something that had caused me such stress that I got Shingles. It wasn’t until years later when I casually discussed with a doctor some recurrent symptoms that I had. Painful tingling up one side on the back of my leg and then down the other side over several days, always going away on its own.) He explained this was a side effect from the Shingles I had as a child. He also told me that Shingles is not caused by stress! It is caused by a virus – the chicken pox virus, which I’m sure your daughter had previously. Don’t worry about stress!

Your Questions About Shingles

Chris asks…

my father suffers from boughts of shingles could my daughter who is contagious with chicken pox give him an ?

attack of the shingles

admin answers:

No, you can catch chickenpox from shingles, but not the other way round. Shingles is not caught, but is due to reactivation of previous chickenpox infection.

William asks…

Are shingles contagious?

A friend just informed me he may have shingles. Is this
contagious?

admin answers:

Sure is, BUT keep in mind this is the virus that causes chicken pox that has lain dormant in the body. There are some people who may be immune.

Steven asks…

Is shingles contagious ?

I just found out i had shingles … which i didn’t even know you could get when your 25 but whatever anyways it’s on my back and I have 4 daughters and one being a newborn … is this contagious because i don’t wanna give it to them and it could be harmful for kids .
Helpful thanks to the first answer …

And how many of you just googled shingles ?lol
but i can’t stay away from them my g/f can’t take care of newborn and 3 other kids … not gonna happen.
When i went to school no one had shingles …… maybe ur thinking chickenpox?

admin answers:

Shingles is only contagious if you have never had chicken pox. Depending on how old your daughters are, they may have already had the vaccination. The newborn should still be protected by your antibodies, though that isn’t always perfect. Primarily as long as you keep the sores covered and don’t let them touch it, and are careful to wash your hands after you change the dressing, plus get the old dressing out of the house- you should be able to keep them from catching it. In the shingles form, chicken pox isn’t airborne via droplets, fortunately. Most children get the vaccination with the MMR shot, at about 12-15 months of age, and then a booster when they start school. If yours are fully immunized, it should be no problem. I didn’t have to google this, I answer this question all the time. Most often I start answering a lot when school starts each year.

Nancy asks…

Your Questions About Shingles

Sandra asks…

I want to try all natural treatment for pain and insomnia?

I don’t have insurance, my husband has been unemployed for over a year(no work here), I have muscle pain, muscle cramping, shingles, joint pain, and I can’t sleep many nights, I am up in the shower, it seems to ease the pain.

admin answers:

Try red onion wine (I know it sounds disgusting, but it works).
Cut up 3 red onions into 8 equal pieces and place them in a clean jar. Pour in one bottle of red wine. Let it sit for a week.
After a week, drain the wine into another jar and refrigerate it. Keep the onions. Drink 50 mL of the wine twice a day and eat a few pieces of the onion.
The wine helps with joint pain, sleeping disorders, overactive bladders, and it can lower blood pressure and blood sugar. It also prevents cancer and contains antioxidants, vitamins, and has medicinal properties.

Jenny asks…

Can the singles treatment Valtrex be taken with the pain medication Aleve?

Are there any adverse drug interactions?

What about Valtrex and Tylenol?

I’ve got a headache and want to take something but this freaking shingles treatment gets me worried about drug interaction.

admin answers:

I’m not a doctor or pharmacist, but I went to the site below. It listed no interactions between Valtrex and Aleve. It only gave an extra warning about Tylenol and alcohol/food, which you know about anyway. Besides, you don’t drink.

You can also call your local 24 hour pharmacy — they’ll answer your questions about that, even if you aren’t a customer. If you have insurance, sometimes they have an advice line for things like that — I’ve used such lines before and been pleasantly surprised.

William asks…

Has anyone used Tea Tree Oil for the treatment of Shingles?

He has taken prescription creams to clear the rash but he still has pain in his arms and chest from nerve problems that occured as a complication. Please help we are desperate to find something that will help his pain. I know that Tea Tree Oil has many uses and benefits for skin problems but will it help the nerve pain.

Mark asks…

Treatment for Shingles?

I’m looking for individuals that have or have had a bad bout of Shingles. I know that they are a result of childhood chicken pox which comes from the zoster virus. After almost 10 days of excurciating pain I was finally told what I had when the “rash” associated with the disease finally appeared on my skin. If people could share their experiences and the treatments given, I would be very thankfull.
The ER doctor prescribed Percocets for the pain which helps and 2 very good drugs I’m told. Famciclovir and Lyrica. The druggist told me those drugs are the best anyone doctor could offer to me!
My Shingles are on my upper thigh area and right side of my waist. The pain extends from the right testical to around the side of my back (waist area)

admin answers:

Pfizer has a new medication, called lyrica, that is a cousin of neurontin and a little more benign, that can be used for pain caused by shingles. An Antiviral given early enough may help. When I rotated through the ER, anybody who came in with shingles got the good stuff (narcotics), no questions asked, unless they had a past history of abuse.

Joseph asks…

What are the treatments for post herptic neuropathy and the shingles virus entering the optic nerve?

I had a wonderful case of shingles this spring that covered my right forehead & scalp down to my right eye.
After giving me a prescription for anit-viral drugs, I demanded something at least to help with the intense itching & sensation of being attacked by millions of stabbing pins. My doc gave me an allergy drug – he is very conservative on pain medications. He did insist I go to an eye doc to make sure the virus hadn’t entered my optice nerve. Is going to the eye doc & no pain meds standard procedure?

admin answers:

I would think pain meds approp definate get another opinion if optic nerve involved possible meds, can help or even laser treatment

Charles asks…

symptoms to shingles?

My proiniple called and said someone in my class had shingles and came to school not knowing it and that i was exposed…. can you give me the symptoms so i know what to look out for?

admin answers:

It’s an itchy, sometimes painful rash that develops on one side of your body… Usually but not always on your chest or abdomen.

Carol asks…

Is it possible for the shingles to give you mental illness type symptoms?

admin answers:

Coping with the pain of shingles can cause depression.

For about one in five people who develop shingles, the pain continues in the same spot long after the blisters have cleared. This condition is known as postherpetic neuralgia.

When you have postherpetic neuralgia, damaged nerve fibers send confused and exaggerated messages of pain from your skin to your brain. This leaves the affected area of skin sensitive to even the slightest touch. For some people, the brush of clothing or a breeze can be excruciatingly painful.

Pain medication, antidepressants or anticonvulsant medications may help provide relief until the pain subsides.

Shingles can also lead to other complications, including inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) and other neurological problems. If shingles occurs on your face, it can cause hearing problems and temporary or permanent blindness. Loss of facial movement (paralysis) is possible as well. If blisters aren’t properly treated, bacterial skin infections are another potential problem.

Ruth asks…

Symptoms of shingles….?

I may have shingles..only mild though as i only have one blister/spot

can anyone give me some symptoms because ive been run down for the past 2 weeks with various …

admin answers:

-Pain, burning, tingling, numbness or extreme sensitivity in a certain part of your body
-A red rash that begins a few days after the pain
-Fluid-filled blisters that break open and crust over
-Itching
-Fever and chills
-Headache
-Upset stomach or abdominal pain

Typically, the shingles rash occurs on only one side of your body. This is an important sign to help diagnose shingles. It may appear, for example, as a band of blisters that wraps from the middle of your back around one side of your chest to your breastbone, following the path of the nerve where the virus had been inactive. Sometimes, the shingles rash occurs around one eye or on one side of the neck or face.

Pain is usually the first symptom of shingles. For some, it can be intense, with just the slightest touch causing severe pain. Sometimes the pain can be mistaken for other problems or diseases, such as kidney stones, gallstones or appendicitis, depending on its location. Some people experience the pain without the rash, which makes diagnosing shingles more difficult.

Although the shingles rash may resemble chickenpox, the virus typically causes more pain and less itching the second time around.

Your Questions About Shingles

Donna asks…

my shingles rash has heeled but i am still itchy at where the rash was. is that normal?

my shingles by my torso has heeled but i am still itchy at the same spot, also i feel like maybe the rash has travel up to my ear and scalp because i have been itchy their for a day now. not to much, but a little itchy. is that normal for an after shingle attack?

admin answers:

My father-in-law had shingles very badly. They were on his leg. I hate to tell you this, but 4 years later he’s still feeling some symptoms of them. He lost a lot of the “feeling” in his leg, like a nerve damage issue. They are a very bad virus that can leave lasting effects. I wouldn’t be surprised that you still have an itchy rash. But I would contact your doctor if it is bothering you. They may be able to give you a cream to use – they did for my father in law.

Good luck!

Sandy asks…

how do you clean the shingles rash?

my husband has developed shingles. is it ok to shower and bathe with this very painful rash?

admin answers:

I have shingles right now for the first time! And i feel for your hubby!! Cus i know how bad it hurts!! But i do shower,…it doesnt seem to bother it much when the shower hits it,..just make sure the water is not too hot. Cus it can cause it burn worse,.even after the shower is done. And dont scrub it or use anything to abrasive on it. I just use a wash cloth with soap, and gently rub it. And then quickly rinse. I hope he feels better soon! And me too! Lol! Good luck!!

Michael asks…

Can the shingles rash disappear?

I am getting over shingles. The rash is disappearing. I now have another intense itch on my back (like before). Can the rash reappear?

admin answers:

I gave you some links to more than you ever wanted to know about shingles.

However, this is a condition where having an abundance of knowledge can be helpful. So read up as you have the opportunity.

George asks…

How long can I expect to feel tired and lethargic after the shingles rash has disappeared?

admin answers:

I had it and after the medication i took it seems like it took
2 months i think for the medication to wear off

Mark asks…

Does shingles spread once the rash has appeared?

My friend (yes really) was diagnosed with shingles last week. She had the rash for a week or so before she saw the Doc and got diagnosed. The spots are dry and crusted and she has been on anti-biotics since last week but she says the rash has now spread further down her feet.

Is that supposed to happen? I thought once the rash was out that was it? I’m worried in case it’s maybe something else and not shingles at all.
Anyone any idea?

admin answers:

Usually a single eruption of shingles is the norm. Since shingles is very easy to diagnose, the doc was probably correct. One question that arises is: How old is your friend? Shingles typically only occurs in the elderly under normal conditions. If your friend is young (<50), and the rash is indeed continuing to spread, it could be an indicator of something else going on, in particular some type of immune suppressive condition.

Realize the Benefits of Herbal Incense

Realize the Benefits of Herbal Incense

Article by K2herbal.com

In the twenty-first century, people have become more open to various methods to promote health. This means trying methods that are not traditionally prescribed by doctors or supplied through a pharmacy. People have used herbal incense for a very long time for many reasons, yet its use has become increasingly popular in this century. The following article addresses several benefits of using spice incense and other varieties of herbal incense.

The use of herbal incense is inextricably associated to aromatherapy, though there is a lot more information readily available on the Web regarding the latter. Discussing and pinpointing hard facts is difficult in relation to herbal incense because of its non-traditional roots, yet the following information has been widely reported by users of herbal incense:

– It can help in curbing or controlling the symptoms of shingles. Essential oils used in the production of herbal incense have been recognized to help shingles: ravensara, bergamot, and niaouli.

– Spice incense can be used to promote better sleep. Studies have supported evidence that herbal incense containing lavender can promote deeper sleep as well as more energy when one awakes.

Your Questions About Shingles

David asks…

i’m building a carport using preformed blocks with anchors on level ground next to a slope. how can i brace it

the size is ten feet wide by twenty feet long and eight feet tall with four foot truss on on top. its being built on a level black top. i dug holes for the blocks. its free standing but i would like to add some support. its to far from the house to brace it. its about two feet from a hillside that drops about twenty feet. whats the best method and material bury on the slope and run a support towards the top.im using 4×6 on top of 4×4’s. it will have roof shingles.
correction, i will use 4×4 braces from my post to my beams, not on the bottom. its a windy area in the mountains by big bear. i used huge pine trees a few feet away as temp. braces while building it as i had nothing else nearby. some how i would like to brace it from the 4×6 beam on the hill side and tie in to something i can bury deep to tie in to it.i was thinging of buring a 20ft galv. fensce post on the hillside with about 5 ft exposed and carriage bolt 2×4’s ukp to the beam, about 4 of them, one for every post.

admin answers:

I can’t see your picture, however, on the finish, we normally brace the beams with 45 degree braces. Which would need four anchor bolts on your columns(two on each side that under the beams) for the plates. Then nail the 45 braces to the up right plates, and beams.
For the rough, I rarely seen braces on block columns. You may want to use a plank up-right support with two 45 braces, nailed to spike pins(iron) or plates with ramset nails inside the garage on the hillside, and outside where you can nail use wooden-spike in the ground.

Donna asks…

is it safe to moor a narrow boat on a tidal canal where it will touch he river bed at low tide?

am looking at finding out about living on a boat to moor on a tidal river near where i live the water depth is about 4 foot at high tide and the river bottom is shingle and sandy and level, i would love to get a narrow boat but i am unsure if will be ok when the tide is out? would i need to put it onto some kind of support so its not on the river bed? or there is a large sand bank at the edge where other boats are? any advice would be fab! thank you very much

admin answers:

Historically, commercial narrowboats sometimes moored in river berths where they would take to the bottom at low tide. These boats when fully loaded had very little freeboard and the boatmen took the precaution of passing three or four ropes around and beneath the craft. If on a rising tide the boats appeared to be sticking, the ropes could be worked back and forth to break the suction.
With a residential narrowboat the freeboard will be much greater and there should not be a problem, provided that the craft is not left unattended for long periods as the ropes will be of little value without someone to attend them.

Carol asks…

I have this Uncle who’s elderly … how much should I get involved into his life?

He’s literally a genius . His genius has always kept him from being “Social” and he has always enjoyed his privacy. However, in the last year he’s had heart surgery, shingles, and he’s going deft.

I want to give him his space and I also want to provide family support … any recommendations on how to do this?

admin answers:

Well, if you two don’t talk on a regular basis you could start off with dropping a card in the mail letting him know you are thinking about him. Let him know that you know he’s been having a hard time and if he needs anything feel free to call. Put your number in the card. If you live near him maybe give him a call to see if he needs anything. Let him know you’ll be out that way so it go you thinking that maybe you could pick something up for him or whatever.

Susan asks…

Anyone ever built a wall with 2 X 4’s the opposite way? ?

What I am asking is would it be O K to build a wall….basically to cover and straighten an existing wall….using 2×4’s but instead of the 4 being on bottom….make that the 2? This wall yes…..but it is to cover shingles and straighten…not a support wall anyway.

admin answers:

Your solution is spot on. As long as this wall will not be a support wall, you’ll be great. This also allows for some added insulation value.

Mark asks…

What should i name my business in Knoxville Tn?

I’m currently putting myself through college and i’ve come up with an easier way to support myself rather than work 35-40hrs per week. The shingle roof homes where i live are covered with a fungus (blue-green algea) and not only is it an eyesore but it destroys the roof over time. I’ll be cleaning the roof. I’ve grown up in the construction business so otherwise i have some how-to knowledge … but to begin this one man operation i need to establish a name. Also, “Roof Cleaning” is out of the question. Thanks for the input and if i choose to use any name, without modification, i’ll contact him/her and send $100.

admin answers:

The naming of your business could be one of the most important decisions you will make. A name’s originality and legal availability will create a real asset value of its own, as it becomes marketed and gains market acceptance.

The name you choose will become the focal point of all the benefits and features that relate to your business. Customers will be able to find and refer others to it in the future.

Since any names that are suggested here may already be owned by another party, I wanted to go a different route…

I suggest either hiring a name creation firm or get together with your friends and/or family and throw a “name party” & have everyone bounce some ideas around. Compile a listing of names that you like the best. Once you have that list, do as much free research as you can before you delve into comprehensive research.

I listed some links where you can do some preliminary name checking. However, please be aware that this is merely scratching the surface of what’s out there.

Only comprehensive research will tell you if the name is truly available. But, these links are free & a great place to start, so I’d try them out first.

Comprehensive research consists of looking at marks that are similar in Sound, Appearance or Meaning in the pending & registered Federal AND State trademark files as well as the US National Common-Law files.

There are other sites that offer free searching capabilities in conjunction with their commercial services, so I’m not able to post those links due to the Yahoo! TOS. You’ll also want to check domain names & yellow pages, so simply do a search for “free domain name search” and “national yellowpages” and the appropriate links will pop up.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!
