5 Strange and Rare Causes for Back Pain

5 Strange and Rare Causes for Back Pain

Article by Leroy Lombard

Muscle imbalances and herniated or bulging discs cause most cases of back pain or Sciatica. But what if you don?t suffer from either of these problems? There are some other unusual causes to back pain. Here I?m going to share 5 less common things that could be causing your back pain.

Shingles – Singles is caused by a virus called Herpes Zoster. This is the same virus that causes chicken pox. Shingles affects the nerves that provide sensation to the skin. After you fight off a case of chicken pox, it is believed that the virus lies dormant in the nerve roots. In most people it never acts up again as Shingles, but in times of extreme stress or in people with a compromised immune system it can present itself.

When Shingles strikes it can cause pain along the nerves, especially the lumbar nerves in your lower back. You will also notice blisters forming in that area as well. Although you cannot spread Shingles to others, you can spread chicken pox to people who have never had chicken pox before or who have not been vaccinated. If you believe you are suffering from Shingles, see your doctor.

Bone or Disc Infection – Bacterial infections of the discs or bones in the spine are extremely rare, but they can happen. It is possible to contract Tuberculosis in the spine, which is called Pott?s disease.

Also, it is possible to get an infection called Brucellosis, which affects the Sacroiliac joints (SI joints) in the pelvis. This is usually contracted from drinking goat milk, however, this is extremely rare.

Generally, bacterial infections of bones or discs is very rare and usually quite serious. They are often treated with an extensive antibiotic regimen.

Pelvic Bleeding – Bleeding in the pelvis is often the result of people who take blood thinning painkillers for extended periods of time. This is another reason not to rely on extended use of painkillers to ?treat? your back pain. They may make the pain go away, but they don?t treat the underlying problem and they can be dangerous if taken regularly.

When bleeding happens, Sciatica will usually present itself quickly as the blood pools and puts pressure on the Sciatic nerve.

Paget?s Disease – No one knows with certainty what causes Paget?s disease, but it involves unusual bone growth and variations in bone density. It tends to afflict elderly people more than younger people.

Paget?s disease can usually be diagnosed easily with an X-ray, which will expose the unusual bone growths, however, a biopsy will usually be performed to authenticate the X-ray results.

The only treatment for Paget?s disease is pain medication to help manage pain and other prescriptions to slow the growth of the bones and stunt to progression of the disease.

Aneurysm of the Aorta – Similar to how a bulging disc can cause back pain, an aneurysm of the aorta can cause the walls of the aorta to bulge outward. Many times this will not result any symptoms at all, but if it bulges in a particular direction it can apply pressure to spinal nerves and result in back pain.

Usually this is treated by grafting tissue on the weakened portion of the aorta wall to strengthen the blood vessel.

These 5 unusual causes to back pain are not common. The typical culprits are muscular imbalances and bulging discs in the spine. However, sometimes the common answer doesn?t apply. If you believe you are suffering from any of these problems, contact your medical provider and have them examine you.

Top 5 Things You Should Know About Dermatologists

Top 5 Things You Should Know About Dermatologists

Article by Stephanie Miles

Your skin is one of the first things people notice about you, which is why you shouldn’t leave the care of it up to just anyone.

Finding the right dermatologist involves much more than simply searching for a doctor with a medical license and an open door. After all, skin is the most visible organ on the human body, and you wouldn’t leave the look of your face up to just any doctor, would you?

Rather, choosing the right dermatologist to take care of your patient-specific needs and issues-whether they involve simply treating acne or a more serious skin condition-involves a number of different factors and should not be taken lightly. Some things to consider include:

1. Everyone Should See the Dermatologist. Dermatology is not just for teenagers anymore. Because they can spot and diagnose a number of conditions that first surface on the skin-including abnormal birth marks, eczema, shingles, and sun damage-all Americans should make a trip to the dermatologist an annual event. In addition, dermatologists also serve as teachers to many patients, since they know better how to protect the skin, hair, and nails from environmental damage than just about anyone else.

2. Dermatologists Don’t Just Treat Acne. While the facial acne and pimples that plague teens are what today’s dermatologists are best known for treating, the majority of dermatologists actually diagnose and care for a wide array of more complex conditions. From infections to rosacea, dermatologists are trained physicians with knowledge of the entire human body, not just the skin.

Due to the increased incidences of skin cancer in men and women, dermatologists have additionally become a first line of defense in the fight against cancer, thanks to the annual skin cancer screenings and mole removals that all adults are encouraged to have done every year.

3. Dermatologists Can Help Prevent Future Problems. Although much of the field of dermatology involves spotting problems and finding the correct treatment to fix them, today’s dermatologists are actually trained in preventing future medical conditions before they arise, too. Among the topics dermatologists routinely cover with patients include how to prevent hair loss, care for nails-to prevent the common condition of nail fungus-and protect skin from the damaging effects of the sun. Unlike other beauty professionals, dermatologists are medically trained and licensed, which means that the advice they offer can be trusted fully by patients.

4. Not all dermatologists have experience treating all skin conditions. Whether it is acne, skin cancer, a malignant mole, rosacea, or simply an irritating rash, dermatologists are trained to treat a multitude of general skin problems. When your issue is slightly more specialized, however, it pays to find a dermatologist with experience treating the specific condition you are suffering from.

Finding a dermatologist who specializes in treating a certain condition can mean anything from doing a basic web search of physicians in your area to calling your primary care doctor for a referral. No matter how the specialized dermatologist is found, however, you should ask him or her how many times they have seen this skin condition before and what expertise they have in treating it before going in to the appointment, since it may be a waste of everyone’s time to head into a dermatologist’s office only to find out that he or she does not treat this specific problem.

5. Dermatologists are surgeons, too. While the majority of most dermatologists’ day-to-day routine revolves around treating patients with medical conditions, dermatologists are actually considered surgeons, too. That is because many treatments commonly associated with plastic surgeons or day spa technicians can also be performed by dermatologists just as easily. These commonly include Botox injections, lip enhancements, laser techniques, and various forms of liposuction.

Patients can be confident when undergoing the needle or knife at a dermatologist’s office that the treatment is being performed by someone who is skilled in the procedure, since dermatologists are required by law to undergo rigorous medical training prior to entering the practice. And unlike day spas, dermatologists’ offices must be licensed by a number of state agencies to meet a set of minimum safety requirements, ensuring the quality of care and safety of all patients undergoing treatment.

The information in the article is not intended to substitute for the medical expertise and advice of your health care provider. We encourage you to discuss any decisions about treatment or care with an appropriate health care provider.

Chickenpox Vaccine

Chickenpox Vaccine

Chickenpox is commonly a childhood disease that affects children usually, but not always, under the age of 12. If your child gets the chicken pox he or she may need to be vaccinated, or get a chicken pox vaccine that will treat the childhood virus.

How can you tell if your child has chickenpox? Your child may come home from school with an itchy rash that quickly turn into red spots. These “red spots” or “pock markes”  usually look like small blisters.

Most kids will get a mild grade fever and generate flu like symptoms.

Treating Chicken Pox: Keeping your child comfortable and treating the symptoms is the best way to treat chickenpox. There is no way to stop chickenpox in its tracks. There are chickenpox vaccines now that most schools require children to have before entering pre-school. This prevents the mass spread of the virus to all the school children.

How long will your child have chickenpox? The actual chickenpox virus is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. Those children who acquire the virus will get the typical symptoms and get over the virus within approximately 4 days.

It’s important to keep the itchy bumps under control, because once kids begin scratching them, they may in fact scratch them open exposing the open area to many different infections that are everywhere. Children that have a weaker immune system are at a higher risk for getting an infection. If your child is at higher risk for infection then getting your child vaccinated is probably a good idea.

Why does my child need vaccinated from chickenpox?

Another excellent reason for vaccinating your child is that when a child gets chickenpox when they are a child, they are at a higher risk for developing shingles as an adult. Some people are under the misconception that they will be immune to shingles once they have had chickenpox and this is just not true.

Most adults can remember having chickenpox as a child and we remember how uncomfortable those itchy bumps were. Luckily, your child no longer has to needlessly suffer from these symptoms. Medical science has made it possible to avoid Chickenpox all together. Make sure you keep your child up to date on all his or her vaccinations.

Your Questions About Shingles

Joseph asks…

Fedex!!!!!!!!!!!!?

i was supposed to be getting a package from my mom and she mailed it express by fedex……well when she gave me the tracking number and tracked it just fine and everything and it said the package was between the front doors and my house….well when i got home from work there was nothing there…..and i called the 800 number for fedex and they said they r going to investigate it and im supposed to call in tomorrow…..will i get the package back and when will i get it back cause they said there going to call the driver that was supposed to delever the package to my house….so can somebody please tell me if im going to get my package and when do u think

admin answers:

It was probably stolen, and you’re probably not going to see it again. Sorry, but it’s the truth! (Good luck anyway, I hope your package defies the odds)

Next time, have your mom make sure to ask for a “direct signature,” that way they can’t leave it unattended at the door. Your work might be OK with you having it delivered there – that way someone is available to sign for it during the FedEx delivery hours.

David asks…

FedEx????????

I ordered an item and FedEx is delivering it to me. I was home all day and online it said that no one was home so they could not deliver the package. This was their second attempt and I am really fed up with FedEx. They left a slip on my door yesterday when they made their forst attempt. It says you may pick-up your package TODAY after 7:00 P.M. Yesterday is the Today in the slip. Can I still go and get my package since they also attempted to deliver it today?

admin answers:

Yes, the driver will be back at FedEx at 7p. Don’t go earlier because that is when he is expected to return. You can sign for your package then.

Lisa asks…

fedex??????

does fedex ground deliver on sundays? i need to know!

admin answers:

I’m pretty sure they do not deliver on Sundays. At least in south carolina they don’t

Daniel asks…

How to get Fedex to deliver the package to the nearest Fedex location?

I ordered a package and it is currently in transit. How can I change the order so that instead of having it delivered to my house, I can have it delivered to the nearest Fedex location (no one will be at home on the scheduled day of delivery)?

Thank you!

admin answers:

Well they will leave a note(or a door tag) if they need a signature if they don’t
they will just leave the package on your doorstep so you dont really need to change to a
fedex location

Mary asks…

What time does fedex start delivering to homes for verizon?

I ordered a phone monday and i chose the fedex 2-day by 7pm no charge shipping option. It’s Wednesday and I’m super anxious to get it. I was wondering what time would fedex deliver my phone. Thanks(:

admin answers:

Do you have tracking? Fedex usually starts at 9pm but it depends where you are on their route. You will get it by 7 pm though, don’t worry.

Causes of Chicken Pox

Causes of Chicken Pox

Definition of Varicella (Chicken Pox)
Varicella, otherwise known as chicken pox, is a generalized infection caused by the varicella zoster virus. It is an extremely contagious disease that is characterized by a blistery rash. It occurs most frequently in children, between the ages of five and eight. Less than 20 percent of all cases in the U.S. affect people over the age of 15. Chicken pox is transmitted so easily that almost everyone gets the disease.

Chickenpox is a highly contagious illness caused by primary infection with varicella zoster virus (VZV). It generally begins with conjunctival and catarrhal symptoms and then characteristic spots appearing in two or three waves, mainly on the body and head rather than the hands and becoming itchy raw pockmarks, small open sores which heal mostly without scarring.

Chickenpox is very common in children, and it tends to only cause mild illness (for more information see Related topics). Once you have had chickenpox, you usually become immune to it for life, although on rare occasions people can catch it again.

Causes of Chicken Pox

In a typical scenario, a young child is covered in pox and out of school for a week. The first half of the week the child feels miserable from intense itching; the second half from boredom. Since the introduction of the chickenpox vaccine, classic chickenpox is much less common.

Chickenpox is extremely contagious, and can be spread by direct contact, droplet transmission, and airborne transmission. Even those with mild illness after the vaccine may be contagious.

When someone becomes infected, the pox usually appear 10 to 21 days later. People become contagious 1 to 2 days before breaking out with pox. They remain contagious while uncrusted blisters are present.

A person who has chickenpox can transmit the virus for up to 48 hours before the telltale rash appears and remains contagious until all spots crust over.

The Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) causes chickenpox. The disease is highly contagious — over 90% of nonimmune individuals will develop chickenpox following exposure. VZV is communicable by both direct skin-to-skin contact and via respiratory droplets (for example, coughing, sneezing) from the infected individual

Chicken Pox Symptoms
Low grade fever, a mild headache and weakness
Chicken pox usually begins with a low grade fever, a mild headache and a feeling of weakness.
Rash appears on the upper chest or back
Fever
Abdominal pain or loss of appetite
Mild headache

Symptoms tend to appear 14 to 16 days after the initial exposure but can occur any time from 10 days up to 21 days after contact with the virus. Chickenpox is characterized by one to two days of mild fever up to 102 degrees F, general weakness, and a rash, often the first sign of the disease

It’s caused by a virus that’s spread from person to person in droplets. Infection starts with a fever and about 2 days later the rash begins, usually on your back, first as red flat areas

Treatment of Varicella (Chicken Pox)

Cut the fingernails or use gloves to prevent skin damage from intense scratching. When lesions occur in the mouth, gargling with salt water may provide comfort. Drink cold fluids, and avoid hot, spicy and acidic foods (orange juice).

Most people develop lifetime immunity to chickenpox after the first occurrence and never experience it again. But the virus can sometimes resurface later in life as shingles (zoster). The current aim in the U.S. and many other countries is to achieve universal (or nearly universal) immunization of children with the chickenpox vaccine.

Complications do develop, your doctor will determine the appropriate treatment. Treatment for skin infections and pneumonia may be with antibiotics. Treatment for encephalitis is usually with antiviral drugs. Hospitalization may be necessary.

Some doctors also give antiviral medicines to people in the same household who subsequently come down with chickenpox. Because of their increased exposure, they would normally experience a more severe case of chickenpox.

Herpes Overview

Herpes Overview

Genital herpes is an STD caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), which is in the same family of viruses responsible for chickenpox, shingles and mononucleosis (commonly called “mono” or “the kissing disease”). HSV can occur in two forms: HSV-1, which infects 80 percent of the U.S. population, usually appears on the lips in cold sores; HSV-2 is usually found in the genital area. However, if a person with HSV-1 (cold sores) performs oral sex, their partner may contract HSV-1 in the genitals. Likewise, participating in oral sex can spread genital herpes to the mouth in some rare cases.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) more than 1 out of 5 teens and adults are infected with genital herpes. It’s more commonly found in African Americans than in Caucasian Americans, and more common in women than in men.

Genital herpes occurrences are different for each infected person. Outbreaks can be experienced for years. Some people have frequent outbreaks each year, while others experience only a few. Some factors that have been attributed to causing outbreaks are:

* Stress

* Menstruation

* Immune system suppression, caused by medications like steroids or chemotherapy, or infections like HIV

* Sickness

* Surgical procedure or organ transplant

* Friction, often caused by vigorous sexual intercourse or exercise

* Tiredness

Genital herpes outbreaks (http://herpes-virus.org/treatments.htm)often appear in the same area each time. Symptoms, however, may not always appear in exactly the same place. It is not uncommon for a lesion to appear on the genitals in one recurrence and near the anus in another instance. In some instances, the outbreak can be active and transmittable even without the presence of lesions.

It is common for people who contract genital herpes to experience mild to no symptoms at all. Therefore, they are unaware of infection. If symptoms do occur, the initial outbreak arises in the appearance of extremely painful skin lesions.

In women sores may emerge in and around the vaginal area and within the cervix. In men, sores may appear on the penis and scrotum. If the area under the foreskin is affected, scabs may not develop, the sore will heal slowly without scarring. Both males and females may also get lesions in other areas of the body including, but not limited to: the urinary tract, around the anal opening, buttocks or thighs. Once blisters have ruptured, small sores appear. And if these sores are irritated by water or urine, they may be painful. Ultimately, these sores form a crusty overlay and scab over.

About 80% of people with genital herpes are undiagnosed which means that the virus is passed on to other partners. Infrequent diagnosis and ignorance about the virus make herpes the most common STD in the world.

However, when diagnosed properly, people who have genital herpes can become proactive about their health and take advantage of treatments that may reduce frequency and duration of outbreaks. Treatment (http://herpes-virus.org/treatments.htm)can also reduce the risk of transmitting genital herpes to sexual partners.

Your Questions About Shingles

Richard asks…

what has caused my shingles?

im 19 female, and have already had shingles once end of last year, now i have a similar shingle spot on my back giving me the same pain. I havent been run down and am not sexually active so why do i keep getting it??
i kno what shingles is, and yeh ive had chicken pox as a kid… just wondering if there are any other deseases that i may have that could be weakenening my immune system to allow the shingles, for the 22nd time

admin answers:

My brother has it i think they said because he didnt have chicken pox as a kid and came into contact on someone that had it at one point and thats how he got it? I dont know but he was only 33 when he got which is still young for shingles. You will have it forever and if you’re stressed out sick or not getting enough sleep, a lot of things can cause you to have an “outbreak” of it so to speak. You dont have to be sexually active to even contract it. You could just have a weak immune system and this is why you got it to begin with. I have a weak immune system too i get sick really easy. And i have genital herpes and when im stressed out really bad or sick i have had an outbreak. Just need to try to eat good take multi-vitamin daily and stay stress free.

But i also have muscle pain in the same spots….then a few days later i see 3 small areas on that same leg that looks like a little blistery rash….I went to my doctors, and he gave me a muscle relaxer, and motrin. I showed him the spots on my leg and said it wasn’t Shingles , I just pulled a muscle….But I looked up my symptoms, and my little rashes look like shingles 2 me….is my doctor a moron?…is it just coincidence?..I’m only 27 is that too young for shingles…should i get blood work if I’m too young for it?…is back and leg pain part of the symptoms of shingles too?..What causes it….please help!

admin answers:

Shingles follow the path of a nerve and it does sound like you could have shingles because it has traveled the same path as your sciatic nerve. The doctor you consulted may not have been familiar with the look so it might be a good idea to get a second opinion. If the rash is beginning to clear up on it own then antiviral cream probably won’t be necessary. Yes,shingles are the result of a reactivation of the virus that causes chicken pox. When you have chicken pox the virus never leaves your body,it just goes dormant and mutates so it is not quite the same virus. In case you were wondering, shingles is not contagious,I mean no one can catch shingles from you but if they haven’t had chicken pox or been immunized against them, they can catch chicken pox from you by coming into contact with the rash or the drainage. Because stress can reactivate the virus, a traumatic life event , another serious illness or injury can bring on shingles in some people. If the rash gets worse, definitely see another doctor for antiviral medication

Lizzie asks…

Shingles in someone in their thirties?!?

My best friend just told me she was diagnosed w/ shingles. She’s been over to my house a lot recently and I’ve never had chickenpox. She told me that she was told several things that don’t make much sense to me. Her doctor said: shingles was cause by the measles vaccine, that it wasn’t contagious, and that most people get shingles right around her age! She swears that this is what her doctor said (she’s also a vet tech so I’d be shocked if she misunderstood what disease he said). I always thought it was a reimmergence of the chicken pox virus and that while Shingles wasn’t contagious, that they could give other people chicken pox. Also, I thought that most people get it when they’re older. Is there some other rash that IS caused by the measles vaccine that the doctor might’ve meant? Am I incorrect about this?
I’ve called my doctor and he agrees w/ you all. It’s from the chicken pox vaccine. He said it would be highly unlikely for me to get chicken pox from her unless I touched her blisters (which of course I haven’t/wouldn’t). Thanks for the help.

admin answers:

You are correct. The doctor was probably throwing alot of info at her at once and she misunderstood.
You can get shingles at any age, we have seen people in their early 20’s, as long as you have had chicken pox, you can get shingles (herpes zoster). It is not HIGHLY contagious, you have to have skin to skin contact with the area so as long as your not touching her blisters, you will be ok.

Mandy asks…

anyone know what does lesions caused by reduviid bug’s bite look like?

last week,i realized there’re rashes (more like red patches) appear on my thigh.i did’nt feel anything at that time..but after about about 2 days it develops into a group of blisters. i thought it was because of insect bite because a night b4 that i felt something biting my leg but i jz ignore it. i noticed there’s an insect that looks like reduviid bug.
3days later, i went to see a doctor and she said that it’s not caused by insect bite, instead i might be having shingles (caused by varicella zoster).so she prescribed me with 5-days supply of acyclovir.
the question is, could it be the lesions i have is actually caused by reduviid bug’s bite n misdiagnosed as shingles? if yes, is it possible for reduviid bug to just bite without carrying parasite that causes chagas disease? another thing is, i feel my vision becomes a bit blurry nowadays..is it the effect of acyclovir that i take?

i’m really worried right now..thnx a lot 4 ur help.

If you had shingles you would definately know it!!!!!!
They are unbelievably painful and disgusting as hell.
What you have couldnt possibly be shingle and the acyclovir was wrongly prescribed.
Shingles last exactly 7 days as do chicken pox (the virus one must have previously had in order to get shingles)
They appear in one general area, I had them on my head, and look like a large mass of oozing flesh. There is always a great deal of pain associated with them, so bad that 850mg of vicadin is prescribed for adult along with the acyclovir.
