What you need to know about Valtrex?

What you need to know about Valtrex?

Valtrex, an antiviral drug, is used to slow down the growth of herpes and stop it from spreading in the body. This medication does not cure herpes, but it certainly reduces the symptoms of the infection. This medication is used to treat infections that are caused by herpes viruses in both, children and adults. It helps in treatment of genital herpes, chickenpox, shingles and cold sores. Children who are at least 12 years old, can use Valtrex for treatment of cold sores.

Before taking Valtrex

It is advisable to stay away from this medication if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. Do not take it even if you are allergic to valacyclovir or acyclovir (Zovirax). If you are suffering from AIDS, kidney problems or a weak immune system, inform your doctor about it. Also tell the doctor if you had a recent bone marrow transplant. This medication might be harmful to the body, if used together with other drugs that can harm the kidneys. Always tell your doctor if you are using other medications. The doctor will help you in adjustment of your dose with other medications.

This medication shows the best results if you start taking it within the first few hours of the outbreak. You should start your treatment with Valtrex as soon as you see or feel any symptoms, such as burning or blisters. Do not give this medication to a child, unless a doctor has prescribed it. Old people are more susceptible to the side effects of this drug, than other adults. This is because of their age and weak immune system. This medication is known to pass in to breast milk and it is not advisable to take it if you are nursing an infant.

How to take it?

Take this medication as it is prescribed to you. Do not take it in larger or smaller amounts than prescribed, and ensure that you complete the whole course. It can be taken with or without food. Take this medication with a full glass of water. Drink a lot of water when you are taking Valtrex so that your kidneys work properly. Even if the infection starts reducing before the course is over, complete the whole course.

Store this medication at room temperature and keep it away from moisture and heat. If you are prescribed Valtrex liquid, store it in the refrigerator, but do not freeze it. You should throw away used Valtrex, if it is older than 28 days. Do not overdose under any circumstances. If you miss a dose, take the next one and carry on with the cycle. Do not double dose to cover up. If you think you have taken too much of this medication, call the doctor immediately.

Herpes is a virus that can pass from a mother to a child during childbirth. If you have genital herpes, it is imperative that you prevent any lesions at the time of your pregnancy or during it by using Valtrex.

Cure For Itchy Scalp

Cure For Itchy Scalp

Article by Anne Cresacre

So you’re looking for a cure for itchy scalp? Well, the good news is that, in most cases, an itchy scalp can be cured and soothed quite easily with a simple home remedy.

An itchy scalp can be an irritating and annoying affliction and, without treatment, can become increasingly worse. Although there are many possible reasons for an itchy scalp, a lot of the time these days it can be due to the harsh chemicals placed in many of the off-the-shelf shampoos and conditioners on the market. These chemicals can dry out the skin, stripping it of its natural oils and thereby causing an itchy, flaky scalp. One of the worst of these chemicals is Sodium Laureth Sulphate – commonly known as SLS which is an aggressive cleaning and foaming agent commonly used as an engine degreaser. SLS has been proven to strip oils from and prematurely age your skin, damage eye membranes, retard healing, inhibit hair follicle growth and more, yet it’s added to 90% of shampoos! Silicone is another harmful chemical used as an artificial shine enhancer in many leading brand conditioners.

Other possible reasons for an itchy scalp could be stress brought on by exhaustion or emotional tension, an allergic skin reaction (contact dermatitis), viral infections, such as chickenpox and shingles or a skin condition, such as acne.

I would recommend trying to replace your current shampoo with a natural one, like a Tea Tree Oil based shampoo. Tea Tree Oil is a fantastic anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory natural ingredient which will help to soothe your itchy scalp and prevent infections. Other great natural oils to look out for when choosing a shampoo or conditioner are Zinc Pyrithione and Jojoba. Zinc pyrithione is great at combating dandruff and as a cure for itchy scalp conditions. First synthesized in the 1930’s, it is the most widely used active ingredient from a natural source. Having good anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties it’s used to treat dandruff, itchy scalp, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema and numerous other skin and scalp disorders. Jojoba is excellent as a scalp moisturiser and helps to re-balance sebum.

Reducing stress will help your body in its natural healing process, and also go some way to preventing your itchy scalp condition from returning. Prevention is better than a cure, as they say. Use some natural bath oils like Lavender or Valerian Oil to help you to relax and de-stress after a hard day.

(As with all oils, consult your doctor first if you are pregnant. It is also recommended you patch test all oils/formulas before application or addition to your shampoos).

A quick cure for itchy scalp can be made at home by using a combination or Rosemary and Chamomile:

Get 3 sprigs of rosemary, chop them up and add to 3 tea bags of chamomile tea. Boil gently, let cool, strain and rinse your hair with this liquid for a calming anti-inflammatory effect for an inflamed, itchy or sore scalp.

Your Questions About Shingles

Betty asks…

What kind of rash is this?

So about a week and a half ago i walked a dog (not my dog) and went through a short trail near a nice neighborhood with trees, a stream, and small bushes. I’m not sure if it’s poison ivy, but a couple days afterwards, I got a few itchy red dots on my cheek and as each day went by it got worse and worse. My whole left cheek was swollen with rash and it was hard too. It later spread to my arm as well.

My cheek is starting to heal now, but tiny new rashes started to spread again below my eyes on each side. I would feel itchy all over my body and occasionally, when I scratch, I’d find “bug bites” which I’m not sure if they are. Also, recently the area on my forearm (near my elbow) started to itch and I instinctively scratched it because it wasn’t on my rash. There’s no rash there but that area is a little swollen and heated up now. After doing some research, I had a guess that it might be shingles because the rash looks exactly the same (small blisters in patches), but these other symptoms make it confusing

I went to the doctors a couple days ago and he prescribed me some antibiotics and a cream. I’m gonna be going back on friday, but I was just wondering if anyone else experienced these symptoms too. What kind of rash is this? Shingles? Poison Ivy? I’ve done a lot of research, but I’m still confused.

Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance!! šŸ™‚

Thomas asks…

How common is it to get Shingles without pain?

I went to my doctor yesterday and was diagnosed with Shingles. The symptoms started last week when I noticed a swollen lymph node behind my ear. I woke up Saturday with flu like symptoms and more swollen lymph nodes. Monday I had a mono test and it was negative. Then Tuesday (yesterday) I woke up with a minor rash on the right side of my forehead and scalp and went back to the doctor. He knew immediately that is was shingles and now I’m off work for a week since I work with kids. The lesions got worse yesterday but not overnight. He prescribed Valtrex. I have itchiness and it feels dry but no pain. I’m only 28 and can’t believe I have this since I have a strong immune system. Will I still experience pain even though I’m on medication now? The lesions on my forehead stayed the same over night and it didn’t hurt to gently wash my face this morning. Does anyone else have experience with these symptoms? Also, does it hurt to shower?

admin answers:

The actual shingles itself doesn’t incur pain. They may itch a little at times. But overall, the pain normally occurs a few days before the actual breakout. You may feel as if you have the flu- body aches and pain. May have a low grade fever and such- but all this is BEFORE the shingles outbreak. It can also make your body feel sore as if you had an extensive work-out the day before. It doesn’t hurt to shower. But placing a cold compress on te affected area will relieve the deep burning sensation under the affected area.

Sandra asks…

I may have shingles, and I have a 3-week old baby. Can I breastfeed or be around him at all?

I go to the dr. in the morning. I had internal shingles 2 years ago (no rash/sores), and I am having the same symptoms.

admin answers:

Yes continue to breastfeed as long as your baby doesn’t have any immunity issues

Susan asks…

Is it possible to pass on chicken pox from somone with shingles?

The landlady of my local pub has just been diagnosed with shingles.

We were in there last weekend while she was working, and a day or so later my Little one (18mth old) became slightly ill. she wasn’t poorly just a bit out of sorts and clingy. Now she has come out in a rash that looks a little like chicken pox. Is it possible that either me or my husband has passed the virus on, even if we hvae both had chicken pox and have no symptoms?

admin answers:

Yes it’s possible. Although Shingles itself is not contagious (i.e. A person with Shingles can’t pass Shingles onto another person), someone with Shingles can pass the chickenpox virus to someone else who has never had it before.

Unless your child had contact with your landlady it’s probably unlikely that she picked it up from there. The rash may not be chicken pox, if you are concerned, see your GP.

Nancy asks…

Any Doctors out there ? I am having some strange symptoms and also have no medical insurance.?

My blood presure is running around 145 over 90. I have a slight reddening of the skin, I am also nauseated with some fatigue and a slight constant headache that tylenol does not seem to help much. I am 60 years old with no prior heart or high blood pressure history no chest pain or dizzyness I also have shingles but the rash is small and recurring. I take acyclovir. Any ideas ? except go to the doctor.

admin answers:

Hi Susan,

You are suffering side effects of acyclovir darling. That is the cause of all of your symptoms. The blood pressure isn’t high enough to be overly concerned about but keep an eye on it. If the diastolic (bottom figure) goes up to or above 100 then see your GP or practice nurse and mention it to them.

If the side effects continue after a few days of being on the medication, tell your doctor but they shouldn’t last for too long.

Hope this helps.

Fioricet Pain Medication

Fioricet basically uses a combination of different drugs. The medicine is made up of acetaminophen, butalbital and caffeine. The combined effect of these drugs is known to work very well.

What You Should Know About Debt

What You Should Know About Debt

Article by David Bean

Debt. It can be a wonderful tool or a terrible task master! Unfortunately, for many people, they casually court debt as if it is something simple and compassionate instead of recognizing it as what it really is–ruthless, cold, and indifferent. What gives debt all of its teeth? It is nothing less than “interest.” Interest is what makes debt so powerful. With this more accurate understanding it is easy to see where the attribute of debt, interest, can be a very handy guy to have on your side or a very formidable foe to fight. The following explanation of interest sums up the nature of debt nicely: “Interest never sleeps nor sickens nor dies; it never goes to the hospital; it works on Sundays and holidays; it never takes a vacation; it never visits nor travels; it takes no pleasure; it is never laid off work nor discharged from employment; it never works on reduced hours; it never has short crops nor droughts; it never pays taxes; it buys no food; it wears no clothes; it is unhoused and without home and so has no repairs, no replacements, no shingling, plumbing, painting, or whitewashing; it has neither wife, children, father, mother, nor kinfolk to watch over and care for; it has no expense of living; it has neither weddings nor births nor deaths; it has no love, no sympathy; it is as hard and soulless as a granite cliff. Once in debt, interest is your companion every minute of the day and night; you cannot shun it or slip away from it; you cannot dismiss it; it yields neither to entreaties, demands, or orders; and whenever you get in its way or cross its course or fail to meet its demands, it crushes you”vyou” (J. Reuben Clark Jr. in Conference Report, Apr. 1938:103).;

Sadly, too many people find themselves slaves to this monster called debt instead of truly enjoying life. Debt and money problems rank up there among the top reasons why there is so much of divorce, unhappy homes, marriages, and even suicide. The following two key suggestions can help you change the tables of stress-filled worry to peace of mind. They are proven remedies and can make all the difference in the world.

Suggestion #1: Do not, ever, go into debt for consumer goods or purchases. By “consumer goods or purchases” I mean perishable items that have no intrinsic or substantive value for your well-being, or that can add value to your situation. For example, food, toys, trips, jewelry, entertainment, wants, etc. All of these things, while pleasurable and nice, do not add any value to your need or betterment in life. Good examples of items worth going in debt for might include vehicles for transportation, a home, and an education. All of these examples are necessary, or “critical” to insure for a better quality life in the future. Other than for these kinds of critical items you should adopt the practice of “don’t buy it unless you can pay cash for it.”

Suggestion #2: Develop a modest and workable budget and stick to it. Budgets help define what is and what isn’t necessary in your day-to-day living. Budgets position you where you can identify real needs and differentiate them from the wants. More financial problems and serious debt come to individuals who do not learn to identify needs from wants than just about anything else. Establishing a budget will help reduce common financial mistakes that many fall into who otherwise would not have done so with a good budget outlining their spending habits.

Following these simple yet powerful suggestions can put you on the road to a much more stress-free life. The peace of mind that accompanies those who “owe no one anything” is a great feeling. It empowers you to make better choices for your life. Instead of reacting in crisis mode, you will find that you can make decisions based on purpose and meaning. Your Questions About Shingles

Mary asks…

Can you have shingles without a rash?

I am only 21 and I went to the doctor yesterday for an intense pain in my left arm that went up to my shoulder and into my back. I could not touch my skin because it was so sensitive to touch for 2 days and hurting for 2 days. Only my left arm was achy and I was fatiged and weak still only on one side. Yesterday my doctor examines me and says he is almost positive I have shingles but he cannot diagnose it since I do not have a rash anywhere. He put me on a seven day course of acyclovir. Is it possible to have shingles without the rash and if I caught it early, will the medicine prevent the rash from coming at all? My symptoms have gotten better since yesterday.

admin answers:

I have had shingles outbreaks several times and i have never had much of a rash at the outset. A few tiny blisters and the rash have typically developed a week or more after the pain began.

Donald asks…

Anyone have Shingles without the dark red rash?

I think what I might have is shingles. Six weeks ago during a very hot spell while working in the yard I got a tingling and sharp, burning pain in my lower back just to the left of the Spine, about the size of a small fist. The pain didn’t radiate so I knew it wasn’t an ongoing back problem I’ve had for years.
The sharp, burning pain lasted for hours. It reoccured daily for the next week, calming only if I sat or laid quietly.
A week later it appeared that I had been bitten by a flea a few times in the same area…4 little itchy bumps. I still have the sharp, burning pain during the day if I’m even a little bit active. Doctor said it could be shingles but feels more that it is a pulled muscle and he wants me to let it go for a couple more weeks to see if it subsides. I’ve never known a pulled muscle in the lower back to burn. And the little red flea bite-type bumps…coincidence?
Can anyone offer any insight as to pulled muscle or Shingles?
I will greatly appreciate any responses.
I want to thank each and every person here who responded to my question.
I have an appointment with an MD on Tuesday and I’ve copied all your responses so that I can take them with me.
I want to be as informed as I can be and I want to be able to ask all the right questions.

Your responses provided me with the ammunition to do just that.

After a very painful few more days I still had the strange itch with slight burn on the surface of the area and the stabbing hot pain just under the surface of the skin so Friday morning I started my search for a new doctor who would take new patients.

It wasn’t an easy task but after a couple hours I found a Dermo who wasn’t able to take me without a referral but he did refer me to a doctor that would take on a new patient.

Thank you everyone, so very much.
Your advice, opinions and concern helped me more than you’ll ever know.

Lady M

admin answers:

Shingles does not cause a dark red rash. It caused red blister like spots usually in a line. When you have shingles you can almost always see the familiar look of shingles spots as the run along a nerve line. You didn’t mention having those familiar spots so I tend to feel like your doc that it is not shingles.

Laura asks…

Severe skin pain without a rash, itching or redness?

This is actually fairly reoccurring on me, but I currently have a patch of skin on my left front of my thigh from the hip to the knee that hurts and burns really badly when i touch it, or when clothes touches it, and at the moment, without either stimulus!
It feels like my entire muscle is deteriorating in there, even a little breeze makes it hurt. There is NO rash, no bumps, no redness, it’s not warm to the touch.. i haven’t changed detergent, used different soap, shaved recently, gotten into any chemicals.. ate foods i normally don’t eat.. nothing!
It really hurts a lot! i just took some tylonel pm.. so hopefully that helps..
this has also happened in both of my arms and legs before, i feel like its dissolving my flesh, then will go away after a day or so? any ideas on causes? None of the times in the past has it ever broken into a rash and its been going on for a year, so i don’t think its shingles or anything.. hmm?

admin answers:

If this has been going on for a year, i think its long enough. You need to talk to a doctor, and find out what is really wrong with you. This sounds really painful, and why suffer needlessly? Go and see him, ok?

Mandy asks…

can u have internal shingles without the rash on outside of skin?

my husband has tingling, burning and pain on his right side and we cannot find out what it is

admin answers:

You don’t mention how long your husband has had this pain. The first sign of shingles is often one-sided burning pain; after several days to a week the blisters may then appear.

Yes, the pain may be present without the appearance of blisters!

Read about shingles, their causes, and how to treat them at

Michael asks…

if you present with an early sign of shingles ex. pain in upper back and around waist headache etc but have no

rash at that time and take antivaral meds does that prevent the rash from forming, has anyone experienced shingles without a rash?

admin answers:

Have you been diagnosed w/having shingles? This is very painful. The rash can be anywhere on your body, even on your scalp. Alot of other things can present the same symptoms, hope you’ve been to a doc.

How antiviral medications can help reduce asymptomatic viral shedding in herpes?

How antiviral medications can help reduce asymptomatic viral shedding in herpes?

Article by Tom Howarth

Herpes is an infection that is transmitted from one person to another by physical contact. Herpes simplex virus type-2, commonly known as HSV-2, causes genital herpes. Most people do not experience any symptoms for days or even months after getting infected with HSV-2. This is because herpes simplex virus can remain dormant or inactive in the body without showing any symptoms. It resides in nerve cells and other tissues. But when HSV-2 becomes active, it travels nerve pathways up to the surface of skin and cause outbreak of symptoms.Herpes symptomsUsually, the first outbreak of herpes develops within 2 to 20 days after physical contact with an infected person and can continue up to 2 weeks. These symptoms are sometimes so mild that they often go unnoticed. The first outbreak of genital herpes symptoms includes skin ulcers, painful red blisters, fever, pain while urinating, and genital discharge. Later outbreaks are less severe as compared to the first one and include blisters and ulcers, burning sensation around the genitals, and red sores. What is viral shedding?During an outbreak of herpes, herpes simplex virus-2 surfaces to skin and viral shedding occurs. Usually, shedding of virus occurs at the site of infections. It is during this period that the herpes virus is considered contagious and can therefore be spread through direct skin-to-skin contact with the infected area. But it is also possible that the herpes virus could be actively shedding at the site of infection without showing any symptoms. This condition is referred to as ‘asymptomatic viral shedding.’ Let’s look at some of the facts about herpes viral shedding:

Herpes simplex virus-1 that mainly causes oral herpes is less likely to shed compared to herpes simplex virus-2 that causes genital herpes. If you can avoid skin-to-skin contact with the infected area, the chances of spreading the virus because of viral shedding is low. Some people never show any symptoms of herpes, but can still transmit the virus to others. In half of the symptomatic cases, herpes viral shedding is estimated to occur in 7 days before and after an outbreak of symptoms. How to reduce risk of viral shedding? The shedding of herpes simplex virus at an infection site cannot be eliminated, but it can be reduced with some precautions and antiviral medications. In between outbreak of symptoms, latex condoms should be used during sexual intercourse to protect against viral shedding. But if there are any visible signs or symptoms of outbreak, any contact with the infected area should be avoided. Antiviral medications are commonly prescribed for treatment of first outbreak of symptoms and controlling later outbreaks. Valtrex (valaciclovir) is a prescription antiviral medications recommended for genital herpes treatment. It reduces the growth and spread of herpes simplex virus and thus help fight off the infection. For genital herpes, a dosage of Valtrex 500mg is prescribed for 5-10 days. For cold sores, Valtrex pill should be taken for 3 days and for shingles, it should be taken for 7 days. If you miss a dose of Valtrex, you should take the missed dose as soon as possible.

What are Herpes?

What are Herpes?

Article by Sallie Pinkerton

Herpes are a group of viruses that causes a lot of human illnesses. There are at least five different herpes viruses that could infect humans: herpes simplex-1, which causes cold sores; herpes simplex-2, the cause of genital herpes; herpes zoster, these causes chicken pox and shingles; Epstein-Barr virus that causes infectious mononucleosis; and cytomegalovirus, which can cause birth defects in infants.

Herpes is transferred when you come in contact with an active lesion or body fluid of an infected person. They are highly contagious and are closely associated with the cause of human cancer. When herpes attacks the body, the body’s immune system fights back. When this goes on, the body may lose the ability to defend itself from attacks of other viruses. Although herpes viruses can lay dormant, they may be activated after several years due to the body’s association with other conditions that lower the body’s resistance to infection.

There is no known cure for herpes infections yet, but antiviral medication can reduce the frequency, duration and severity of the outbreaks. Prevention can also protect others from acquiring herpes infections. As with other sexually transmitted diseases, women have the tendency to acquire herpes simplex-2. Using condoms can offer moderate protection against this virus on both men and women. Touching any type of herpes sore may help spread the virus from one partner to another or from one part of the body to another. When you have sores, refrain from touching them. When you do, always wash your hands with water and soap. If you have cold sores on your mouth, avoid kissing anyone especially infants, children and pregnant women.

When you have herpes infection, always remember that you are not alone. Seek medical help from doctors and licensed physician. There are also support groups that will help people with herpes deal with this kind of illness. There are many people that will help you out, do not be ashamed when you are in this situation.
