What are Herpes?
Article by Sallie Pinkerton
Herpes are a group of viruses that causes a lot of human illnesses. There are at least five different herpes viruses that could infect humans: herpes simplex-1, which causes cold sores; herpes simplex-2, the cause of genital herpes; herpes zoster, these causes chicken pox and shingles; Epstein-Barr virus that causes infectious mononucleosis; and cytomegalovirus, which can cause birth defects in infants.
Herpes is transferred when you come in contact with an active lesion or body fluid of an infected person. They are highly contagious and are closely associated with the cause of human cancer. When herpes attacks the body, the body’s immune system fights back. When this goes on, the body may lose the ability to defend itself from attacks of other viruses. Although herpes viruses can lay dormant, they may be activated after several years due to the body’s association with other conditions that lower the body’s resistance to infection.
There is no known cure for herpes infections yet, but antiviral medication can reduce the frequency, duration and severity of the outbreaks. Prevention can also protect others from acquiring herpes infections. As with other sexually transmitted diseases, women have the tendency to acquire herpes simplex-2. Using condoms can offer moderate protection against this virus on both men and women. Touching any type of herpes sore may help spread the virus from one partner to another or from one part of the body to another. When you have sores, refrain from touching them. When you do, always wash your hands with water and soap. If you have cold sores on your mouth, avoid kissing anyone especially infants, children and pregnant women.
When you have herpes infection, always remember that you are not alone. Seek medical help from doctors and licensed physician. There are also support groups that will help people with herpes deal with this kind of illness. There are many people that will help you out, do not be ashamed when you are in this situation.
