Acyclovir is used to treat herpes infections of the skin, lip, and genitals; herpes zoster (shingles); and chickenpox. It does not cure herpes infections but decreases pain and itching and promotes healing. Topical Acyclovir does not prevent the recurrence of sores but may decrease pain and itching if applied when the earliest symptoms first appear. Oral Acyclovir decreases the frequency and severity of recurrent sores, but it is used only by people with severe herpes infections because of possible adverse effects.    How Taken

Treatment with Acyclovir topical should be started as soon as possible after the first appearance of symptoms (e.g. tingling, burning, blisters). Wash your hands before and after applying Acyclovir topical. Wear a glove or a finger cot or use an applicator (e.g. cotton swab) when applying Acyclovir topical to avoid spreading the virus to other body parts and to other people. Apply enough ointment to cover the lesion(s) completely. A one-half inch ribbon of ointment should cover approximately 4 square inches of surface area. Avoid getting this medication in the eyes. Acyclovir topical is usually applied every 3 hours, six times a day for seven days. Follow your doctor\’s instructions. Use Acyclovir topical for the full amount of time prescribed, even if you begin to feel better. Your symptoms may start to improve before the infection is completely treated. Lesions caused by herpes viruses should be kept as clean and dry as possible. Wearing loose clothing may help to prevent irritation of the lesions.

   Warnings/Precautions

Before using Acyclovir topical, tell your doctor if you have any other medical conditions or if you use any other medications. Acyclovir topical is in the FDA pregnancy category C, which means that it is not known whether it will harm an unborn baby. Do not use Acyclovir topical without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant. It is not known whether Acyclovir topical passes into breast milk. Do not use Acyclovir topical without first talking to your doctor if you are breast feeding a baby.

   Missed Dose

Apply it as soon as you remember and apply further doses at your regular interval (e.g., every 3 hours) until you go to bed. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

   Possible Side Effects

No serious side effects are expected during treatment with Acyclovir topical. If you suspect an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; rash; hives; itching; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face) seek emergency medical attention. Other less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to use Acyclovir topical and talk to your doctor if you experience itching, stinging, burning, or a rash. These side effects should resolve quickly. Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

Store below 25oC. Do not refrigerate.

   Overdose

An overdose of this medication is not likely to occur. If you suspect an overdose or ingestion of Acyclovir topical, call an emergency room or poison control left for advice.

should we isolate the patient if he/she got herpes zoster(shingles)?

Herpes Zoster is contagious, it is important to contain the drainage from the blisters as persons coming in contact with the drainage can contact the virus. This is the virus responsible for chicken pox so children and pregnant women are going to be most at risk, so I would stay away from them. As long as you keep the drainage contained with dressings and clothing the general public should be okay. Also make sure you dispose of the dressings promptly in a sealed bag (I’m assuming you’re at home) this would be red bagged in a health care facility, as it would be infectious waste.

I’m diagnosed with herpes zoster/shingles?

it’s been 2 days. and this coming saturday, i’m going for a drink with my friends. will drinking alcoholic drinks cause my condition to be worse? what about a tad bit of alcohol, is that alright? thanks in advance.

Basically you have the adult form of chicken pox. If you are on any anti-virals alcohol may harm it’s effectiveness. It is best to ask your doc. Normally doctors prescribe acyclovir for shingles. It is advised to drink plenty of fluids while on these types of medication and since alcohol dehydrates it may be wise to steer clear of alcohol until you seek professional advice.

With energy prices rising higher and higher with no end in sight, these days, the question of how does solar power work is firing up the curiosity of many money-conscious families and individuals. Solar panels are lines with a semiconductor than generates electricity when the sun’s rays come in contact with it. Solar panels can also be constructed to heat both your water and air coming into the structure through your ventilation system. The electricity generated by the solar panels is then routed to your controller/regulator where the voltage/amperage is adjusted to your system’s needs then routed to your electrical system or storage system.

The essential parts of a solar power system consist of:

1. PV panels which are the solar or photovoltaic panels. 2. Current regulator which is a device for controlling the voltage or amperage of the electricity produced by the solar panel. 3 A storage system which is usually a group of batteries that will reserve for later use the power produced by the solar panels when the sun is up.

Depending on your location or the type of installation, solar panels can vary quite a bit in cost, For instance, if the building is industrial, and is located in a remote area, than you would probably use the typical box shaped panels. When it comes to commercial usage, solar panels can both be installed on the large roof space available on top of businesses and industrial buildings and on the ground in arrays of panels to generate even more solar power.

Solar panels can be mounted in a rooftop setup in addition to ground and pole mounts. The ground and pole mounts offer additional design flexibility especially when your structure is in the shade for part of the day. Solar panels can also be equipped with mechanisms that allow them to follow or “track” the sun throughout the day maximizing their exposure to the sun’s rays. One of the largest drawbacks to solar installation is of course sunset. This is remedied by installing a battery array or storage system, or using supplemental power from the utility company power grid.

Solar cells can be built right into the structure’s roof, awning, and window materials for those who are hoping for a more discreet installation that will also serve a dual purpose. If you own a residence and need a new roof, consider that there are available roofing materials with solar cells built in. This new material will provide the same functionality as an asphalt shingle while at the same time, operating as a solar panel. By using the new solar power design you’ll be to enjoy the benefits of solar power without the risk that your home will resemble someone’s idea of a space ship.
