Laura asks…
should we isolate the patient if he/she got herpes zoster(shingles)?

admin answers:
Herpes Zoster is contagious, it is important to contain the drainage from the blisters as persons coming in contact with the drainage can contact the virus. This is the virus responsible for chicken pox so children and pregnant women are going to be most at risk, so I would stay away from them. As long as you keep the drainage contained with dressings and clothing the general public should be okay. Also make sure you dispose of the dressings promptly in a sealed bag (I’m assuming you’re at home) this would be red bagged in a health care facility, as it would be infectious waste.

I’m diagnosed with herpes zoster/shingles?
it’s been 2 days. and this coming saturday, i’m going for a drink with my friends. will drinking alcoholic drinks cause my condition to be worse? what about a tad bit of alcohol, is that alright? thanks in advance.

admin answers:
Basically you have the adult form of chicken pox. If you are on any anti-virals alcohol may harm it’s effectiveness. It is best to ask your doc. Normally doctors prescribe acyclovir for shingles. It is advised to drink plenty of fluids while on these types of medication and since alcohol dehydrates it may be wise to steer clear of alcohol until you seek professional advice.

Shingles takes a long time to get over. If you are on medication, don’t drink or you could be facing a medical problem worse than shingles.

Couple questions on herpes zoster (shingles)?
These are answers i need…
METHOD OF TRANSMISSION
INCUBATION PERIOD
DURATION

admin answers:
Method of transmission, it is a reinfection of chicken pox when you where young.
Incubation period is from the time you got chicken pox to the time that zoster presented itself. The virus hides in your spinal cord for life.
Shingles last for a long, long time, you can never get rid of the herpes zoster that causes it. However the symptoms of zoster like pain and rash around the body can go away eventually.
