Knowledge is Power The STD Clinic and Herpes

Knowledge is Power The STD Clinic and Herpes

Article by Slava

If you are currently engaged in sexual activity (well, not at this EXACT moment but…) there are a ton of reasons why you should visit an STD clinic. Many STDs can and do have awful–and sometimes even deadly–repercussions. If there was a scale for awful, then infecting your significant other with herpes would probably be high atop that list. Herpes is mostly thought of as a hammer-over-your-head type disease, meaning that it must be obvious that you are infected. This is untrue, in fact, many people infected with the herpes virus are completely unaware that they are so.

Let’s take a look at the facts, shall we? According to some reports, approximately one in nine Americans are currently positive for genital herpes. When it comes to oral herpes, these same reports say that a whopping 80% of Americans are positive. 80%! No matter who you are there is no denying that these are startling statistics. If visiting an STD clinic will lower your odds of contracting–or passing on–this awful disease, then there’s no excuse for not visiting a clinic today.

Herpes are a real downer on the dating circuit according to the “Tell Me Something I Don’t Know” handbook. Joking aside, here are the facts that you should be aware of when it comes to protecting yourself from this way too-common illness.

What are herpes?Herpes are a series of viruses that even include chicken pox and shingles. When most people speak of herpes though, they are referring to one of two viruses. The HSV-1 virus causes oral herpes and the HSV-2 virus causes genital herpes.

What are the symptoms of herpes? The first symptoms typically show up two days after infection and can be so mild that they hardly register. The infected area will be itchy and may burn or tingle. This is followed by an outbreak of blisters. Once these blisters break they form painful sores.

Do all infected individuals show symptoms? No. According to some studies up to 60% of people who contract HSV-2 show no symptoms at all. These people may still easily pass the virus on to others. This is another reason why visiting an STD clinic for herpes testing is so important.

What is the testing procedure? There are varying tests to determine if an individual is positive for herpes. These include the herpes virus antigen detection test, a herpes viral culture, the polymerase chain reaction test (or PCR), and the antibody test. A certified STD clinic will be able to determine the best option for you.

Susan asks…

Mary asks…

Person with past SHINGLES, pulmonary and heart disease gets this every day…?

She had shingles two years ago exactly and complains of incredible itching every night a little while after dinner. And also at other times during the day. She’s in her eighties, has COPD and CHF, high blood pressure and atrial fibrillation. Is this itching for real (it is all over her back, but especially in part of the area where the shingles developed), or is it just another elderly persons’ “acquired” habit?

admin answers:

Yes, the itching is really there, and yes, it is probably still the shingles. Shingles is a viral infection, so it stays in your body for life and can pop back up just like any other viral infection. She should be taking valtrex or acyclovir to help this.

Thomas asks…

can the disease shingles be spread merely by touch of the person who has it?

how exactly does a person get it from another person

admin answers:

Shingles, or the Herpes Zoster virus, can be spread by touching the shingles rash if the rash is in the blistering stage. If the rash is drying and crusted over, the person is no longer contagious; the person is also not contagious before the blisters show up. If the person with shingles wears clothing over the rash, it would be very difficult to spread it to somebody else.

If the rash is everywhere on the person’s body, there is a higher risk of it spreading not only by contact, but also possibly by the airborne route.

Keep in mind that only a person who has never had chicken pox (or the chicken pox vaccine) need worry about avoiding contact with a person with shingles. A person who has had chicken pox cannot “catch” shingles from another.

Best wishes.

David asks…

What is Shingles disease?

I don’t have it, my cousin does and I’m staying away from her. She lives in another city thank god.

admin answers:

Herpes zoster is what many people call “shingles”.

The varicella-zoster virus, or VZV, is the virus that causes chicken pox. The virus runs its course and the disease goes through its stages. If the body is able to kill the virus, there won’t be long-term effects. If the body is unable to kill the virus, it will evetually retreat into spinal nerves and go dormant. Sometimes for years.

Often great and prolonged stress and/or poor immunity reactivate the VZV, bringing it out of hiding. It travels along the path of a nerve and the viral infection that results cause a herpes zoster outbreak. It typically affects one side of the torso, wrapping from mid-front to mid-back. It can however show up on the neck or face. It starts as a tingling that becomes painful and burning and becomes an itchy rash with blisters. There can be pain without the rash. There can be fever, headache, light sensitivity and abdominal upset. It’s not fatal but it can be extremely painful. The virus can affect internal organs as well.

The condition, herpes zoster, isn’t itself contagious but the virus, VZV, is contagious. It’s in the fluid in the blisters and can be transmitted though direct skin-to-skin contact. If someone has already had chicken pox or has been vaccinated against chicken pox, they cannot be affected. But if someone has not had chicken pox or been vaccinated, they can develop chicken pox. Herpes zoster (shingles) cannot be transmited from one person to another. An h. Zoster outbreak is contagious until all the blisters have erupted and crusted over. The entire process may take 3-4 weeks.

Although, if someone’s going to develop herpes zoster, they are usually over 50 but it can occur at any age, young or old and everything in between. There is a vaccine, Zostavax, recommended for adults over the age of 60 which can prevent h. Zoster or lessen the duration and severity of outbreaks. There are antiviral medications both oral and topical that can help relieve symptoms.

You can visit your cousin even when she’s having an outbreak, although she might not feel much like having company at that time, as long as you’re immune to the varicella-zoster virus, as long as she keeps the rash covered and as long as she and all her visitors practice frequent handwashing.

Valtrex: Dosage Guidelines

Valtrex: Dosage Guidelines

Article by Mac Millon

Valaciclovir (popularly known as Valtrex – a trade name owned by GlaxoSmithKline) is an anti-viral drug prescribed to manage herpes simplex and shingles (herpes zoster). Also marketed by Ranbaxy Laboratories in generic form, valaciclovir is prepared using the natural proteinogenic amino acid. Though Valtrex cannot cure the illnesses caused by the herpes virus, it mitigates the infection by curbing the growth of this virus, enabling the body to fight it.

Valtrex Dosage: Pre-Dose Considerations

Here are some things that you must take into account before taking a dose of Valtrex:

Avoid taking this drug if you have an allergy to valacyclovir or acyclovir.Certain conditions that affect immunity, such as HIV and kidney disease, require you to undergo some tests to ensure that taking Valtrex is safe.Any need for change in dose from the regular prescription must be confirmed with the doctor.Valtrex Dosage for Adults

The recommended dosage for adults is as follows in accordance with the condition:

Recurrent Episodes: Twice daily dose of 500 mg to be taken for three days.Suppressive Therapy for those with normal immunity: Single dose of 1 gram daily.Patients with history of nine or less recurrences a year: One dose of 500 mg once daily.HIV-infected patients: Twice daily dose of 500 mg.Reduction of Transmission: To reduce transmission of genital herpes, the source partner should take a single dose of 500 mg daily.Herpes Zoster: Three doses of 1 gram daily for one week. For therapy to be most effective, it needs to be administered within 48 hours of the symptoms becoming visible.Valtrex Dosage for Children

Doctors recommend the following dosage for pediatric medication:

Cold Sores (Herpes Labialis): For patients below 12 years of age, two doses of 2 grams to be taken at a gap of 12 hours on one day.Chickenpox: For immunocompetent patients between the age of 2 and 18, three doses of 20 mg/kg to be administered daily for five days. The upper limit for total dose is thrice daily doses of 1 gram.Valtrex Dosage: Other Situations

Applications Of Famvir

Applications Of Famvir

Article by Mac Millon

Famvir or Famciclovir is used to inhibit the spread and growth of the herpes virus and is not a cure for the virus itself. An anti viral agent, Famvir cannot cure herpes but can lessen the symptoms and the duration for which they last for infections caused by herpes. Doctors advise that treatment with Famvir should be started as soon as possible after the appearance of the infection symptoms. However, this drug should not be taken without a doctor’s prescription and should be avoided by patients having kidney related problems and are galactose intolerant. The medicine is generally prescribed to patients who are 18 years and above.

Famvir: How it Works

Famvir is used to treat infections arising from herpes viruses, like varicella zoster that causes shingles and herpes simplex, or HSV, which causes cold sores or genital herpes. This antiviral drug has an active substance – famciclovir – which works by blocking the production of DNA by the herpes virus. Thus, by stopping the multiplication of the virus, this drug restricts the growth of the virus and the consequent infection. This drug is available in the EU under various trade names like Famciclovir-Sandoz, Famciclovir-SB, Famciclovir-SB Zoster, Famvir Zoster and Oravir.

Therapeutic Indications of Famvir

Famvir is recommended for the treatment of:

Herpes Zoster or Shingles and Ophthalmic Zoster (shingles around the eye) in case of patients having a normal immune systemHerpes Zoster in case of patients with weaker immune systemsFirst and the recurrent occurrence of Genital Herpes in case of patients having a normal immune systemRecurrent occurrence of Genital Herpes in case of patients with weaker immune systemsSuppression of the recurrence of genital herpes in case of patients with normal immunity and patients with reduced levels of immunity.Famvir: Certain Important Facts and Information

Famvir should be taken only after a doctor prescribes it. Along with the consumption of this drug, patients need to take certain precautions, especially those who are suffering from Genital Herpes.

Since this is a sexually transmitted disease, patients should avoid intercourse when lesions or other symptoms are present to avoid the spread of the infection to their partner. The consumption of the drug can cause dizziness, confusion or some disturbances to the central nervous system in case of some patients. Such patients should avoid driving or operating any kind of machinery in such a scenario.People allergic to penciclovir cream should not take Famvir.Again patients who have had a kidney or a bone marrow transplant should not take this anti viral drug.People with rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, a severe lactase deficiency should not take Famvir tablets as they contain lactose.Avoid touching an infected area. You should drink lots of water while taking this medicine. The drug needs to be stored at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. The medication should be taken for the entire length prescribed by the doctor, even if the symptoms have improved

Low Back Pain Treatment In India At Affordable Low Cost

Low Back Pain Treatment In India At Affordable Low Cost

Low Back Pain

What is the Anatomy of the low back?

The first step to understanding the various causes of low back pain is learning about the normal design (anatomy) of the tissues of this area. Important structures of the low back that can be related to symptoms there include the bony lumbar spine (vertebrae), discs between the vertebrae, ligaments around the spine and discs, spinal cord and nerves, muscles of the low back, internal organs of the pelvis and abdomen, and the skin covering the lumbar area…

What is the function of the low back?

The low back, or lumbar area, serves a number of important functions for the human body. These functions include structural support, movement, and protection of certain body tissues.

When we stand, the lower back is functioning to hold most of the weight of the body. When we bend, extend or rotate at the waist, the lower back is involved in the movement. Therefore, injury to the structures important for weight bearing, such as the bony spine, muscles, tendons, and ligaments, often can be detected when the body is standing erect or used in various movements.

Protecting the soft tissues of the nervous system and spinal cord as well as nearby organs of the pelvis and abdomen is a critical function the lumbar spine and its adjacent muscles…

What are common causes of low back pain?

Common causes of low back pain include :-

1] Strain (acute, chronic) : – A lumbar strain is a stretching injury to the ligaments, tendons, and/or muscles of the low back. The stretching incident results in microscopic tears of varying degrees in these tissues. Lumbar strain is considered one of the most common causes of low back pain…

2] Nerve irritation : – The nerves of the lumbar spine can be irritated by mechanical impingement or disease any where along their paths—from their roots at the spinal cord to the skin surface. These conditions include lumbar disc disease (radiculopathy), bony encroachment, and inflammation of the nerves caused by a viral infection (shingles)…

3] Lumbar radiculopathy : – Lumbar radiculopathy is nerve irritation that is caused by damage to the discs between the vertebrae. Damage to the disc occurs because of degeneration (“wear and tear”) of the outer ring of the disc, traumatic injury, or both..

4] Bony encroachment : – Any condition that results in movement or growth of the vertebrae of the lumbar spine can limit the space (encroachment) for the adjacent spinal cord and nerves. Causes of bony encroachment of the spinal nerves include foraminal narrowing (narrowing of the portal through which the spinal nerve passes from the spinal column, out of the spinal canal to the body), spondylolisthesis (slippage of one vertebra relative to another), and spinal stenosis (compression of the nerve roots or spinal cord by bony spurs or other soft tissues in the spinal canal)..

5] Bone and joint conditions : – Bone and joint conditions that lead to low back pain include those existing from birth (congenital), those that result from wear and tear (degenerative) or injury, and those that are from inflammation of the joints (arthritis)..

6] Congenital bone conditions :- Congenital causes (existing from birth) of low back pain include scoliosis and spina bifida. Scoliosis is a sideways (lateral) curvature of the spine that can be caused when one lower extremity is shorter than the other (functional scoliosis) or because of an abnormal design of the spine (structural scoliosis)…

7] Degenerative bone and joint conditions :- As we age, the water and protein content of the body’s cartilage changes. This change results in weaker, thinner, and more fragile cartilage. Because both the discs and the joints that stack the vertebrae (facet joints) are partly composed of cartilage, these areas are subject to wear and tear over time (degenerative changes)…

8] Injury to the bones and joints :-  Fractures (breakage of bone) of the lumbar spine and sacrum bone most commonly affect elderly people with osteoporosis, especially those who have taken long-term cortisone medication…

9] Arthritis :- The spondyloarthropathies are inflammatory types of arthritis that can affect the lower back and sacroiliac joints…

What are other causes of low back pain?

Other causes of low back pain include :-

1] Kidney problems : – Kidney infections, stones, and traumatic bleeding of the kidney (hematoma) are frequently associated with low back pain…

2] Pregnancy : – Pregnancy commonly leads to low back pain by mechanically stressing the lumbar spine (changing the normal lumbar curvature) and by the positioning of the baby inside of the abdomen…

3] Ovary problems : – Ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, and endometriosis not infrequently cause low back pain. Precise diagnosis can require gynecologic examination and testing…

4] Tumors : – Low back pain can be caused by tumors, either benign or malignant, that originate in the bone of the spine or pelvis and spinal cord (primary tumors) and those which originate elsewhere and spread to these areas (metastasize)…

What are uncommon causes of low back pain?

Uncommon causes of low back pain include :-

1] Paget’s disease of bone : – Paget’s disease of the bone is a condition of unknown cause in which the bone formation is out of synchrony with normal bone remodeling…

2] Bleeding or infection in the pelvis : – Bleeding in the pelvis is rare without significant trauma and is usually seen in patients who are taking blood-thinning medications, such as warfarin(Coumadin)…

3] Infection of the cartilage and/or bone of the spine : – Infection of the discs (septic discitis) and bone (osteomyelitis) is extremely rare. These conditions lead to localized pain associated with fever…

4] Aneurysm of the aorta : – In the elderly, atherosclerosis can cause weakening of the wall of the large arterial blood vessel (aorta) in the abdomen…

5] Shingles : – Shingles (Herpes zoster) is an acute infection of the nerves that supply sensation to the skin, generally at one or several spinal levels and on one side of the body (right or left)…

How is low back pain treated?

The treatment very much depends on the precise cause of the low back pain. Moreover, each patient must be individually evaluated and managed in the context of the underlying background health status and activity level…

Low Back Pain At A Glance

Functions of the low back, or lumbar area, include structural support, movement, and protection of certain body tissues.

Your Questions About Shingles

Thomas asks…

Start of shingles? or a bite?

Ok so last nite I started scratching at my chest cus it was itchy.. It turned into like a red raised up blister like spot! Its been bugging me all day today its so itchy but its just this one spot! Theres no sign of any others..

Today I showed my friend sarah it n she said it looks like shingles! Shes had the shingles a few times n said its either that or a bite, but surely if it was shingles it would have started with a few spots? Iv herd its caused by stress and I have been highly stressed.. But I thought only older people got shingles? Im only just turned 18!!

The other possiblity is its a bite.. And in sayin that, I was at my boyfriends monday nite n he has pet snakes n lizards.. He went to fed the lizards live crickets he has in a wee tub, but he dropped it n there were crickets jumpin about the bedroom everywhere! I was just standing on the bed screamin while he was runnin about tryin to catch or squash them all.. So none of them got near me. But a few hrs later we were in bed n noticed one jumping about the floor..duno where that one had been hiding, was thinkin it could have been under the covers n bite me.. But it didnt start to itch til at least 24hrs after the crickets inncident! And I went home that nite n kyle slept in that room with all the other crickets he missed n hes fine lol

So anyone any suggestions on what this could be? And how I can ease the itch??
Thanks <3

There is no easing the itch if its shingles. Im 21, nd i had shingles lastt year around this time and thought the same thing, wtf i thought only older people got it?? Apparently for some the pox virus can lie dormant fir a long time, turning into shingles. Now the difference is shingles dont just itch, they effing HURT. Any little touch is like fire and needles being shoved inside you, because t actually attacks the nerves right under the skin. Mine started as just a spot on my side, and luckily didnt grow more than afew inches across (right under my armpit pretty much) and typically it will form in a horizontal band that wraps around your chest or back. But if its just itchy right now, try some aloe or lidocaine, or calamine lotion. If non of those help, u probably habe shingles, which sucks and im sorry .

Insurer for composite shingles over wooden shingles in OK?

Does anyone know of an insurance company that will insure a home with composite asphalt shingles over wooden shingles in Oklahoma? Also, what might the consequences be if when the insurance company does the initial inspection of the roof they just did a drive by and didn’t realize that there are wooden shingles underneath the composite? Initially we didn’t realize this was the case when we signed a contract on the house so therefore didn’t disclose that to our insurance company. I just wouldn’t want our company to come back and say they wont pay to replace the roof if something happened later on down the road.
The inspector told us it would be hard to find a company willing to insure a roof like that and so far the 2 insurance companies i have checked with said they would not insure a roof like that.

I’ve never heard of this being an issue.

Is there an insurance company TELLING you that they have an issue with asphalt shingles over wood? If not, don’t sweat it.

Plastic strips on top of tar strip on top of 3 tab shingles. Nailed through plastic. Installed correctly?

My roof was installed with the long plastic strips left on top of the tar strip on each shingle. This tar strip is on the top side of the shingle directly above the 3 tabs. The shingles were nailed through this plastic strip. They did not disintegrate and seem to have been a barrier preventing the tar strip from sealing when it heated up. Was this installed correctly? I have wind damage due to a dozen or so tabs lifting up, bending over and breaking off. The back side of the broken tabs shows no sign of tar/glue and pieces of the plastic strips are still evident on the shingle tops that are now exposed. The plastic strip says do not remove on it. Why, and should it have been removed?

admin answers:

That plastic strip should stay on the underside of the shingles, not on top. The only purpose is to keep the shingles from sticking together in the packaging. If the plastic strip is on top of the shingles, they were installed incorrectly and will prevent the shingles from sealing,

Chris asks…

thanks so much x

admin answers:

Shingles is a disease caused from the chicken pox virus that stores in the dorsal root ganglia( its a nerve) at some point in time, it is triggered to come back out. Usually it is in elderly individuals and is bumpy and painful. Its unlikely. I’m pretty sure it is also usually located on your back.

asbestos shingles…..?

My husband and I are considering buying a new home. The sides and back of the home are asbestos shingles and we want to know if anyone had an idea of what the cost of removal is? It’s a very small 2 bedroom ranch and would like to eventually add on to it, which would mean it would have to come off. I’ve already looked on here and I know its EXPENSIVE, so please answer only if you know numbers. We live out on Long Island, NY..I know that makes a difference. (We only just thought of this and are suppose to sign contract within a few days, so please serious answers only.) Thanks so much for the help!!

admin answers:

Because you are NY, it will be higher in price than the rest of the country. Your best bet is to call a couple of local contractors and get quick estimates. YOu can find them in the yellow pages. In the southeast, a real ballpark guess would be $5k-10k.
