Understanding and Treating Nerve Pain, Neuralgia

Understanding and Treating Nerve Pain, Neuralgia

Article by John Scott

Nerves are the pathways the body uses to communicate things from pain to temperature to just general sensation. The system of nerves in the body is known as the nervous system. Normally, it is very effective for making sure your brain is able to control the body correctly, but sometimes we get nerve pain.

Our best medical knowledge says that nerve pain is a result of some sort of damage or injury to one or more nerves. Of course, there are many different causes, including trauma, disease, disorder, substance abuse, and even medication. Others are born with nerve problems. The normal way that it transmits messages about pain, sensation, and even heat or coldness may be radically changed. These abnormal messages cause the sufferer to feel chronic pain in the nerves of the hands, arms, legs, etc.

It can be especially difficult to treat because about 3 out of 10 people don’t know how they got it. Even knowing the cause does not guarantee any cures. The vast majority of time the treatment is pain management.

Here’s some more information about the most common types of nerve pain.Spinal Nerve Disorder

Certain diseases can cause damage to the spine that affects the nervous system. More often than not, however, spinal disorders are a result of trauma – car accidents, falling down stairs, or violence acts. The pain is usually felt in the neck and back.Post-herpetic Neuralgia

The virus that causes chickenpox and shingles stays in the spine. While the symptoms of rash, burning, and tingling are most famous, less known is that it can cause paralysis and nerve damage that is sometimes permanent. The resulting pain that continues after the rash is gone is known as post-herpetic neuralgia.Diabetic Nerve Pain

This happens to a lot of people with diabetes and can happen to any diabetic person. Also known as diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain (DPNP), it affects the hands and arms as well as feet and legs. Because of nerve confusion, people with DPNP often describe the sensation as burning, stabbing, and tingling. Diabetic Nerve Pain must be treated by a doctor or a more serious condition may develop.Trigeminal Neuralgia

This pain disorder afflicts the head and neck. These pains are sharp, quick, and often shocking. Luckily, they only last a few seconds, but they can be so debilitating that sufferers often are unable to shave and groom themselves around the face and head because it can cause extreme pain. Because the pain often localizes to a very specific part of the face, any slight movement of this area can cause intense pain.Treatment Options

Science and medicine are always coming up with new treatment ideas and we understand more and more about how our nervous systems work every day. Surgery and therapy is a new option. For most, however, doctors recommend a consistent regimen of medication.

Ultram is often used because it can handle the moderate to intense pains, is fast acting, and has a lesser capacity for abuse than many other opiate painkillers.Ultram comes in a few different varieties, including Ultram ER – the extended release version.

Learn more on the infections caused herpes virus

Learn more on the infections caused herpes virus

Article by Ian Caspar

Men and women all over the world suffer from viral infections at some point in their life time. Some viral infections are mild in effect while some are quite severe. Herpes is one of the highly contagious DNA viruses, which is known to cause severe symptoms in you. Once you contract this virus, it cannot be cured and causes recurrent symptoms. The two most widely spread herpes viruses are herpes simplex virus and zoster virus, which can lead to infections such as genital herpes, cold sores and shingles. This virus is mainly characterised by prolonged time period during which it remains dormant and then short periods of time, during which it is active. In its active stage, the person who is infected suffers from considerable discomfort and pain. Unfortunately, there is no cure for this virus, but it can be treated with the help of antiviral medications available on the market.

What is genital herpes?

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection, which is caused by the herpes simplex virus. It is highly infectious and can cause symptoms such as water blisters, red sores and ulcers that appear on and around the genitals, thighs, buttocks and anus. You can contract this infection through unprotected sexual intercourse, sharing your sex toys with an infected person and becoming sexually active at an early age. Genital herpes can also spread through close physical contact with the infected area, which makes it possible to contract the virus through oral intercourse as well. You can also contract the infection if you come in contact with the infected skin area, even if the symptoms are not visible. People who are infected with this virus can experience the symptoms in different manners. Some can experience the symptoms within the first couple of days after contracting the virus itself. Some people, on the other hand do not experience the symptoms even for weeks, months or years.

What is shingles?

Shingles is another uncomfortable and painful infection, which is caused by the zoster virus. This is the major factor that can cause other infections such as chickenpox. Those who contract chickenpox at a younger age are more likely to develop this infection in their adult life. While chickenpox can be completely cured, the zoster virus is such, which can remain dormant in your nerve cells and become active later in life. The fact that only certain people fully develop this virus while some do not is not yet understood fully. And if you do develop shingles, you are likely to suffer at least two to three outbreaks during your lifetime. But this virus is not contagious, like that of the herpes simplex virus. And if you do not have chickenpox in your childhood, then you can possibly develop by coming into contact with a person having active symptoms of the virus.

What are cold sores?

Cold sores are caused by a different type of the herpes simplex virus. The major symptoms of cold sores usually include fluid filled blisters appearing around the mouth. Cold sores, the basic characteristic of the simplex virus, are highly contagious. They can can spread from one person to another through direct contact with the infected skin or by sharing toothbrush or razor that has come in contact with the infected area. It is one of the most widely occurring form of the herpes simplex viruses and people usually contract it at a younger age, although the symptoms can develop in their adolescence. As an adult, you are also likely to get infected with the virus and can develop the symptoms within days of getting infected.

Your Questions About Shingles

Donna asks…

who sings this old song there are several versions of it?

This old house once knew its children
This old house once knew its wife
This old house was home and comfort
As they fought the storms of life

This old house once rang with laughter
This old house heard many shouts
Now it trembles in the darkness
When the lightning walks about

Ain’t gonna need this house no longer
Ain’t gonna need this house no more
Ain’t got time to fix the shingles
Ain’t got time to fix the floor
Ain’t got time to oil the hinges
Nor to mend the window pain
Ain’t gonna need this house no longer
He’s getting ready to meet the saints

This old house is gettin’ shaky
This old house is gettin’ old
This old house has seen the rain
This old house has seen the cold

Oh his knees are gettin’ chilly
But he feels no fear or pain
Cause he sees an angel peepin’
Through a broken window pane

Ain’t gonna need this house no longer

Steven asks…

Exactly WHO do you have to be to get FEMA help?

We have lived in Southwest Central Louisiana for our whole lives and never asked for FEMA assistance until Hurricane Rita. We didn’t evacuate, spent two weeks with no electricity, no running water, only MRE’s to eat with two very small children. A huge tree limb fell through the back of our house, completely taking out our closed in back porch and leaving an exposed live electrical wire, ripping some of the siding off of the house, and making a fairly large hole in our roof over the kitchen. Guess what FEMA denied our claim stating that we didn’t have enough damage. With Gustav, shingles came up on the roof and rain poured into the attic space causing the ceiling to crack and cave in about two inches in the middle of the living room. Same thing again “denied, not enough damage” During Gustav we did evacuate (it was mandatory) and spent $698 on hotel, food, and gas. According to FEMA we qualify for nothing.

So what has to happen to you for FEMA to help? Do you have to have a tree hanging out of your *ss for them to assist you? What is the point of being declared a disaster area if you are going to get no help?
Insurance??? that is a laugh! The only kind of insurance you can find here after katrina and rita is the kind no one can afford.

And I don’t concider MOLD growing in the attic of your home to be sanitary.

admin answers:

You can get FEMA aid, but each family may only get it once, ever. The area must be a federally declared emergency area, (like during Katrina, or Gustav) and the FEMA inspectors must approve the amount of damage as warranting federal financial assistance. If you house isn’t there anymore, or is across the street, you have a good shot at a measly $2000. Once. FEMA is crap. I give them a rating of Horribly Epic Failure.

Mary asks…

I can NOT stand my mother in law to be?

I have been with my fiance for 7 years. We have two beautiful children together & a good relationship. The usual topic of argument is mostly his mother. She loves drama & causing chaos.
His family & I got along fine until we moved us to his home town (which this town might have a population of 800 people living in it).
My mother in law to be has made negative comments only around me about my kids & my fiance. So when I called her on it in front of my fiance she said oh you misconstrued things or she never said that. I don’t know how many times we have gone round & round about things she has said or how two faced she can be. She can be the sweetest thing and literally as soon as I walk in the other room she is talking about me in a negative way. She is like this with everyone, but I still take it personal.
Because I have called her on her sh!t, she has got the family convinced I’m to blame.
Like I said we live in a small town. I have walked into people at the local store hear them whispering about me, I actually heard two women behind me in line saying “she is a trouble maker” meaning me. So thanks to my mother in law to be & her daughter I have the reputation of being the “trouble maker” so I have a hard time making friends here, and feel like an outcast.
The women is really sick she has had an addiction to pain meds since she was in her late 30’s. Now she is in her early 50’s the doc has recently took her off the methadone & put her on oxy’s and I think she is full blown crazy now.
Yesterday she called up asking my fiance to find her a pot cigarette b/c she was in so much pain obviously my fiance declined. Half and hour later she called again asking for the same favor & my fiance declined again.
A couple of hours went by I answer the phone it was my mother in law to be hysterical saying she was in so much pain, I told her you have enough pain meds (she is on oxycotins, oxycodones, percocets, colodipins, & others…)
She had me convinced she was having a nervous break down, as well as informing me that she has shingles and she knew about this for the past week.
Well my 5 year old was just over there 2 days ago WTF!!! This is the kinda cr@p that starts family arguments b/c if my fiance and I ask his father about this recent illness he will flip and say I’m causing problems.
The last illness my mother in law to be had was mrsa & her husband and daughter both denied she had it flipped on me saying I’m causing problems, meanwhile my daughter caught the staph. The whole family denied it & when my daughter was a clear from the mrsa my mother in law to be told me she had mrsa & it is now in remission, but again my fiance and her husband both out of the room.

So I would like to know your pinion on why the family is labeling me as the problem & why do they in full force enable this wwomen’saddiction & also not honest with us about her contagious illnesses. I’m so stressed out about this & this is effecting my relationship with fiance & I.

News on Avian Flu

News on Avian Flu

Avian Flu: The bad news first

Well, it’s flu season again. Only this time, we hear everyone talking about avian flu…the Super flu which is expected to wreck havoc across our land in the not so distant months.

So what is avian flu? Avian flu is bird flu. Yes, you read that right, “Avian flu is bird flu.” And why might that be such bad news?

If you pursue the news much, you will read that the deadliest disease in history is widely regarded as the Spanish Flu epidemic which killed 40 million people in just months. Scientists now believe the epidemic was an avian flu pandemic. In other words, the virus came from birds – it is believed – and a virus similar to this one -called the “H5N1” (a form of avian flu virus). Its origins?  Most scientists agree it originated in Asia, as this one.

Flu comes every season. It comes in one of two forms, Type A or Type B influenza. Type A is the more potent of these kinds of flu, and avian flu is Type A. These strains kill.

The current avian flu bug is infecting and spreading throughout the poultry industry in Asia. Why so often in Asia? Simply put…and here is a key to understanding how to deal with avian flu – poultry farms are absolutely filthy. The stench from such farms, especially those throughout Asia, can be detected a mile away. Those farms are packed with animals which are weak with compromised, weakened, immune systems.

Let these two phrases sink in together: avian flu and weakened immune systems. Whether we are dealing with the aftermath of the horrible conditions and weakened immune systems of millions who survived World War I or the horrible conditions of Asian and European poultry farms and their millions of animals with weakened immune systems, the key to this potential pandemic is “weakened immune systems and avian flu”.

Because of the rapid spread and highly dangerous nature of the avian flu to birds, millions of flocks have been destroyed throughout the afflicted countries. However, that is simply not working because migratory birds are carrying the avian flu to distant lands, thus spreading its contagion. Interestingly, the migratory birds are not dying like the chickens. Why? Because their immune systems are much stronger, we are told by scientists.
Let that one sink in too: avian flu is not killing those animals so readily which have strong immune systems. Hum…avian flu and immune systems…Could be we have something here.

Incidentally, there have been only about a hundred deaths from avian flu worldwide. It is almost impossible for avian flu to make the transition from bird to human easily.

Avian Flu: Now for the really bad news

Of course, as soon as there is the slightest danger -avian flu or otherwise -our government jumps into high gear to infect every one of us, if possible, with its antiviral drug program against the slightest hint of avian flu. To date, everyone of the influenza drugs have proven worthless…or worse, against avian flu or any other kind of flu.

Note this statement from the former Chief Vaccine Control at the Federal Food and Drug Administration:

There is no evidence that any influenza vaccine thus far
developed is effective in preventing or mitigating any attack
of influenza. The producers of these vaccines know that they
are worthless, but they go on selling them anyway.
–Dr. J. Anthony Morris

I wonder if this will apply to the alleged avian flu “antidote”.  Note: The last few decades have seen a dramatic shift in fatalities from seasonal flu (some of which are avian flu).

Researchers now know the increase in the population does NOT account for the doubling of the seasonal average death toll from flu (avian flu or otherwise). Less than 20,000 were dying per year for decades. But, since the advent of the flu shot, averages of over 40,000 people per year have been dying.

Why?

One suggestion is a combination of two factors: the continued impairment of the immune system of the average American as witnessed by the multitude of epidemic diseases among us (not present in appreciable amounts in previous decades). The second factor follows below… (like the second Horseman of the Apocalypse).

Let’s see…one thing we do know about flu vaccines. They are not proven to work… No, two things we know…Yes, yes. They can kill. Just as surely as the avian flu can kill.

Many authorities believe  the flu shot actually weakens the immune system…ah, there it is again…the immune system weakened.

Why is that? Let’s see. The ingredients in the flu vaccine (remember this when dealing with the avian flu) include:

”    Formaldehyde, you know…embalming fluid known to cause cancer.

”    Aluminum, the very metal related to Alzheimer’s disease, cancers of numerous types and traumatic seizures.

”    Carbolic Acid: a terribly caustic poison.

”    Ethylene Glycol: You will definitely need this fluid this winter, but please only use it as anti-freeze for your car, as it was designed to be used originally.

”    Mercury: This is present in the vaccine ingredient called thimerosol. This is a known medical crippler and killer. It kills brain cells and immune cells and is linked to childhood brain and nervous diseases because of its use in VACCINES.
”    Vaccines for use in avian flu are grown on virus strains developed from pus-laden animal tissue mixed with the above mentioned deadly chemicals.
(Bulleted items: Special Report, “Bird Flu, H5N1”, Dr. Richard Schulze, November 2005, p. 12. Great “avian flu” resource.)

Is it any wonder the drug companies involved sought to be legally protected from law suits by those who might use these drugs against avian flu?

Forgive my skepticism, but I have seen from the inside of the medical/drug establishment, the fanatical zeal to make money as a first priority… Been there, opposed that. Avian flu treatment will not be any different.

Don’t count on the Hippocratic Oath to protect you from avian flu.  There is big money in these drugs. Billions. And it is always suspicious when a drug company seeks lawsuit immunity (hum, appropriate wording here) BEFORE THE FACT (before its use against avian flu!)

Avian Flu: Now for the good news (finally).

Avian flu was not in view when this following statement was made. However, read it carefully with avian flu in mind.

In Congressional testimony concerning the potential of bio-terrorism attack upon the United States, Dr. H. Reginald McDaniel stated,

In instances of unusual, epidemic, or virulent infectious agent exposure,
glyconutrient supplementation has been found effective for enhancing
general immune functions and defense. When supplied at higher levels
than available in nature, sugars needed for cellular synthesis can take
innate defense systems to a much higher level that are effective against
infectious agents.

In other words, if we were attacked by an enemy with bio weapons -such as avian flu- we could find protection with glyconutrition. This is a powerful, non-prescriptive antidote possibility against avian flu.

Glyconutrition enhances the immune system’s natural defenses so powerfully that cancers, flu, and other UNDER ACTIVE IMMUNE DISORDERS can be stopped. The evidence is already in place. There is no guesswork here. Avian flu is flu, Type A, precisely the kind of flu glyconutrition is designed to offset.

Glyconutrition is effective – presumably against avian flu too – and has no side effects. It is a food substance, proven to be vital for human survival. There are no less than four Nobel Prizes to substantiate the presence and human need for glyconutrition.

There is an abundance of evidence showing its effectiveness against all kinds of disease, including flu. It doesn’t attack the flu directly. It strengthens the immune defenses – killer T cells and others – and they kill the tumors, flu, herpes simplex, shingles, strep, TB, bacterial infections, cancers, parasitic diseases… Quite a list of killers thus killed.

So…

Guess what I am going to take to protect my family this year against avian flu…if it develops?

Symptoms found in chicken pox and shingles

Symptoms found in chicken pox and shingles

Article by Groshan Fabiola

Symptoms of Chickenpox ( varicella ) may vary from pacient to pacient making us see people that have headaches, flue like symptoms or even fever, that in some cases can reach 105 F, and swollen glands are also included. The incubation period of the theChickenpox may also vary from 10 to 20 days, again depending on the pacient and its immune system.

This doesn’t last much. Shortly after the flue like symptoms have past the rash breaks out. By rash we understand the appearance of tiny red bumps, mostly on the face, chest or abdomen. Spreading relatively quickly, they start to get bigger in a mater of hours forming a blister on a red base. A funny comparison has been found for them: dewdrops on rose petals. At first the fluid in the blisters is clear only to become cloudy during the period of several days and eventually forming a scab and falling of after another four. The number of blister also varies; while some pacients of chickenpox have only a few ones, other can have hundreds, on top of that being the fact that they each like crazy. Lasting seven to ten days, the disease causes the pacient to have several crops of blisters.

Another type of skin disease would be the shingles (Herpes Zoster) attack. Occurring nearly always on adults, we see it developing on one side of the human body and having three identifiable symptoms.

->Prodrome: a cluster of warning symptoms appearing before the outbreak of the infection.

->The infection begins.

->Postherpetic neuralgi a develops.

Pain is a very common symptom in herpes zoster, often appearing well before the appearance of the rash.Predrome (pain) – being the first symptom to appear in pacients, it appears to be located at the very site where the virus will be re-activating, making the pain be sharp, piercing, tearing or even similar to an electric shock. Besides pain, the pacient might feel that thatarea is itching or be unbearably sensitive to touch. Muscles aches and even fever are some of the extreme symptoms of the disease. Although usually lasting only a couple of days before the rash, cases have been known where the pain has lasted more… lot more for weeks or even month.

Active shingles – it marks the actual infection. 50% or 60% of cases occur on the trunk, the side of head being the next big area on witch it appears, making a very big risk the fact that the infection could spread to the mouth or eyes. First a rash appears only to become small fluid-filled blisters in about 12 hours witch eventually grow and become pus filled. The healing last as long as in chickenpox : up to 10 days.

Zoster Sine Herpete is the condition when the pain is not followed by the rash, this thing occurring more often in elder pacients, with symptoms very similar to the ones of chickenpox.

Natural Pneumonia Treatment

Natural Pneumonia Treatment

Pneumonia refers to lung inflammation. There are 50 such lung inflammatory ailments. During such situations, the lungs inevitably experience build up of fluids. Several micro-organisms cause pneumonia. Pneumonic inflammation of the lungs occurs due to collection of cellular wastes and blood cells within the air sacs within the lungs. Such pneumonic inflammation creates breathing problems. The symptoms of Aspiration pneumonia are not always intense and may disappear within a few days, but in rare cases the aspiration of either food or vomit can result in respiratory arrest and death. The main symptoms of Aspiration pneumonia include: a dry cough, chest pain and soreness, wheezing during normal breathing, and difficulty in breathing. It is advisable to see your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms. For a child between the ages of twelve and seventeen, reduce the dose to three-quarters the recommended amount. For a child between six and twelve, use one-half the recommended dose, and for a child under the age of six, use one-quarter the recommended amount. For a cold and sore throat, the nose and throat should be kept clean by sniffing salt water up the nose and then blowing the nose, holding one side shut while blowing through the other. Use one teaspoon of salt to a pint of water. Do this several times a day. Gargle and rinse out the mouth with salt water. Natural pneumonia treatment should aim to boost the immune system in order to fight off the microbe causing the infection. Natural treatment can help relieve coughing, breathlessness, fever, fatigue and sore lungs. It can be safely combined with conventional medication if required. Here are 7 ways to fight pneumonia naturally It is possible for shingles to disappear on its own but it can take up to more than a month for it to heal. Prompt treatment for shingles is important so you can avoid the pain and heal faster. In some cases, immediate treatment can also prevent complications. In rare cases, individuals with shingles can suffer from vision and hearing impairment. Pneumonia and encephalitis are also avoidable rare complications. Avoid and treat colds and influenza as soon as possible and as efficiently as possible. Maintain a good hygiene of your hands, have a rich diet in dark-colored fruits and vegetables and fresh food, have an active socially life, take different zinc preparations because studies have shown that zinc has substantial benefits against colds, flus, allergies, pneumonia. short for Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus – is a rapidly growing problem not only in the United States, but across the world. It is a dangerous strain of staph bacteria untreatable by most antibiotics. It has been known to cause many potentially deadly complications like pneumonia, bloodstream infections, and surgical wound infections.

The First Symptoms Don’t Lie: When is Herpes Testing Required?

The First Symptoms Don’t Lie: When is Herpes Testing Required?

Few things are less appealing to a prospective mate than an individual in the throes of a full-blown herpes outbreak. Let’s face it—it’s just not sexy. Herpes is a treatable AND preventable disease but one needs to arm themselves with the facts before they can get a hold of this bad boy. If symptoms are present, then herpes testing is definitely required.

The Basics

What are we dealing with here? <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push([‘_trackPageview’, ‘/outgoing/article_exit_link/4549425’]);” href=”http://www.stdcenterny.com/sexually_transmitted_diseases_nyc/herpes_testing_new_york.html ” title=”Herpes” >Herpes</a> is a disease caused by a virus. A virus is a tiny organism that gets into our cells and disrupts their normal functioning.

There are exactly eight different varieties of the herpes virus, these include Epstein-Barr and Shingles, but for our purposes we are interested in just two of them: Herpes Simplex Virus 1 and Herpes Simplex Virus 2. In this day and AIDS, er… age, the two herpes simplexes are not exactly black & white, yet they are still classified as follows…

HSV1 is the virus that is typically associated by cold sores on and around the lips and mouth.

HSV2 is the virus that is typically associated with genital herpes. That is, cold sores on and around the privates.

In the United States approximately 55% of persons over the age of fourteen display HSV 1 infection when their blood is tested. The percentage of people who test positive for HSV 2 is over 20% Although this is a dramatically lower number than those testing positive for HSV 1, it is still an eye opening and disturbing number. Quite simply, it should raise red flags as to the need for herpes testing.

The Symptoms

First let us define a Primary Outbreak. This is an outbreak occurring in an individual that has no earlier exposure to either of the simplexes. There are two ways that a primary outbreak can manifest itself. The first is with NO SYMPTOMS at all. This is disturbingly common. The second type of symptoms familiar to a Primary Outbreak will include entire body involvement. These obvious symptoms will include aching bones and joints, headache, fatigue, fever, leg pain and general flu-like symptoms.

A sign that the immune system is doing its best to stave off the infection are enlarged lymph nodes in the groin area. They may swell up and feel like hard but tender peas under the skin.

Unfortunately, the bad news does not stop here. Painful urination, itching, and a discharge from either the penis or the vagina can also occur.

Sores can appear in the mouth and/or around the genitals. These sores often begin as blisters and break open forming a painful ulcer in their place.

Needless to say, symptoms like these are not subtle. If you are currently sleeping with one or more partners you owe it to yourself to acquire herpes testing. The test is simple and accurate and will alert you to your status, thereby allowing you to either breath free or prompting you to get medicine to control your outbreaks and keep you from infecting others.

If you live in the Metropolitan region of New York City and feel that there may be a chance that you have <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push([‘_trackPageview’, ‘/outgoing/article_exit_link/4549425’]);” href=”http://www.stdcenterny.com/std_testing-nyc/std_clinic_nyc.html” title=” acquired herpes” >acquired herpes</a>, you owe it to yourself to log onto <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push([‘_trackPageview’, ‘/outgoing/article_exit_link/4549425’]);” href=”http://www.stdcenterny.com/” title=” STDCenterNY.com ” >STDCenterNY.com</a> or to call 1-212-696-5900. Opinions on opening up my own music school , please advise?

Im 32, BA in Elementary Education, minor in music. Parttime NYC school teacher. PLaying piano since age 5. Produced for some hop hop celebrities in the early 2000’s.
I live with parents and dont have much money , obviously. lol
Now i want to open up a music school and teach kids piano . I want to teach kids music productions. Have a nice studio in the garagee to teach piano and more. I was thinking of teaching Handicapped and retarded students also. IF i do get married and have kids one day in the future i would like to put the studio in a garage and live next door. I would put a shingle sign on the lawn, just a small one saying ” Music conservatory”.
My questions are.
1. Do you think i can support my wife and kids doing this if i do have them in the future.

2. Would this be good even thought the economy is bad and people are loosing jobs. Will they have money for lessons. I though because most public schools are shutting down music programs so there WOULD be a need for piano lessons more now then ever and they would come to me.

3. How much should i charge. And how long should the lesson be.

4. Why is my female friend telling me that this is a bad idea and making fun of me that i am a dreamer and this is not a real job and i will be broke.

5 .Should i get a Masters degree in music? what field of music? Seems like you cant do that much with it lol no offense

PLease share your knowledge and answer all and give me all the advise possible

thanks

1. Absolutely, chances are you can make double or even triple what you would as a public school teacher. It will take time and skill to get to that point.

2. Music and art always survive despite the economy, the great depression bore that out quite well… If you are a good teacher, people will pay. If you are a good businessman, ie finance and marketing, you will make very good money. A shingle on the lawn will not do… Its going to take a ton more work on the marketing side than that. Special needs students would be a rare specialty. Do you have any background in teaching special needs kids beyond the minimum required for your teaching license? Its not a calkwalk by any means.

3. You should have a business plan, and a knowledge of your competition and what sets you apart. From there, you will know your value, and can set your prices appropriately. Time wise it will depend on the students age/experience/ability to learn. Fixed time frames for individualized instruction are a holdover from public ed… Students do not learn as well in that situation… And as a result, you dont make as much money either.

4. Some dreamers do big things, others only succeed after a ton of failures, others are best being content working for someone else. This will be a huge undertaking if its your solve source of income… Are you committed and determined enough to make it go.. 100 hour work weeks are not unrealistic at the start, and you wont be paid for most of it. A driven dreamer can make this work, a passive dreamer likely wont. The question is which are you? Question 3, 4, and 5 suggest you are not driven…otoh, your success in music suggests otherwise. It could be you just lack focus, and once turned on will go full bore.

5. A Masters likely wont help much as far as private instruction goes, unless you want to get into the special needs area or music therapy. You need to look at the costs of 2 more yrs of school, and whether your proposed business can justify the cost.

I’d recommend you go to work for a music store for a year or two giving lessons as an employee. See how you like teaching, see how the business side operates, and from there make the call. To just jump in, without someone else paying for you to get experience often times doesnt work too well.

Ken asks…

23yo male entering Second week with shingles and still pain comparable to a kidney stone, Is this normal?

I am a 23 year old male who was diagnosed a week ago with shingles and given a 7 day supply of Valtrex, 2 months supply of amitriptyline to prevent PHN, and Vicodin. I have finished the 7 days of Valtrex and am still taking the amitriptyline before I go to bed and Vicodin 1 every 6 hours as needed for the pain which still feels comparable to a kidney stone. The rash is starting to heal slowly with no more signs of new lesions but the pain and the overall feeling of malaise is still there. I am almost out of the Vicodin and have tryed aleve, tylenol, and motrin with no success in easing my discomfort and am wondering should I call the doctor for another prescription becuase still having the rash I have heard that the pain can last from 2 to 4 weeks and do not want to suffer?
To add to the question at hand. The doctor originally told me to try otc pain medecine and if it does not work take the vicodin which I have taken, it takes care of the shooting pain that I have under the rash and also helps make the pain subside so it is possible for me to sleep. I currently am not insured so seeing the doctor is hard to do and hopefully wont need to do another week of Valtrex$$

admin answers:

Get back in touch with your doctor ASAP. Shingles is a HORRIBLE thing! I’ve had them twice! See if your doctor can give you something stronger for the pain. Also remember that until your blisters dry up, you’re contagious to people that have never had chicken pox. I wish you the best of luck!!

P.S. i have had chicken pox before and currently am 20 years old.

let me know thank you,

admin answers:

Shingles tend to have a rather distinct appearance. Also, pain is common.

Your symptoms are actually very “non-specific”. They don’t point to any one thing.

If it doesn’t go away, get checked at a clinic.

Ruth asks…

Whats the best coating for extending the life of composition shingles?

Whats the best coating for extending the life of composition shingles? I live in Arizona’s Sonoran Desert and the comp shingled roof is about 6-7 years old, with just one layer of shingles. It is still in fairly good shape, but showing signs of deterioration; monsoon rain carrying off some of the grit when there’s a heavy downpour.

I know there are water based elastomeric roof coatings and also (oil based?) metallic coatings. I have a roof mounted evaporative cooler that must be maintained monthly through the summer, so whatever coating I use, I will be having to go up there wearing wool socks instead of shoes so I don’t damage the coating.

If I go with a metallic roof coating, I’d like to find one that comes in different colors, as it seems most are silver. Anyone know of a good metallic roof coating that does come in different colors?

Thank you for your help

admin answers:

I too live in the harsh desert, I buy 4 year deck stain and it only lasts a couple of months on decks. I have questions, have you seen any of these types of products last in real life? Can they withstand hail?

You may be better off putting a steel roof on, they last forever

Florida and pain management

Florida and pain management

Article by Edith Feldman

At first sight, the title to this article might look a little strange. We are all used to seeing the state associated with its beautiful beaches and orange juice famous all round the world. We also know this is the land of retirement where the rich go to enjoy their golden years, now ruled by Jeb Bush who keeps the family name alive in the political hall of fame. But it’s not so often associated with pain management. We need to take one step back to understand the message.

Long ago, when the US was just a dream in the eye of the British and other downtrodden people around the world, the idea of capitalism was born. This is the idea that you always charge the price the market will pay and then some. For several centuries, business has developed this idea so that, regardless of any ethical considerations, everyone is out to make a buck. Now think about all these older people relocating to a warmer climate. They are all going to have health problems at some point. They will all want the convenience of painkillers and other treatment. In part, this explains why there has been an explosion of pain management clinics across the “sunshine state”.

However, we need a note realism here. For all the state has managed to market itself as the home of sunshine, it’s also the home to some severe weather patterns that can cause havoc. This captures a disconnection between the reputation and the facts. The recession has hit Florida hard. The unemployment rate has always been high there. The foreclosure rate has been spectacular. The result has turned Florida into the fraud capital of America. It’s estimated that criminal gangs have been staging traffic accidents and making false claims worth more than billion a year. To make this work, they have also been setting up clinics to write fake medical reports of the injuries received in these staged crashes. It’s an industry. So while you have all these clinics around, the criminals thought they should use them as fronts for the sale of the addictive painkillers.

Although the shingle above the door may sound respectable, the vast majority of the pain management clinics have been criminal businesses. This has been made possible by the lack of controls. There have been no checks on the credentials of the people behind the operation of each business and little supervision over their day-to-day operation. Until now, that is. The state government is finally moving to impose a moratorium. There are to be no new clinics in many counties. There are to be new controls to prevent the abuse of prescription drugs.

Although none of this affects Ultram directly, it does show a disturbing trend. Florida is not a typical state given the skewing of the age profile, but it has become a symptom of the increasingly widespread abuse of painkillers. As a nation, we seem to be reaching for the pill bottle a little too quickly and then finding it difficult to put it down again. Drugs like Ultram, used wisely, are a necessary part of the management of pain. Regardless of age, we should all take action to ensure we do not become dependent on drugs.
