Your Questions About Shingles

Maria asks…

Shingles often appears years after the initial chicken pox attack how is that possible?

Shingles is a disease caused by the same herpes virus that causes chicken pox

admin answers:

Many people are able to rid themselves of the virus when they have chicken pox. Some cannot. But we all get over chicken pox. When the virus remains in the body, it retreats into nerve tissue, often spinal nerves, and goes dormant. Often it’s reactivated later in life but sometimes young people are stricken with outbreaks of herpes zoster. It’s thought that conditions that are chronic or long-term, things such as stress, fatigue, skin conditions or injuries and even some illnesses can reactivate the virus.

Chronic kidney disease patient with shingles? Is it dangerous?

My mom suffers from chronic kidney diesase for the past 15 years. Her kidney is infected and is not able to function properly, hence her creatinine and BUN levels are elevated. 2 days ago, she had scars and went to see a normal doctor in a nearby clinic. She was told that she has shingles. Will it affect her kidney function?? Will it add to the infection?? And oh yeah, her nephrologist had asked her to take the medications for shingles along with her kidney medications.. My mom usually has creatinine at 2.7 and BUN at 90?? Please provide proper answer.. Professional answers are welcomed.. Thx alot people!!

admin answers:

If her nephrologist told her to take the meds, I think that’s the voice you should listen to.

I don’t think that shingles will hurt her kidneys – the virus has been in her body all these years, every since she had chicken pox, it just became active.

Richard asks…

Can my job fire me for refusing to come in when a resident has a highly contagous disease?

I work at an adult care facility and one of the residents that I would need to come in close contact with several times daily has developed shingles. I have not had shingles or chicken pox and so I told my boss I did not want to come in and risk exposure to the disease. Can I be fired for this in the state of Oregon?
This is a home care facility where only one person is on duty and is responsible for 5 residents.

admin answers:

Yes, the only excuse for being absent that the job has to accept is if you are pregnant (and in labor), caring for an immediate family member for an emergency, or involved in a criminal case against you or an immediate family member (meaning you are testifying or the case is regarding a wrong done against you – the person on trail killed or kidnapped someone in your immediate family – something to that effect). Other then the very few exceptions, unless offered by your employer through your contract with them, they can fire you for not showing up.
Now with regards to not being inoculated for shingles, they MUST give you a reasonable accommodation so you can complete your work effectively (otherwise they are liable).
