Chris asks…
How contagious is shingles ?
If my friend has had shingles for 10 days, and it is clearing up, how contagious is it? I have never even had chicken pox…

admin answers:
Shingles are contagious when there are new blisters forming and old blisters healing. Once all the blisters have crusted over, the virus can no longer be spread.
Since you have never had chicken pox, you would not get shingles, you would get chicken pox. That’s how the virus works. Shingles itself is not contagious – no one will get shingles from your friend. These sites explain how it works.

George asks…
when is someone contagious with shingles?
I have a 9 month old baby who has not been vaccinated with the chicken pox shot yet and two weeks ago my dad came over to visit. The day after he left he found out he had shingles. He didn’t know it when he visited us. Would he have been contagious on that day to my baby. He didn’t hold her much. Maybe a couple of minutes. It has been 2 weeks.

admin answers:
It’s very possible your baby will get chickenpox. The average incubation period is 14 to 16 days but can be shorter or longer. If three or four weeks have passed and your baby doesn’t come down with them, she’s probably going to be ok.

Sharon asks…
Is SHINGLES contagious?
I have an aunt who is 62 yrs old and with diabetes and is diagnosed to have SHINGLES. There’s other old person in the house and children who haven’t got chickenpox. Is it contagious? Do we have to quarantine her?

admin answers:
Yes it is contagious to people who have not yet had chicken pox – It sounds like you know…you don’t catch shingles from someone with shingles, you catch chickenpox from someone with shingles, but it may be too late for quarantining anyone. The only phase when this disease is contagious is when the patient has developed blisters with clear fluid and the rash covering the blisters has not developed crusts. It is spread by contact, not by sneezing, coughing or standing too close.

Charles asks…
Is Shingles contagious?
My friend has Shingles and sometimes she drinks out of my drink but she doesn’t put her mouth on it (like a bottle of soda and tips it to pour into her mouth)..
I hope it isn’t contagious in anyway.
I HAVE had chicken pox.

admin answers:
No. Shingles is not contagious. If you had NOT had the chicken pox, however, you could get the chicken pox from contact with your friend.
P.s. Regardless of this fact, it really is not a good idea to share sodas. She could transfer other illnesses to you unwittlingly (or visa versa).

Sandra asks…

admin answers:
Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox. The virus can live outside of the body for up to 24 hours.
