Your Questions About Shingles

Richard asks…

Can shingles cause leg pain?

I’ve read online that it’s mostly chest and stomach affected, but I was wondering, can the pain and rash be on legs?

I feel really unwell, and have a burning sensation on the skin on my lower legs, my temp is up and it’s only the skin on my legs and the top of my back that hurts.

I’m very tired, and not really hungry, with waves of nausea. I also have a headache that comes and goes during the day. My daughter has chicken pox which is why shingles came to mind.

Anyone? How long would it take for the spots to appear after the onset of pain?
My skin is really sore 🙁 and my face is hot on the same side as my leg hurts. The pain is only on the left side of my body.

admin answers:

Shingle starts as an itchy area followed by small blisters that are confined to a well- defined stripe on the body, and typically on one side of the body.

In about 72 hours, the skin gets more blisters the skin pain begins, In a very acute infection, the skin will be red and weepy, and will burn like fire.

Since Shingles lives in a single motor/sensory nerve root, the muscle that is controlled by that nerve will ache tremendously. The effects could take 6 weeks to return to normal.

Does Post Herapetic Neuralgia from Shingles cause lower back pain ??

I had shingles 14 years ago while pregnant.

I am a 37 year old female.

For over seven years now when someone touches my lower back in any way i scream in pain. I have been to several doctors, 2 were back specialists, 3 choiropractors, 1 theropist, acupunture. Not one doctor understands why i am like this.

No medicine helps.

The only thing that shows up in my blood is Epstein Barr Syndrome. They all say its no big deal, almost everyone has it.

I do have epelepsy (grandmal and pitimal) and have been taking depekene for over 25 years. Taking depo provera for about 15 years. Had 2 epedorals from c-sections and while pregnant 15 years ago had shingles. Could any of these be a factor?

My xrays and MRI’s show mild arthritis in the lumbosacral articulation at the L5-S1 level. The pain level is much more than mild.

I was told that Shingles could still carry a virus that will never go away, is this true and what helps the pain ???

admin answers:

Anyone who ever had Chicken pox or a cold sore (or herpes) carries the virus and from that can come shingles. I luckily got over my shingles but I know a lady who is 88 and in pain everyday on her left side from shingles she had when she was younger. She won’t take medicine, but my doctor gave me Valtrex (what they use for genital herpes) and the pain stopped. I don’t know with epilepsy you can take it, but you could ask your doctor about it. I hope it goes away, it is horrible pain.

Lizzie asks…

Can contact with a person with shingles cause an outbreak of herpes?

A good friend of mine has always been very open with me and I knew she had herpes which she contracted about 10 years ago. Since meeting her new partner she hasn’t had a serious outbreak (for about 7 years) but recently had a very bad outbreak. We have been trying to figure out why and I put it down to stress as she has had a lot on her plate but the doctor told her that it is linked with chicken pox and shingles virus, she was in contact with someone who had shingles a week or so before the outbreak, could this have triggered it?

admin answers:

Let me explain how herpes and singles linked:
Herpes Virus is a family of viruses – including herpes I/II, varicella zoster virus (VZV), and others. VZV commonly causes chicken-pox in children and both shingles and postherpetic neuralgia in adults.

Saying that VZV could cause an outbreak is like saying Epstein Bar virus (also a virus in the herpes family) could cause an outbreak. It simply is not so.

Susan asks…

cure or cause for shingles?

how do you get shingles is it contagious by touch, or is it an after affect of the chicken pox. i got them on my feet and ankles when i deveoped a nasty skin ulcer from diabetes. are they related??

admin answers:

Chicken pox is caused by the Herpes Simplex virus. Once the chicken pox is gone the virus remains in your system and can reappear as Shingles. Anyone who has not had Chicken Pox or the vaccine for Chicken Pox can get Chicken Pox if they come in direct contact with the fluid in the blisters you have with Shingles. You can get Shingles more than once. When your immune system is low it’s easier to get Shingles, which is probably why you got them when you had the skin ulcer due to diabetes. There is a new vaccine that people who have had Chicken Pox can get so that if they do get Shingles it will be a mild case, but once you have Shingles the vaccine won’t help you.
