Sandy asks…
can teennagers get vaccine for shingles?
I have chicken pox and have read and seen pictures of shingles and I’m terrified to get them when I’m older, is there any way to avoid getting shingles?

admin answers:
The best way to prevent shingles is to get exposed to chickenpox as often as you can. So if you hear of anyone you know, child or adult, who has chickenpox, go visit them! An exposure every few years is probably enough to provide strong protection.
“Dr. Frank,” a shingles vaccine already exists. Http://www.fda.gov/downloads/BiologicsBloodVaccines/Vaccines/ApprovedProducts/UCM132831.pdf It is for people 60 years and older. And here is the actual reason why the UK does not vaccinate routinely for chickenpox.
“In the UK vaccination is not done because introduction of a routine childhood vaccination might drive up the age at which those who are non-immune get the illness (chickenpox tends to be more severe the older you are), and the incidence of shingles may increase. The United Kingdom is waiting to see what happens in countries where vaccination is routine.”
By the way, the incidence of shingles has increased in the United States since the chickenpox vaccine was licensed.
Also, “Dr. Frank,” there is a monovalent varicella vaccine, http://www.fda.gov/downloads/BiologicsBloodVaccines/Vaccines/ApprovedProducts/UCM142812.pdf and it is actually used more often than the MMRV in the United States, because it was found that the MMRV caused twice as many seizures than when the MMR and varicella vaccine were given separately, in the same visit.
