Your Questions About Shingles

James asks…

How does one calculate the number of bundled packs of shingles needed to reroof a home?

I know the square footage of the area that is to be reshingled. I am using architectural shingles. I know shingles are bundled in packs of 26 or so. Since only a portion of the shingle is exposed, I know I will need more square feet of shingle than I have of roof area. How do I calculate this?

admin answers:

It take 3 bundles to equal a square.

Roof rectangle size: 44′ x 16′ = 704 sq. Ft.
Total square footage for 2 rectangles = 704 x 2 = 1408 sq. Ft
A bundle of shingles has 21 shingles that cover about 32 sq. Ft.
1408’/32 = 44 bundles

Ruth asks…

When diagnosed with shingles can my employer legally share that information with whoever calls my work number?

Instead of asking to take a message they tell the person I am not there because I have shingles. Is this legal to disclose personal information? I live in Michigan.

admin answers:

An employer can not disclose any information pertaining to an employees medical condition. Medical information may only discussed/shared with the STD insurance carrier and with the companies HR representative for the purpose of determining FMLA eligibility. All medical information on an employee must be kept separate from an employees personal record.

Thus, in this case it is illegal for an employer or one of it’s agents to release your medical information.

Best wishes.

Mark asks…

How many asphalt shingles are in a package?

Asphalt shingles are sold in packages.
How many 3 tab shingles are in a package?
How many laminated strip (architectural) shingles are in a package?

admin answers:

That depends on the quality of the shingles, (years/life rating).

To buy enough shingles to do the job, you need to know the area of the roof, figured in what is called squares. A square is an area 10′ X10′, or 100 square feet. Then decide which style of shingle you want to use, and see how many bundles they require to cover a square. You should buy enough bundles to cover the area, plus 10% more for waste, caps, and the starter course.
With 3 tabs, it’s usually 3 bundles per sq., with around 27 shingles per bundle. With laminated shingles it could be 4 or 5 bundles per square, depending on quality/thickness/life span.
But if you buy metric shingles, all of that might change.

Personally, i like to buy more than 10% extra and save the leftovers in case you need to make a repair, or suffer damage at a later date. That way you have a match in color and style, and don’t have a mismatched roof after the repair is made.
Good luck, i hope this helps answer your question, car dude.

Chris asks…

How can I lighten asphalt shingles?

Had a repair done on roof leak. Maybe 60 sq ft total area of shingles replaced. The problem is that the shingles were mislabeled. Thought using Cedar Brown but instead Autumn Brown. Not much of a color difference at all. The Autumn looks like the Cedar but the Autumn Brown is just a little brighter color.

Can these new asphalt shingles be bleached or something to fade them a little. It would be better to find an alternative to redoing these shingles at this time for many reasons. I just need to make the color match a little better. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

admin answers:

No easy answer. Even the same color will vary when added at later time. After a while you won’t realy notice it.

Donna asks…

How to extend roof shingles over edge so that can drop into my gutters?

My roof shingles are flush with with the eve so that when the water pours off of the roof it misses the gutter. I have been told I need to extend the shingles out so that the water can run from the last shingle to the gutter. How is that done? Please give me simple directions because I am slow. I can probably do it but don’t assume I know anything. I can’t afford to hire a roofer.
Thanks

I don’t know where some of these people get their terms for construction materials.
Your problem is not the position of the shingles. In fact your guttering is positioned to low on the fascia board, or not far enough out from the fascia board. This is a common problem when a house is re-roofed and the old layer of shingles are left in place. Sometimes the roofers (instead of cutting back the old shingles and removing the roof starter strip) just add another pc. Of roof edge metal over the old which moves the edge of roof out further.Or you simply need to raise your gutter up if you can.
You can simply remove the existing guttering and build out your existing fascia board with another pc. Of wood fascia board probably a 1″ x 6″ or even a 2″ x 6″ if you fascia board is way back. Prime and paint it good before installation.
Then re-install your guttering which will mean you will need to adapt the elbows and downspout pipe by adding a longer pc. Of downspout between the drop out and the house.
You can always wrap the fascia with aluminum later when you have the money.
Normally the roof edge (this is the pc. Of metal that is placed on the roof deck at all edges prior to installing the shingles) just hangs over the fascia board 3/4″ to 1″.
So, add the wood fascia board until the edge of your shingles is about the same distance from the new surface of the new fascia board.
