Your Questions About Shingles

Lisa asks…

How much to pay for shingles replacement in Charlotte NC?

I live in Charlotte NC, I need to replace about 60 Square feet of shingles. I will buy the materials, all I need is labor hand.

admin answers:

The shingles should be about $75p/sq for 3-tab, and $95 for composition/dimensional (30yr) shingles. If you are planning on supervising the work yourself, your best bet for labor hands is to go talk to the reps at the shingle supplier you are purchasing from. If you aren’t purchasing for a supplier and are planning on using Home Depot ot Lowe’s, still stop by a roofing supply house to see if they can point you toward qualified labor hands. If you are looking for a contractor to do the whole job, your probably looking at about $75-$100p/sq. If the job is only lay new shingles over the existing roof. If you’re looking to have shingles removed first add about $50-$60 p/sq. You can save some serious cash if you know roofing and just hire experienced roofing hands, and supervise them.

How long does it take shingles to heal while on medication?

Hi, I had shingles for about 2 or 3 days before I went to the doctor, he gave me medication and I started taking it a few days ago, this is my first time getting shingles and I am a fairly healthy person, how long will it take for my shingles to start healing? & how will I know when they start healing?

admin answers:

The rash of shingles generally heals within 2 weeks or so. The pain can last longer, but often does not in healthy or younger individuals. Usually shingles is a one time thing with no recurrence. You are contagious for chicken pox until the shingles heal over. They just dry up and peel off.

What is wrong with adding a layer of shingles on top of another instead of tearing the old ones off first?

As a young man I helped roof a few houses around my hometown to make some extra money. People didn’t remove their old shingles until the built up 4 layers. When I talk to roofers today they talk like that is a sin and you should tear the old shingles off every time you need a new roof. Why go to that expense every time you need a roof?

admin answers:

The main reason is when you are putting a second layer over the old shingles the surface to which you are nailing your shingles is not flat.

What provides the good seal on a roof is the shingles laying entirely flat and sealing one course to the next. Putting a second layer over the first will result in a roof that is lumpy. Not only that but over time with age and deterioration the old shingles will want to curl up and you risk leaks from wind driven rain being driven up under the shingles.

If you clean off the old shingles and put down felt the felt provides a second level of protection against leaks and the entire surface is very flat. It gives a better appearance as well.

How do I know if my shingles contain asbestos?

Is there some way of telling or do I have to have someone inspect them? I am removing shingles from my garage.

admin answers:

You must take one to a local lab and have it tested. That is the only way to know More likely to have asbestos is any flashing or patches that you are removing.

What is used to tuck under roof shingles when adding a metal patio cover?

What is used to tuck under roof shingles when adding a metal patio cover with ridges on it? So obviously I cannot tuck the metal roofing with ridges under the roof shingles so is there a certain metal that they sale to tuck under the roof shingles and take shape of metal roofing also? If so what is it called? I seen the metal that they use for ridges on metal roofs but that has a hump on it and dont think that is what is used in my case.. Please post..

admin answers:

Generally the recommended solution is a two part system:

1. A “L” shaped metal transition flashing that goes under the shingles and over the metal.
2. Rubber closures that between the ribs of the metal roof, sealing it off. (These actually go down before the transition flashing.)

See:

It works about the same except for going under shingles instead of metal roofing at the top.
