Your Questions About Shingles

James asks…

Is it possible to have shingles twice and without the rash?

I had shingles when I was 20(I am 27 now) and feel like they are coming on again( pain, flu like symptoms). So far no rash but should I wait for the rash to develop to see the doc?

admin answers:

It’s possible to have shingles MULTIPLE times: if you know the symptoms are similar and your doctor treated you previously for shingles, let him know now that you’re having the same symptoms. He might be able to prescribe an anti-viral medication for you.

Concerning the virus commonly called shingles?

The doctor says I have atypical shingles; I have an area that spreads from my navel to the ribs behind my shoulders that is numb, with a burning pain. I have no rash, no blisters, no other symptoms. Nothing I’ve read about shingles indicates that these two symptoms qualify. I just have a feeling it’s something else but I don’t know what. Any ideas?

Lisa asks…

Does this sound like shingles or allergies?

I have had a rash since Thursday night. I thought it was an allergic reaction to a new food i tried but the rash is still here. There are three clumps of bumps on my right lower stomach and one on my lower back. They only itch when something rubs up against it and they don’t hurt unless i accidentally scratches it but the back one has a slight dull sting every now and then. The rashes range in size from a quarter to an inch long. It doesnt go in a strip but they are on the same side. Could this be shingles? I didnt have any flu-like symptoms before the rashes and no itching or pain before they appeared. Also, I took 3 doses of Benadryl yesterday and woke up this morning to fewer bumps but the ones that are still there have black dots in the middle. Also, if it is a food allergy rash, could it still be there because I keep touching it and could have possibly infected them? Oh and Im 22 years old if that helps.

admin answers:

You’re young for shingles – might be chickenpox or something.

See a doc.

Jenny asks…

Numbness in feet with Shingles?

Last weekend I was given Valtrex to take for Shingles. I have no rash with the shingles, just all other symptoms. I have been on the medication 4 days now, and the shingle pain is getting better. Now I am having numbness in both feet. No tingling, no prickly feelings, just a little numb. I can still feel touch, and everything. I don’t know whether this could be related to the Valtrex, or if it could be a symptom of the shingles. I have looked on the internet, and found a couple of places where they mention numbness of the feet with Shingles. Anyone have any advice?? I was thinking of waiting to go to the doc until my medicine is finished. My last day of medication would be Sunday. Please help!!!

admin answers:

You need to call your doctor’s office and tell them what is going on. Only they can determine if this is related to shingles or if it’s something else altogether. Don’t wait. Take care of it now before it gets worse.
