Sandy asks…
Does someone with herpes zoster (shingles) have to be placed in reverse isolation?
I had a nursing exam today and this was part of the test! It was one of those questions that you had to check all that apply. I can’t find anything about this in my textbook! Thanks for any help!

admin answers:
My guess (and it is just a guess) is Yes, a person with shingles would benefit from reverse isolation.
Shingles present themselves in debilitated people, or those fighting infections, for example.
Visitors should wear masks, to help prevent the already weakened patient from receiving more bacteria to deal with.

Charles asks…
Confused about virus names – chicken pox (varicella zoster) and shingles (herpes zoster)?
Okay, chicken pox is Varicella zoster. Shingles is Herpes zoster. Shingles is known to be the “grown up” chicken pox, and you can get it when the chicken pox virus you had as a kid (varicella zoster) becomes dormant and then returns as an adult. How does it change from varicella zoster to herpes zoster? What is bothering me about this is that it looks like they don’t even belong to the same genus.

admin answers:
They are both caused by the same virus- varicella zoster virus (VSV) Varicella being chickenpox and shingles being zoster. It is from the herpes virus family. Its just nomenclature. Carol asks…
Pleeease help…?Herpes Zoster? (SHINGLES)?
Somebody on here said I may have Herpes Zoster (shingles) I have these small red painful lumps on a few fingers, does this sound like it? they started about 5 weeks ago now, has anybody had them before? what causes it? could it be stress from school
Lilly thanks but all the site son th e internet say that you can get herpes zoster (shingles) on your fingers, it even shows pictures

admin answers:
It could be shingles, but it does not sound like the typical presentation of singles. You might consider visiting the doctor to see what’s causing the problem. Shingles usually appear as tiny blisters or a rash, and not usually described as lumps, but if the lumps break open an turn red, then it is consistent with shingles. Shingles also usually follow a single nerve path, and not multiple paths, but the patterns vary. Shingles can occur anywhere on the body, and the problems can last weeks or months.
The pain caused by shingles is similar to a number of herpetic infections – and the pain of herpetic infections is unmistakable: a combination of burning, itching, pain and hypersensitivity to touch.
If you have shingles, the virus is always present in you body, and it occasionally flares up. The reasons for the flare ups are not really known. Stress seems like a possible factor causing the flare ups, but there really isn’t anything someone can do to prevent flareups from occurring.
The herpetic whitlow in the previous post seems a more likely cause than shingles.

John asks…
is peeling of area affected with shingles (herpes zoster) normal?
i was diagnosed with shingles a few weeks ago, the area affected is now peeling. Is this normal?

admin answers:
Your skin is peeling off .means the area is going for a recovery and drying up .it means also itchy but do not scratch it so as to prevent infection.
