Your Questions About Shingles

Charles asks…

Question about shingles.?

I had chicken pox as a child….I now have shingles…not even 40 yrs old. I work in healthcare with children…could it have been that I was around a child incubating the chicken pox virus and it reactivated the old virus in me causing me to have shingles?? Going through a lot of stress also, just had a baby 7 mos ago with 4 other children at home….busy, busy household!

admin answers:

Shingles is caused by reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. After an episode of chickenpox, the virus resides in cells of the nervous system, where it can reside quietly for decades. It belongs to a group of viruses called herpesviruses, which also includes the herpes simplex virus (HSV); HSV-1 causes cold sores and HSV-2 causes genital herpes.

It is not possible to “catch” shingles from another person. Children or adults who have never had chickenpox or the chickenpox vaccine, however, can develop chickenpox after direct (skin to skin) contact with a shingles blister, or less commonly, following skin to skin or airborne (air droplets) exposure to a person with widespread zoster.

Mark asks…

my child has chickenpox will i catch shingles again from her pox?

hi i have had shingles in the past i had them for 6 weeks cause they got infected from me trying to dry them out. my child got sent home from school today she’s the 6th student in her class this week to go home with chicken pox . i know you can get chicken pox from shingles but can you get shingles from the chicken pox?? i’m terrified of catching shingles again

admin answers:

What do you mean will you “catch shingles again”? Who told you you’re cured? You have herpes zoster and always will. A for chicken pox, you’re immune. You’ve already had chicken pox. That’s how you ended up with herpes zoster.

Mandy asks…

Is it Shingles or Herpes simplex?

So this is my third bout with Shingles. Or so I thought. The first two time was a very clear cut case of shingles. Flu like symptoms a few days before the bumps came up. Eventually the rash spread from the side of the spine across my ribs and under the breast up to the mid-line and not crossing over. I have bruises and felt like my ribs were crushed. This time everything is the same except it hasn’t spread that far yet. It is confined to the one spot where it had started the previous times. (Thank GOD) I’m in extreme pain, and the doctor I saw this time is trying to tell me it isn’t shingles but instead Herpes Simplex. First of all, I feel very doubtful over this. I have never even had a fever blister before. How could I have Herpes. She wants to diagnose me with this, without even doing a test or culture. She said she couldn’t do a culture since it wasn’t a blister. This was all after she wanted to tell me because I had gotten a tattoo 4 years ago I needed to be tested for HIV, even though I have been tested twice since with each of my pregnancies. She seemed intent on pegging me with an STD. I just don’t understand this. My husband wants me to go to another doctor tomorrow. One that isn’t free (i went to the health center on campus). My problem with this is if the Shingles is not treated properly then I can end with nerve damage. Which we thought I was going to have a problem with the first time with shingles since I had waited so long to go to the doctor with it. I was in severe pain for a whole month! I would just like to hear someone’s input on this before I go shell out money to get rediagnosed. Would Herpes Simplex cause all of these same symptoms. The preceding pain across the ribs. The bruises. The feeling of crushed ribs. Pain in my shoulder and and the bicep of my arm? Fatique?
Also, because the first diagnosis of shingles last year, I haven’t minded touching the rash because I knew I couldn’t spread it all over my body. I made sure to keep my hands washed because of my young children, but my husband also didn’t mind rubbing cornstarch on it to help relieve the pins and needles feeling for me. Wouldn’t we have spread it to other places if I was touching it and so was he? I brought this up to the doc and she could only say we were very fortunate to not have spread it. Doesn’t make any sense. Okay, I know this was very long, and I appreciate anyone that read this whole question and for any input or opinions.
Thank you in advance.

If you don’t have blisters, I would tend to think you are having a recurrence of shingles. For some reason, shingles tend to produce fewer blisters with subsequent outbreaks.

Helen asks…

Please Help, My 10 year old sister has gone mad and wants to die?

Ok, I’m 14 with a younger sister of 10. She started her periods a couple of months ago which may have something to do with this.

She got shingles yesterday so is in a bad mood. We have been told that it’s from stress. My sister says it’s from my mother causing her the stress. I, however see things a lot differently.

I see my sister as very spoilt, she kicks and screams when she doesn’t get her own way. She antagnoises my mother, my father and myself. My father and her get along really well but he’s kept his nose out of this one.

What happened today was, earlier my mother was watching tv. She never gets to watch her own programs because of my spoilt sister. Whilst my mother was watching tv, my sister came into the room and started F***ing about, irritating me and my mother. We gave no response and instead got up and walked out of the room. Then as soon as we left she grabbed hold of the control and watched her programs. Me, being rather pissed off she had got her own way, AGAIN. I decided to return the favour and made a racket whilst she was watching tv. Sister then started using violence towards me. I didn’t do anything because i am a hell of a lot bigger than her, which made her even more angry.

It then somehow got to ‘kill me’, ‘kill me’. I’m not sure how and I’m not sure why. Then she was screaming at my mother. I want you to kill me. And was then screaming that my mother was the one who caused her shingles and all sorts. Really upsetting for my mother whom started to cry.

I don’t think my mother caused my sisters shingles, she caused them herself because she gets really really moody when she doesn’t get her own way.

What do you propose I do, or any member of the family do. She is a rather strange child and I want to help because she really knows how to get to my mum. It’s horrible.

Thanks in advance.

Daniel asks…

I am 6 months pregnant and have had a really hard pregnancy. Am I being selfish?

I was hospitalized for 9 days with a bacterial infection in my stomach, I am severly anemic and I am so physically tired from the anemia and pregnancy. My step daughters brother just came down with shingles and I am responsible to watch her this weekend because my husband works. I am afraid of getting something from my step daughter when I don’t know if shes touched her brothers open sores. From reading on line thats how shingles can spread. Shingles I think can cause birth defects in fetuses. Am I wrong that I want to protect my unborn child?

admin answers:

You aren’t being selfish at all. Your health and the health of your unborn child comes first at this point. You need to let them know that other arrangements need to be made for watching her this weekend. Don’t feel the least bit guilty about it.
