John asks…
Would you please tell me about your experience with Herpes Zoster and Shingles (the aftermath of chicken pox)?
I am over 50 and have just had an outbreak of shingles. I am interested in anyone’s experience of this, but especially if you are over 50. I have read some very disconcerting information that the pain can last for a very long time after the blisters have healed. Also, has anyone experienced joint pain while having shingles?
I need some encouragement.
Thanks.
Thank you to everyone who responded. Hopefully my case won’t be so severe as one of my respondees. I can’t imagine having to sleep packed in ice.

I had shingles earlier this year when I was 15…it hurt my hip alot because the doc. Said they come off your spinal bone and connect and go from there. And it went to my hip. It’ll itch alot. Don’t itch it though…. Its contagious [im sure you know this though] and unless yours is very severe which it probably is since its usually only seen in older people. Just take the medicine and do what the doc says. You’ll be healed in no time.

Robert asks…
How long will it take shingles/herpes zoster to go away? (14 yrs old)?
I’ve had it for about a week, im 14…i know its odd to have at my age, but basically its freaking killing me, i cant sleep because of it. I just want to know how much longer i need to deal with this…

admin answers:
The infection is almost on its way out at a week, however there are 2 other problems. Firstly the lesions themselves need to heal, secondly unfortunately the nerves supplying the dermatome, area of skin that is affected by the infection, can continue to be painful for extended periods after the infection is long gone.

Ruth asks…
what is the best doctor for shingles (herpes zoster viris )?
my mother has the shingles and she has a lot
of nerve pain on her head and face it is also in
her right eye . what is the best doctor for her to
go to, maybe a neurologists.

admin answers:
She needs to go to her family doctor first because I think the treatment for that is limited. The next step is probably a Dermatologist.

Laura asks…
is herpes-zoster(shingles) a bacteria or a virus?

Thomas asks…

admin answers:
Zostavax is a vaccine developed by Merck & Co. Which has proven successful in preventing half the cases of herpes zoster in a study of 38,000 people who received the vaccine. The vaccine also reduced by two-thirds the number of cases of postherpetic neuralgia. However, prior to the vaccine, it has long been known that adults received natural immune boosting from contact with children infected with varicella. This helped to suppress the reactivation of herpes zoster. In Massachusetts, herpes zoster incidence increased 90%, from 2.77/1000 to 5.25/1000 in the period of increasing varicella vaccination 1999-2003. The effectiveness of the varicella vaccine itself is dependent on this exogenous (outside) boosting mechanism. Thus, as natural cases of varicella decline, so has the effectiveness of the vaccine.
The intake of micronutrients, including antioxidant vitamins, A, C, E and vitamin B, as well as fresh fruit, may reduce the risk of developing shingles. In one study, patients who consumed less than one serving of fruit a day had three times the risk as those who consumed over three servings per day. For those aged 60 or more, micronutrient and vegetable intake had a similar lowering of risk. A recent study evaluated the effects of two types of behavioral intervention, Tai Chi and health education, on healthy adults, who, after 16 weeks of the intervention, were vaccinated with VARIVAX, a live attenuated Oka/Merck Varicella zoster virus vaccine.
