Your Questions About Shingles

John asks…

How do you get Ramsay – Hunt Syndrome?

My best friend came down with Ramsay – Hunt Syndrome two weeks ago. I know that it is caused by the virus that also causes shingles or chickenpox. She wants me to come see her, but I’m afraid I’ll catch it. She say’s it isn’t contagous, but it is a viral disease. Am I wrong to thinks I might be able to catch it?

admin answers:

It is caused by the same virus that causes the chickenpox/shingles. The virus name is herpes zoster oticus. It is an infection of the facial nerve. As far as how it is contracted in the first place, it can be triggered by a recent illness, stress, something that activates the virus that lies dormant in the body. Depending how long she has had this and is being treated with medications, she may no longer be contagious. Usually, after 10-14 days, the incubation and contagious stage has passed. If you have had the chickenpox/shingles then you should be fine but, there is a small chance that you may contract it. Many people who have had the chickenpox, can develop shingles later on in life. I hope this helps. Here is website:

Shingles and Gout?

I have shingles now, and i had gout about six months ago. i’ve been shot with a 9mm gun before and that hurt less.
do i have more serious health conditions that’s causing all these painful diseases?

admin answers:

SHingles is simply a re-emergence of the chicken pox virus…. I have had it, too, it is painful… Gout is recurring, and usually not a sign of other significant health problems. You can help prevent flare ups of gout….. Lifestyle changes are needed. Drinking alcohol is bad for it, especially binge drinking, as is eating organ meats ( liver, for example)

Susan asks…

What causes a muscle twitch.?

A muscle near my shoulder has been twitching on and off all day. I think it’s my…teres major…maybe…but it’s bugging me.
I know that some nerve diseases can cause twitching…but the only nerve problem i’ve ever had was the shingles…that just spreads to your nerve endings and makes them really sore.
What are some other causes of muscle twitches?

admin answers:

Try stretching it to lengthen the fibers. Heat may help. Muscles can do that especially if you have exercised it recently. It’s probably not a problem unless it becomes very constant and incoporates the rest of the shoulder girdle or becomes very painful.

Question regarding Autoimmune disorders?

I’m 21 yrs old and i have celiac disease but i also get shingles quite frequently as well as canker sores in my mouth. Not only that but I also have vitiligo *not sure of spelling but i lose pigment in my skin. Now i know all these can be caused by problems with your immune system and i feel they are all connected somehow but doctors always kind of shrug it off cause I appear healthy but I don’t feel healthy. Everyday I wake up i just feel bad in general. Really the only time I have felt healthy is when i’ve been put on steriods when i get shingles really bad. I was just wondering if anyone on here had any suggestions for me.

admin answers:

Hang in there Buddy! When I first got vitiligo there was nothing being done to find the cause. Now there is a whole host of knowledge about it. I suspect that there could be connections between at least some of your conditions. I have found that the Harvard Medical School site is extremely informative and I bet you will too . You might try it and see if you can find something to support your views.
