babys around people with shingles?
Can you please explain this,
A healthy person can never develop Shingles disease after he/she comes in informal contact (not involving much of physical contact, or a direct contact with the rash) with the patient suffering from Shingles, or sneezing or coughing of patient when the healthy person is in vicinity. The only phase when this disease is contagious is when the patient has developed blisters with clear fluid and the rash covering the blisters has not developed crusts.
Are they saying the only way it spreads is if you touch the rash or is it saying it can be spread if the person coughs or sneezes on you or near you? My mom get this sometimes, not really bad though and its kinda on her butt check where its always covered, she started to get it and took the meds, theres only a patch of red skin, no blisters, and she wants to see my baby 2morrow and im freaking out!!

“Shingles can only occur after someone has had chickenpox. If someone who has already had chickenpox comes into contact with the fluid from shingles blisters, they will not “catch” shingles. However, people who have not had chickenpox could become infected with herpes zoster and develop chickenpox. They should avoid contact with the shingles rash or with any materials that may have touched the shingles rash or blisters. ”

*I have never had the chicken pox but I have had shingles at the age of 16.

Sandy asks…
Is immunity to chicken pox impossible if you had chicken pox and measles at the same time?
I just recently came down with shingles (I had chicken pox as a kid). We have a 10-month old baby. Now my doctor claimed my shingles was not contagious, but my baby is starting to show symptoms of chicken pox. My mother-in-law baby sat the baby the other day. She claims she is NOT immune to chicken pox because when she was kid she allegedly had a condition she calls “half-measles, half chicken pox” Now this is a person who tends to get things fuddled up. She claims her doctor said since she had measles on half her body and chicken pox on the other half she could get chicken pox again.

A reinfection of chicken pox in someone who had it is rare. It can recur in persons who received the vaccine more easily, although it is usually a mild case.
If your mother-in-law had chicken pox as a child she is most likey immune to it and also to measles.
A person who is infected with shingles can infect a child with chicken pox. Http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/shingles/shingles.htm

This right from a Pediatrician at Childrens Hospital…
According to the Red Book which is the source for infectious stuff in Pediatrics, the BIG RISK is if Mom has never had varicella (Chicken Pox). Then the baby would not have her
antibodies on board. The Worst is when Mom gets chicken pox the first time right near or just after delivery…
You can give immune globulin (this is antibody not a vaccination) to high risk people including infants…
IN this case unless Mom has never had Chicken Pox, I do not
think the boyfriends zoster would warrant it…
Hope this helps…Get to Hospital ASAP

Linda asks…
What can I do to avoid the baby from getting chickenpox?
I had shingles a week ago. I thought it was a rash. But after it got painful, I went to the doctor and she told me I got shingles and gave me meds. When I search online, they said that shingles is contagious to those who never had chicken pox.
Here is the problem. The 7 month old baby never had chicken pox before and I have been with him everyday. The shingles is in my chest area so it was covered with clothes. Can the baby get it?
This morning he pulled my collar and Im not sure if he touch it because I pulled his hand away.
What can I do? Should I bring the baby to the clinic?
Personally I think 7 months is too young to get it. 2 years old is better. and plus he is not my baby, his parents is out of town and I took care of him. The baby is always sick and have low immune systm, I dont want to get blame for causing him chicken pox.

This doesnt really answer your question but may i suggest that instead of avoiding your baby from getting chickenpox, just let it come and go because its better for him to get it while he’s still young so that it doesnt affect him later in life, like when he’s in school or even later when he has a family of his own 🙂

Laura asks…
Would you let her babysit?
My husband and I have a church festival to coordinate next weekend (Sat & Sun). We have a 12 week old baby and don’t want her outside the full two days in the heat. So we asked my husband’s mom (Baby’s grandma) to come and watch her at our place while we are coordinating the festival. I am uncomfortable with this as she is our only one and I am probably being a little over protective. (Of course I trust my mom more, but she is busy).
Anyway, my husband’s grandma (His mom’s mom) came down with Shingles. So his mom is taking care of her all week and then coming down to watch our baby this weekend.
Is that ok?? She has been exposed to shingles all week and then comes down to watch our newborn?? That seems not ok to me. Maybe shingles isn’t contagious and its fine, I dont know. I will call her peditrition tomorrow and ask, but I am curious if anyone knows.

admin answers:
Shingles is contagious and I wouldn’t want her to watch the baby either.
