How many layers of shingles on my roof?
I have a one level rancher home in MD, I was going to sign a contract with the roofing company who offers me $8000 for 3000 sq ft , but they will charge me extra ( $40 100sq ft ) for removing more than 2 layers of shingles, so I am not sure now if I shall go with them while other 3 bids I received offer $7800 — $8500 but will remove all the old shingles. How do I know if my roof have 2 layers or 3 layers? There are 4 layers (2) between the flashing and on top of the gutter, but on the rake (edge) , some have 6 layers (3), some 4 , why there are extra layers on the rake? I did ask one of the roofer, he said there were 2 layers. I am just very confused. Please help! Thanks

Most city ordinances will not allow anything more than 3 layers. I had the same issue and live in Michigan and was given an estimate of 3500 for tear off and new that included wood if needed as well. It always pays to shop around and be candid who those when letting them know that you will do so. Additionally have them itemize the estimates you are getting..what is charged for debris removal…what is charged for materials…labor, etc. Those prices seem a bit high to me. Also inquire about their business sense. Are they licensed and bonded and ask them for 3 other neighborhood customers you can call and speak with about quality of work. Go to your local hardware store and ask for referrals and price the materials yourself. All of these things should help.

5 weeks ago a bad pain started in my side and right breast. I have been told it might be shingles?
I posted a question here around 3 weeks ago after having a bad pain in the front and side of my chest . It wakes me up and seems to go round to the spine which feels sore. It is less sharp and more a dull burning and getting better but very slowly and the last doctor I saw a week ago said I may have had shingles although she was not sure. I get good days and painful days and have been prescribed anti-inflammatories and amytryptalline to block the pain signals. I feel very sluggish and have not been at work. My doctor now says that she is not sure what she is signing me off for!! Fortunately my chest x ray is clear of infection. Is it possible to get shingles withour a significant rash?

admin answers:
Absolutely, my husband had shingles in his back, around his shoulder blade area. He had burning and pain, but no rash. He also found out about this time he had prostate cancer, so we didn’t know if this was connected to that or not. He had all kind of ex-rays, CT, MRI..ECT…, but nothing showed up. We also found out that shingles will not show up on ex-ray.
After suffering with this for awhile, his doctor prescribed medication for the shingles. His pain and burning slowly went away. It was the shingles.
Dr. Said that in some people, the shingles stays beneath the skin, so this makes it hard to diagnose. My husband spent a lot before he found out it was actually the shingles.

Buing a home. Had inspection on sat. Lots of probs. Main concern is roof. Should seller fix the roof?
We are in the process of buying a home and the seller accepted our offer which was 5,000 less than the asking price contingent of the home inspection. We had the home inspection and there are lots of different things wrong; Bathtub leaks (puddles) into the basement; electrical wiring is not to code and potentially hazardous but the most concerning and costly of the probs is the roof. Which has improper ventilation, signs of leakage and moisture damage, two layers of shingles, exposed nails and blotched tar. Our realtor told the selling realtor that we need this fixed before we can proceed but he felt we were already getting a deal.. We have five days to proceed with the deal or bog out but we are hoping that the seller would replace this. IF A SELLER WANTS TO SELL THE HOUSE BADLY ENOUGH WOULDN’T BE IN THEIR BEST INTEREST TO HAVE THIS REPLACED? We could request all of the other probs fixed too but my husband and I were and are willing to fix them if they pay to fix the roof.

admin answers:
Unless its an extremely good deal and you have lots of time to work on the house I would move on and find another house. Alot of little things that seem easy and maybe inexpensive to fix can become bigger problems later and then your stuck. Leaks can have hidden dangers such as mold and rotting wood ect. I would seriously look elsewhere. The owner may not have the money to repair it and will try to sell it as is. Back out now while you have a chance. Sounds bad enough to give up on. Put your money into a better house to start. It sounds like a money pit. Electricians, plumbers ect. Are very expensive. The things you have mentioned can’t be repaired later for safety reasons. My advise KEEP LOOKING…Good Luck

My lower-left back has a mystery ailment. I need some ideas?
It has the symptoms of shingles but there is absolutely no visible sign of anything going on. I am not a hypochondriac. I have a high pain tolerance and I am telling you, this is one of the worst pains I have endured. It seems like the nerves are exposed to the air?? Please help. I have seen two different doctors. Lidocaine doesn’t help. Ugh!

admin answers:
You may have a pinched sciatic nerve.

I have a burning sensation down the left hand side of my body…?
I am 22, and I have had shingles when I was 11, and I fear it may be that again! My question is, how long should I leave it, before seeing a doctor. I have had the burning sensation for 6-7 days now, with no sign of a rash.
Any Ideas on what it could be, or some advice?

admin answers:
You should go to doctors.
