Your Questions About Shingles

Susan asks…

shingles shot?

i am over 60 and should i take this indoculation if i did not have chicken pox when i was young?

admin answers:

By the age of 60 you probably do have partial immunity to the virus. Therefore, if you do have weakened resistance for whatever reason, the virus will show up as shingles in you. Shingles is a lot more painful than chicken pox and it is definitely something to be avoided. The new vaccine pumps up your immune system and makes it less likely for you to have an outbreak of shingles at all.

will Shingles shot exacerbate a Genital Herpes outbreak?

It shouldn’t. The only people who are contraindicated in the Varicella vaccine is pregnant, immunosuppressed, certain allergies, untreated TB.

To clarify – Herpes Zoster (Shingles) is an outbreak of a latent infection. Only people who had chicken pox as a child can get Shingles, but also, childhood exposure can also have a protective benefit.

Sandy asks…

Is 30 too young to get the shot for shingles?

I had shingles for the first time 2 months ago ( I am 30) and I had a reoccurence a few days ago. Can I get a shot or am I too young?

admin answers:

The shingles vaccine is recommended for people over 60 – because the elderly are most at risk of developing shingles.

You should go to the doctor and talk about your history. The fact that you have had shingles twice so close together suggests that your immune system is not working as well as it should for someone your age. You need to have a general checkup including a full blood count and then the doctor can determine whether to give you the vaccine or not.

All the best.
