Your Questions About Shingles

Carol asks…

How many layers of shingles on my roof?

I have a one level rancher home in MD, I was going to sign a contract with the roofing company who offers me $8000 for 3000 sq ft , but they will charge me extra ( $40 100sq ft ) for removing more than 2 layers of shingles, so I am not sure now if I shall go with them while other 3 bids I received offer $7800 — $8500 but will remove all the old shingles. How do I know if my roof have 2 layers or 3 layers? There are 4 layers (2) between the flashing and on top of the gutter, but on the rake (edge) , some have 6 layers (3), some 4 , why there are extra layers on the rake? I did ask one of the roofer, he said there were 2 layers. I am just very confused. Please help! Thanks

admin answers:

Most city ordinances will not allow anything more than 3 layers. I had the same issue and live in Michigan and was given an estimate of 3500 for tear off and new that included wood if needed as well. It always pays to shop around and be candid who those when letting them know that you will do so. Additionally have them itemize the estimates you are getting..what is charged for debris removal…what is charged for materials…labor, etc. Those prices seem a bit high to me. Also inquire about their business sense. Are they licensed and bonded and ask them for 3 other neighborhood customers you can call and speak with about quality of work. Go to your local hardware store and ask for referrals and price the materials yourself. All of these things should help.

Mary asks…

5 weeks ago a bad pain started in my side and right breast. I have been told it might be shingles?

I posted a question here around 3 weeks ago after having a bad pain in the front and side of my chest . It wakes me up and seems to go round to the spine which feels sore. It is less sharp and more a dull burning and getting better but very slowly and the last doctor I saw a week ago said I may have had shingles although she was not sure. I get good days and painful days and have been prescribed anti-inflammatories and amytryptalline to block the pain signals. I feel very sluggish and have not been at work. My doctor now says that she is not sure what she is signing me off for!! Fortunately my chest x ray is clear of infection. Is it possible to get shingles withour a significant rash?

admin answers:

Absolutely, my husband had shingles in his back, around his shoulder blade area. He had burning and pain, but no rash. He also found out about this time he had prostate cancer, so we didn’t know if this was connected to that or not. He had all kind of ex-rays, CT, MRI..ECT…, but nothing showed up. We also found out that shingles will not show up on ex-ray.

After suffering with this for awhile, his doctor prescribed medication for the shingles. His pain and burning slowly went away. It was the shingles.

Dr. Said that in some people, the shingles stays beneath the skin, so this makes it hard to diagnose. My husband spent a lot before he found out it was actually the shingles.

John asks…

Buing a home. Had inspection on sat. Lots of probs. Main concern is roof. Should seller fix the roof?

We are in the process of buying a home and the seller accepted our offer which was 5,000 less than the asking price contingent of the home inspection. We had the home inspection and there are lots of different things wrong; Bathtub leaks (puddles) into the basement; electrical wiring is not to code and potentially hazardous but the most concerning and costly of the probs is the roof. Which has improper ventilation, signs of leakage and moisture damage, two layers of shingles, exposed nails and blotched tar. Our realtor told the selling realtor that we need this fixed before we can proceed but he felt we were already getting a deal.. We have five days to proceed with the deal or bog out but we are hoping that the seller would replace this. IF A SELLER WANTS TO SELL THE HOUSE BADLY ENOUGH WOULDN’T BE IN THEIR BEST INTEREST TO HAVE THIS REPLACED? We could request all of the other probs fixed too but my husband and I were and are willing to fix them if they pay to fix the roof.

admin answers:

Unless its an extremely good deal and you have lots of time to work on the house I would move on and find another house. Alot of little things that seem easy and maybe inexpensive to fix can become bigger problems later and then your stuck. Leaks can have hidden dangers such as mold and rotting wood ect. I would seriously look elsewhere. The owner may not have the money to repair it and will try to sell it as is. Back out now while you have a chance. Sounds bad enough to give up on. Put your money into a better house to start. It sounds like a money pit. Electricians, plumbers ect. Are very expensive. The things you have mentioned can’t be repaired later for safety reasons. My advise KEEP LOOKING…Good Luck

Charles asks…

My lower-left back has a mystery ailment. I need some ideas?

It has the symptoms of shingles but there is absolutely no visible sign of anything going on. I am not a hypochondriac. I have a high pain tolerance and I am telling you, this is one of the worst pains I have endured. It seems like the nerves are exposed to the air?? Please help. I have seen two different doctors. Lidocaine doesn’t help. Ugh!

admin answers:

You may have a pinched sciatic nerve.

Thomas asks…

I have a burning sensation down the left hand side of my body…?

I am 22, and I have had shingles when I was 11, and I fear it may be that again! My question is, how long should I leave it, before seeing a doctor. I have had the burning sensation for 6-7 days now, with no sign of a rash.

Any Ideas on what it could be, or some advice?

admin answers:

You should go to doctors.

Famvir ? An effective treatment of herpes

Famvir ? An effective treatment of herpes

One of the most common and highly contagious sexually transmitted infections caused by a virus is genital herpes. It is caused by the herpes virus, or herpes simplex virus to be precise. Generally, it is transmitted from one person to another during sexual activity and this includes oral, vaginal and anal sex. Blisters and small ulcers develop on and around the genitals. Once this virus enters your body, it cannot be cured, but it can certainly be treated. There are effective medications available on the market that aid in treating genital herpes. But before moving on to treatment, let us have a look at some facts herpes.

Genital herpes is widespread and one of the reasons for this is that it is highly contagious.
More than 85 million people all over the world are infected by this virus and more than 2 million new people join the list every year.
More than 90% of individuals who get infected do not see any symptoms.
The highest rates of infection are among the poor who are less educated and have multiple sexual partners.

Causes of genital herpes

This health condition is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two types of HSV: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Sores and blisters caused by both the types of this virus look almost similar. Genital herpes is spread when you come in contact with an individual who is infected. It could be sexual contact, kissing or even touching. Any type of skin-to-skin contact is capable of spreading the herpes virus. You can spread this virus even if you do not notice any symptoms of it. Generally, the first outbreak of herpes is painful while the recurring ones are mild in nature.

Sores or lesions develop on or about the penis in men and outside the vagina in women. At times, they can also occur inside the vagina. Both, men and women can experience lesions in and around the anus. The symptoms of herpes last for about two to four weeks. These symptoms include fever, headaches, vaginal discharge and painful urination. Herpes can be treated with antiviral medications such as Valtrex and Famvir. Let us have a look at some effective treatment options.

Famvir

This antiviral drug slows down the growth and spread of herpes virus so that the body can fight off the infection. Although Famvir does not cure herpes, it can treat the infection quickly. It can be used for the treatment of infections such as cold sores, shingles, genital herpes and chicken pox.

Five Ways to Know You Have Cataracts

Five Ways to Know You Have Cataracts

Article by Shane Lima

Cataracts are deposits of protein that accumulate on the eye’s lens, obscuring vision. When cataracts first begin affecting your eyes, the problem may escape notice. However, cataracts gradually worsen over time and eventually need to be corrected. Here are five symptoms you may develop when the lens of your eye begins to lose its transparency:

1. Seeing DoubleCataracts may cause you to experience double vision (diplopia). This effect sometimes shows up early in the development of a cataract. You could find yourself shaking your head and squinting to try to get rid of double images. This problem may be accompanied by eye pain as you strain to see clearly. Diabetes, stroke, shingles and many other medical conditions besides cataracts can cause diplopia, so it’s a good idea to see both your primary care doctor and an eye doctor if this symptom persists.

2. Foggy OutlookFuzzy or blurred vision is a classic symptom of cataract formation. You will probably notice this problem if a cataract forms near the center of your lens. Objects may appear foggy or unclear. The haziness can affect just one eye or both eyes. Cataracts don’t actually spread from one eye to the other, but they may develop on each lens independently. Once they begin to form, they don’t go away. However, it may take years for them to reach the point where Cataract surgery is required.

3. Light SensitivityIf bright lights cause you to blink or squint in pain, cataracts may be the culprit. Light sensitivity can impact your ability to perform normal activities. Sunglasses will help you cope with bright light during the day, but nighttime is a different matter. You may decide not to drive at night anymore because the glare of oncoming headlights bothers you too much.

4. Rapid ChangesMyopia (nearsightedness) tends to worsen as cataracts grow. If your prescription is getting stronger every year, your optometrist or ophthalmologist may perform additional tests to discover if cataracts are the cause. Stronger glasses or contacts can only adjust for the loss of visual acuity up to a point. LASIK surgery on the cornea also won’t completely correct vision for people who have already developed cataracts. LASIK doesn’t fix the underlying problem with the lens.

5. Lens AppearanceAs the lens becomes opaque, the pupil may appear to change color from black to white/yellow. Unless the condition has progressed very far, a cataract is not visible to the naked eye. By the time the cloudiness is noticeable to other people, your vision will be seriously impacted. Cataract surgery to remove the affected lens and replace it with an artificial intraocular lens such as Crystalens may be recommended. Even with cataracts that are very advanced, sight can usually be restored.

About the Author

When it comes to vision correction, procedures such as cataracts surgery and LASIK are some of the most effective and permanent solutions. However, before deciding to receive these treatments, it is important to consult with a leading eye surgeon in your area (such as a New York LASIK specialist) to receive in-depth analysis as to whether you are a good candidate for such procedures.

Your Questions About Shingles

Linda asks…

What are shingles coupled with Lupus, and is shingles contagious?

I have been diagnose with Lupus and just found out today that I have shingle (with the red spots on my leg inside and out, and very, very, painful) Is there any chance these two are compatible with each other?

admin answers:

Shingles is the reactivation of the chicken pox you had probably as a child. It lies dormant in your system and then one day,BAM, reactivates. Shingles is incredibly uncomfortable from what I understand and you have my sympathies!
Since it is a reactivation of the Herpes Zoster virus, then yes, you are contagious to people (just like a child with chicken pox) until after the scabs have formed on your last blisters. The people who are most at risk around you are infants and the elderly or the immunocomprimised(weakened immune systems) and anyone who has not had chicken pox or the vaccine. Go here for more information:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herpes_zoster

Just like a celiac (which I am), your immune system is going to be a little bit different and you are going to be slightly more susceptible to certain infections. I am assuming you have not been on any prednisone treatment (due to just being diagnosed), so I will leave that bit out.
Here is a really good link to a forum that I think you will find very helpful, and includes a discussion about lupus and shingles.

If you have not had the rash for too long, it is not too late to get on some anti-virals that could shorten the length of the course of the shingles. I wish you a speedy recovery and the best!

Donald asks…

Is shingles contagious to someone who has had the chicken pox vaccine?

If so, would direct contact with some one’s outbreak be necessary for the virus to spread?

admin answers:

Read this for a full but simple explanation:

http://hubpages.com/hub/ShinglesContagious

I would like to add…Shingles itself is not a contagious disease (meaning you cannot get shingles from someone who has shingles.) However, direct contact with a person who has the rash (before it has crusted over) can cause chickenpox in someone who has never had chicken pox or the vaccine. So in this respect, the virus IS still contagious.

Steven asks…

How long before someone is diagnosed with Shingles are they contagious?

Ok I’ve looked here and on the net but no one seems to know what the incubation stage is on Shingles. Someone I know was diagnosed today with Shingles and the doctor didn’t say how long she was contagious….I worry about my mother in law because she was with this person last week and the MIL is not in a healthy state as it is. Thank you in advance!

admin answers:

Shingles is not contagious. A person with Shingles can pass the virus to individuals who have never had Chicken Pox,but these individuals will develope chicken pox, not Shingles. Shingles occurs, only when the virus that caused Chicken Pox,which has stayed in the body for many years becomes active again. If your MIL had Chicken Pox when she was young, then you need not to worry.

Ken asks…

how long is shingles contagious?

a lady at my new job had shingles last week. She is supposed to train me on Tues. Is she still contagious? I need to know for sure, because we share phones and stuff behind a desk. I’ve had chicken pox when i was a kid, but still. Also my 5 year old hasn’t had chicken pox and i don’t want to bring something home to her. So after a week of her getting shingles, is she contagious?

admin answers:

Herpes zoster (or simply zoster), commonly known as shingles, is a viral disease characterised by a painful skin rash with blisters in a limited area on one side of the body, often in a stripe. The initial infection with varicella zoster virus (VZV) causes the acute (short-lived) illness chickenpox, and generally occurs in children and young people. Once an episode of chickenpox has resolved, the virus is not eliminated from the body but can go on to cause shingles—an illness with very different symptoms—often many years after the initial infection.

The rash and pain usually subside within 3 to 5 weeks. Many patients develop a painful condition called postherpetic neuralgia, which is often difficult to manage. In some patients, herpes zoster can reactivate subclinically, with pain in a dermatomal distribution without rash.

Shingles cannot be passed from one person to another. However, the virus that causes shingles, VZV, can be spread from a person with active shingles to a person who has no immunity to the virus by direct contact with the rash, while in the blister phase. The person exposed would then develop chicken pox, not shingles. The virus is not spread through airborne transmission, such as sneezing or coughing. Once the rash has developed crusts, the person is no longer contagious. A person is not infectious before blisters appear or with post-herpetic neuralgia (pain after the rash is gone).-

Nancy asks…

Is shingles contagious to others that have already had chicken pox?

Since the virus is laying dormant in your body, if someone comes in contact with you, can that awaken it in their body?

admin answers:

No.

Shingles cannot be passed from one person to another. However, the virus that causes shingles, VZV, can be spread from a person with active shingles to a person who has never had chickenpox through direct contact with the rash. The person exposed would then develop chickenpox, not shingles. The virus is not spread through sneezing, coughing or casual contact. A person with shingles can spread the disease when the rash is in the blister-phase. Once the rash has developed crusts, the person is no longer contagious. A person is not infectious before blisters appear or with post-herpetic neuralgia (pain after the rash is gone).

That said, you can’t actually spread “shingles” per se… Only chickenpox. And if you’ve had chicken pox, you are already immune to it. So the answer is no.

Physician Thursday – Patient Empowerment

Physician Thursday – Patient Empowerment

Article by NaviNet Inc

It’s a tough world to be a patient in today. With family premiums on the rise, looming doctor shortages (especially in primary care), and no easy way to access personal medical records, seeking medical services can be more stressful than healing. Despite these challenges, several studies suggest that most individuals are far from giving up. After all, with education comes empowerment. Are you seeing your patients taking a more active role in their care management? Here are some of the exciting movements we’ve noticed in the space. If you haven’t seen it yet, you can bet it’s coming shortly.

· Boston-based PatientsLikeMe recently opened its (virtual) doors to all patients. Originally a community for individuals suffering from ALS to share their experiences, creating a vast database of patient-entered data, PatientsLikeMe is now encouraging people with any condition to join the discussion. This platform allows patients to learn and seek support from others with similar medical situations about potential treatments. The site hosts over 101,830 patients coping with over 500 conditions. And as you might guess–they’re still growing.

· An article from The Health Care Blog suggested future patients may begin rejecting CT scans as more reports indicate the levels of radiation emitted are cancer-causing.

· As we said before, knowledge is power. Especially when it comes to accessing information about your healthcare provider online. Soon, patients will have this ability through Physicians Compare, a CMS initiative. In 2013, CMS will add physicians’ quality performance data, based on the prior reporting year. But physicians aren’t crazy about it, especially since they are reporting biographical data errors on the site.

· According to Pew Research, patient empowerment is growing. Their recent report found that 80% of Americans research diseases, procedures, doctors, hospitals, drugs, test results and insurance on the Internet.

· In a survey of 1,111 people conducted by Makovsky & Company and Kelton Research focused on their online health news sources; 48% of respondents said they use WebMD. What are patients searching on WebMD? The Pew Survey tells us the top five conditions searched for on WebMD are shingles, gallbladder, gout, hemorrhoids and lupus.

· Research Corp.’s Ticker survey learned 20% of patients use social media as a source of health information online.

· But if you think your patients aren’t engaged enough, the Institute for Technology Transformation would like to share this report of “Ten things you need to know about engaging patients.”

As you can see, through social channels, internet health resources and mobile health apps, there are plenty of opportunities for patients to take initiative in their care plan. Let us know which tools and trends you find most promising.
