What is Chickenpox?

What is Chickenpox?

Chickenpox is an infectious disease caused by the varicella virus. Most cases occur in children under age 15 but older children and adults can get it. It spreads very easily from one child to another.

Symptoms include an uncomfortable, itchy rash, fever and headache. The rash is like blisters and usually appears on the face, scalp or trunk. The disease is usually mild and lasts 5 to 10 days, but it sometimes causes serious problems. Adults and older children tend to get sicker from it. Do not give aspirin to anyone sick with chickenpox since the combination might cause Reye Syndrome.

How do people get chickenpox?

Chickenpox spreads from person to person by direct contact with fluid from broken chickenpox blisters or through the air by coughing or sneezing. Chickenpox is so contagious in its early stages that an exposed person who has not had chickenpox has a 70% to 80% chance of getting the disease.

After infection, the virus stays in the body for life. Although people cannot get chickenpox twice, the same virus causes shingles. A person with shingles can spread the virus to an adult or child who has not had chickenpox, and that person can develop chickenpox.

Symptoms

Symptoms of chickenpox begin between 10 and 21 days after a person is exposed. The illness typically includes fever and a generally sick feeling. This is soon followed by itchy, red bumps that quickly become fluid-filled and are easily recognized as chickenpox. These skin blisters are round, about 5 millimeters to 10 millimeters across (about the size of a pencil eraser), with a red base. Sometimes, they are described as a “dew drop on a rose petal.” They appear in various stages over the next few days and eventually crust over. These blisters may appear anywhere there is skin, even inside the mouth, throat or vagina. Some patients have only 50 blisters or fewer. Others have too many to count.

What is the treatment?

For some children, the rash may be no more than a passing inconvenience, but for others, it can be very unpleasant. Treatment is, therefore, aimed at controlling the symptoms.

Asking your child not to scratch their itch will probably fall on deaf ears, however, it is worth trying to distract them as best you can. Cut their fingernails very short and make sure that their hands and fingernails are kept clean.

If the rash or sores are very itchy, bathe the child in a warm (but not too hot) bath with half a cup of baking soda in it. Your pharmacist or doctor will also be able to recommend some anti-itch preparations if your child is very distressed. Calamine lotion can be useful as well.

Vaccination

Chickenpox (varicella) vaccination is not included in the childhood immunisation programme in New Zealand as the Ministry of Health does not recommend the routine use of this vaccine for normal, healthy children. However, the vaccine is available and licensed for use in New Zealand, but it is not subsidised, so the patient or parent must pay for it. The vaccine can be given to children over about one year of age and adults. Children aged under 13 years require one dose, whereas anyone over 13 years requires a second booster shot about six weeks later.

Treatment With Herbs

Treatment With Herbs

The sensations are often described as a deep pain, burning, “pins and needles” sensation, numbness, itching and extreme sensitivity of the skin to touch. At the start of the shingles infection, some people may experience symptoms similar to those of flu such as fever or muscle aches.

Although it is caused by chickenpox virus, the rash is different from chickenpox rash. Chickenpox affects most areas of the body, while shingles rash affects a specific area of the skin, usually occurring as a band on one side of the body. The rash usually forms on the chest, back and face.

These antiviral drugs include famciclovir, acyclovir and valacyclovir. They must be used immediately, preferably within 72 hours after symptoms start to appear, in order to control the infection.

Your doctor will conduct a physical exam and ask questions about your symptoms. He may also obtain tissue scrapings of the rash for laboratory testing. Getting immediate treatment will lower the risk of developing complications.

The blisters trace a band across the skin following the path of the affected nerve. Unlike chickenpox, the rash is confined to one side of the body. Shingles rash can appear across the chest, stomach, neck, or down one leg. The outbreak usually lasts three to four weeks.

Well guys these are my mom’s favorite four. She used them on my brothers and I and they really did work. Never overdo the amounts I have recommended and if you are on medication, talk to your doctor before using any of them. And of course should you get any complication consult your doctor immediately. And as always you must eat well to be well.

Some of these products can range anywhere from dollars to dollars. If you are like most people and do not have this kind of money to spend then it is suggested that you start of with cheap inexpensive products that you might already have at home.

A study finds that a diet that is more in vegetables and fruits together with low-fat dairy helps lessen your risk of developing kidney stones. The study also shows that calcum, a major component of stones, can be prevented by calcium-rich diet.

This is recommended by doctors, if you are a smoker or were one or if you have lung irritants for a prolonged duration. Through this test you doctor would be able to measure and determine the functioning of your lungs. The other name for this test is called Lung Function or Pulmonary Function tests.

These walkers, wheelchairs, scooter etc can be stored in your car’s trunk, since they don’t weigh much and they can be availed anytime.

The term “end stage” is different for different people and is looked at with different perspectives. For instance a person who is a respiratory therapist working with all kinds of COPD patients in pulmonary rehabilitation would surely have a different angle to this in comparison to a doctor who just sees patients when they are sick.

Stll in alot of pain. Can I apply Triamcinole Cream which is a cream to relieve rashes? My main e-mail address is jbass1214@comcast.net.

Donald asks…

I was diagnosed with shingles around 24 hours after the apperaacne of the first blister. I started medication?

I was diagnosed with shingles around 24 hours after the apperaacne of the first blister. I started medication
right after I was given the prescriptions.

I am on prednisone, valtrex, a pain medciation, and some cream. Do you htink these will stop more blisters from forming as well as making the shingles go away or will it still spread?

admin answers:

The Valtrex alone will prevent new blisters from forming, as it is an anti-retroviral medicine. The Prednisone will reduce inflammation.

Helen asks…

Shingles medication + Alcohol?

My dad got shingles in June of this year, but it got to advanced shingles, so he is taking the following medications:

Gabapentin
Hydrocodine/acetaminophen (online, it seems that hydrocodone is a more common name, not sure if it is the same thing?)

He takes the medicine frequently, at least 2-3 times a day, which is the prescribed dosage (depending on pain). However, he also takes the medication with alcohol on a regular basis (usually white wine). The shingles can last a long time, but I am wondering if alcohol in combination with the medications can delay the process of getting better, or if it there are any SPECIFIC dangers or consequences that make the medication less effective. My dad still seems to be experiencing a fair amount of pain, and I wonder if the medication doesn’t work as well because of the alcohol. I’ve said this and so has my mom, but he says that it’s fine and that the alcohol isn’t bad. He has not actually mentioned to his doctor that he takes the medication with alcohol, and he seems to be a little stubborn to do so. Does anyone with any medical background have knowledge about this situation? It would really be appreciated.

admin answers:

Alcohol and acetaminophen taken together can cause liver damage. Being that your dad takes his med frequently, he shouldnt drink every day…or even very often for that matter. Im not sure if it can cause a delay in healing, but med and booze dont have any good effects for sure. Maybe he feels so sick that the alcohol makes him feel better.

Michael asks…

Should I discontinue breastfeeding to treat shingles?

I gave birth a week ago and developed shingles on my back shortly afterward. The area is small (maybe 3″x2″), I am not in much pain at all and the doctor at urgent care advised me to continue breastfeeding and stay off the antivirals if I am handling it OK. However, my sister had shingles a few years ago and dealt with postherpetic neuralgia for 2 years as a result. She is advising me to to take the antivirals to avoid any further pain/medication. Should I just allow the disease to heal and continue to breastfeed (which I really want to do), or should I take antivirals and pump to keep my milk flowing until the drugs are out of my system to help prevent any complications? I am afraid if I don’t take anything and I develop this complication that I will have to take other medications and then refrain from breastfeeding while dealing with nerve pain. What is the likelihood of developing postherpetic neuralgia? I am 23 years old and in relatively good health.
When I say pump to keep milk flowing, I mean that I won’t be giving the milk to the baby, just keeping things going for when the milk is safe again. But I think I won’t be taking the antivirals.

admin answers:

If it isn’t giving you much pain now, it is unlikely to cause post herpetic neuralgia. That happens when there is a lot of pain from the beginning. I’d just watch it and keep nursing.

Donna asks…

Shingles Pain getting worse (please help)?

My step mother has had shingles for the past month. The rash went away after she got medication for her Doctor after a few days but the pain has only gotten worse.. She got the strongest pain pills possible and it hasn’t even phased the pain. The pain isn’t like it should be for shingles, its more like a pain on the bone. The pain is so severe that it feels like she even broke her bone. Her entire hip is throbbing. She took xrays but the doctor hasn’t gotten back to her and she has been fighting the urge to go to the hospital because the pain is so bad. Do you think the pain is caused by something other than shingles? 10 points for the quickest best answer.

admin answers:

Sounds like she has nerve damage caused by the virus that causes shingles. She might want to consult a pain specialist.

Help To Alleviate The Fatigue From Chronic Fatigue

Most older people experience at some point, some degree of fatigue. But most problems with fatigue are not physical weakness, but are related to lack of exercise, depression, unhappiness, worry or boredom. real weakness, as the inability to move an arm or leg, is a physical problem, which includes the nerves, brain or muscles, and needs immediate medical attention. Fatigue or tiredness is much more common than true weakness.

Learning to treat fatigue after a bad attack of shingles can be the key to enter all round better health. You see, if you’re still tired after his attack of shingles, which means that the problem was not healed properly, first.

The kidneys and sweat glands conserve potassium so well that they do not lose much. If an athlete is developing potassium deficiency, is usually caused by drugs such as diuretics or corticosteroids, or diarrhea or repeated vomiting. Some athletes try to control their weight so you throw up. This is known as bulimia, and vomiting will usually denied. Your doctors can prove they are vomiting, ordering blood and urine. If blood potassium levels are low and urine levels are high, vomiting is a likely cause. Ask your child’s physician to make a cause to work for other chronic fatigue. If you can not find that overtraining can and should talk to your coach about how to change your workouts.

Coffee is a terrible habit that many people enjoy way too often. I associate the consumption of coffee at the same level as cigarette smoking. It is counterproductive to a healthy life style and certainly does not help you in your quest for more energy. The rationale, caffeine causes your body to the overproduction of adrenaline and, essentially, overworked neurons in the brain. This essentially wears and brings you to the point of exhaustion. The elimination of coffee from your daily routine is a necessity in the search for cures for fatigue.

Because patients with chronic fatigue syndrome have lower blood volume, experienced a rapid rate of hypotension and heart as your body compensates. To address this, some measures are carried out. Previously, only midodrine vasopressors as prescribed to increase blood pressure. Today, methylphenidate, epoetin alfa and tyrosine may be prescribed with vasopressors. Tyrosine is an amino acid that is found to have an effect on the volume of circulating blood. Methylphenidate is a drug of choice for ADHD, but also used to increase blood pressure. Epoetin alfa is injected to stimulate the growth of red blood cells which increases blood volume and blood pressure. Sometimes, beta-blockers are used to increase blood pressure, but is more common as an antihypertensive. Patients are also advised to increase their intake of salt and water if you have low blood pressure so that water can be retained in the body, therefore blood volume increases.

Treat herpes – Use Famvir

Article by Ian Caspar

Famvir is an antiviral medication, which slows down the growth and reduces the severity of herpes virus. While this medication is very effective in treating the herpes virus infection by reducing the severity of the symptoms, it does not cure it. The same virus also causes various other health conditions such as chickenpox, genital herpes, cold sores and shingles. Take this medication for the entire course as prescribed by your doctor. Sometimes, your symptoms may get better even prior to completion of the whole course, even then don’t stop using the drug. For best results, you should start taking this medication within the first few hours of the outbreak.

People with an infection can pass it on to other people. Even if you are using Valtrex, you can infect other people. Stay at a safe distance from everyone if you are infected. Touching an infected area can be worse. Wash your hands frequently so that you do not pass this infection to other people.

When you should not take it?

You should not take this medication if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. If you are suffering from any kind of kidney disease, galactose intolerance or glucose malabsorption, you should tell your doctor about it. This will help your doctor to prescribe a proper dose to you.

A woman who is breastfeeding should also avoid it as this drug may pass into breast milk. Never take this medication without consulting a doctor, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding and do not give this medication to children who are younger than 18 years of age.

Dosage

The dose of this drug depends on the severity of the symptoms and the health of the patient. You may be prescribed Famvir 125mg, which is a white coloured film-coated tablet. Never take this tablet on your own. Always consult a doctor before doing so.

Take it with a glass of water, before or after food. Taking this drug will also help you decrease stomach upset. Do not stop taking it till the infection is completely treated. Do not take this medication is larger amounts. If you miss a dose, you should carry on with the new dose. Never double dose to catch up with the cycle. It does not treat common cold or flu. Store it at room temperature and keep it away from children and animals.

Infections caused by herpes virus are contagious and you should avoid touching other people who are infected with the virus. You can get infected if you touch an infected person, especially the infected area. Do not touch the infected area and if you do so by chance, wash your hands thoroughly. Famvir helps in treatment of genital herpes, and not in preventing their spread. Avoid sexual intercourse and if at all you wish to do it, use a latex condom of good quality so that the infection is not spread to the other person.

Medications and Treatments for Anxiety

Medications and Treatments for Anxiety

Article by Tim Brunson PhD

When excessive worry interferes with your ability to function, then you medical doctors or psychologists may determine that you are suffering from an anxiety. If you do not respond to psychotherapy or counseling, medical doctors may prescript one of several medications. I’ve researched these meds and wish to share with you what I found out.

GABAPENTIN (brand names: Neurontin, Gabarone)

Although specifically approved only for use in the treatment of epilepsy and post-herpetic neuralgia (pain following shingles), Neurontin is widely used to treat anxiety disorders. However, although Neurontin is frequently prescribed by mental health professionals, numerous trials show that it has limited usefulness in the treatment of anxiety disorders. Gabapentin has also proven to cause weight gain, which can increase patient’s anxiety levels.

Side-effects of Neurontin based on results of clinical trials: 1 in 4 people experience dizziness, 1 in 5 experienced drowsiness. 1 in 10 people experienced infections, coordination problems, and fever. 1 in 13 experienced nausea, swelling or fluid retention in their legs, feet, arms or hands, vomiting, and unusual eye movements. Other common side effects, occurring in 1%-7% of people included: tremors, double vision, weakness, diarrhea or constipation, weight gain, changes in thinking, bronchitis, memory loss, speech problems, hot flashes and high blood sugar.

ALPRAZOLAM (brand names: Xanax)

Xanax is a short-acting drug of the benzodiazepine class. It is used to treat anxiety disorders and panic disorder. It works by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain. It is quite lipophilic, meaning that it quickly gets into the brain so can give immediate feelings of ease. This can be particularly useful for those who experience rare, but unexpected incidents of extreme fear or panic attacks.

However, the quicker a drug works, the more addicting it can be. If you take a pill, and it makes you feel better almost immediately, but then wears off in about 6 hours, you are starting to train your brain to be dependent on the drug. In fact, your brain makes its own natural Xanax-like substance, called GABA. This substance inhibits your brain’s natural tendency to speed up and obsess. Once you start taking one of the alprazolam type medications, your brain’s natural ability to manufacture GABA will cease to work after about a week. Once you quit taking the medication, it will take about 7 days for your brain to resume creating this natural substance. During that time you may experience severe withdrawal symptoms. In addition to the very real danger of addiction, side effects of Xanax based on clinical trials include:

76.8 percent of people experience drowsiness. 1 in 2 people experience fatigue, 1 in 3 people experience coordination problems, irritability, memory problems and increased appetite (leading to weight gain). In addition there are many more side effects that include: confusion, sexual problems, speech problems, difficulty urinating, menstrual problems, and constipation.

ESCITALOPRAM (brand names: Lexapro, Cipralex, Seroplex, Lexamil, Lexam)

Lexapro has been approved by FDA for the treatment in adults with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Lexapro is not a fast-acting drug. It normally takes 4-6 weeks before any significant alleviation of symptoms can be noticed. This drug works by balancing a naturally occurring chemical in your brain (serotonin). Serotonin is one of several chemicals used to send messages from one nerve cell to another – the more serotonin in the space between your nerve cells, the better. This drug works by blocking the reuptake of serotonin – hence its classification of drug: Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI).

Based on the results of clinical studies, you have a 1 in 4 chance that you’ll experience headaches, a one in 6 chance you’ll be nauseous, 1 in 7 chance you’ll have ejaculation problems, a 1 in 8 chance you’ll experience either extreme tiredness or insomnia (or both). In addition, 5-8% of trial subjects experienced dry mouth, increased sweating, diarrhea, decreased sex drive and orgasm problems, constipation and dizziness.

FLUOXETINE (brand names: Prozac, Sarafem)Prozac is another drug of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class: The most common use is Prozac for anxiety. Using Prozac for anxiety will help relieve certain forms of anxiety, including obsessive compulsive disorder and panic attacks. The most common use of Prozac however, is for depression. but Prozac for anxiety works by evening out the natural occurrence of chemicals that contribute to a general feeling of well-being or happiness. Like Lexapro, Prozac will take 6-8 weeks to take effect. Conversely, when you are ready to discontinue the drug, you must slowly scale back your dosage as you can experience withdrawal problems.

In clinical studies, the most common side effects of Prozac included: 1 in 3 people experience insomnia, 1 in 4 experience nausea, 1 in 5 people experience weakness and headaches, 1 in 6 people experience diarrhea, loss of appetite, drowsiness, increased anxiety and nervousness. Other symptoms experienced are: shakiness, dry mouth, decreased sex drive, yawning, indigestion, dizziness, sweating, impotence, and ejaculation problems

LORAZEPAM (brand names: Ativan, Temesta)

Ativan is part of a group of medicines called benzodiazepines. These medications work by enhancing the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a brain chemical that is naturally calming. GABA can slow down or stop certain nerve signals in the brain. As a result, Ativan has several effects on the body, including: Reducing anxiety, relaxing muscles, stopping seizures. You can take benzodiazepines as a single dose therapy or several times a day for monthsSide effects of Ativan: In general, there is some risk of physical and psychological dependence when taking Ativan. If you suddenly stop taking Ativan, you may experience withdrawal symptoms. Be sure to follow your doctor’s directions for discontinuing this medication or changing your dose. In these studies, the most common side effects of Ativan included: 1 in 6 experienced a feeling of sedation, 1 in 12 experienced dizziness. Other side effects include: weakness, unsteadiness, memory loss, confusion, disorientation, vertigo, headaches, nausea, constipation, sex drive changes, impotence and orgasm problems, hair loss, depression, suicide thoughts, increased anxiety, rage, insomnia, and hallucinations.

NON-PHARMACEUTICAL OPTIONS:

Whether you suffer from a specific anxiety due to a fear or worry about something in particular or just find that you will respond quite well to some form of psychotherapy – to include hypnotherapy. In fact, many health professionals will often recommend that you go this route first and avoid the related side effects of the medications, which I just described. However, listen to your medical doctor or psychologists before making a decision.
