Douglass Colony Group and Homes for Troops Complete Gold LEED Certified Home For War Injured Veteran

Article by Christy Maraone

Douglass Colony Group in conjunction with Platinum Homes and Homes for our Troops, completed an incredible, fully handicap-accessible, Gold LEED certified home for war-injured veteran, SGT Tim “TJ” Johannsen. The Build Brigade weekend (December 10-12, 2010) included rough framing, truss installation, roof sheeting, and dry-in for a 4,600 sq.ft. ranch-style home. This home will serve as a new beginning for SGT Johannsen, his wife Jackie, and their 1-month old baby, Oliver.

Army SGT Tim Johannsen’s story is quite extraordinary. On his second deployment to Iraq in June 2007, SGT Johannsen was left a double amputee after an IED exploded through the floorboard of his HMMWV. SGT Johannsen suffered immediate amputation of both legs- his right leg below the knee and his left leg above the knee. Immediate reaction by the medic and medevac team saved SGT Johannsen’s life. Once stabilized, he was airlifted to Landstuhl, Germany and later transported to Walter Reed Army Medical Center where he remained for 2 ½ years.

Homes for our Troops is a national non-profit organization that provides homes at no cost to the Veterans that have selflessly given to our country and have returned home with serious disabilities and injuries since September 11, 2001. All building materials and professional labor hours are donated for free. Douglass Colony Group donated labor hours and some materials/equipment at no cost. Douglass Colony installed the shingle roof and a 2kW roof mount crystalline solar system that will offset approximately 40-50% of the homes electricity usage.

Douglass Colony Group is a firm supporter of the Homes for our Troops projects. All soldiers that serve in warring nations are to be commended and truly appreciated for their heroic efforts and helping to preserve our nation’s freedom. SGT Tim Johannsen is a true hero and this is just one small way we can show him gratitude for all that he has given to our country. We’d like to say a big “Thank You” to all who participated in the home build this past month. Your contributions help to make dreams come true for our nation’s heroes.

Your Questions About Shingles

John asks…

What causes Herpes Zoster viruses and are they deadly ? How can one eliminate them for good ?

A family member suffered from herpe zosters for the first time in 1993. They resurfaced in December 2004. He is currently having them this being the third time.

admin answers:

Herpes zoster is caused by a varicella zoster, the same virus that causes chickenpox, and the reinfection in an adult is often known as shingles. When you get chickenpox as a child, the virus often migrates to the root ganglion of certain nerve cells and remains dormant, sometimes throughout your life. About 20% of all adults will get an outbreak of shingles later in life, usually with advancing age. Some causes for the reoccurrance are immunosuppression (either as a result of age, stress, depression, or other disease) or chemotherapy. It is usually not deadly if treated promptly and properly, and with the newer anti-viral medications available on the market, only lasts a little while. It is exceedingly difficult to eliminate it for good, since it just goes dormant again rather than dying out completely.

Richard asks…

When is it secure for someone with herpes zoster be in contact with others?

My aunt has it and she is wondering when can she go back to work ’cause she works at a school and she is scared the kids might get it.

admin answers:

The only thing she can give to kids is chicken pox.
Not shingeles ( herpes zoster) and it is rare that the kids will get it.
Most have had vaccines any way for chicken pox.
There are millions of people walking around with it .
And I know people in teaching who go around kids with it and it has never caused any problems or contacts.

You can spread the infected area on your self though so if she has it near her face, she needs to be very careful.
Also satying out of the sun helps while it is active.

Therei stons of info online about it too.

She only really should be careful around infants ( like not holding them) or an adult who has never had chicken pox and has a weakened immune system

Carol asks…

Are there any know cases of one person getting herpes zoster from another?

I am aware that the virus that causes chicken pox is from the same family and is contagious.

admin answers:

“Herpes zoster” generally refers to shingles, the reactivation of the varicella zoster virus which causes chickenpox. A person must first have chickenpox at one point before being able to have shingles, as the virus remains latent in the ganglia of nerve cells until later in life when it flares up again, for whatever reason, be it stress, immunodeficiency, or what have you. I do not believe it to be contagious in the herpes zoster form as the actual virus is deep within the nerves.

Robert asks…

what kind of food is recommended for patients suffering from herpes zoster?

the patient has got blister’s on the left hand and is suffering from pain. The doctor’s prescribed medicine is given to the patient.

admin answers:

Avoid foods rich in arginine – Arginine is required for the herpes virus to replicate. As such, eating foods high in arginine, especially peanuts, chocolate and almonds, is associated with more frequent herpes outbreaks. The same holds true for dietary supplements containing arginine. These often include oral growth-hormone secretagogues and supplements designed to correct erectile dysfunction or enhance sexual potency.

Consume foods rich in the amino acid lysine – Studies indicate that herpes viruses extract lysine from the bloodstream, thinking it is arginine, as both have very similar chemical structures. Once inside, the virus attempts to use lysine to make protein VII (an arginine-rich protein that is at the viral core), but the attempt Ms. Thus, the virus is unable to replicate. As such, lysine acts like an arginine substitute, which fools the virus and prevents it from replicating and causing outbreaks. Foods that contain high levels of lysine include most vegetables, legumes, fish, turkey and chicken.

Avoid alcohol – Alcohol weakens the immune system and is a known trigger for herpes outbreaks.

Reduce intake of refined sugars and aspartame – Anecdotal reports suggest consuming refined sugar increases the frequency of herpes outbreaks. Other reports suggest the same holds true for aspartame-sweetened soft drinks.

Vegan diet-Some individuals report success controlling herpes outbreaks by avoiding the consumption of all animalbased foods. Overall, it certainly makes sense to eat a largely plant-based diet and only eat fish, chicken, turkey and low-fat plain yogurt, if animal foods are to be consumed at all.

Consume broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables daily – Broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower and bok choy contain an active ingredient known as the indole-3-carbinol, which has been shown to inhibit replication of herpes viruses. Individuals consuming these foods daily and supplementing with indole-3-carbinol have reported decreased frequency of herpes outbreaks.

Lisa asks…

Can you get herpes zoster on your genetials?

Someone told me this was the kind of genetial herpes they had but i looked it up and it came up as shingles. So can it affect you genetials? And does it reoccure?

admin answers:

Once you have the virus it is with you for life. It can break out when your immune system is low.

Olive Leaf Extract is Nature`s Natural Antibiotic

Olive Leaf Extract is Nature`s Natural Antibiotic

Article by Emily Rae

Olive leaf extract is rapidly becoming recognized as nature`s natural antibiotic. Extensive research has determined that a compound within this extract, known as oleuropein contains amazing healing properties that fight bacteria, diseases, viruses, parasites and fungal infections.

This ancient tree has been on earth since the beginning of time and is mentioned in Genesis, the first book of the bible. Both the fruit of the olive tree and the leaves have provided many uses since that time as a food, for beauty, health and healing. This article will focus on the olive leaf extract and how it can do wonders for your health.

It has been discovered that the compound oleuropein, that is contained within this extract, inactivates bacteria by dissolving the outer layer of the microbe that is causing the disease. In 1992 French biologists discovered it to be very effective in inhibiting or killing the herpes virus.

Due to the fact that antibiotics are ineffective in combating viral infections such as colds and flu and there are increasing numbers of antibiotic resistant microorganisms around the world, this knowledge may be of extreme importance to you. This old fashioned remedy could become a modern day boon as it is quickly becoming known as a natural anti-infectious disease remedy.

Success using olive leaf extract has also been found in those with HIV and the AIDS virus, Epstein-Barr virus, malaria, dengue fever, shingles, surgical infections, hepatitis and many other infections. This substance also contains high antioxidant qualities which are good for the heart and circulation, chronic fatigue and as an energy booster.

Now that you have this information to ponder on, you may not realize that not all natural products are of equal quality, so do your research first. For starters, make sure you are purchasing a standardized product so that you are getting the right concentrated amount and the processing standards are high.

You could also do as I do and purchase olive leaf extract in a scientifically formulated multi blend supplement that is of extremely high quality. Within that supplement there are several other natural standardized herbs, vitamins, minerals and immune system enhancing nutrients to provide you with ultimate health and total balance.

If you are faced with any health challenges or you want to maintain good preventive health you need to click on the link to learn more about this cutting edge supplement. You will then understand why this is the only company that I recommend and purchase from.

I hope this article titled olive leaf extract is nature`s natural antibiotic has been useful to you.

An Introduction To The Herpes Viruses

An Introduction To The Herpes Viruses

Article by bcured

The word herpes evokes an emotional response from almost everyone. Eighty percent of the world’s population has serological evidence of the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1, generally orolabial herpes), while 20 to 30 percent of the U.S. population is seropositive for the herpes virus type 2 (HSV-2, generally genital herpes).Add chickenpox, shingles, the immunosuppressant drugs used by cancer and organ-transplant patients, along with the increasing number of immunosuppressed patients who have HIV and AIDS, and it’s not hard to understand why we are now seeing a greater incidence of herpes infections.HSV1 and HSV2-the culprits of oral and genital herpesOral HerpesOral herpes affects areas of the mouth and face. Herpes type 1 (HSV1) is the most common cause of oral herpes. However herpes type 2 (HSV2) can also cause oral herpes infections. In other words, either HSV1 or HSV2 may be responsible for oral herpes.Recurring symptoms or outbreaks may develop as soon as 5 to 10 days after the initial infection. Symptoms include painful blisters around the mouth, often accompanied by a cold or fever, hence the term “cold” sores or “fever” blisters. Immunity plays a key role in outbreaks. When the system is stressed or the immune system is weakened, the virus travels down the ganglia and resurfaces on the skin, causing an outbreak.Genital HerpesFor reasons unknown, HSV2 seems to gravitate towards the genital tract and is therefore the most common cause of genital herpes. However, HSV1 can also manifest in the genital region and cause genital herpes. So, once again, either HSV1 or HSV2 can cause genital herpes. When the virus erupts on the surface of the skin, causing an outbreak, typical symptoms are inflamed blisters or ulcers. As the infection is caused by the either HSV1 or HSV2, lesions resemble cold sores. The first outbreak commonly reveals its aggravating presence 4 to 7 days after the initial infection of HSV.In females, outbreaks occur on or near the vulva, labia, clitoris, pubis, or anus. In males, herpes lesions can appear anywhere on the penis, scrotum, or around the anus. Outbreaks are commonly accompanied by pain, itching, or burning. Some experience enlarged lymph nodes, muscle pain, and fatigue. Some experience prodrome before an outbreak. This is a tingling, itching, or painful sensation experienced prior to an outbreak. Prodrome symptoms may be experienced for several days or for a few hours. Use of an antiviral treatment (oral or topical) during prodrome is known to reduce the duration of an outbreak, and it may even abort the outbreak for some individuals.Unfortunately, there is no known “cure” for herpes. Use of a condom is recognized to be the most reliable method to prevent transmission of the virus. However, effective treatments are available which can reduce the frequency and severity of outbreaks, stop viral reproduction, and reduce viral load, all of which greatly mitigate outbreaks and allow sufferers to control the condition.Depending on what study you wish to believe, well over 90% of the US population will test positive for having either HSV1 or HSV2.Acyclovir is the most popular drug prescribed for herpes. However, the emergence of aciclovir-resistant virus strains has created the need for the development of new effective antiviral agents.New anti-herpetic chemical drug compounds have been identified, but they have significant adverse effects when consumed and HSV has again developed drug resistance to these new compounds. As new chemical drug options are not viable, alternative antiviral options are being investigated with great interest. Recent scientific studies of medicinal antiviral plant extracts show very encouraging results, and have sparked a new methodology for treating herpes.Studies of these antiviral extracts demonstrate that many of these compounds exhibit significant anti-herpetic activity. Several actually inactivate HSV with great effectiveness. These antiviral extracts represent new effective treatment options for therapeutic use as virucidal agents for recurring herpes infections.Enter CURED herpes treatment-HSVCurativeHSVCurative is a potent all natural antiviral agent highly effective against HSV1 and HSV2, it has a wide spectrum of antiviral activity against these viruses. The antiviral extracts in this treatment have the ability to inactivate and destroy HSV, which has been established in published clinical trials. It is to be applied directly to an outbreak.HSVCurative is used specifically to treat HSV1 and HSV2 infections and acts as a curative agent against both these strains of herpes. It exhibits a pronounced anti-herpetic activity against HSV1 and HSV2 and actually kills these viruses upon exposure regardless of location on the body.HSVCurative is formulated at maximum strength and has produced spectacular results in eliminating herpes outbreaks in almost all known cases. It is possibly the most powerful and effective topical herpes treatment on the market, providing total clearance of outbreaks time after time. Results are Guaranteed.Topical application causes herpes outbreaks to dissolve and dry out, with total clearance commonly experienced in 24 to 36 hours. Immediate results and pain relief are certainly experienced with every application.HSVCurative is therefore proving to be unrivaled in the treatment of genital and oral herpes. It is simply the best in its class.HSVCurative contains certified organic medicinal plant extracts and antiviral essential oils which cause cellular death to HSV1 and HSV2 in scientific studies. HSVCurative has a rather remarkable array of pharmacological and biochemical properties which inactivate and destroy the herpes virus. The importance of applying certified organic material to outbreaks or open sores cannot be overstated. This is because one is applying a topical remedy directly to exposed porous tissue, or open lesions. Treatments applied to lesions or open sores are quickly absorbed into the circulatory system in significant quantities; hence use of organic material is absolutely essential. HSVCurative is certified organic and is meant for medicinal use. For more details about our herpes treatment, refer to our website of http://www.bcured.net.

Chickenpox Diagnosis And Treatment

Chickenpox Diagnosis And Treatment

Article by Patricia Davis

One of the classic children’s diseases is chickenpox, which is easily transmitted between children. Chickenpox can be transmitted by direct contact as well as by airborne transmission. Rare but serious complications can be caused by the disease, requiring immediate medical attention. The most effective method for avoiding chickenpox is by immunization against the disease. The most common symptoms of chickenpox are fever, headache, stomach ache, and loss of appetite, followed by an itchy rash of blisters, normally lasting for 2 to 4 days. The virus culprit of chicken pox is the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). It is the same as the human herpes virus 3 (HHV-3), which causes herpes zoster, or shingles, in adults.

Chickenpox is usually diagnosed by observing the tell-tale rash and blisters that caused by chickenpox and from taking the sufferer’s medical history. Blisters located on the scalp are also a strong chickenpox indicator. Blood tests and various tests of the pox blisters themselves can confirm the chickenpox diagnosis.

As with other viral diseases, antibiotics are ineffective in combatting chickenpox. In the vast majority of cases, a chickenpox infection should simply be allowed to run its course. In most cases, the best course of treatment is to keep the chickenpox sufferer comfortable while allowing their natural defenses fend off the illness. Calamine lotion, oatmeal baths in lukewarm water, antihistamine lotions, and topical lotions can help alleviate some of the itching. If scratching of chickenpox blisters becomes a problem, it is best to keep fingernails trimmed short to reduce the chance of turning the blisters into sores, which can get infected which can cause scars.

Immunization is the best defence against chicken pox. However, there are some people who don not believe in vaccination for themselves and their children. To keep from transmitting chickenpox to people such as this, as well as unvaccinated visitors from other countries, it is recommended that chickenpox sufferers remain isolated at home until 4 days after the symptoms have passed.

There are various effective antiviral medicines available. They are most effective when they are administered within 24 hours of the appearance of the chickenpox rash. For the majority of healthy children, these medicines are unnecessary. However, these medicines are especially beneficial for adults and teenagers who generally develop more severe symptoms. Additionly, for people with lung conditions such as asthma, skin conditions such as eczema or recent sunburn, or those who have recently taken steroids, or those who need to take a regular aspirin regimen, antiviral medication may be an effective treatment.

Some physicians also prescribe the antiviral medicines to people who are living with a chickenpox sufferer but have not had chickenpox themselves. This is to help them avoid developing a more severe case of chickenpox as a result of their increased exposure to the disease. If you suspect that you or your child has contracted chickenpox, it is advisable to contact your doctor as soon as possible to avoid the risk of developing complications or transmitting the disease to others.

WARNING: DO NOT USE ASPIRIN. Unless instructed by your child’s doctor, never give aspirin to a child suffering from a viral illness since the use of aspirin in such cases has been linked to development of Reye’s Syndrome. Reye’s Syndrome is a serious and potentially deadly encephalitis-type illness. If pain-relief is necessary, acetaminophen and ibuprofen may be used safely.

Aromatherapy: Geranium – Natural Hormone Treatment

Aromatherapy: Geranium – Natural Hormone Treatment

Article by KG Stiles. LMT, CAT, CBP, RBT

Effective research and clinical evaluation has been done in Germany on the main chemical components found in Geranium oil. Clinical results were found for alcohol geraniol found in Geranium oil.

The results of these studies show successful treatment for autonomic nervous system imbalances. The autonomic nervous system is known to stimulate our hormonal production and response.

Autonomic nervous system balance is an essential KEY for healthy functioning of the body, mind and emotions.

Manifestations of autonomic nervous system imbalance include common symptoms of headache, hot flashes, irregular heartbeat, nervousness, depression and anxiety.

“Vegetative dystony” is the term used to describe autonomic nervous system imbalance and its accompanying symptoms.

According to Dr. Andrew Weil medical vocabulary for imbalances of the autonomic nervous system practically do not exist in North American medicine.

However both Germany and Japan, two modern day industrial giants, acknowledge the condition and use the term “vegetative dystony.”

Our modern day lifestyle promotes our living in a chronic condition of stress and subject to an increasing array of environmental toxins. These two conditions are cited as primary causes for autonomic nervous system imbalances and resulting hormonal disturbances.

There are many varieties of Geranium oil available. Geranium oils from Madagascar are by far the finest available and most researched for their therapeutic effect of balancing hormones.

The Bourbon variety of Geranium oil from Madagascar is considered by many to be the most desirable for hormonal balance.

Geranium Bourbon has an especially heady and sensual aroma that will energize your senses. The Geranium graveolens variety from Bourbon is my personal favorite geranium oil in a blend!

Considered the poor woman’s Rose Oil Rose Geranium (Pelargonium roseum) has a fresh, slightly rosy scent and is excellent as a stand alone oil. As with other Geranium oils from Madagascar Rose Geranium mixes well with many oils and its effects are similar.

Your Questions About Shingles

David asks…

what could be wrong with me? I have many different symptoms over the past few years…..?

recurrent back pain/pinched nerve on the left side. recently no pain but i developed numbness in back.
an annoying sore/tender spot on my head on the left. sometimes it feels hot or swollen. (noticed 2 yrs ago. the dermatologist said it was”irritated” & not to worry bout it.)
then last november i had BAD skin problems. dry spots (eczema?) that when scratched turned into sores that wouldn’t heal. i never had skin problems before. the derm said it DIDN’T look like shingles but the wounds wouldn’t completely heal til i tried taking valtrex.
sometimes my thinking is fuzzy & i feel fatigued or “off”.
last year i was diagnosed with GERD. & i was having bad sharp pain in guts on my left side. i would get also get a “fluttering” feeling on the left. upper endoscopy showed inflammation but no clear reason why.
about 2 yrs ago i had a problem with muscle control over my right eye, it was drooping a bit.
had a few “panic attacks” last yr
i often catch sinus/throat infections
i have tried eating healthy things & drinking lots of water & green tea. i am working out a few times a week now. my overall energy strength & health isimproved but there is SOMETHING going on that i don’t think diet is gonna fix.

admin answers:

Hi THere

Look closely at the suggestions I make below (look at #4 especially), regardless of the health issue. If you do these steps below, you’ll give the body time to heal the issue without having to digest meat. Dairy, manmade chemicals, preservatives, etc.

Here is a list of important health topics people dont realize or take for granted and thus causes issues.

1. Stress = most of it is self induced. Even thinking and actually talking about negative means you attact more negative energy. Visualize and “Feel” a healthy beautiful body (end result) and you’ll have it before you know it.
Once the body breaks down from stress then its much easier to get sick or unhealthy for that matter.

Obviously exercise helps manages stress tremendously!

Remember what you focus on (negative or positive) is what you will attract in your life. This universal law is called “The Law of Attraction”.

2. Lack of water. Drink a gallon of distilled water to hydrate the body and flush out the excess waste and toxins out of the blood.

3. Nutrition = this helps heal the body and will gives it energy to work on the internal issues. Mainly raw organic fruit and vegetables. If you only ate organic raw F & V for 7-10 days and drank distilled water you would see a change in your energy and be on your way to better health. Letting the body rest from digesting meats, dairy, and processed foods would do wonders for you.

4. Clogged colon = Not eliminating the processed food and chemicals we eat every day will give anyone an illness and/or disease. If doctors we’re actually taught this, our society would be much improved. DO a colon and liver cleanse to clear out excess waste and toxins in the blood. This will help heal any illness or disease.

Best of health to you

Helen asks…

could this eye problem be a problem from past fighting?

I have tried to think of a thousand ways to word this.

in short, I lived with my father he found I had a natural skill for fighting and when he was drunk he would Challenge locals who came into his pub saying his daughter (11yrs) could beat their son hands down in a fight, anyway ths isn’t really the issue.

I was ill not long ago it started with a small rash on the top of my head (center parting) one doctor said it was shingles, another said it wasn’t and another said he wasn’t sure. Though I suffered a lot of the symptoms of shingles it is still unknown if i had it or not. My vision started to blur in my right eye about the same time that i was ill, I was sent to a specialist who has now referred me for an MRI scan because a Field test showed i had a loss of vision, this is to see if anything is pressing on my optic nerve or to see if this is the onset of MS.

I have never told any of my doctors about the fighting as i don’t want to be slapped onto anti depressants or told i need counseling because life is pretty good now and the past is in the past,

could a past blow to the head cause this sudden vision loss, I don’t feel it is worth mentioning but should i mention it just in case??

admin answers:

The answer is – it could have if a hit in the eye damaged the optic nerve or caused a hemorrhage within the eye. The test that was ordered was a Visual Fields test where you looked into a machine and pressed a button when you saw dots flash on the screen at different angles from your eyes. It is used to measure your peripheral vision (or the loss of it). You didn’t say what the MRI showed but yes, you need to tell the opthomologist about this fighting because at that age, it could have caused considerable damage which could now be affecting you. There is also a chance that the shingles you had could have spread into your eye which could also be serious.

Write everything down and then take it to the opthomologist and let them do the tests that are necessary to diagnose your condition and then treat it effectively.

Good luck to you.

Lisa asks…

What do I do about how my blood was taken?

This has been about a month ago, I was really sick and went to the ER. They had to draw blood from me and when they did they just started an IV because I needed fluid cause I was so dehydrated (no biggy), lol. Even though the paramedic who stuck me didn’t have the hose thingy tightened and blood went all over the floor from my arm. So that was no problem. He cleaned me up, got some blood and got the fluid going. About 10 minutes later a lab tech lady came in and said they needed more blood for more tests cause they didn’t get enough the first time. I asked if she was going to take it out of the other arm and she said yes (still thinking to myself, no big deal). I donate blood and I’m not afraid of those needles, however I can never watch them actually poke the needle in me. I look away and once poked I’m fine and look around. This lab tech grabbed a needle, so I thought she was preparing and so i turned my head but waiting for her to sterilize my arm. To my shock, as I had my head turned she just poked me and drew my blood. She didn’t even wipe the area with anything. Mind you, I just came off a roof from helping my brother shingle, I was filthy dirty. I’ve had cold/allergy like symptoms since but I don’t think it’s caused any damage. Should i let the hospital know? (stupid question ah)? I just don’t want the hospital to discriminate against me if I make this report. I usually am in the ER about once a month for migraines. Everyone is usually great to me (knock on wood). Who knows whats said once I walk out the doors though, lol. In all my 31yrs of life, I’ve always had my area’s cleaned when blood is draw. When I donate blood they clean the area for like 2 minutes with 2 different chemicals. I didn’t say anything cause it all happened so fast. Once she had my blood she jetted for the door. I was just in shock an didn’t want to argue cause I didn’t feel well. So whats E1’s opinion on this? Thanks, oh one more thing. When the paramedic drew my blood, this lab tech was even in the room and seen him cleaning my other arm before he drew the blood??????????
Yah, nice assumption Mike H. You have no idea what kind of medication is even given to me (if any), so is there something your hiding and coming clean with on here. By the way I’ve been recommended by my family Dr. to see the ER when I start to vomit from my migraines cause brain tumors and heart problems run in my family. I’ve passed out because they have gotten so bad. Did I say I’m treated everytime, no I did not. Did I say I’m treated with a narcotic (vicodin-like u mentioned), no I didn’t. Sorry to hear that your ER probably hates you but I’m going to protect my health when it comes to after hour Dr. visits specially when advised. So you take care and make sure you pop that vicodin before that soccer game so you can handle all those kids now.

admin answers:

It is no big deal that she didnt wipe the area. Several years ago there was a study which was conducted that showed diabetics who gave themselves insulin shots through their pants were at no greater risk of infection than those who wiped with alcohol first.
I wouldnt worry about it and let it go.

Sandy asks…

Chicken Pox or just a cold?

On 15th August my 3 year old boy came into contact with someone who had shingles (obviously we didn’t know he had shingles at the time).
Two days ago my Son had a slightly high temp, then again yesterday and today he’s woken up with a snotty nose and sneezing his little head off.

Are these the symptoms that you’d get before the spots appear or do you think he’s managed to miss it and its just a cold.

Our Son is a Page Boy at our friends wedding on 5th Sept, if it does turn out to be chicken pox do you think the spots will have been and gone by then?

I really hope its not the pox, Im 3 months pregnant and the last thing I need is to be in contact with a poorly child and also Im desperate for him to be page boy for the first time!

Timing couldn’t have been any worse could it!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sometimes children have a fever and cold like symptoms before the spots appear, normally 2 days before.

If he does get it, make sure his nails are short to prevent scarring. It isn’t great timing but most of the spots may be gone by then. If he does get chicken pox, an antihistamine can ease itchyness so worth a try so that atleast he can be page boy in the future – scar free!

John asks…

Diagnose me please? neck pain, etc.?

I know I should go to the doctor. In fact, I will probably go tomorrow. But I’m wondering what MIGHT be wrong with me, so that I will know what to expect. I hate needles and tests and hospitals, so I’m hoping to avoid all that if possible.

I am a 28yo female, healthy. I did have both shingles and erythema nodosum (sp?) in the past year or two.

Current symptoms:
-a VERY stiff, sore neck for the past 3 days. I have no knowledge of any injury but Friday morning woke up with a very painful neck. It hurt to turn it side to side or up and down. Sharp pain when moving it in any direction.
-Yesterday, the stiff, sore neck spread into the back of my head, like where my neck muscles connect to my head, so the base of the back of my head is sore too. Pain also spread down my neck to my upper back and shoulders. It is nothing like any stiff neck I have ever had- much more painful.
-mild fever of 99-100 degrees. I have been taking ibuprofen so it is possible it would be slightly higher if it weren’t for the ibuprofen.
– slight nausea, but I think that is from the pain of my neck (when I am in a lot of pain like from a broken bone or shingles, I always feel kinda nauseous so I think that is related to that.)
-mild headache, which again, I think is from the pain in my neck.
-have had symptoms that seem like a sinus infection (common for me) for about a week. Probably unrelated to the neck. Mostly a runny nose.
-generally feeling unwell.

Any thoughts?

PS- I originally thought maybe meningitis, BUT I don’t have a rash, haven’t been vomiting, I can touch my chin to my chest (actually, bending my head forward is the easiest direction to bend it), and I can lie on my back and lift my leg straight up, which I read is a test for meningitis.

admin answers:

You are correct in seeing your doc for this problem which is not getting better. You are also correct re the test you read about to rule out meningitis as this can cause a sore neck and fever. You are likely experiencing myalgias or muscular pains related to a viral infection which is causing your cold symptoms-but this can be tricky and I agree with your decision to get checked out.I hope all goes well for you and you are feeling well in no time-sounds like you have had a lot on your plate with the shingles and the erythema nodosum and all.

Chicken pox treatment and prevention

Chicken pox treatment and prevention

Article by Groshan Fabiola

Chicken pox is caused by varicella zoster, a virus that also causes shingles. Years after your child has suffered from chicken pox, that virus may reappear as a rash named shingles. However, this can happen to a very small amount of chicken pox patients.

Since the year 1995, a vaccine against chicken pox is available and many of the doctors recommend it, if not all. Children under one year old can not receive the vaccine against chicken pox. What this vaccine does is to prevent children from developing a very serious chicken pox case. That is to say that the children who have received the vaccine against chicken pox will still go on to develop this disease, but it will be a much milder form. This will mostly happen to almost 95 percent of all chicken pox patients that have received the vaccine. Furthermore, this vaccine has little side effects that can be tolerated very well by the child. However, if your child is allergic to gelatin, the vaccine against chicken pox is not recommended.

Because chicken pox is contagious, when your child is suffering from this condition, the best thing to do is keep him/ her home for a while. The first symptoms that you will see in your child when he/ she has caught the chicken pox virus are some normal flu- like symptoms. Later, the rash will appear and then the blisters, that are characteristic for chicken pox. Another thing that is not very good about chicken pox is that children are more contagious just a few days before the chicken pox rash appears on their bodies. At that time, most of the parents do bot know that their child has chicken pox.

When your child has chicken pox, there are two main things that you should do. One is to relive the itching of the rash, thing that is very normal in chicken pox cases and the other is to keep your child from developing any skin infections. Special lotions, baths with oatmeal or baking soda are very useful in chicken pox cases. Because the rash turns into blisters filled with fluid, that in turn crust and fall off, you must be very careful and keep a good hygiene of your child. When suffering from chicken pox, he/ she might break those blisters and eventually this could lead to infections.

There are also other complications to chicken pox, but they are rare.

What Do Neuralgia And Sciatica Have In Common

What Do Neuralgia And Sciatica Have In Common

Article by George A. Lindstrom

Both neuralgia and sciatica (a form of neuralgia) affect people in their nerves, leading to chronic pain that can be very difficult to treat. Neuralgia is more commonly found in older people; however, anyone can suffer from both neuralgia and sciatica, sometimes in an ongoing battle where it comes and goes.Neuralgia can be caused by a number of things including drugs, illness such as diabetes or infections like shingles when the nerve endings are put under pressure. Often, the cause is difficult to pinpoint. Neuralgia can either be central or peripheral and there are several types including trigeminal neuralgia, dental neuralgia, occipital neuralgia or postherpetic neuralgia. Sciatica is also a type of neuralgia that affects the nerve that runs from your spine, through your pelvis, down your leg and to your foot (the sciatic nerve).Sciatica can be caused by overusing the leg, which impacts this particular nerve. It can also be caused by pressure on the pelvis, which affects the nerve endings of the sciatic nerve. This could come from a slipped disk, problems with the piriformis, tumours or pelvis injuries. Neuralgia and sciatica are thus both associated with damage to the nerves or the sciatic nerve respectively.Because of the effect that neuralgia and sciatica have on the nerves the symptoms can vary. Those affected by neuralgia may feel muscle weakness or some sensitivity on parts of their skin while those affected by sciatica will feel a more localized pain along their sciatic nerve from their hip joints to knee joints to ankle joints, normally only on one side. Or they will feel the same symptoms as neuralgia – muscle weakness or sensitivity – but just along their leg. However the common symptom of neuralgia and sciatica is pain, which can be incredibly crippling. Pain may be constant or sharp and sudden.Treatment for both neuralgia and sciatica is difficult as there are no tests to determine that the symptoms a person is experiencing are indeed neuralgia as they are similar to symptoms such as multiple sclerosis. However pain relief is on the top of the lists for treatment for both neuralgia and sciatica because the pain for both can be so severe. Pain relief medication can range from antidepressants to over the counter painkillers or injections. For neuralgia, treatment will include trying to target the cause of the nerve damage whether it is diabetes or a tumour or shingles which is affecting the nerves. It is also often difficult to control pain because the nerves don’t react typically to painkillers in cases of neuralgia and sciatica. For both neuralgia and sciatica, the symptoms may go away on their own, otherwise surgery can be considered for both if the pain continues over a long period. Surgery can help relieve the cause of the pain and nerve damage. In the case of sciatica, physical therapy is also an option where the legs, through which the sciatic nerve runs, can be stretched and flexed. The area which is sore can also be isolated by putting ice or heat on it.Because of the nature of which neuralgia and sciatica come about, they are more commonly regarded as a symptom from a cause, than an actual isolated condition as something has caused the damage to the nerves which has resulted in the nerve pain. However both are very real and painful experiences to which there is often no quick fix and can lead to tender areas all over your body from back pain to muscle weakness. Those who experience this should consult their physicians as soon as possible. Both neuralgia and sciatica (a form of neuralgia) affect people in their nerves, leading to chronic pain that can be very difficult to treat. Alternative Treatment For Pain

Alternative Treatment For Pain

Article by Franchis Adam

Pain is an unpleasant sensation that ranges from mild discomfort to almost unbearable agony, and can be acute or chronic.

Acute pain is short term and can last from a few seconds to a few hours, days or weeks – for instance, pain caused by injections, migraine, burns, and surgery. The pain may be self-limiting, or it may act as a warning that something is wrong and requires immediate treatment.

Chronic pain is persistent, intractable pain that may worsen rather than improve with time. Common examples are arthritic pain, backache, postherpetic pain (after shingles, for instance), neuralgia, and phantom limb pain. Many complementary medical techniques are useful for chronic pain, which is usually more deep seated than acute and often more distressing, because of its longevity. The prospect of long-term drug therapy to control pain often tips the balance in favor of a decision to try alternative medicine, for this is often gentler, less invasive, and has fewer side effects.

Treatment

Exercise helps to stimulate the endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers, and also provides distraction from pain. Even a brisk, ten-minute walk can help, but do seek professional advice before undertaking any exercise program.

Psychological Therapy Our thoughts, feelings, and behavior have a considerable impact upon how much pain we feel, regardless of the causes. If we are depressed or anxious, pain is likely to affect us more; the more we dwell on it or encourage others to treat all as ill, the worse it is likely to become. Psychologists who specialize in pain-relief programs suggest that chronic pain sufferers take up active hobbies or interests as a distraction from it. They also advise positive thinking, whenever feelings of pain threaten to overwhelm them.

Diet and Nutrition

The pain-relieving amino acid DL-phenylalanine (DLPA), which is found naturally in foods such as nuts, cheese, avocados, bananas, sesame, and pumpkin seeds, is available as a dietary supplement, and has proved useful in treating pain. However, consult your physician, since migraine victims and some sufferers of high blood pressure should not use it.

Aromatherapy

Different oils, either sprinkled in a bath or inhaled from a few drops on a handkerchief, can ease various types of pain. For instance, camphor, lavender, and sage can relax painful muscles. Lavender is also analgesic, and is often used in the treatment of migraine. Bergamot, camomile, and marjoram are used to relieve pain.

Visualization This is a technique that helps man people. Close your eyes, relax, and choose an image you could believe would soothe your pain, such as a warm golden glow that melts it away, or a gently flowing stream that carries away. Use whatever works for you.

Relaxation Pain generally feels worse when you are tired, stressed, and tense, so practicing relaxation technique on a regular basis should help to relieve it.

Consult a qualified practitioner/therapist for:

Massage A gentle massage can soothe many kinds of pain and relieve tension. Fear and tension often contribute to the level of pain.

Acupuncture Acupuncture is often used successfully to help relieve conditions such as arthritis, back pain, and chronic migraine. The principal approach is treatment of the meridians passing through the painful area.

Tens (Transcutaneous Electrial Nerve Stimulation) This can relieve back, arthritic, musculoskeleta, cancer, postoperative, labor, phantom limb, neuralgia, migraine, and sports injury pains.

Acupressure This has been known to help relieve chronic arthritis if carried out daily.

Osteopathy and Chiropractic These treatments may help particularly musculoskeletal problems such as neck and shoulder pain, backache, and sciatica.

Alexander Technique Pain that has its root in tension, or is exacerbated by tension, may be relieved by this technique. Backache, arthritis, migraine, and other problems can be successfully treated.

Hypnotherapy, Autogenic Training, Healing, Yoga, and Meditation Any of these disciplines may also be helpful in combating pain, since they are all calming, de-stressing techniques.
