How do you get Ramsay – Hunt Syndrome?

My best friend came down with Ramsay – Hunt Syndrome two weeks ago. I know that it is caused by the virus that also causes shingles or chickenpox. She wants me to come see her, but I’m afraid I’ll catch it. She say’s it isn’t contagous, but it is a viral disease. Am I wrong to thinks I might be able to catch it?

What causes a muscle twitch.?

A muscle near my shoulder has been twitching on and off all day. I think it’s my…teres major…maybe…but it’s bugging me.
I know that some nerve diseases can cause twitching…but the only nerve problem i’ve ever had was the shingles…that just spreads to your nerve endings and makes them really sore.
What are some other causes of muscle twitches?

I’m 21 yrs old and i have celiac disease but i also get shingles quite frequently as well as canker sores in my mouth. Not only that but I also have vitiligo *not sure of spelling but i lose pigment in my skin. Now i know all these can be caused by problems with your immune system and i feel they are all connected somehow but doctors always kind of shrug it off cause I appear healthy but I don’t feel healthy. Everyday I wake up i just feel bad in general. Really the only time I have felt healthy is when i’ve been put on steriods when i get shingles really bad. I was just wondering if anyone on here had any suggestions for me.

What can a pain management doctor give me for shingles. Ive had since july 2008? I don’t have the pain, just irritation of the skin. I cant put on my shirt cause my side tightens so much from the shingles. I have tried all the medicines that my regular doctor prescribed and no luck. So he referred me to the pain medicine doc. Will this pain management doc work?

I understand that this may be with me forever or until the Lord sees fit to say “enough”, but I want to know if any one else is affected with equal pain and discomforts. I am about to resign then retire from my teaching job due to frequent absences because of PHN. Just checking. Oh yes, the shingles came on me on 11/29/99.

How to diagnose Post Herpetic Nueralgia?

I had shingles at an unusually young age (when I was 6) on the left side of my neck- since then I have had muscle spasms and chronic pain and weakness. I have gone to PT and see a pain management doctor. I was on the subway a little while ago and saw an ad for treatment for PHN and it hit me that i may very well have this since I have had this neck pain since i can remember and it is in the same place where I had shingles.

My primary care doctor agrees and sent me for a nerve test, to a spine doctor and to a neurologist- all of which I anticipate will help. I’m 23 now and live a very active life- work full time, school semi full time and am very social. I have found lately the pain and caused me to miss school as i cant hold my head up after work from the pain and cancle plans that I use to enjoy.

Even now aI am propped on my left side with pillows- The nerve test does not say that I have any nerve damage- does this rule out PHN?

Would I be considered disabled?

Over the few years I have been diagnosed and treated for high blood pressure, Arrhythmia, depleted vitamin d, depleted potassium, hypothyroidism, pancreatitus, shingles, swollen joints, fibromyalgia, sjogren’s syndrome, another underlying (and currently under diagnosis) autoimmune disease – have tested positive three times: I am also being treated for dry eye, tongue ulcers. I have three bulging discs, two in my neck, one in my lower back, arthritis in my neck and spine; I have been treated for the past eight years for depression; fatigue; I also have chronic kidney stones, passing 3 to 5 every year for the past 21 years.. I am thinking seriously about filing for social security disability because of all that is wrong with me. I am currently in physical therapy pool therapy twice a week for pain management, to build strength and flexibility. I am only 50 years old and have always been able to work through my issues, but the doctors have told me I can no longer work in my field because it triggers my autoimmune issues. I am looking for serious answers. I need guidance – not critisism for being in my condition.

Gabapentins are GABA analogues that relieve pain in nerve. This medicine is frequently used to treat various types of neuralgia. It is now widely used to relieve pain, especially neuropathic pain.

Gabapentins are anti-seizure and antiepileptic medications that are used in combination with other antiseizures to control partial seizures in epilepsy. Moreover, it is also used to treat major depressive disorder. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Gabapentins in the year 1994 for use as an adjunctive medication to control partial seizures. In the 2002, it was also approved for the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia, pain in nerve or neuropathic pain following shingles, other painful neuropathies, and nerve-related pain. In December 2004, the FDA granted final approval to a generic equivalent to Neurontin made by the Israeli firm Teva.

This medicine is available in market under brand names Gabarone and Neurontin in the forms of tablet and capsule. It also helps to relieve pain, neuropathic pain, migraine headaches and pain in nerve caused due to herpes shingles. Gabapentins are widely believed to help patients with post-operative chronic pain (usually caused by nerves that have been severed accidentally in an operation and when grown back, have reconnected incorrectly) and nerve pain associated with spinal cord injury. It may be effective in reducing pain and spasticity in multiple sclerosis. It has also had success in treating certain instances of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. It is a very capable medication used in the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia and pain. Because dermatological patients suffer pain from painful tumors, after surgery, in conjunction with neuropathic ulcers, during dressing changes involving serious medical conditions, its applications seem assorted.

Gabapentin is also used for some animal treatments, but formulations (especially liquid forms) for human use may contain the sweetener Xylitol which is toxic to dogs, so care must be taken if the human version is used for veterinary purposes. The most common side effects in adult patients include dizziness, drowsiness, and peripheral edema (swelling of extremities). These side effects mainly occur at higher doses in the elder patients. This drug should be used carefully in patients with renal impairment due to possible accumulation and toxicity. It should not be discontinued suddenly after long term use. Instead, it should be reduced gradually over a period of weeks or months in order to help minimize or prevent the withdrawal syndrome. Upon discontinuation the usual Side effects that have been reported in medical literature include insomnia, restlessness, agitation.
