Your Questions About Shingles

Lisa asks…

i think my son may have chicken pox???? please help me, im tired of waiting for his doc to call!?

Ok, so i might be freaking out a bit but this is my first kid and he’s never had to go to the doctor for being sick or take any meds like antibiotics or anything (we’ve been really blessed so far) so its the first time ive ever had to go through this. Ok, so last thursday we had family come in for the holiday and we were with them friday, saturday, and sunday. Monday night my 13month old started with a fever and cold like symptoms and they have continued still today. But, i just found out that yesterday one of our family members who came to visit has shingles. Is it possible for my son to get it? He has been super cranky, runny nose, fever….etc. I already took him to the doctor on tues and they said that he just has a little virus and some congestion and his symptoms should go away in 3-5 days.(this was before i knew about the shingles) Last night his temp was normal but his body was very warm, especially his stomach, his head felt a little warm but not hot. (weird i know but its been that way all week even when his temp was 102 his stomach felt hot). ive read many different things on the internet so if anyone has had experience with chicken pox any information is greatly appreciated!!! Thanks

It is possible that your son could get chicken pox from coming into DIRECT contact with the vesicle fluid of a shingles lesion. Usually though, these lesions are covered so the risk is slim that he actually came into contact unless the person with shingles touched the blister fluid then immediately had contact with him.

HOWEVER!! The incubation period for chicken pox is 2 to 3 weeks (commonly 14 to 16 days) so the time frame is not right for you to be worrying over Chicken pox (which is mostly an annoying illness for the most part anyway – complications are VERY rare in young children)

He’s probably got something else after having all those other family members in his face for the weekend. Or if by chance he does crop up with Chicken pox vesicles in the next day or two….he didn’t get it from your visiting family members ( it’s too soon)

Note: Even though someone who has never had Chicken Pox can get Chicken Pox IF (and that’s a big if) they come into contact with the fluid from a Shingles’ lesion…..You CANNOT get Shingles from coming into contact with Chicken Pox and you can’t get Shingles from coming into contact with Shingles either. It’s a one-way street.

Linda asks…

are herpes simplex blisters really painful?

are herpes simplex blisters really painful? and do they form in clusters?

I think I have herpes simplex….I think I have all the symptoms and I am really scared…this could also be all in my head

I started with one blister on my chest, and then on my back and then it started forming a couple on my arms, stomach, legs, feet, scalp and vaginal area. They are not clusters, they are single blisters and I try not to pop them…I also have what looks like a canker sore on my gums…its around one tooth and it started out white and tender and then the next day it was purple back and had white gooey layer on top of it like it was peeling the skin off…It was not painful like blister or ne thing, it was just tender…I think I also had some think mucous but I am not sure, again i think this is all in my head….I went to the dentist today to get my gums checked out and he thinks its a gum problem that needs steroids,,. I also saw a doctor yesterday and she prescribed to me Valtrex cause she thinks it could be chicken pox for the second time (shingles)
I do not have any rash, I don’t have alot of blister on my body just a couple spots on each part of my body…they are not painful and they are not clustered together
I’m thinking that the gum problem could be just be there at the wrong time and might get diagnosed with the blisters…because i have had problems around that gum before when i brush it would bleed.
I dont have any other sores in my mouth
please tell me if you have any idea what it could be…it would make me feel alot better, thank you

Susan asks…

bile duct cancer and itching?

My mother has had terrible itching and painful skin, mainly on her head and the trunk of her body for about 7 weeks, with no rash. She can’t sleep and feel’s feverish as well. Last year the doctor suspected she may have bile duct cancer, because her liver and pancreatic enzymes we’re so elevated. She was also jaundice then, but not now. They hadn’t found a tumor when she was scoped then either. Anyway, I thought the itching/skin pain may be related to having shingles, but the doctor believes it’s cancer related and doing futher testing.
I’ve never heard of cancer causing these types of symptoms, could this really be the cause?

admin answers:

Unfortunately the Dr is probably correct. Ask the Dr about prescribing the medicine doxepin for her itching. This will also help her rest.

It’s probably best to see a neurologist & make sure you mention all of these symptoms to him/her.

Sandra asks…

Could this be major anxiety?

So I guess you can say since I was a little kid, I’ve always been a bit of a hypochondriac. Always thought something was wrong with me. It wasn’t till about 2 yrs ago when I turned 18 that I started having what I believe to be anxiety attacks. Sudden feeling of dizziness, nausea, heart pounding, even thoughts that I may be dieing. A few months ago I got so stressed that I even got shingles from having such a high level of stress. I am now 20, I do better now than before, by telling myself its all in your head, you’ll be fine. Lately I’ve been having sudden spells of nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, and fatigue. Is symptoms like that associated with anxiety. I always worry its something terribly wrong. Also how do you get rid of anxiety naturally, without all the anti depressants and what not that i refuse to take ever in my life!?
valium sounds good with some bikram yoga too ha

admin answers:

Samantha,

I can relate to anxiety.

I had anxiety attacks when I had to speak in public. Or when there would be more than a few people around me in the same room. It was something that started when I was a teenager and that lasted over years and subsequently affected my career until not so long ago.

At some point, I was prescribed medicine but I wanted to avoid that too(because of side effects). That’s when I discovered a program that literally pulled me out of that “hole”. It is a 100% natural method. The main key here is that you should no longer fear the thought of anxiety. You have to get out of/break that loop. Not only did that cure me – you become your true self again – but I was also extremely surprised to even discover newly built self-confidence.

Good luck!
