Your Questions About Shingles

Robert asks…

can i get shingles (herpes zoster) by touching a towel that an infected person used?

My aunt has shingles right now, and she took a shower and the towel she used, she stupidly left it in the bathroom, and today i used that towel to dry my hands. Can i get shingles this way???? šŸ™ i’ve been reading that it can only be passed if you touch an open blister on a person who has shingles, but she didn’t do that and she still got it!

admin answers:

Yes.

William asks…

How long do you need to take off work if you have Herpes Zoster a.k.a. Shingles to get better?

I went back to work almost immediately and work in a very stressful workplace. I think that I am might have made a mistake by going back so quickly. Boss’s are understanding at first but when they need you there and they are too lazy to do things on their own all reason seems to fly out the window. What is a reasonable time to give yourself to get better. I was diagnosed July 7th and went to work three days of that week. And now am here at home waiting for the urgent care to open up to try to get a doctor’s note.
I guess what I am really looking for is how many weeks or days should I ask my M.D. to write me a note for? What is a reasonable time frame?

admin answers:

Even after you are no longer contagious, you can remain in discomfort or pain for a long time. My father had it and his was actually inside ( no blisters on the skin just a big long welt ) and lasted for 9 months. He had alot of pain with his. Everyone is different and you should discuss your symptoms with your doctor and let him tell you how long you may need to be off work. Some people, after the contagious stage is over, has only a little discomfort and doesn’t have to miss any work.
I wish you a speedy recovery.

Linda asks…

You can get herpes zoster and herpes simplex at the same time?

wonder known as a friend of mine who has herpes support and then left a few blisters on the lip will also herpes lip simplex

admin answers:

They do not occur at same sites.. On lips it is most probably simplex…

Zoster tends to occurs more commomnly on the back and spreads in a continuous pattern.

Theoretically they can occur at the same timebut rarely at the same site.

Betty asks…

What do shingles Herpes Zoster look like?

Do they look like chicken pox and real sore? Can they also go in your scalp? What do you do other than go to your dr?
Do they look like chicken pox? hurt and then scab over and leave a scar. How long does this last? Do they go on your upper arms and shoulders and back. Itch?

admin answers:

I had them, small blisters, if they leak I think they spread, I had them on the face and on my head, took about 10 days for the blisters to go away, though I stayed in severe pain for 3 months.

Jenny asks…

How does Herpes Zoster Spread?

No Herpes Zoster isn’t a *you know what* Spread one. It’s one of the 8 types, From the ones more commonly known as Canker Sores to this.
Oops. Yes I did mean Shingles.

admin answers:

Contact and hereditary. The virus will ly dormant in your system until it is exacerbated by stress. Use Herpacin? To treat the oral ones. It works really well.

Your Questions About Shingles

George asks…

Have you ever personally experienced?

A natural disaster? What was it and how did it affect your faith?

I was home when a tornado struck and it took the buildings and trees all around our house, but not one shingle was touched on the house. It was a miracle we could not believe when we saw the destruction 360 degrees and one of God’s signs and wonders to prove he protected us through it all.

admin answers:

Hi Dianne m.

My disaster was identical to yours.

I was also on the Island ( Jamaica) when 3 tornados passed by. I saw the first one twisting itself like a snake in the sky. It was a very small one, too, then it became a little bigger, then headed toward me. I had to run inside of the house, which was made of concrete. You know houses on the Island are often made of Concrete, which are very strong houses.

Then I watched the tornado pick up a Cow and threw it up in the air. Then it kindly put down the Cow on the earth, then torn up the trees, earth and such. It attacked the house I was staying at, but the house was too strong for it to damage.

But the other 2 tornados did destroy other places, especially houses made of wood instead of Concrete.

I do not want to experience such disaster again. No way!

Thank God. And God is powerful

Nancy asks…

I have a really dumb question? My son was gonna buy this house but it has been one thing after another.See >

Started out it had a Auction sign in the front Yard, then it has a FOR SALE BY OWNER sign in the yard, then It had a FOR SALE by owner Owner Financing sign in the Yard, Then it had a River Valley Sign in the Yard, Then it had a Lease sign, Then a REMAX sign. Even after they had moved in the REMAX sign stayed in the yard well then His Wife told me they were giving 80,000 for it. Well its a nice house we thought. But They started out to pay 699.99 a month then it was 799.99 then 810 then the contract was drawn up it went to 860 a month then to 924. We had the lights turned on and then some thing happened and the electric company came out and pulled the Light Meter said the wiring was below code for our town the Bills were running to high we found out it was a fire hazard. Then while I was there waiting with the Electric company I find out the thing has 9 layers of Shingles. Which will not pass HUD inspection. My son is buyer his wife is CO-Signer the guy will only talk to my sons wife >
I see all sort of RED FLAGS. But my daughter in law is mad Because He will not Fight to keep the house.I think if the Guy Who owns the House Would get the roof on it and now we Got him to fix the wiring It would be all right. But my son says he is finished. He is tired of the Crap with the House. That when she pulled up some kind of a good faith thing on the computer about the house they have marked it up to 200,000.00 But I found the HOUSE Listed in the REMAX Book listing it for 64,900.00 I asked them if they are getting it from TOM FLORES for 110,000.00 why has REMAX got it listed for 64,900.00 we asked TOM he Laughed and said OH THATS WHAT THEY OFFERED HIM FOR THE PLACE. That he has more than that tied up in the house for everything. If it is Listed for 64,900.00 in their Book Then ISN’T That what the selling Pricwe is Is Tom Trying to Screw them or what. Then Tom has them Deposit the Money for Payments in his account. I feel it’s Shady. Am I right?
They moved in In August My son refuses to Sign any papers he Keeps telling me that Tom tells him one thing and his wife something else all He seems to be worried about is the money gonna be in my account by the 5th of each month. The 1st papers they showed me the payment they were told would be 699 then add 100 dollars for Paper work I told him yes they always ass that then the Guy told the kids that he would pay Closing cost and Contract fee Now On the Papers the Closing costs are on their paper work. I told them NO If He is Paying them Then It should not show up on Theirr Contract and Tom told them he would pay Taxes and Insurance But now that also is on the papers thery showed me. Repairs show up on thier papers and If Tom is doing owner financing why are the Kids Payments jumping around so much. 1st I was told 699 then 799 plus 100 then I see papers now it’s 924. I told him not to sign anything to tell Tom to Shove IT. But Tom call my sons wife 3 or 4 times a day while she is at

admin answers:

The other 2 were right somewhat. But first you must read over the disclosure. If this stuff was stated in the disclosure there probally isnt much you can do and the amount they are paying seems to be a variable rate. Read over the contract. How long have they been living there? It seems like quite awile now if its jumped around that much. It may be too late already. It will be best to get a lawyers opinion on everything there are basic laws in every state but every state has different laws too thats why real estate agents can only sell in one state not every state. There are state and national exams they have to take but the national exams just say the laws that are national laws.

Michael asks…

What to do about bad roofing job?

My kitchen had a leak in the ceiling, so I called a roofer. They came out and said we had hail damage to our roof and they could replace the entire roof through the insurance company. They requested the first check upfront and came out within a day to do the replacement. A day after, the ridge vent was sticking up, as were shingles. Our satellite dish was detached and hanging. There appear to be multiple layers of shingles from the side view. Also, The shingles dont extend to the chimney, as there are big gaps. Lastly, there are shingles covering the gutters that are either sticking up or bent inwards. I’m far from an expert, but the old roof, at 20 years old, looked far better than this new roof (all asphalt). I told the contractors I wouldn’t sign over the second check until the work was satisfactory, however, I don’t even know what to really look for. They are coming out today and I don’t even want to let them back on our roof. Any suggestions? Can they sue us if we decide to take the remaining funds and let another roofer repair what they botched?
The contractors are licensed and insured. Our contract states “To do all work interior + exterior per insurance scope.” The insurance papers say “Remove 3 tab-20 r.-comp single roofing -incl. felt,” and ” Remove Add. layer of comp. shingles, remove & disp.” In my county, in Georgia, they are only required to obtain a permit if they remove the shingles and the wood underneath. I don’t know if that is what they did. Also the contract mandates arbitration, in the event of a dispute. I will try and post a few pics in a few.

admin answers:

If you signed a “contract” your in for a rough ride. If and when then finish and you think it “looks” ok…. Or still does not. I would voice my concerns, both verbal and via a certified letter. That way you have documentation as to the events and discussions you had.
Ive been down this road before. IF the insurance company is involved contact them and deal with them and let the roofing company deal direct with the insurance company. I went thought a very similar deal. In my case I paid a partial payment up from. Not near what they wanted.
Then they said when they were done they would send paper work in for final release. Well, I got my 2nd half of the money. I did not pay them the agreed price due to a number of “lack” items that we listed in the quote. I told them to sue me. Yes you heard that right. They said ok….. Long story short Insurance paid out a total for the roof of 6500. I paid Roofer 4000. I pocketed the remained. Insurance company calls me about 3 weeks after job is done. And says they need to come out to inspect work done. Perplexed with out typing out the whole deal. The scam roofer was trying to get Ins company to cut another check directly to them for 5K. WTF ! I told insurance company of all events and provided all my documation via dates and times of calls and whom I spoke to (roofer company) and my certified letter I also sent. Long story short my Insurance company sued the Roofer ! And the roofing company dropped it case with me and we called it a day. I had another company fix and finish the screw up. I still came out ahead. The insurance company helped.
Maybe this make sense to call ins company and see what they say. BTW if the Roofing company is GW CAT or GW construction be cautious

Donald asks…

Where do I stand with my landlord?

I recently found a great house to move into… or so I thought! It all looked good on paper and I thought that it was my dream house. We decided to do a lease with purchase option, and it all sounded great. I could see where there were water spots on the ceiling in a few places and I asked her about them. she told me that the roof had leaked a while ago, but that she had it fixed already. She told us that she would clean the house before we moved in (and she didn’t), have the carpets professionally cleaned (again… she didn’t), and that she would replace the garbage disposal (yep, you guessed it… she didn’t).

We gave her 1,000 dollars as a deposit for the house. She did not provide a lease for us to sign until the day that we moved into the house. We decided not to sign it until we looked it over (as we wanted to make sure that it all looked kosher). We waited to sign the lease and pay the first month’s rent until the end of the week because it was more convenient to all of us.

Long story short, we woke up to find that the roof leaked. When I say leaked… I mean really really bad (standing water). We immediately called her and she refused to speak with us about the issue and told us that if we were not going to pay rent and sign the lease that night, we had to get out. where do we stand with her? Many of my things are ruined because of water damage due to a leak that she failed to tell us about (trust me, there is no way she did not know about it… there apparently are 6 layers of shingles on the roof and the decking is horrible). I have a 3-year-old and finding a place to live takes time… what should I do???
FYI, we never threatened her to withhold rent… we would be glad to pay her, but she won’t even speak to us about the issues in the house… I’m looking for a place to live, but I don’t want to move my 3-year-old child into the slums of our area… or the “block” of our area… finding a house takes more than 4 hours… do I have any leverage for a place to stay since she didn’t divulge the information?

admin answers:

Am curious; when would you have insured the insides of the house;
only when you bought it?
Sorry for your situation.

I would give her notice, and sue her for fraud; she rented you
a place that was not in rentable condition; let the court
decide!

Mandy asks…

How do I handle this dispute with the roofer?

I recenty had my roof replaced from wind and hail damage. Allstate approved the repair an we signed the repair contract with the roofing company and the insurance co. accepted it. Work was completed and roofer was paid. He then submitted invoices to Allstate for re-payment of use of extra shingles. Allstate denied it. Then someone from the roofing company called Allstate pretending to me to say extra shingles were used. Allstate asked them to verify personal info and they hung up. Allstate called the # back and it was the roofing company. What re -course do I have?
Allstate told me directly about the call. They said someone called in saying they were me but hung when asked to verify my DOB. Allstate called the # back and it went to the voice mail of a roofing company employee. That’s how I know.
I guess I just have a problem with someone saying they are me for fraudulant reasons when they clearly are not. Who is to say that they dont somehow obtain the info needed to verify they are me? All Allstate asked for was my DOB. That is not a whole lot. If it worked, then it is my word against the roofers to say who actually called. I just have an issue with it.

admin answers:

“What re -course do I have?” – Well, none. They have not done anything to you. Allstate however could pursue him for fraud.

Your Questions About Shingles

Helen asks…

Very Personal Question (graphic, sorry)?

I have some questions, maybe some women can answer. Ive been under a lot of stress lately. Ive been on the pill (microgestin fe 1/20) for over a year now. About six months ago I was very wreckless and had a breif affair with a man.
About a month after, I went to my dr because I thought I had an std but from my symptoms she thought I had a UTI. Symtomps were the entrance to my vagina felt sore, kind of a burning sensation. But this sensation was NOT pronounced when I peed. They did a dipstick test, which was negative.
They said even though it was negative, to take antibiotics (Keflex) because the dipstick isnt always accurate and that many times its negative, but they see bacteria under a microscope. So I took it. I also got a pap test and got checked for chlaymidia and gonnorhreah (misspelled) to ease my fears (came back normal, neg for both).
Upon taking the antibiotics I got my first ever yeast infection. It was hell, all the classic symptoms (so itchy, cottage cheese discharge). Called the dr, she said to go buy monostat. I did, it helped.
About a month ago I developed shingles on my face, and took a course of antivirals (valtrex).
Im not really sure the symptoms ever went away. Its just so mild that with everything going on I can be distracted from it. Its just a very slight stinging/burning sensation on the entrance to my vagina. Its also an ” on and off ” feeling, like sometimes I dont feel it al all. No where else, just the entrance, no itching or anything. No bumps. Some discharge, kind of yellowish. Not a foul odor, but an odor. I can never tell with odors though, not to be sick, but my vagina has smelled all sorts of odors before so im not sure.
What could be going on? I honestly so scared I have an std. Is there any specific one this sounds like? When I first had symptoms, I bought a vagisil ph screening kit, if your ph is over 5 you have tric or bv. But I tested normal. Should I go buy another to take now, or should the first one have been right months ago?
Also if you get a pap, and you have tric, or bv or even a yeast infection and the technichian sees something under the microscope, would they tell you? Or is it an “only checking for this” sort of thing?
Ive always had a nervous/stressed out personality. And sometimes I wonder if I could be imagining it, or like I think it hurts so it hurts. Im just really freaking out, Im one of those people who feel every little thing in their bodies. I know this is a personal subject, thank you to anyone who answer. Only serious anwers, this is a serios question.
It happened too long ago to be herpes. If it were herpes, I would have had an outbreak by now. I know people with herpes and they say an outbreak, ecpecially your first is something you wont miss or mistake for anything else
If your only gonna say ‘ go to your dr ‘ ive been there. Ive involved my dr as much as possible, telling her every symptom

admin answers:

To be honest, it could be herpes. Sometimes you can develop it fast, sometimes it takes a long time. It just doesn’t show up afterwards. That’s why some people do not realize that they have herpes or any diseases for that matter. They do confuse it for something else. A lot of STD’s happen this way.

Pap tests are usually to check for HPV or cancer. Unless you ask them to check down there for any STD’s it’s usually not something they test for.

WHATS WRONG WITH MY ARM?

ok so today like 5 hours ago my arm started hurting. i thought it was my tricep but it followed the back of my arm from my arm pit to my mid forearm. i thought i pulled a muscle but it doesnt really feel like that since it follows a trail all the way down.

i hurts wen i move it or touch it and just regularly. it hurts most wen i bend my elbow or whole arm from my shoulder. i thought maybe i hyper extended it but i havent done any physical activities in the past few days…

the pain has just gotten worse and worse since it initially started hurting and i talked to my boyfriend and he sed the same EXACT thing happened to him last year and it was shingles. all the symptoms and feelings are the same- but i already had chicken pox.

what could this be?

ps: the pain is so bad im shaking and tears are streaming down my face– and i never cry about pain

admin answers:

It actaully could be shingles. I’ve had the same symptons and I had a broken wrist.

Robert asks…

Does anyone know what this might be?

Hi
About six weeks ago my hubby had a bout of shingles. This was treated for about 5 days and it seemed to go away, although the marks are still faintly there.
About two weeks ago he noticed a small mark under his right eye and a feeling of pressure behind it. It spread to around his right eye and his right temple and down his right hand side of his face to the jaw. Then it spread into his sinus’s and then left temple and then his forehead.
He also has weakness in his left arm and a bit of tingling all over his body. He has been to two doctors, one of them twice. Neither have any answers.
He has done research and has found that some of the symptoms mirror MS but the doctor has said there is not enough to go on but does acknowledge that is is not out of the question but has said to be wary of googling symptoms. He has however referred him to a neurologist later on. In the meantime my hubby is going mental over worrying.
I am not convinced about MS although I am not qualified to know this. I am however wondering if it is a left over from the shingles bout. Has anyone else had weird symptoms like this???
Any feedback would be great.
Thanks.
Thank you so far but as I mentioned we have been to two doctors (one of them twice) and have been referred to a neurologist. So we ARE seeing a professional.

Sandra asks…

Serious question…….please respond intelligently?

I’m waiting on some test results to see if i have herpes. i was misdiagnosed ( i think) 12 years ago, a doctor said i had shingles. recently i was talking to my pcp about my symptoms and he said i might have herpes. i never gave it a thought ’till he said that cause i thought it was shingles all these years. i’ve had two healthy children, and i thought with all the blood tests they do when your pregnant, that they checked for herpes. i was told they only check for that if you think you have it. i’ve had this recurring rash off and on on my butt for years, but a week ago it got worse. so at my obgyn appointment today, he gave me meds and took blood tests for herpes. So now my problem is, my husband is a really wonderful man and we have been married for 5 years. I don’t know how to tell him that i might have herpes and that he needs to get checked. I have been crying all day. my past sins are catching up with me and i’m finding it hard to face them now. any good advice will help, please!
if i do have herpes… how does this affect my children? i have a rash on my butt, but i’ve never had any oral rashes. i’ve kissed my children and shared food with them. can they get sick? they are very healthy children.

admin answers:

First off….Take a deep breath….
It might not be herpes…until the test results come back…your getting all worked up for nothing. I’ve yet to hear of a rash, on your butt being herpes. But then I could be wrong.
IF IT IS herpes…you have to know, that it could have happened years ago, and is just now showing up in your body. Some STDs take along time to manifest. Others do not show symptoms at all.
A great site to look at , and to be able to answer your questions is
www.westoverheights.com
Talk to your Dr…and get your results first before saying or doing anything…ok? And if it is herpes..its not a death sentence. Ok??

Question about infection, please help! 10 points!!!?

If a person is infected with herpes, what’s the probability that they will show symptoms within the first month or so? How does that work? I know other std’s such as HPV or even HIV dont’ show symptoms sometimes..herpes in NOT of of them, correct? Also, they say blood tests are NOT accurate to test herpes, but how can I get a swab test done if I am showing NO symptoms?? I had gotten a blood test done before, and it correctly showed negative. Iknow they say that if you even have cold sores, it may show up as positive..is it worth for me to get the blood test done since I never have had cold sores (and therefore, it would be an accurate result??) And how long should I wait after a “possible esposure” to get a blood test? I asked a nurse, but I thought up these questions afterwards!

10 POINTS FOR BEST AND MOST INFORMATIVE ANSWER!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

admin answers:

Usually when you first contract the virus, you will show symptoms about 25-30 days after. IF you don’t, you may be one of the lucky few who don’t really develop severe outbreaks and may just have silent ones (where you don’t know when you have an outbreak, even though you can still transmit the virus). The reason why is because herpes is basically caused by infection that causes your nerve endings to act up and then get irritated as a result of the fighting off of the infection. It really is just your nerve endings acting up and forming sores.

Some people may not have an outbreak until a few months after because the disease lies dormant after you contract it, this is also a possiblilty since not two people are the same.

It takes about 30 days for the virus to incubate in the body and finally show, that is why that is normally when you see the first symptoms after infection. If you feel any itching, tingling, pain during urination, inflammation around your pubic glands and area, fever like symptoms, fatigue, etc, chances are you are having an outbreak or may have the disease.

Blood tests are more accurate than swab tests at detecting the virus even when it is dormant, but you may still risk having a false negative even if you may be positive. The only time where you can get an accurate answer is when you feel you may be suffering an outbreak. I would get a blood test if you feel you may have been exposed. Try getting it when you feel any symptoms (even slight ones) or close to menstruation or times of stress (usually outbreaks are more common at this time).

I would wait about a month or so after exposure to get the blood test, since you may be lucky and catch it. I’d ask the nurse again though to verify all this, since you need to talk to her to make an appointment anyway.

Either way, whether you do or do not have it, it isn’t that big of a deal if you do. Many ppl are silent carriers and have no idea! Plus, if you don’t get bad outbreaks, you can go on with your life without even noticing that you have the disease. Just wear protection and let those you do sleep with know-it is only fair to them to do so.

John asks…

How soon can I get tested for STDs?

I did something bad last night.. I received oral from a stranger. Of course I have no symptoms right now, but when is the soonest I can get tested for all the stds? I looked things up online and it seems the 4 I have to worry about are Syphillis, NGU, Herpes, and Chlamydia. I want to get tested asap, but I don’t know how long it takes before something will show up in test results. Help!

admin answers:

*******************************************************************************
Syphillis is very rare in USA and very very very rarely transmitted via oral sex. But, if you still can’t relax, you can get a reliable test result after 6 weeks.
You can get a reliable test result anytime after 3 days for NGU & other bacterial desease. For herpes, wait at least 12 weeks for a reliable test result.

so, this is gonna be super long winded haha, but i would really appreciate it if you took the time to read it. i am terrified that i might have herpes, but im a complete virgin. and by complete, i mean i haven’t even had my first kiss, haha. anyway, i have almost all of the symptoms. every now and again, i get these bumps on my vaginal lips, they’re just slightly red, pretty much the same color as the rest of my skin, and don’t hurt unless im sitting an awkward way or i touch them. i recently got one on the outer side of my vaginal lips and a few days early one about 2 cm from my butt crack. when i placed toilet paper against them just to check them out, a little bit of liquid came out onto the paper, including a little blood. this leads me to believe they may just be pimples. ive heard its possible that you can have pimples down there and even more commonly on the butt cheeks, and i do have a lot of pimples on my face and shoulders as well as my back. usually every time a bump shows up down there, im also having a little bit of an outbreak of pimples on my face, so i thought maybe they could be connected, as well as the fact that the ones down there could be more painful just because the vaginal lips are more sensitive. anyways, a couple of days before the bump showed up on my vaginal lips this time, for a day or so i had this clear discharge that I do get every now and again, so im scared that might be connected to it being herpes. i do have other things such as tingling and burning and itching, but im 99% sure I also have BV, which i’m going to the doctor about in the next week or so, and I’ve had those symptoms quite a while longer than the bumps, so I think theres a possibility that all of those symptoms are a result of the BV and the only out of place thing is the bumps. I cant help but to admit to myself that what i have sounds exactly like herpes, but I just dont understand how. I have masturbated, and ive read that if you happen to touch a cold sore on your mouth and then your vagina very quickly after that its possible to transfer it, so im scared that maybe is how i got it. but i dont even recall having cold sores, i know ive had cankers, but im not sure about cold sores. also the fact that BV makes you more vulnerable to catch something like herpes, so maybe that increased the chances of me contracting it in that rare way. anyway, i just need some advice. i honestly dont know what ill do with myself if it is herpes, and I know people will just call me a liar about being a virgin if I tell them i suspect I have it. If youre still reading at this point, thank you SO much, and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

ps. this bumps have occured before, however theyve never bursted into painful sores like it says they might. I’ve also, at one point, had a spot closer to my vaginal opening that looks like the shiny red spot you get on your skin after a blister bursts, but I think i may just have cut myself with a fingernail.

admin answers:

Vaginal bumps, can mean lots of things, not necessarily just herpes. If you are a virgin then there is a very VERY slim chance that you have herpes. They might be Sebaceous cysts, on your vagina. These are bumps under the surface of the skin, and often the result of swollen hair follicles. Redness, tenderness and a pus-like substance draining from the boil are symptoms of sebaceous cysts. The occurrence of pimples could also be hormone related and could escalate around menstruation. Placing a hot, moist towel on the affected area will soothe the skin by reducing the inflammation and irritation. Sitting in a tub of hot water to which salt has been added eases the discomfort and reduces the infection. The water should be as hot as you can bear. This thoroughly cleanses the vagina and kills the germs responsible for the infection. It also rids the area of excess moisture and dead cells. Adding potassium permanganate to the water prevents urinary tract infections and sterilizes the vagina thoroughly. A paste of flax seeds and water, applied to the affected area, helps to draw out the pus and reduces the pain and inflammation. But really only a doctor can see the infected area, which is why i believe that you should go to one soon and ask him. That would be your best bet. Feel better. <3

Richard asks…

Women, knowing the risk of HIV/AIDS would you date a military guy?

I was wondering just how many military wives get tested for AIDS, you may be faithful, but your husband/boyfriend/kid’s father, sure isn’t. You should get tested every 6 months because that’s how long it takes for it to show up in a test, and it can take up to 5 years before you feel or see symptoms.

Men in the military perhaps have the lowest morals, travel all over and sleep with prostitutes, one-night stands, anonymous hook-ups and so forth. Iraq will return a nation of diseased men with herpes, ghonorrhea, shyphillis, HIV that will poison and infect out culture for all times. Maybe it’s better they stay over there and die off, to save us from much more deaths over here.

Or maybe they can come back and get career in rap videos talking about how many ho**s they had. But rappers are just singing a song and acting, at least many of them. But the HIV/AIDS risk is real!

admin answers:

How can you say things like that?

My entire family, including both of my parents are military. Thats a wild misconception. Just because people travel, they have low morals ? What about businessmen? Should we watch out for them too? Or scientific researchers?

I can’t believe how unbearably ignorant you are toward the people who work for you to be free.

Your Questions About Shingles

Richard asks…

Can shingles cause leg pain?

I’ve read online that it’s mostly chest and stomach affected, but I was wondering, can the pain and rash be on legs?

I feel really unwell, and have a burning sensation on the skin on my lower legs, my temp is up and it’s only the skin on my legs and the top of my back that hurts.

I’m very tired, and not really hungry, with waves of nausea. I also have a headache that comes and goes during the day. My daughter has chicken pox which is why shingles came to mind.

Anyone? How long would it take for the spots to appear after the onset of pain?
My skin is really sore šŸ™ and my face is hot on the same side as my leg hurts. The pain is only on the left side of my body.

admin answers:

Shingle starts as an itchy area followed by small blisters that are confined to a well- defined stripe on the body, and typically on one side of the body.

In about 72 hours, the skin gets more blisters the skin pain begins, In a very acute infection, the skin will be red and weepy, and will burn like fire.

Since Shingles lives in a single motor/sensory nerve root, the muscle that is controlled by that nerve will ache tremendously. The effects could take 6 weeks to return to normal.

Linda asks…

Does Post Herapetic Neuralgia from Shingles cause lower back pain ??

I had shingles 14 years ago while pregnant.

I am a 37 year old female.

For over seven years now when someone touches my lower back in any way i scream in pain. I have been to several doctors, 2 were back specialists, 3 choiropractors, 1 theropist, acupunture. Not one doctor understands why i am like this.

No medicine helps.

The only thing that shows up in my blood is Epstein Barr Syndrome. They all say its no big deal, almost everyone has it.

I do have epelepsy (grandmal and pitimal) and have been taking depekene for over 25 years. Taking depo provera for about 15 years. Had 2 epedorals from c-sections and while pregnant 15 years ago had shingles. Could any of these be a factor?

My xrays and MRI’s show mild arthritis in the lumbosacral articulation at the L5-S1 level. The pain level is much more than mild.

I was told that Shingles could still carry a virus that will never go away, is this true and what helps the pain ???

admin answers:

Anyone who ever had Chicken pox or a cold sore (or herpes) carries the virus and from that can come shingles. I luckily got over my shingles but I know a lady who is 88 and in pain everyday on her left side from shingles she had when she was younger. She won’t take medicine, but my doctor gave me Valtrex (what they use for genital herpes) and the pain stopped. I don’t know with epilepsy you can take it, but you could ask your doctor about it. I hope it goes away, it is horrible pain.

Lizzie asks…

Can contact with a person with shingles cause an outbreak of herpes?

A good friend of mine has always been very open with me and I knew she had herpes which she contracted about 10 years ago. Since meeting her new partner she hasn’t had a serious outbreak (for about 7 years) but recently had a very bad outbreak. We have been trying to figure out why and I put it down to stress as she has had a lot on her plate but the doctor told her that it is linked with chicken pox and shingles virus, she was in contact with someone who had shingles a week or so before the outbreak, could this have triggered it?

admin answers:

Let me explain how herpes and singles linked:
Herpes Virus is a family of viruses – including herpes I/II, varicella zoster virus (VZV), and others. VZV commonly causes chicken-pox in children and both shingles and postherpetic neuralgia in adults.

Saying that VZV could cause an outbreak is like saying Epstein Bar virus (also a virus in the herpes family) could cause an outbreak. It simply is not so.

Thomas asks…

what causes shingles?

I am 29 years old and have nerve sensitivity around my right side. It starts at the middle of my back and goes around to the center of mt stomach right below my breast bone. I think it may be shingles. I was wondering what causes shingles. about 3 weeks ago I fell and damaged the axillary nerve in my shoulder. Could this cause shingles?

Susan asks…

cure or cause for shingles?

how do you get shingles is it contagious by touch, or is it an after affect of the chicken pox. i got them on my feet and ankles when i deveoped a nasty skin ulcer from diabetes. are they related??

admin answers:

Chicken pox is caused by the Herpes Simplex virus. Once the chicken pox is gone the virus remains in your system and can reappear as Shingles. Anyone who has not had Chicken Pox or the vaccine for Chicken Pox can get Chicken Pox if they come in direct contact with the fluid in the blisters you have with Shingles. You can get Shingles more than once. When your immune system is low it’s easier to get Shingles, which is probably why you got them when you had the skin ulcer due to diabetes. There is a new vaccine that people who have had Chicken Pox can get so that if they do get Shingles it will be a mild case, but once you have Shingles the vaccine won’t help you.

Your Questions About Shingles

Jenny asks…

The doctor first said I have a scratched cornea and then said I have an infection behind my eye?

I am writing this for my husband. He is currently laying in a dark room, trying to get away from the pain. Five days ago the doc said he just had a scratched cornea after he was complaining that his eye hurt (said it felt like his contact was folded in half in his eye). Then the pain went into his head. A new doc two days later said he had an infection and that was causing extreme pain to the middle of his head. A doc today said he may have Shingles in his head. His eye is red and he says it feels like needles are poking his eye ball with extreme pain in his head and right behind the eye. He is crouched over from the pain in his head. He can see, but his eye is very teary and maybe even swollen. The doc gave him anit-inflamitory meds and meds to kill a virus. Nothing is helping. It has gotten prgressively worse and worse over the course of four days. He had a lot of stress in his life two weeks ago. Don’t know what else to do. He cannot sleep and lies awake all night.

admin answers:

I’ve had my cornea scratched twice. It feels like someone is taking sandpaper across your eyeball. It gave me agonizing headaches. I went to the emergency room and there they numbed my eye and used a black light and found the scratch. I know what he’s goin’ through and it sucks. Don’t wait any longer…….Get up and go now. As for the shingles….I agree with the first response. Never heard of shingles in the head. Ask his doctor if he has ever heard of “foot in the @$$” Good Luck.

Thomas asks…

solution for facial nerve damage pain?

I have a condition called postherpetic neuralgia, and I am desperate for a solution to my forehead nerve damage pain. I need help finding a nerve specialist doctor. I live in Tuolumne County. I am willing to travel if I can a doctor who can help me. I got the shingles virus in 2001, and have been fighting the stabbing, stinging pain for way too long! It’s totally changed my life, and I’m getting worn out, and depressed from the constant pain on the right side of my forehead, and top of head. I take pain med. to alleviate the pain, but nothing stops it completely. I really need help with medical research. I have seen several doctors for PHN, but without success. I need a solution, not more medicine. I need support, and help. Can anyone help me?

admin answers:

Lots of things will create nerved damage and most doctors can only prescribe something to deaden the pain. Your body needs specific nutrients to be able to repair the damage that was done by the shingles.

You can read about it here http://www.mcvitamins.com/Causes%20of%20Neuropathy/shingles.htm

Sandra asks…

Does anyone have PERSONAL EXPERIENCE with SHINGLES?

84 Year old Grandma is in excruciating pain. Feels like her face and head are on fire. Pain meds aren’t helping yet. (Vicodin and Neurontin). She has Heart Disease too and I’m afraid with the pain, she could have a Heart Attack. Have any of you had Shingles? Is there anything that especially worked well for the pain? Thank you for any help you can give us. This is just terrible. Her Dr. never told her to have the Vaccination against it. This could have been prevented. If anyone out there is 60 years old or older, I’d urge you to get the Vaccination.

admin answers:

Oh the poor woman, having shingles twice I know the pain and distress she must be in.

If the attack had been picked up earlier she could have been given a anti-viral, which may have shortened the attack and pain, especially if started in 72 hours of attack starting.

If the blisters have not dried up, I would use compresses with a solution of vinegar and water. Calamine lotion may also help.

A combination of these 3 Essential oils eucalyptus, tea tree and bergamot or Chamomile, Lavender and Tea Tree are really good for shingles, 2 drops of each mixed with a little olive oil or Vodka and dabbed on every few hours may also help with the pain. As it is on her face I would possibly go for the Chamomile, lavender and Tea Tree mix as it is not so over powering or sting as much, and the Chamomile and lavender are soothing and moisturizing, and the Tea Tree is a natural antiseptic, as well as a antifungal.

If the pain is really bad maybe she needs to see her doctor who will prescribe some other medication and or ointment to help relieve the pain.

Look in to seeing if it is not to late to have the vaccine, to prevent future outbreaks. I am fairly certain it won’t be.

Good luck and hope the pain settles soon for your Grandma.

Nancy asks…

need infomation on shingles in side of the body?

my wife got shingles they say they on the inside if the body she having servere pain in the top of her head

admin answers:

Many people are under the impression that shingles is only a topical distress. One can have shingles on the brain as an example. If your wife was told they are inside, perhaps they were refering to the virus that runs thru the nerves. When I get them, I get shooting pains in my head that attack like a spasm. I haven’t found anything yet to ease the pain….you are not suffering alone. Good luck.

William asks…

Back to Lyrica questions again!?

I’m off of the Lyrica for facial shingles. I’ve been tapering off from 300 mg. to 150 mg.for a week now and have been totally off of it for 3 days! Today I went to Weight Watchers and had lost 15.2 pounds! They couldn’t believe it. Well, I’ve had a ‘bug’ for 3 days and only eaten toast and some water but the big thing is the swelling I had begun to experience in my feet and legs is completely gone! Could this be due not only to my not eating but to discontinuing the Lyrica? I had read that it had ‘edema’ as a side effect but I knew the swelling I had last week was not normal. Also, I do have this ‘shooting’ pain in my head off and on ( same side the shingles has been on) and boy did it ‘really hurt’ the night I was ‘throwing up’ (sorry). Guess that’s from the sudden ‘purging’ of one’s body causeing head pressure. Anyway, has anyone had this experience of weight loss and/or water retention with Lyrica? thanks
yanksgirl

admin answers:

Yes, i was on Lyrica for about a week and my feet and ankles blew up……..my ankles looked like elephant feet…i’m not lying so i got off of it (i was taking 75mg) and the swelling went down within a week……….i was on it for nerve damage…not shingles or diabetics or seizures……….it was horrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your Questions About Shingles

Betty asks…

What is the difference between the Chicken Pox vaccine and the Shingles vaccine?

I know they are both effective live attenuated vaccines, and the shingles vaccine is only recommended for people 60 and over. Are the vaccines interchangeable? How often should children/adults get chicken pox boosters? Will most insurance cover these vaccines?
Is the same attenuated virus in both vaccines?

admin answers:

They are not interchangable. The shingles vaccine contains more of the virus antigen than the chickenpox vaccine. Chickenpox vaccine is given in 2 doses, shingles in 1 dose. Currently no boosters are recommended.

Edit: Yes, the type of attenuated virus is exactly the same. The manufacturer of both vaccines (Merck) uses the same virus stock to produce the two vaccines (actually three vaccines, varicella, or chickenpox, MMRV- a combination measles, mumps, rubella, and chickenpox vaccine, and zoster, or shingles vaccine). It is the amounts that are different.

Sometimes insurance covers the vaccines and sometimes it does not but Merck has a patient assistance program for people who cannot afford the vaccines.

Here are some links to more information on the two vaccines.

You can also look up the product information or the Vaccine Information Statement (VIS) for each vaccine for more specific information.

Nancy asks…

Can you get chickenpox from someone who just received the shingles vaccine?

My husband and I are visiting my mother in-law next week. We just found out that she received the shingles vaccine this past weekend. We are supposed to stay with her at her house for the next two weeks and neither my husband or I have had chickenpox. Can we get the chickenpox if we stay with her or be around her? Should I be looking at staying at a hotel now?

admin answers:

According to the shingles vaccine package insert, “Transmission of vaccine virus may occur rarely between vaccinees and susceptible contacts.” http://www.fda.gov/downloads/BiologicsBloodVaccines/Vaccines/ApprovedProducts/UCM132831.pdf

There’s a good chance you’re already immune to chickenpox, though. I thought I had never had it, but I got a blood test that showed full immunity.

Thomas asks…

Any problems with getting the shingles vaccine when you have fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome?

Has anyone with CFS/FM had the shingles vaccine and did you experience any bad side-effects?

admin answers:

I would avoid a vaccine. There is mercury, formaldehyde, lead, aluminum, phenols, etc. They are not that safe. I have heard that people with fibromyalgia benefit greatly from a wheat free diet. Maybe give that a try and avoid the poisons…

George asks…

Why is the shingles vaccine recommended for those over age 60?

I have shingles now and want to get the vaccine asap but I am only in my 40’s.

admin answers:

The main reason is that the human immune system starts weakening after 60. Talk to your doctor about getting the shot, since you had shingles at an early age.

Donald asks…

What is the cost of a shingles vaccine?

I know people who have paid from $3 to $300. for a shingles vaccine. What is the cost of the medication to a clinic?

admin answers:

The clinic pays $180 for it. The cost to the patient is $300 unless insurance covers it or it is subsidised in some way.

Your Questions About Shingles

Helen asks…

How long should I wait before checking for Herpes symptoms?

I had unprotected oral sex last night…I don’t really know the girl and I don’t want to go up to her and ask.
I really hope I didn’t get herpes as I have no idea if she had or not but how long does it take for it to show any kind of symptoms of oral herpes? And what symptoms should I be looking out for?

admin answers:

Genital herpes is generally contracted from skin to skin contact with an infected area. For example, if someone has a genital herpes infection they can pass on the virus to another person by touching or making contact with the area, such as through vaginal, anal or oral sex, or by rubbing against the infection. Once infected with genital herpes, the virus remains inside the body in a latent (sleeping) state. Throughout a person’s life the virus can then become “activated” causing a genital herpes recurrence.

During a primary genital herpes episode (the first outbreak) it is common to feel flu like symptoms, such as swollen glands, headache or fever. Aching or ‘tingling’ sensations in the groin, thigh and buttocks muscles may also occur. Itching, pain and tingling sensations called the prodrome (or warning symptoms) typically occur 1 to 2 days before any sores appear. A genital herpes infection will generally appear as a small, fluid-filled blister which goes through a cycle of phases. The blister will usually weep (ulcerate) and form a scab or ‘crusting’ before healing and disappearing completely.

Jenny asks…

how long does it take for herpes/warts to show up after u have the symptoms?

i have a simple question.

how long does it usually take for warts and herpes to show up on guys once they start having some of the symtopms such as itching?

in other words, how long after the symtoms does it usually take for the person to see/notice them with naked eye?

i lost my virginity to this girl like 4 months ago and i have been having unprocted sex with her for the past 2-3 months. 15 days ago, i noticed that my skin right before the head of my penis was changed. it was really soft too. i went to a doctor and he said he doesn’t see anything wrong with it and that it was only like that cause i have had too much sex. the thing is ever since i noticed i was having itching problems all the time but it kept getting better as well as my skin. nothing has changed and if anything its getting better so thats why i wanted to ask.

admin answers:

When do signs & symptoms appear?
• A person may show symptoms within days after contracting genital herpes, or it may take weeks, months, or years.
• Some people may have a severe outbreak within days after contracting the virus.
• Some people may have a first outbreak so mild that they do not notice it.
• Because of these possibilities, it can be difficult for people to know when and from whom they may have contracted the virus.

James asks…

When will the first symptoms of the HS1 virus surface?

When some one is infected for the first time with Herpes Simplex 1, or Oral Herpes, about how long before the symptoms show up initially? A week? Couple days? A month? A year?

admin answers:

Usually between 1-3 weeks after being infected. But your body can naturally suppress herpes for long periods of time even after being infected, so it can take longer then 3 weeks to have an out break.

Sandra asks…

How long before I can get tested for Herpes?

How long after a sexual encounter will herpes show up on a blood test? I know the q-tip test is only effective if you have symptoms, which I dont. What I’d like to know is how long does it take for the herpes antibodies to show up on a herpes blood test? Thanks.

Susan asks…

Onset of herpes symptoms after exposure?

How long after you are infected will sores show up?

Alright here is the chain of events:

7:30ish: I get hit in the face by a kids hand while playing a game of basketball. It was apparent to me that my lip was cut, but there was no blood. I continued playing basketball until around 8:00.

8:00: Go up to the weight room, lift weights on the machines and the free weights. Came into contact with some sanitation rags which are used to clean off the machines. May have made contact with lip after touching one of these rags, may have not.

9:00 PM: Go home with a sort of fat lip, don’t think much of it. Assumed it would stop swelling by the morning.

7:15 AM: Wake up, take a look at my mouth, see a brownish mark on the exact same place where the kid hit me the night before. Mouth still swollen. The brownish mark reminds me of herpes pictures I have seen in the past.

The question: Could I have contracted herpes from gym equipment the night before? Does the fact that it only took less than 12 hours for something to show up on my lip mean that it is probably not a herpes infection?

It should be noted that I went to a doctor and he thought it was a bacterial infection of some sort. Did not prescribe me Valtrex. Prescribed me an anti-bacterial agent. Obviously he does not believe it is herpes. Still, have you heard of herpes spreading and showing signs so quickly, or do you think its just from the cut I have? Please help, I am anxious. Very anxious.

admin answers:

Herpes has an incubation period of about 8 days, so it is very possible that you have contacted it. Although some things such a strong immune system can cause it to be a prolonged incubation period.

Your Questions About Shingles

Lisa asks…

i think my son may have chicken pox???? please help me, im tired of waiting for his doc to call!?

Ok, so i might be freaking out a bit but this is my first kid and he’s never had to go to the doctor for being sick or take any meds like antibiotics or anything (we’ve been really blessed so far) so its the first time ive ever had to go through this. Ok, so last thursday we had family come in for the holiday and we were with them friday, saturday, and sunday. Monday night my 13month old started with a fever and cold like symptoms and they have continued still today. But, i just found out that yesterday one of our family members who came to visit has shingles. Is it possible for my son to get it? He has been super cranky, runny nose, fever….etc. I already took him to the doctor on tues and they said that he just has a little virus and some congestion and his symptoms should go away in 3-5 days.(this was before i knew about the shingles) Last night his temp was normal but his body was very warm, especially his stomach, his head felt a little warm but not hot. (weird i know but its been that way all week even when his temp was 102 his stomach felt hot). ive read many different things on the internet so if anyone has had experience with chicken pox any information is greatly appreciated!!! Thanks

admin answers:

It is possible that your son could get chicken pox from coming into DIRECT contact with the vesicle fluid of a shingles lesion. Usually though, these lesions are covered so the risk is slim that he actually came into contact unless the person with shingles touched the blister fluid then immediately had contact with him.

HOWEVER!! The incubation period for chicken pox is 2 to 3 weeks (commonly 14 to 16 days) so the time frame is not right for you to be worrying over Chicken pox (which is mostly an annoying illness for the most part anyway – complications are VERY rare in young children)

He’s probably got something else after having all those other family members in his face for the weekend. Or if by chance he does crop up with Chicken pox vesicles in the next day or two….he didn’t get it from your visiting family members ( it’s too soon)

Note: Even though someone who has never had Chicken Pox can get Chicken Pox IF (and that’s a big if) they come into contact with the fluid from a Shingles’ lesion…..You CANNOT get Shingles from coming into contact with Chicken Pox and you can’t get Shingles from coming into contact with Shingles either. It’s a one-way street.

Linda asks…

are herpes simplex blisters really painful?

are herpes simplex blisters really painful? and do they form in clusters?

I think I have herpes simplex….I think I have all the symptoms and I am really scared…this could also be all in my head

I started with one blister on my chest, and then on my back and then it started forming a couple on my arms, stomach, legs, feet, scalp and vaginal area. They are not clusters, they are single blisters and I try not to pop them…I also have what looks like a canker sore on my gums…its around one tooth and it started out white and tender and then the next day it was purple back and had white gooey layer on top of it like it was peeling the skin off…It was not painful like blister or ne thing, it was just tender…I think I also had some think mucous but I am not sure, again i think this is all in my head….I went to the dentist today to get my gums checked out and he thinks its a gum problem that needs steroids,,. I also saw a doctor yesterday and she prescribed to me Valtrex cause she thinks it could be chicken pox for the second time (shingles)
I do not have any rash, I don’t have alot of blister on my body just a couple spots on each part of my body…they are not painful and they are not clustered together
I’m thinking that the gum problem could be just be there at the wrong time and might get diagnosed with the blisters…because i have had problems around that gum before when i brush it would bleed.
I dont have any other sores in my mouth
please tell me if you have any idea what it could be…it would make me feel alot better, thank you

bile duct cancer and itching?

My mother has had terrible itching and painful skin, mainly on her head and the trunk of her body for about 7 weeks, with no rash. She can’t sleep and feel’s feverish as well. Last year the doctor suspected she may have bile duct cancer, because her liver and pancreatic enzymes we’re so elevated. She was also jaundice then, but not now. They hadn’t found a tumor when she was scoped then either. Anyway, I thought the itching/skin pain may be related to having shingles, but the doctor believes it’s cancer related and doing futher testing.
I’ve never heard of cancer causing these types of symptoms, could this really be the cause?

Unfortunately the Dr is probably correct. Ask the Dr about prescribing the medicine doxepin for her itching. This will also help her rest.

It’s probably best to see a neurologist & make sure you mention all of these symptoms to him/her.

Sandra asks…

Could this be major anxiety?

So I guess you can say since I was a little kid, I’ve always been a bit of a hypochondriac. Always thought something was wrong with me. It wasn’t till about 2 yrs ago when I turned 18 that I started having what I believe to be anxiety attacks. Sudden feeling of dizziness, nausea, heart pounding, even thoughts that I may be dieing. A few months ago I got so stressed that I even got shingles from having such a high level of stress. I am now 20, I do better now than before, by telling myself its all in your head, you’ll be fine. Lately I’ve been having sudden spells of nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, and fatigue. Is symptoms like that associated with anxiety. I always worry its something terribly wrong. Also how do you get rid of anxiety naturally, without all the anti depressants and what not that i refuse to take ever in my life!?
valium sounds good with some bikram yoga too ha

Samantha,

I can relate to anxiety.

I had anxiety attacks when I had to speak in public. Or when there would be more than a few people around me in the same room. It was something that started when I was a teenager and that lasted over years and subsequently affected my career until not so long ago.

At some point, I was prescribed medicine but I wanted to avoid that too(because of side effects). That’s when I discovered a program that literally pulled me out of that “hole”. It is a 100% natural method. The main key here is that you should no longer fear the thought of anxiety. You have to get out of/break that loop. Not only did that cure me – you become your true self again – but I was also extremely surprised to even discover newly built self-confidence.

Good luck!

Forever 21………..?

There is a store called Forever 21 aimed at women. Why do you think they chose the name “Forever 21“? how come it’s not “forever 23″? Are they trying to imply that 21 is the best year of your life and it should last forever if it could?
